    2 out of 5 stars MTV Unplugged 2 - Disappointing.......2005-08-02

MTV Unplugged 1 was a great album, that blended very well. Unplugged two just misses as a combination of songs.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the First.......2003-08-14

I have both MTV Unplugged compilations and I am always listenings to this version. This Version has Elton John, Sheryl Crow, Midnight Oil and a host of other great groups and songs. It is well worth it to get this album. The Sheryl Crow song is espially good, she does a piano solo through most of the song that is very good that seems to go back to her early childhood days. But don't get me wrong it's tough to find a bad song on this album.

    1 out of 5 stars Unnecessary........2007-05-08

This is an entirely unnecessary release. A compilation album, however well-done, is not the proper venue for Regina's work, even as an introduction. Her albums each have a great degree of individual character, and in this compilation lose so much in context. I know a lot of people are anxious to jump on the Spektor bandwagon right now, but it's worth tracking down the individual albums. Begin to Hope and Soviet Kitsch are of course widely available, and can be found right on this site. The other two do take some work to track down, but can both be found at various independent music stores, and 11:11 can also be easily purchased digitally. I understand why a retrospektive like this might be attractive to a new fan, but it really isn't the best way to meet Regina's earlier work, espescially at this price.

    5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE.......2007-02-18

This is a collection of songs from Regina Spektor's first 3 USA releases.
Regina's first 2 releases were not available in the U.K. Regina is an
intelligent singer/songwriter/performer. She can make a single note sound
as if you have never heard it before..This CD is a beautiful example of
Regina's immense talent. The quality of sound is also "tops"
p.s. Regina sounds like a classically trained musician(HERSELF)

    5 out of 5 stars quite a jem.......2007-01-04

Regina Spektor has shocked my musical tastes into shape yet again! Ever since I listened to "Us" from Soviet Kitch, I have loved Regina's lyrics and innovative vocals. This CD combines songs from Regina's previous CDs including the hard to find "Songs" and "11:11". Part of the reason I love Mary Ann Meets the Gravediggers is that each song on the CD is so distinct ( you have stories about condemned men being warned not to drown in the bath and sneaky murderesses and a woman with cancer who decides to buy a limo before buying chemotherapy). The selling point of this CD for me was the song, "the Consequence of Sounds" that uses a simple beat as a backdrop for Regina to explore how careless words/media have caused a world of fear and violence. Plus the artwork from this album is reminiscent of Edward Gorey's genious.

    4 out of 5 stars UNIQUE!!.......2006-11-06

Ms Spektor is a wonderful artist who knows how to use her voice like a fine instrument. She employs so many facets of singing that I would not know how to "classify" her music. Possibly cabaret? Some light rock? But oh-so-interesting lyrics. This music might be a little harsh for the over-40 crowd. But as a 57-year old grandma, I feel my son has broadened my horizons my introducing me to such wonderful and unique music as Ms Spektor's. I will definitely buy more of her music.

5 out of 5 stars not eclectic, but still profound.......2006-08-27

eclectic - Selecting or employing individual elements from a variety of sources, systems, or styles. this does not mean "really different sounding" or "quirky" which is actually true of r.s.. regina is extremely talented, and it's not her fault if her listeners don't know basic vocabulary. her voice is the same on every song. her piano is the same on every song, but...she is different from EVERYONE else, so it ellicits records that are listen-worthy, eccentric, and enjoyable. perhaps they mean eccentric...

5 out of 5 stars Great Spanish- Children Music.......2007-06-02

I grew up listening to Cri Cri and I was ecstatic to see this collection available online. I highly recommend this collection! I love playing the CDs right before I put my one-year-old to sleep... it helps calm him down, and he falls asleep shortly after. It is also a great collection to play when you have children in your car. It is a collection I hope to pass on from generation to generation and hope many more see the value and appreciate this timeless music.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT FOR YOUNG CHILDREN.......2007-01-16

    IF YOU'RE A CRI-CRI FAN...THIS IS THE BEST!!!

    MY BABY LOVE'S IT!!

    5 out of 5 stars classic children's songs.......2006-03-02

This two volume collection is excellent. It includes a huge number of Cri Cri's classic children's songs. The songs are about animals, trains, children, all great compositions by Francisco Jose Gabilondo Soler of Veracruz, Mexico. Each song has a different musical style (tango, fox-trot, danzon, etc.); you will never get tired of hearing these albums. Singable, danceable, very up-beat and tender, these songs have been children's, and parent's, favorites since Soler began composing these pieces for the radio in the 30's.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful return to my childhood.......2005-07-25

Listening to the songs Cri-Cri wrote and sang brought me back to my happy childhood. I bought the CD to sing these sweet childhood songs to my little grandson. He loves them!

    5 out of 5 stars A delighted grandmother.......2004-02-07

Truly the best of Cri-Cri songs and a CD that every grandparent should have for their grandchildren. The music is beautiful and the original sounds take me back to my own childhood when Cri-Cri captured our imagination via the radio. Exceptional storytelling! Listening to Cri-Cri is an experience that every child will remember. My grand-daughter is only 18 months old and watching her eyes grow with excitement as she listens to Cri-Cri gives me hope that we can still save the innocence of childhood! I hope everyone enjoys it as much as my grand-daughter and I have.

5 out of 5 stars NICE VALUE, TERRIFIC RONSTADT.......2007-06-19

Both of Linda's massive selling GREATEST HITS Lps have been released on one CD. This nice UK import is also nicely priced and contains some of Ronstadts best known songs. Like Connie Francis before her, Linda delved into reviving oldies and finding a formula that worked for her that would eventually lead her to branching out into other unexplored musical areas that make her a premier vocalist of her era and all time. Some of the more interesting cuts are the lesser known ones LOVE HAS NO PRIDE has the angst without resorting to cliche or soap opera. Her version of DESPERADO far exceeds the Eagles original cover. Then there are the great hits, YOU'RE NO GOOD, BLUE BAYOU and so many others.

A great 2 for 1 by the only female rocker of her era to "hold it together" as none equalled or surpassed her in her heyday.

Great nostalgia and a nice primer to search for her more adventurous works that she dabbled with on her Lps that listeners will be enticed to explore.

    Terrific!

4 out of 5 stars Not quite "Born to Do It", but close!!.......2006-10-22

I just want to say, WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU, CRAIG? COME BACK TO THE UNITED STATES AND SHOW US WHAT REAL MUSIC IS INSTEAD OF THESE TRASHY "LOVE" SONGS! This album was so much better than "Slicker Than Your Average". I like most of the songs, especially "Just Chillin'" and "My Love Don't Stop". If you have Craig's first CD, just forgive him for the second one and get this one, definately. He displays an excellent range, and he writes his own songs. And he's drop-dead handsome?!?! Definately recommended for somebody who wants to hear some real music. I just hope he makes a comeback in the U.S.

3 out of 5 stars The musical journey continues.......2006-09-11

Six years since his groundbreaking debut, one of Britain's hottest Urban exports Craig David returns with his latest offering - an autobiographical and personal album titled "The Story Goes". A spectacular debut can be a boon or a bane. While it definitely helps engrave a musician's position and significance in the world of music, it also lays the foundation for lofty and unrealistic expectations for future musical endeavors. It is the phenomenon that created the term "sophomore slump" - something Craig experienced with his last album "Slicker than your average". Yet, it has not deterred him and he is still possessed by the will to go on. His fans will be more than glad about this - especially given the results of his most recent effort, which while not stellar, are most certainly substantial.

On "The story goes", it appears that Craig has made a deliberate effort to focus almost exclusively on ballads. Some listeners might get the feeling that Craig has taken a "middle of the road safe" approach to most of these ballads making them sound like mainstream adult contemporary tracks. While most of them are not instant grabbers, their classic R&B vibes melted with Craig David's smooth voice most certainly have the potential to grow on listeners in a rather short span of time. The only exception to this is "Hypnotic" - Craig's strongest ballad to date - a magical ingredient to spice up a romantic evening. It is reason enough for listeners to give this album the chance it rightfully deserves.

For those that equate Craig David with high-energy 2-step tracks, this album might not be all that they would have hoped for. The only track reminiscent of the 2-step style that Craig adopted on his successful debut "Born to Do It" is "All the Way" - a fun, light-hearted and exhilarating up-tempo track aimed at filling a dance floor. On the other hand, for those that associate Craig David with a powerful voice that keeps him miles ahead of the rest of his R&B contemporaries, this just might be the album they have been secretly waiting for.

Delivering clear-cut verdicts on an album such as this might not be as easy as one would hope for since it does not match the standards of the highly successful "Born to Do it" but most certainly provides glimpses for a long musical future for the exceptionally talented Craig David. It deserves a fair chance.

Songs for the casual listener: Hypnotic
Songs for the Craig David fan: All the way, Hypnotic, My Love don't stop

5 out of 5 stars unexpected but pleasant.......2006-09-05

I read alot of reviews saying this album had too many ballads and wasn't as good as the first album. I wouldn't call myself a Craig David fan, but I've always liked alot of his songs. So I decided to get it anyways to see for myself. It's true that the album is mostly composed of love songs and doesn't have too many of his upbeat songs, but I still liked it. I don't enjoy love songs too much but somehow he made them upbeat and different. I have alot of favorite songs in this album, as I always do with craig david. Separate Ways, Unbelievable, and the first song which is the most upbeat are a couple favorites.

This album is more wistful and contemplative which is nice because you can play it in the background without getting overwhelmed. I have to say this was unexpectedly really good. I've been playing the whole album over and over for weeks now, and I could still go listen to it.

    5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2006-06-17

What can I say, its a classic craig david album. Am a big fan of his music. If you like good music, this is the album to get. My favorite songs are Hypnotic, Seperate Ways and Johnny.

3 out of 5 stars Dissapointing, To Say The Very Least.......2006-05-29

If music history tells us anything, it's that the 3rd album is always the album that shows us what path an artist is going to take for the rest of their career. It seems to always be; the first album is great, the 2nd is weak, and the third is kind of a "back to the basics" type album. Craig Ashley David, has completely reworked this system.

Let's start with the basic negatives of this album. First and foremost, there are far too many slow ballads on this album. Not that Craig can't do slow ballads, but having only one up-tempo/2 step track is a complete letdown. Especially with Craig's track record of being a primary 2-step artist. Slow ballads are all over the album, and it doesn't help that 90% of them range from really, really boring, and generic to above average. Even Craig's quicker ballads are kind of boring as well. "I'm Sorry (I Don't Love You No More)" is terribly generic, along with songs other Craig fans are raving about, like "All The Way" and "Hypnotic." The only truly incredible tracks on this album include Johnny, Let Her Go, and I Never Should Have Walked Away....everything else ranges from skippable, to weak.

Craig's voice, like always, is beautiful. In fact, one thing he's always had is a beautiful, though not strong voice; and one thing I've loved about him, is despite not having a strong voice, he relies on his song writing to keep him in the ranks of other R&B artists. Sadly, great song writing, seen in "Booty Man" or "Fast Cars" isn't here either.

This album is still worth purchasing for huge Craig fans, like myself. Simply to hear is progression [or in this case digression] and his voice on new material is worth every penny. People looking to get into Craig for the first time, should look towards "Slicker Than Your Average" assuming you don't mind the terrible rap verses, or "Born To Do It" assuming you don't the immaturity seen throughout the album.

I began listening to Bollywood music after becoming addicted to Bollywood movies. I am now addicted to the music. I don't know if it's good or bad and have no sophisticated judgments to offer, but I can't stop listening to this CD.

    5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2006-08-05

I've been collecting A.R. Rahman's music for films for over a year now, and this CD fills in all the gaps - stuff that is either older and no longer available or that Amazon (in its infinite wisdom) does not carry. An absolute MUST for any fan of A.R.R.!

5 out of 5 stars An Introduction to AR Rahman.......2006-06-05

Introduction to AR Rahman is a compilation of work from India's unexcelled film composer. AR Rahman started composing for films in 1992. Prior to that he was just a small time composer creating music for commercials. At a music awards ceremony, he was recognized by legendary director Mani Ratnam. Mani Ratnam had offered Rahman an opportunity to create the soundtrack for his upcoming film Roja. When the music for Roja arrived it changed the way people viewed soundtracks. Prior to the arrival of Rahman, film music was thought of as merely an interval in the movie but with the arrival of Rahman's soundtracks, film music became immensely important. Roja, both the film and soundtrack have become a part of Indian culture ever since they were released. Time magazine recently recognized the music for Roja by rating it one of the top ten soundtracks ever to be released. Ever since their collaboration on Roja, AR Rahman has composed the music for every Mani Ratnam film. Their next collaboration was released in 1995, it was titled Bombay. The soundtrack for Bombay is another which to this day is heard throughout the world. The theme music from Bombay was used in Lord of War, an extremely successful film starring Nicholas Cage. Their next collaboration was the classic Dil Se. Both the soundtrack and film are hailed as classics in India. The immensely popular song from Dil Se, Chaiyya Chaiyya was recently featured in the hit film Inside Man, once again giving Rahman international recognition. In 2000, AR Rahman had his most successful release, titled Kandukondain Kandukondain, directed by Rajiv Mennon. The soundtrack to this album is the most successful in India. Rahman's next collaboration with Mani Ratnam was Alai Payuthey. This soundtrack was amazingly successful and the movie was so well recognized that Shaad Ali a Hindi movie director received the permission of Mani Ratnam to remake it in Hindi. He was also immensely pleased with the soundtrack and used the same soundtrack with a few additions from Rahman. 2001 proved to be another very successful year for AR Rahman. He released Parthale Paravasam directed by one of the greatest director's of Indian cinema, K.Balachander. This was once again a tremendous hit for Rahman. The Oscar nominated Lagaan was also released in 2001 and he created a very versatile soundtrack for this film combining classical Indian music with Western music. In 2002, Mani Ratnam and AR Rahman collaborated for the fifth time and released the unforgettable Kannatil Muthamittal. The soundtrack for this movie wasn't quite as commercially successful as his other collaborations with Mani Ratnam, yet received some wonderful reviews from the critics. Also, Bombay Dreams was released in 2002. Andrew Lloyd Webber asked Rahman to create the soundtrack for this production initially released in London, later making it's way to Broadway. This soundtrack was, once again well received internationally. 2003 was a somewhat disappointing year for Rahman in India, but that was because Rahman was working on a very important international project. He was asked by the respected director He Ping to create the music for Warriors of Heaven and Earth, which was very well appreciated in China. In 2004, Rahman was back in all his glory. He released the soundtrack for Meenaxi. This is one of his greatest works ever, once again offering a wide array of music, giving everybody a song or two to enjoy and appreciate. Ayitha Ezhuthu was also released in 2004. This was his sixth collaboration with Mani Ratnam. This soundtrack was also successful. Personally speaking it isn't one of my favorites because it is influenced heavily by Western music. Nevertheless, I appreciate this soundtrack because Rahman experimented with very unique instruments creating a very different sound throughout the album. The critically acclaimed Swades was also released in 2004.The score for this film which is played on the flute is absolutely astonishing. It is very peaceful and relaxing. One of Rahman's most productive years was 2005. In 2005, he released the soundtrack for Anbe Aaruyire, which was his return to scoring tamil films after almost an entire year. The soundtrack for Bose was also released. Jana Gana Mana, India's national anthem is featured in this album and it is said to be the most beautifully orchestrated version of this anthem. Water was another critically acclaimed release of 2005. Water is the only album for which Rahman gives himself a 10/10. 2006 seems to be another very ambitious year for AR Rahman. Rang De Basanti was released early this year. The soundtrack for this album is so far the most successful of the year. The soundtrack for Godfather has also been released. This soundtrack has been very well received throughout Kollywood. Guru, his seventh collaboration with Mani Ratnam will also be released towards the end of this year.
AR Rahman has created a very unique style to Indian film music. He has received the highest number of National Film Awards. He received four of these awards, surpassing the record set by the maestro, for his work on Roja(1992), Minsara Kanvu(1997), Lagaan(2002), and Kannathil Muthamittal(2003). He is respected as one of the musical greats by artists such as Kavitha Krishnamoorthy, Asha Bhosle, and Lata Mangeshkar.

Here is a review of the CD:
This is just an introduction to AR Rahman, by no means does it contain all of his successful work.

    Track Listing
    Disc One
1)Bombay Theme Music- a beautiful and relaxing piece of music recently featured in the successful movie Lord of War.
    2) Chinna Chinna Asai(Roja)- a beautiful song that is still very popular although it is 14 years old.
3)Kannalane- this song doesn't have the greatest start but gets better if you listen to it a few times.
4)Mettupodu- an amazing track which uses fusion. This becomes evident at the end of the song when the saxophone is accompanied by Indian classical music.
5)Ennavale- this is another song that takes time to grow on you but like many of Rahman's songs, once they grow on you they stay with you.
6)Anbe Anbe- this song is another beautiful example of Rahman using fusion to score another massive hit
7)Rasika- this song is upbeat and is great for dancing. There is a flute interlude in the middle of this song which should not be missed.
8)Yaro Yarodi- this song is beautifully crafted. It has vocals provided by several different artists and is one of Rahman's most creative pieces of work.
9)Maargazhi- this song is from the album Sangamam. It was a classical effort by Rahman, and it certainly was a terrific one. This song has vocals from both Unnikrishnan and S. Janaki. Need I say more?
10)Swasame- a very simple and sweet song but the chorus becomes addicitive after a certain point. The singers are SPB and Sadhana Sargam.
11)Thirakkatha- a soft and soothing song. It's long running for over 7 minutes but it is worth listening to.
12)Minsara Kanna- This is one of Rahman's most brilliant classical songs. There is just a certain beauty to this song which is inexplicable through words.
    Disc Two
1)Alai Payuthey- a remix of a classical song. It keeps many elements of the original song but drastically changes the instruments which are used..
2)Varaaga Nathi- sung by Shankar Mahadevan who provides amazing vocals as always.
3)Idhu Manmadha Maadham- has an amazing beat, a semi classical tune, and beautiful vocals. This is a song you should not miss.
4)Sowkkiyamma- another beautiful classical song, sung by Nithyashree, comes close to Minsara Kanna.
5)Thom Karuvil Irunthom- a very high energetic song, sung by Shankar Mahdevan.
6)Kannodu- this was Rahman's first attempt at a classical song. It is from the movie Jeans.
7)Uyire- a very melodious song from Bombay. Hariharan's voice does splendidly for this song.
8)Kulichaa Kuthalam- this song is one of the weaker songs from Rahman. It from the popular movie Duet. This compilation should have had Anjali Anjali, instead of this song. Nevertheless, give it a listen.
9)Anbendra- a very slow and beautiful tune.
10)Kannamuchi- this is a shortened version of the song. If you want the full version you can purchase it on itunes. A very nice and relaxing song.
11)Usilampatii Penkutti- this song was very successful, but it was too upbeat for me to enjoy.
12)Poraalae- The tune for this song is pretty good, but the vocals by Swarnalatha are horrific.I'd rather listen to myself sing.
13)Nithiyae Nithiyae- Now, this is one of my favorite songs. It is slow, semi classical, and the vocals are by Unnimennon. In other words this is one of the best songs ever.

This greatest hits compilation has some very memorable songs on it but if you want to really explore the work of this talented artist listen to these albums: Rang De Basanti, Kannathil Muthamittal, Kandukondain, Kandukondain, Dil Se, Godfather, Mangal Pandey, Star, and Sangamam.

5 out of 5 stars A good Mexican music album.......2007-01-26

An album with passionante songs, color, life, energy and authentic Mexican spirit.
I like Vicente Fernandez voice, especially when he stresses some words in full voice and the voice sounds a bit rough.
    Good music , good sound.

    5 out of 5 stars A must have ............2004-12-23

This compilation with Historia de un Idolo 1 is a must have for every Vicente Fernandez fan, fans of rancheras, and those who love Mexican music. This CD contains some of his most popular songs like Volver, Volver and De Que Manera te Olvido. The 2 compilations Historia 1 & 2 also has sn interview with Vicente Fernandez in the cover and some wonderful pictures including him recieving his star on the Walk of Fame. I was fortunate to see him live in Madison Sq. Garden last October and I was amazed at his voice, still beautiful and powerful as ever. He sang for two and haft hours without intermission. He is indeed a legend.....

5 out of 5 stars A must have for fans of "El Rey"!.......2003-01-14

This CD is outstanding! Even those who burn thier own CD's would have a tough time putting together a greater collection of gutsy and classic Chente performances.
This disc includes perhaps his best-known and loved tune (Volver, Volver) and many other really superb songs ranging from very early to very recent in his career. In my view, great variety and choice of tunes from start to finish make this one of his best, better even than "Historia, Vol. 1" which is a very good CD as well. If you are a Vicente Fernandez fan but don't wish to go broke trying to purchase 50-plus CD's to get most of his greatest songs, one of your first Chente discs should be this one. "Historia De Un Idolo, Vol. II" easily earns five stars, even when compared to the rest of Chente's outstanding and abundant catalog of music.
