Customer Reviews:
Never ever to find more graceful play!.......2007-03-09
The incredible representation and sound Parkening created by the guitar is
sublimity itself. Though I have listened to many a world-famous guitarist,
I have never been so fascinated as by his play. I couldn't but make intimate friends of mine a present of Parkening's CDs like "In the Spanish Style", through which I felt I could show them what real music is like. I never ever imagine I could find more graceful play than that of Christopher Parkening at least in the world of the guitar.
Grunting and moaning explained.......2006-01-03
I met Parkening in 1972, a few years after this album was first released. I asked him about the "groans" that could be heard. He explained that at the time he let his thoughts wander and thought about the future, when some Swiss moron named Peter Gilman would complain about the recording. Absentmindedly, he groaned at the thought of it all. He told me if ever I should meet Peter that I was to apologize.
Peter, sorry about that.
Great Introduction to Classical Guitar.......2005-04-07
My parents had this on vinyl when I was kid. I listened to it a lot in high school when I was listening to a lot of musical styles. This and Parkening's Bach CD are probably my two favorite classical guitar discs.
As a rock/blues/pop guitarist, I've been learning some classical over the last few years. And this disc has been my reference. Parkening's playing is confident and enjoyable. Capricho Arabe stands out as does the Sor studies that he covers.
My only complaint is Leyenda, his performance is less than passionate and the recording doesn't sound EQ'd correctly in a few spots. Other artists have better recordings of this song (John Williams comes to mind).
If you are looking for a great classical guitar CD, this is a great place to start.
Excellent collection.......2004-05-06
This is the album that made me want to take up classical guitar. Great selection of songs, played with incredible feeling and tone. Brilliant performances of Capricho Arabe, Recuerdos and the Villa-Lobos and Ponce Preludes. His rendition of Romance is what every student should strive for. The student (Parkening) has most definitely learned all of his master's (Segovia) lessons and went even further. Still fresh after 25 years of regular listening.
Parkening in top form.......2004-02-28
Christopher Parkening's technical prowess is in full effect here, showing he's truly the ultimate successor to the great Andres Segovia.
I don't know about grunting, but if you listen closely, there is some noticeable sighing from Parkening on a few of the tracks, especially the third. Presumably, he was getting weary from all the work his fingers were getting in playing those immensely complex arrangements. But to go as for as to say it ruins the recording is ludicrous. In fact, the sighing adds to the intimacy and accessibility of the recording. I had always felt distant while listening to a Parkening album because he sounded TOO polished. He plays great here, but to hear his voice, even in its slightest audible sound, adds to the album's charm.
If you're a classical guitar enthusiast, this album is essential.

Excellent recording.......2007-05-12
If you are a fan of classical guitar than this is a must own set. I enjoy every moment.
Highly Recommended!.......2006-12-23
I would recommend this CD to anyone who loves music--period! Christopher Parkening is unquestionably one of the greatest classical guitarists of all-time. He embodies personal excellence like no other and is a brilliant artist. This CD is a must-have for any classical enthusiast. My favorite pieces include: Tárrega's "Recuerdos de la Alhambra," "Romance," Bach's "Prelude No. 6," and Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez." There are other versions of these pieces as well, but I always prefer Parkening's renditions, as they are oh so extraordinary--especially the recording of Aranjuez!! Other guitarists never seem to capture the essence of Rodrigo's musical masterpiece (e.g., Göran Söllescher in "Mad About Guitars"). But Parkening did! And the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was a perfect accompaniment.
This CD is definitely worth buying. Included is a CD booklet, which illustrates the history of Parkening's illustrious career, interesting tidbits about all 25 recorded pieces, and several photos of his early life to his "breathtaking performance" at Rodrigo's 90th birthday celebration at the Royal Festival Hall in London, 1992.
Amazing.......2006-05-08
I am not going to go into great detail. I am working on a degree in classical guitar and I can say this is something to strive for. His musical interpretation of the peices represented here are some of the best I've heard. His tone, color, and phrasing is incredible.
A gentleman musical agreement! .......2006-03-16
In guitar ` s playing there have been many renowned performers, gifted of exuberant technique. But curiously the Apollonian playing is not by itself strictly enough. The guitar is the instrument which is closer to heart as any other one. It demands from you passion and sentiment. There have been three well known guitarists, one of them from England and the other one from Spain and the third one from Japan whose sensibility was totally absent in their performances.
But fortunately for us, there have been notable interpreters that have been maintained a desired balance and contrast between brain and heart, achieving great distinction and total acknowledgement around the world. I would name seven primordial names along the instrument `s story. First of all: the mythic soloist Andres Segovia, Regino Sainz de la Maza, John Williams, Alirio Diaz, Manuel Berrueco, Siegfried Behrend and Christopher Parkening, among the most representative ones of a great list.
Christopher Parkening `s career has made a brilliant colorist, an impeccable and sensitive interpreter of this well reduced repertoire. His profound artistic conviction and convincing phrasing has been a perpetual motive of constant invitations and presentations around the world.
Extreme virtuosity.......2005-09-25
CP has become my chief inspiration to improve as a classical guitarist. His performances here are, without exception, phenomenal. He makes the most difficult pieces sound effortless. I prefer CP over John Williams because, while Williams is also unquestionably a master, he sounds a bit robotic to me at times. CP, on the other hand, never sacrifices musicality to precision. He sublimely maintains both.

Superb performances, superb sound quality.......2002-03-28
This is a wonderful CD! De Larrocha delivers some great performances of many well-known Spanish favourites, some of which you may recognise more by the sound than the title.
The solo piano pieces include Albeniz' Sevilla:sevillanas, which I am sure you will recognise, his Tango and a popular Malagueña.
Granados' Spanish Dance No 5 [sometimes known by other titles] is sensitively performed.
Albeniz' grandfather, Mateo's D major Sonata is the opening track. This music will be recognised by Australian music lovers as the theme music for Margaret Throsby's wonderful music and interview program.
The Montsalvatge Brief Concerto is a most exciting feature of the recording.
Highly recommended. Stunning sound quality.

Customer Reviews:
Liona Boyd.......2007-03-26
It's interesting, I think, to note how Miss Boyd's style and technique seem to polarise the current reviews for her album "The Spanish Album". I certainly wasn't aware that Miss Boyd is regarded as "a light weight" in the classical guitar world.
I can only say that as a humble amateur classical guitarist, I remain an avid admirer of her interpretation of several of the standard classics on this album.
Her virtuosity in Gran Jota has already been referred to: may I also single out the sweet expressiveness of her playing in Capricio Arabe (which I suggest cannot be matched by any other modern recording)as well as the fascinating discords in Asturias.
Liona is the Queen of Classical Guitar Technique?????.......2006-01-20
Yes, and I'm Clark Kent, reporter for a small town daily. Liona Boyd achieved her fame through non musical means. As a musician she leaves a great deal to be desired. Her technique is modest. Her interpretive skills are nonexistent. Proclaiming her "queen of classical guitar technique" is only revealing of one's ignorance. I only wish there was a zero star rating.
If you wish to hear the real McCoy I recommend Martha Masters.
GIMME A BREAK!!.......2005-03-01
"music fan" from rochester--the coward can't even sign his name after he trashes Ms. Boyd's phenomenol talent--where's YOUR latest masterpiece?? "don't waste yer ears"--puh-LEEEZ!! AND "VINCES"--my, aren't we SNOOTY! GIMME A BREAK YOU TWO!! LIONA BOYD KICKS NYLON ASS! BUY THIS CD!
Un-F***ing believable.......2004-09-19
I had never heard of this chick until I started Flamenco lessons. All I can say is WOW!!!
Liona? Please..........2001-06-10
Boyd is, in fact, considered a lightweight in the world of classical guitar. Sure, she's sold recordings, but not anything worth listening to. If you're looking for excellent female classical guitarrists, look for Antigoni Goni and Sharon Isbin. Don't waste your ears on Boyd.

Customer Reviews:
Why buy this?.......2006-06-16
I wouldn't buy a CD with serious sound issues as more than one reviewer said. Also, the Suite Espanola is incomplete and is missing 3 pieces including Asturias, one of my favorites.
Great performance, poor mastering.......2005-11-10
I concur with the other review that this album has some serious sound quality problem. It is different from the problems of historical recordings. Some tracks sounds absolutely wonderful while some other tracks (first few in CD 1) have a very pronounced hissing noise, still more tracks have a shifted balance. EMI really could have done a better job remastering this recording for CD release, and I hope they do in the future for this is absolutely one of the best in terms of performance.
Top notch piano playing of beautiful Spanish music........2005-09-22
This recording is of truly top notch piano playing which undeniably surpasses either of Larrocha's other two recordings of Iberia because of it's supreame technical mastery, rhythmic vitality and corloristic wizardry and ease of these fiendishly difficult, yet beautiful works. Complaints about sound quality in this recording are irrelevant, especially since it is not that pronounced. Besides, one who listens to the great recordings of Cortot, Rachmaninov, Hoffman, etc. knows the value of the actual performance over the sound quality.
Distortion.......2005-09-07
I wish I could recommend this disc more highly, but I have tried 3 copies, all of which had serious distortion on disc 1 at medium to high volume. This performance was originally recorded for Spanish Hispavox and released in the US on Columbia. The LPs had problematic sound, but I hoped this would be cleaned up on the CD. I actually prefer this performance of Iberia to the later one on Decca, although that one is also up to DeLarrocha's high standard. Maybe I've just had bad luck with copies (though 3 bad ones seems pretty odd).
Marvellous music marvellously played.......2000-11-23
This is music which many people may recognise but not have been able to identify. It's the best of Spanish piano music - dramatic and lyrical, deeply romantic and full of complex iberian dance rhythms. Alicia de Larrocha gives it all the colour and excitement it deserves in a bravura performance. I found the 2-disc set, of music half of which was familiar from childhood, but some which I hadn't heard before, deeply mesmerizing.

Outstanding music and great value!!.......2006-04-02
Narciso Yepes is my favorite classical guitarist. I was delighted to hear a couple guitar concertos I had never heard before. Ohana, Bacarisse, and Ruiz-Pipo were great discoveries. Again, Yepes is the BEST. Strongly recommended.
Excellent.......2005-08-22
The late Narciso Yepes is perhaps my favorite guitarist- Spanish or otherwse. With each of his recordings there is the sense of a madman, master, and poet at one with his instrument. I recently purchased "Guitarra espagnola" and have found endless enjoyment listening critically and as background while I work. This is the perfect "not background music" background music to play when you have guests. You and your guests will find yourself withdrawing from lively conversations to enjoy a poignant, sweet, or sinister moment with the music. This is a compilation of recordings from the past 20 to 30 years. The compositions span from the 17th to 20th century. The quality of the recordings is very good but at times varied. The availability of the compilation is very limited. Get it while you can! I also recommend Alirio Diaz and John Williams.
Very Highly Recommended.......2004-05-08
I cannot recommend this retrospective of just a small amount of Yepes's work highly enough.
No matter what popular and lay opinions may be about Williams, Bream, Segovia, and others, the greatest classical guitarist of the 20th century was Narciso Yepes. It is a pity and a shame that the fear of the older generation of guitarists and their associates made Yepes a marginal figure.
He was a consummate technician and a knowledgeable interpreter of all musical idioms from the Middle Ages through to the height of the 20th Century avant-garde. His playing was characterized by intelligence, sensibility, clarity, power, majesty, poetry, and a devilish ability to separate and sustain contrapuntal lines.
In this box of 5 CDs you will find the definitive performance of Rodrigo's now famous "Aranjuez" concerto, which, incidentally, was first recorded and made famous by Yepes. There are also 2 CDs with rare concertos by Salvador Bacarisse, Antonio Ruiz-Pipo, and Maurice Ohana.
The other 3 CD's contain generally the best performances of the canon of solo guitar works that you are likely to find. The composers include Sanz, Mudarra, Narvaez, Soler, Sor, Albeniz, Granados, Tarrega, De Falla, Turina, Bacarisse, Rodrigo, Llobet, Pujol, Moreno Torroba, Montsalvatge, Ohana, and Ruiz-Pipo.
Every guitarist and every lover of the instrument should own this set. If it is not available, also refer to a similar box set with the ASIN number B00006L6RN or another B000026ZRL.

Best of the Best.......2007-02-03
I've been playing classical guitar for over 35 years, both as a professional and now as a hobby. Pepe's versions of Albeniz's song of Sevilla and Granada, on this recording, are the best I've ever heard. Pepe is the "best of the best" when expressing the soul of Spanish music. He was born in Malaga, Spain, which helps understand the sympathies and sensitivities he brings to the music on this album. He plays the music of a Granados, Albeniz and Tarrega with an inbred understanding. He plays his father's music as if he had written it. This album ranks as one of Pepe's best recordings. This album, plus the album of duets, entitled "Famous Spanish Dances",which he recorded with his brother Celin, are a MUST for any classical guitar enthusiast's library. Buy these recordings, if you can. They will bring you hours of pleasure.
"Authentic" style Spanish guitar music.......2005-01-03
A previous reviewer correctly pointed out Pepe Romero's interpretive style as "flamenco influenced" as opposed to the usual "classical guitar" style. This is because Pepe Romero was in fact a flamenco guitarist during his early career, only moving towards the classical repetoire his father performed some years later. This background has always shown itself in his performances so obviously, one hears the traditional flamenco flourishes and soul in his playing in these pieces. Mind you, Romero is not employing a 100% flamenco approach and technique here, but the interpretive leaning is apparent... it can be more accurately described as a mixture of the 2: flamenco fire tempered with classical sensibility and control.
And for the music of Spanish composers such as Albeniz, Granados and Tarrega, this is a very effective approach. Pepe Romero's sound and interprative style... his warm, dark, romantic tone... is one the general public most associates with when they hear the term "Spanish guitar". This isn't the case with the majority of classical guitarists today whose sounds and playing styles can easily make one no think of a variety of other instruments (such as a lute or harpsicord) despite the fact that they play the same instrument Pepe Romero does. Many classical guitarists today focus more on achieving a piano-like consistant sound, and would consider it an disservice to Albeniz or Tarrega to play thier works in any other way but strictly "serious", often nullyfying the unique Spanish characteristics of the music. Pepe Romero takes the opposite approach, he revels in bringing out the more Spanish-folk elements of the music and highlighting them to full effect with either explosive rasguado strumming or emphasizing the dance rhythm or a flurry of blazing spontaneuos scales... the listener simply does not imagine any other instrument but the guitar being able to do this. I would more properly categorize this CD as "Spanish guitar" as opposed to "Classical guitar".
In Pepe Romero's hands, "Sevilla" by Albeniz sounds very spontaneous and fresh, like a brilliant flamenco improvisation... yet at the very same time, refined and elegantly controlled. "Granada" sounds almost like an old familiar folk song to those of us who have heard this piece hundreds of times before. "Rumores de la Caleta" is always performed in the strict piano-like interpretation by classical guitarists. However, Pepe Romero throws caution to the wind and gives us fiery flamenco-styled strumming to replace the usual opening rolling arpeggios. One can almost hear the fierce tapping of a flamenco dancer in Romero's precussive type of chord changes. Indeed, Romero's interpretation allows these images to come to mind where the piano originals never seemed to.
Granados' "Andaluza" is a bit slower than I'm normally accustomed to, yet it's beauty is revealed in a very controlled manner. The Tarrega pieces also take on a new look with some more fiery passagework we don't usually hear, including "Capricho Arabe" which here is highly evocative and more clearly connects to its Moorish idea.
I wasn't crazy about Sor's "Variations on a Theme of Mozart" because it's overplayed and I've never been a fan of Romero's interpretations of this period of music. His style just isn't a good fit for Sor, other than a show of virtuosity. I could have done without this track.
Overall highly reccomended.
Very disappointed.......2003-05-29
Pepe Romero is a fine guitarist, and I like his more recent recordings very much, especially his guitar concerto recordings. However, this CD is a disappointment. The main problem is the horrible recording quality; if you like a muffled, tin can, heavy reverb sound, this may not be a problem for you. And if you like a flamenco-influenced style more than the classical guitar style, then you might be satisfied with these recordings as well. I prefer, for example, Parkening's version of "Rumores de la Caleta" and Williams' performance of "Leyenda." These criticisms notwithstanding, Romero is still one of the best guitarists around. His performance of "Fantasia para un Gentilhombre" with Academy of St. Martin is one of my favorites.
Pepe Romero is the greatest living guitarist ..........2003-01-14
and perhaps the greatest guitarist of the 20th century (and so far of the 21st too). This CD (which should probably have been titled "Spanish Guitar Solos" since that's all there is on it) contains plenty of evidence in favor of this opinion. Although each track showcases Pepe's flawless technique and inspired interpretations, my favorite is "Rumores de la Calleta," into which Pepe incorporates magnificent flamenco strumming. I must disagree with a previous review, which criticizes the speed at which Pepe plays "Les Jeux Interdits" and "Variations on a Theme of Mozart." The former, which he plays according to an AA/BB/A structure, would become tedious if played at a slower tempo, and the latter is intended to be a virtuosic display; Pepe's performance of it is the most exciting I've yet heard. My one criticism of the CD (not serious enough to remove a star) is that several of its tracks are to be found on another Pepe Romero CD, viz. "Spanish Guitar Favorites." But if you already have that one, this CD is worth having anyway, if only to hear Pepe play "Sevilla" with the kind of crisp vivacity only he can produce.
Nice selection, execution is a matter of taste........2001-10-23
Mr Romero has chosen a sound collection of Solo guitar pieces, although It seems that his foremost interest is to display his virtuoso prowess, which somewhat taints the fair. 'Romance' is played far too fast, even a beginning student would be chastised for this. Variations by Sor is also so fast it's silly, all the character of the piece is lost. This CD is very much a matter of taste, some of the pieces are wonderfully played, but I would prefer a more stylish approach.

Very pretty..........2001-01-03
Afro Cuban Lullaby is worth the price of admission alone. One of the sweetest songs I've ever heard. The entire album is clean, well played by Hilary Field, and very pretty. Not a lot of fancy production, just really nice guitar playing.
Her other album, Ballad Stories is also very good.
