In the Cave with the Siddhars.......2007-07-29
I love listening to this as I lay down to sleep, and I feel like I'm in the cave with Nandhi. This is also a CD that veteran meditators will instantly identify with, it cuts across paths it takes you 'there', and
this isn't like your other favorite CDs, you won't find anything like this
thats been touched up in a studio.
Can you say primal?

Those sounds...a mirror for me.......2007-07-11
Thank you for sharing these wonderful arrangements. Cave of the Siddhars. Your music is instantly translated into soul messages. Musical soul massage. I don't know if it was my conscious mind or my unconscious mind but one of them surrendered to the music thanks to the constant didgeridoo in the background. My mind remembered a timeless aspect of itself. Turiya Nada's music that for the first few seconds had sounded extremely exotic fit into the mold of my being, as a result when I combined the music with asana practice I was able to deepen in the poses knowing that I was being "cushioned" by the call of Turiya Nada. The final "Arohara" invocations of the final tracks are perfect for the ending of savasana for me...and I believe for others too.
Thanks,
Nathaniel

"Let Go" of Your Shekels and Buy This CD.......2006-06-15
In other words, LET GO has got that perfect balance of musicianship, tunefulness, and structure that a pop music lover digs. I don't have a lot more to say about this band. Why waste time praising (near) perfection?
SIDELIGHT: The iTunes genre this falls under is "Alternative and Punk." Not. This seems like the default genre selected for contemporary rock/pop bands.

pop perfection.......2006-03-24
My tastes say Nada Surf has yet to prove themselves as a consistently solid band. But it doesn't matter because I forgive them for what they have accomplished on Popular (and the classic video), Blonde On Blonde, and Blizzard of '77. Thank you gentlemen.
Some heartbreakingly beautiful songs among the "rock".......2006-03-20
I am a huge fan of the more romtantic(or lack thereof) tunes on this album...While there is a nice variety to the pop rock pallete, Nada Surf excel best when they deal with heartbreak and existential crisis, as exemplified by some of the album's best tracks..Underneath the safe time signatures lies advanced songwriting skills displayed in subtle touches of instrumental emoting..Overall not a masterwork but a definite worthwhile addition for the many haunting songs for you to Let Go to..

Nada Surf's Shining Moment........2006-01-08
Released in 1996 this LP caused quite the stir in the rock world. Mostly for the smart and sassy tune "Popular." You might still hear that tune occasionally on a alternative rock station.
People who looked past that one hit and picked up this gem were treated to one of the perhaps most overlooked rock albums of the 1990s. Some accused it of being a poor Weezer rip off. I argue its superior in so many ways and its an essentual 90s rock album.
Its an album with Umph. It picks you up, and at least in my case inspires me. When you hit play "Deeper Well" starts pumping and sucks you right into the album. The vibe and the swagger of the record are infectious.
The pacing and song layout are almost perfect.
Ric Ocasek does a masterful job getting a great power sound out of the band. It sounds like a clean garage band recording. For a loud heavy album, its intimate sounding which is quite an accomplishment. All the instruments sound great.

Zen Brain (a perfect closer)
Sadly after this, Nada Surf changed musical directions. Unhappy with this direction shift they were dropped by Elektra Records. I honestly can't blame Elektra Records. When I shelled out $30 plus dollars for "Proxmity Effect" (AU import only in those days) because I was dying to hear it - I was extremely let down. It wasn't what I was expecting. The fun & inspiration was gone, as was the swagger. "Proximity Effect" is a morose, depressing, angsty and even preachy record. I listened to "Let Go" a couple of years ago, which didn't appeal to me either.
Fans of newer Nada Surf releases tend to look down at this effort. This is because it being a louder, brasher, faster, sassier record while having this b*tchin' swagger. Thats not what Nada Surf is today.
This album proudly stands on its own compared to the subdued material that came later.
I'll take this album over anything they've done since. It still inspires me on multiple levels and its brillance still shines brightly.

Produced with Death Cab for Cutie's Chris Walla, The Weight is a Gift is a less elliptical musical offering than Let Go. Just as that 2003 recording put Nada Surf back on the map, after several years stuck in post-major label limbo, their fourth full-length proves its success was no fluke. As before, singer/guitarist Matthew Caws is as much lovesick dreamer as pop culture junkie. Last time around, he was extolling the pleasures of Blonde on Blonde, now it's Paris, Texas ("Comes a Time") and "Lenny Bruce's Bug Eyes" ("Imaginary Friends"). Ultimately though, it's the more emotionally direct material that leaves the biggest impression, like "Your Legs Grow" and "Always Love" (the only song that sounds a little like Death Cab). The one exception would be the fuzzed-out, but still poppy "The Blankest Year," which deviates into darker territory, like the Hollies covering Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life." --Kathleen C. FennessyAlbum Description
The follow-up to 2003's masterpiece, "Let Go", is a perfect pop album sure to alleviate the growing breathless anticipation among long-term fans and recent converts. It carries on the contemplative tone that characterized much of "Let Go" with tracks of heartrending beauty, introspection, wit, and often deceptively dark lyrics, while also displaying the band's penchant for pure pop melody. Produced by Chris Walla (Death Cab For Cutie, The Decemberists, The Thermals).Customer Reviews:

Thank God.
Matthew Caws, Nada Surf's primary songwriter, keeps adding to his already lengthy and impressive musical resume on this album. Songs with jangly and gauzy guitar lines and unforgettable vocal melodies ('Concrete Bed,' 'Always Love,') rub elbows with more moody explorations that are still as sweet as rock candy ('Do it Again,' 'What is Your Secret?').
'Your Legs Grow' floats through the air and ends with a brief deviation into acoustic strumming and ethereal drones. I could do without 'All is a Game' and 'Armies Walk' because they sound tossed off and unfulfilled, but the band answers those mistakes with the superb 'Blankest Year,' which jaunts through its two minutes. 'In the Mirror' and 'Imaginary Friends' are other memorable highlights.
This album is just another example of a band whose best work came well after they faded from the critical eye of major labels and big-market radio.
'Nuff said, except for this: 'Fools' -- a simple, sliding, one-string guitar line with a lilting vocal delivery -- may be the best song of this whole collection; why it's relegated to the bonus disc is beyond me.
All in all, "The Weight is a Gift" is an album that may not grab you immediately, but upon repeated listens its masterful balance of melody and muscianship becomes evident.

Want to really relax?...then give this gem a try!.......2005-12-02
"Nada Himalaya" contains the AMAZINGLY CALMING sounds of beautifully harmonized, genuine (not electronically-generated) Tibetan bells and chimes on track 1 (30 minutes) and track 2 (15 minutes) - with the tranquil background of a mountain stream added on the third and final track (3 minutes).
After listening to the sound samples below, I decided to give it a try - and must say it's the most relaxing CD conducive to deep meditation I've ever heard, so much so that I've ordered Deuter's sequel CD called "Tibet: Nada Himalaya Vol. 2" hoping it'll be as good as this one is!

It's hard to imagine a more disjointed upbringing than Kevin Johansen's: the songwriter grew up in Alaska and Argentina (to an American father and Argentinean mother). As an adult he spent a decade in New York City honing his chops and writing. Since moving to Buenos Aires in 2000, he's become one of Argentina's biggest pop stars thanks to a mildly psychedelic American-style folk song sung in English entitled "Down With My Baby," which is included on Sur O No Sur. The rest of album is filled with same kinds of cultural paradoxes: he mixes the traditional and the modern while peppering his nicely polished pop gems with salsa, samba, rock, rap, reggae, cumbia, country, hip-hop, and tango. Singing in both Spanish and English (and Spanglish), Johansen has the deep baritone of Leonard Cohen, yet his lyrics are far from somber, telling us that he doesn't take himself too seriously. Other highlights included here are the impossibly infectious "Puerto Madero" and the carnival-like title track. --Tad HendricksonCustomer Reviews:

The lyrics can be very intertaining, and the instruments, once you get used to them you may certainly come to enjoy them.
However the main problem lies in the range of Kevin's voice. It is not very good, and in my opinion he would do better if he found another singer to sing along some of the songs.

Paper Sleeve Version of the 1985 Album from the Most Popular Latin Rock Band from Argentina Fronted by Gustavo Cerati.Customer Reviews:
'¿Cuanto Habre Cambiado?
