If you missed 1998's Family Values tour featuring Incubus, Orgy, Limp Bizkit, Ice Cube, Rammstein, and Korn, fear not: 15 tracks from the aforementioned bands, plus "interludes," add up to well over an hour of neo-metal-angst-rap that can be enjoyed without venturing into a mosh pit. The CD is a cool deal in that it contains the best songs from each lineup, including radio hits such as Orgy's cover of New Order's "Blue Monday," Limp Bizkit's breakthrough version of George Michael's "Faith," and Rammstein's incendiary Germanic ode "Du Hast." Korn's medley of older material and singles from Follow the Leader prove why they're the headliners. In fact, this CD--and the tour itself--was partly based on the accurate assumption that Korn have such a strong influence that any band they tour with must appear Korn-approved kool to the kids. Both Ice Cube and Rammstein seem out of place, though kudos to Korn for including them. Ultimately, Family Values '98 is a great sampler for a metal-rap neophyte. --Katherine Turman

1 out of 5 stars Hahahahahaha!!.......2006-09-27

The Family Values Tour is a joke, just look at the bands on here: Korn, Limp Bizkit, Incubus, and Rammstein. NONE of them are any good, as they're all pathetic nu-metal s***. Only 12-year-olds would like this.

If you want a good tour CD, get Gigantour, that has real metal.

4 out of 5 stars Orgy blows the comp. away!.......2006-06-01

And that's very true. Orgy had the best set here. KoRn was decent, Rammstein should have had more tracks as should have Incubus, but it was nice to see Bizkit drop some nice tracks not included on their albums like 'Cambodia' and 'Jump Around'. Ice Cube, no matter what you think, held his own here and is serves us a worthy track selection. Too bad 'Family Values' don't come around no more but with Limp sucking now a dayz it would be pointless. Still, this is a solid album with great live performances...could have been better but then again, it's very rare you hit something perfect.

3 out of 5 stars decent.......2005-06-02

its decent but y is ice cube here he is the worst performer but korn ruled i dont like bizkit orgy was good rammestien was good but only one song dont like incubus

2 out of 5 stars I don't own this, but where is the rammstein?.......2005-05-15

I see that Rammstein peformed on this tour, but where are the songs by them? OK, so they have Du Hast, but common, they have like 20 great songs! Korn and Bizkit suck, let us all understand that who aren't 12 year olds. Orgy and Rammstein need more tracks on this album! What is wrong with the people that made this???

2 out of 5 stars must have been an off-night.......2005-01-18

i'll be first to say that i was totally unimpressed with the sets by korn and limp bizkit but extremely surprised when orgy played the best set by far on this entire album. like many people i bought it when it first came out in 1998/1999 at which point it quickly earned a place at the bottom of my pile of cd cases. i was still a fan of korn at this point and "nu-metal" in general before it was actually called that. what can i say, it all seems silly and stupid in retrospect (and it probably is) but for about a year it seemed like this kind of music was going to be THE new alternative movement in america; comparisons to nirvana and the seattle sound were rampant in music publications. as we all know, this forecast came to naught and record sales started to slip around the time the three year mark of the 1999 breakthroughs of many of these bands was reached. everyone likes to pretend they weren't picking their jaw up off the floor the first time they heard anything from the first three korn albums now that that kind of music has fallen out of favor into the bottomless pit of passe, but the energy from these bands was definately infectious for the time (except for limp bizkit, who always sucked). the first two orgy albums and first three korn albums still remain a guilty pleasure of mine, having come before they became the generic has-beens they are now. out of all the bands featured on this album, korn seems to be the only one (barring incubus) that even has a single leg left to stand on nowadays.

anyway, onto the music. most of the people that bought this album way back in 1998 bought it for either the korn or limp bizkit tracks, obviously. limp bizkit sounds ok but their music is another matter. in short, you can't polish a turd. korn, on the other hand, sound genuinely bad on many of the tracks. jonathan davis sings like he has the flu while fieldy seems to have doubled his bass volume when the engineer wasn't looking before the show. munky and head sound buried much farther in the mix than they should be. overall, a sense of muddiness prevails. the shot liver medley is about the only salvagable thing korn did with their alotted time on the album. the opening bagpipe strains of "shoots and ladders" float out ethereally and then proceed to fall into a mishmash of recent and older korn songs. ice cube and rammstein sound about like you'd expect them to, a huge-scale listening party of their album. this is to be expected; they aren't relying largely on unpredictable conventional instruments to create their on-stage sound and as such sound much more cohesive.

the biggest surprises by far on this entire live album came courtesy of then-newcomers orgy. they were still very much rookies when they played the first family values tour and even now they come across as strikingly tight, cohesive, punchy, and fresh. as such, orgy takes the cake for the best performance on the album.

case in point, i wouldn't run out and buy this album just because you like the bands on it. many of them have released other live volumes that are generally of higher quality to date. most of the music, although less than 6 years old, sounds sorely dated; especially given the shake-ups in the rock landscape over the past few years.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Straight-up House on CD 1; Eclectic & Progressive on CD 2.......2002-02-08

I came across this CD in a local dance music store. It was a rarity indeed. It was only meant for release in Australia, but it somehow managed to make its way to Washington, DC. I really enjoyed this CD. CD 1 was mixed by Paul Jackson (who I believe was a Ministry of Sound resident DJ at the time) and is just about as house as you can get. Funky and soulfoul with great tracks like "Got the Funk", "Funk Music" and of course there is Joey Negro's "Can't Get High Without You". This is one of the best house tracks ever and it put the Subliminal record label on the the map. David Morale's "Needin U" also stands out. CD 1 continues to go strong until "Take Control". Can someone say cheese? Not one of my favorite house tracks. "Take Control" is one of those tracks that make non-dance music fans look their noses at us.

However, the gift of this compilation is CD 2. Mixed by Australian DJ Jayse Knipe, it is includes a variety of dance tracks. Knipe doesn't stick to one genre like his counterpart on CD 2. CD 2 is also darker and less soulful than CD1. Danny Tenaglia's "Elements" is a gem which blends nicely into Mel Ween's "The King." This is my favorite track on the entire CD. Martin Luther King's famous speech, "I Have a Dream" backed up by a hard-pumping progressive house beat takes the speech to another level. The music seems to enhance and magnify the speech's message. And of course, "Three Drives on Vinyl" stands and Medway's "Engage" is probably my favorite trance track. This was the track that introduced me to the genre in the first place. And the CD ends on a positive note with Paul van Dyk's "Words (for Love). Definitely one of Paul's great accomplishments.

This CD is definitely worth getting. However, be prepared to deal with the vastly different approaches from the two DJ's on this compilation. It lacks the continuity that is present on most double CD compilations (even those mixed by two or more different DJs). Yet, it's still a great CD to own.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2002-07-17

This has to be one of the greatest CDs because of the memories of seeing DLG live and dancing to "Tonto Enamorado" and Entregate. This is one of the best tejano bands of all time. The CD also ranks so high because Marcos was still singing with DLG. His voice makes the songs. Although I love the eras with Jay Perez and Emilio singing, Marcos took the band to another level. He is really missed by DLG fans and the band has not been the same since.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT, GREAT, AWESOME..........1999-05-29

THIS HAS TO BE MY FAVORITE OF ALL DLG CDS. THERE IS SO MANY MEMORIES BEHIND EVERY SONG AND EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF MUSIC IS PLAYED AT ITS ULTIMATE. EXCELLENT WORK GUYS! WELCOME ABOARD J.CRUZ (ROOKEY). HOPE TO SEE YOU GUYS AT ISLAND JAM 2000 / SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, TEXAS.

5 out of 5 stars Appeals to all audiences!.......1999-03-04

As a relatively new fan of Tejano music, this group is definitely my favorite. I particularly like the No. 11 song, No Hay Manana, the only song on the CD in English and No. 12, an instrumental. They succesfully bridge the gap between all listeners, those who do and don't speak Spanish.

          5 out of 5 stars A wonderful talent.......2004-10-12

I first heard Wong Faye in a taxi in rural China a few years back. I asked the driver to write down her name, and I spent quite some time later finding a cd of hers to bring home. This was the disc, and I fell in love with her style and voice. Chungking Express came a little later, but if you dig Wong Faye, get that too. I'd give them both two thumbs up, if the term meant anything anymore (thanks ebert)!

5 out of 5 stars Faye Wong is an angel..........2001-05-30

This double CD set contains a live recording of Faye Wong performing in Budokan, like a "Best Of", showcasing her music career. I had no previous knowldedge of Faye Wong other than her performance in Wong Kar-Wai`s 1994 movie "Chungking Express", but I was really surprised by this.

Even though I can`t speak any Cantonese or Mandarin, there is some beautiful music on this CD, and Faye has a soothing, soft voice. Some of my favourite tracks are "Sky", "Promised", and "No Regrets". These songs are superb, despite having the language barrier, as they are sung in Chinese.

Luckily however, she also sings in English on a few tracks - including a cover version of the classic Queen song "Bohemian Rhapsody" and a bonus track - "Eyes On Me" which games fans may recognize as a song from the RPG "Final Fantasy VIII".

I was really impressed with this CD - even though I can`t understand what Faye is singing about, it contains some great music and she has a lovely voice.

          Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Forever Faye Wong!.......2000-09-09

Faye Wong Hong Kong Scenic Tour 1998-99 2-CD collection is a live recording that features 32 of Faye's best songs. It is a memoir of her career as an artist since 1989 up to present. The change of music label in 1997 from Cinepoly Hong Kong (subsidiary of Universal) to EMI allows her to bloom and break through the usual Hong Kong mainstream music style. Faye Wong is now internationally known as the Queen of Asian Pop.

Faye Wong, whose esoteric and catchy performance in Wong Ka Wai's "Chungking Express" has captured praises and attention. The 1995 release "Di-Dar" sold almost 1 million in Asian and had remained one of the hall-of-fame albums in Hong Kong music industry. Coupling up with the Cocteau Twins in 1996, the Mandarin release "Hot and Dry" set the debut of Chinese alternative music.

Upon the change of music label in 1997, the EMI debut "Wang Fei-Faye Wong" sold over 1 million in Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong. The No. 1 hits "You're Happy (So I'm Happy)", "I Don't Want To Be This Way", and "Boring" topped all music charts in Chinese communities worldwide. Faye also performed a rendition of Cocteau Twins' "Rilkean Heart". The 1998 release "Cheung Yau-Travel" remained on IFPI sales chart for almost 20 weeks. No. 1 hits "Red Bean" and "Love Commandments" topped all charts and stayed for almost 40 weeks. The 1999 release of "Eyes on Me", ending theme for Final Fantasy 8 introduced Faye Wong to fans even in non-Asian countries.

Faye Wong had only done 2 tours in her 12-year career. This CD collection witnesses the glory of her career. You will find her best works from both music labels and get to appreciate her soft but high-pitched voice in this live recording.

I do want to point out that this album is imported from Japan by EMI (Japan) Ltd. The songs are all in either Cantonese or Mandarin. The Amazon track listing is incorrect that these songs are Japanese titles.

          Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great Live CD.......2000-06-18

I think this is one of the best Faye's live CD and all the songs are playing great and especially Faye's voice is beautiful. The surprise is singing 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. The other songs are including she was in Cinepoly & EMI records. Great 2CD worldwhile to buy.
