To celebrate 10 years as the world's most popular musical, the cast of Les Misérables threw a phenomenal birthday party at London's Royal Albert Hall in 1995. A decade after Trevor Nunn directed its premiere at the Barbican Centre, and the subsequent move into what became a permanent home at the West End Palace Theatre, producer Cameron Macintosh felt the time had come for a little outing for "the miserables." Conductor David Charles Abell, having climbed out of the cluttered Palace pit, for one glorious night has the entire Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at his disposal and there are appearances from over 150 singers--birthday celebs from Les Mis stagings worldwide--who flocked to the grandiose venue. Hosts for the night are the 1995 London cast: Colm Wilkinson's Valjean has power and beauty in "Who Am I?" and "Bring Him Home," and Michael Ball is a charming Marius. Miss Saigon herself, Lea Salonga, gets the crowd-pleasing favorite "On My Own." The Albert Hall sounds filled to the brim with an appreciative audience that contributes to the festive atmosphere. The result is a real treat for fans and lovers of Boubil and Schönberg's greatest musical--this double CD is an obligatory item in every collection of Les Mis memorabilia. --Yngvil V.G.

5 out of 5 stars The best one I've heard.......2007-04-10

The first time I ever heard Les Miserables, it was on the Original Broadway cast CD. That CD had great vocals, but I didn't realize how much I was missing until I saw the show in NYC. What sets this recording apart from many others, including the OBC version, is the fact that, like the musical, it is through-sung. The complete symphonic recording is also this way, and has all of the music. Although this CD is lacking a few parts, most noticibly a shortend Lovely Ladies, missing a section with Javert, and Gavroche's death, when looked at in terms of the completeness and vocal abilities, this is the best.

Regarding the cast, Colm Wilkinson is THE Valjean. I love his vocals and the expression he puts into the character. Armstrong, as Therniere, is great, as is Jenny Galloway (Mme Therniere). They are both great actors and convey the comedic nature of the parts well. Hannah Chick, as young Cosette is splendid, especially in the fact that she sings right through the accidental gun shot noise in the middle of her song. Gavroche is priceless. The best I've ever heard. Ruthie Henshall does an absolutely brilliant Fantine, incredibly moving. Michael Ball (Marius) also has the supberb vocal ability and expression so prevolent in this cast.

Now, my two favorite characters, Javert and Eponine...Phillip Quast (Javert) is practically flawless. I personally don't like his interpretation of the prologue, but that's just me. Other than that, perfect. He more than makes up for that with his rendition of Stars, and his soliliquy in which he dies. You can visualize him going mad and jumping from the bridge just from his voice...amazing. Lea Salonga's vocal ability is unmatched. Her rendition of A Little Fall of Rain is tearjerking, and you can fell Eponine's pain and anguish throughout the entire CD. Anything with her in it is worth buying.

Finally, this CD has a recording of One Day More sung by the Valjeans from all over the world...amazing to hear.

To conclude, this is the best recording of Les Miserables you can buy.

5 out of 5 stars Great musical! Best singers!.......2007-03-13

This is my favorite collection because the performers are amazing. I don't like the exploding balloon during little Cosette's song, but the lead singers in this CD couldn't be any better.

5 out of 5 stars if you like les miz you can't go wrong.......2007-03-09

personally I am a sucker for a good musical...and music in general...This however is exceptional. I love it, it is one of my favorite versions of the musical, and I have been eyeing this cd for sometime now, i am so happy to finally have it in my collection. the quality is good, the music great, and the voices are fantastic!

4 out of 5 stars My 1st "Les Mis".......2006-10-27

It took some time for this musical to sink in for me but when I sat down to watch this broadcast the characters, plot, motivation(s) and all the nuances of minor characters fell into place -- it was exquisite. Granted some of the voices might not be up to par for more experienced ears and there are technical glitches here and there but this is my favorite. I still admire Hannah Chick for continuing with Castle on a Cloud in spite of the distraction -- that's an actor. I also find the extended applause at the end of some songs annoying but that doesn't negate the 99.99% pure magic previous.

My main beef is that discography is NOT IN ORDER on the second disc, and that works my nerves. I hate having to go in and edit the list.

What worries me NOW is that when it comes to the time to making a film of the musical it might suffer the same fate that Sweeny Todd seems to have looming in the wings. The Broadway musical (ST) was cast with actors, some happened to be stars. I hate it when something as fine as Sweeny Todd, or Les Miserables, would be filmed with stars (OK, JD is both but the director and leading lady have to go) and not actors.

Filming of Les Miserables -- in my life time please. Would it be asking to much to have someone do a remake of 'The Wiz' with spending a zillion dollars on junk? Ok, ok, ok, I'm going to go listen to Philip Quast who is simply amazing and blows my socks off.

5 out of 5 stars Best Les Miz Recording Out There.......2006-09-23

Now don't you disregard this because it says I'm a kid. I am very experienced in theatre and know exactly what I am talking about.
Colm Wilkinson(Jean Valjean): His enunciation is annoying and he tends to rasp and whispers. Great false but not my favorite Valjean.
Phillip Quast(Javert): Brilliant performance. This Aussie is the perfect Javert, his voice is clear and strong, wrapped in emotion.
Ruthie Henshall(Fantine): In my opinion, the best in the entire cast. Her throaty, crystal voice is absolutely exquisite. My favorite singer. That reviewer who said she has an awful voice seriously needs help! She is breathtaking!
Michael Ball(Marius): What can I say? Wonderful as always. Fantastic actor and very powerful singer. I get chills hearing "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables".
Judy Kuhn(Cosette): Nice voice, I do like her better as Pocahontas or Florence (Chess) though. Her accent is extremely blatant. All in all, Rebecca Caine should have been cast but Judy Kuhn is still very good.
Lea Salonga(Eponine): Wow. That's all I can say. She took my breath away as Kim in Miss Saigon and now in Les Miz, she impresses me once again. A magical rendition of "On My Own" and moves me to tears everytime I listen to her death scene with Michael Ball, "A Little Fall of Rain".
Alun Armstrong and Jenny Galloway(M. and Mme. Thenardier): Hysterical performances by both! Such talents! Jenny Galloway is returning for the Broadway revival in November, too.
Michael Maguire(Enjolras): Annoying accent again. Can't they all just sound English? Still, wonderful voice and great delivery. Very satisfying.
Over all, I highly recommend this recording. It is the best I have heard so far. The Original Broadway one was horrid and the London was okay. But this one is thrilling and moving. Les Miz at its best.

5 out of 5 stars The Soundtrack to my Generation.......2007-05-25

First of all I am 30 years old, and if you're my age, you were probably 16-17 years old when this soundtrack first released. I can't count the number of times I put this cassette on my player and went to sleep to the killer tunes. I had one of these players that played both sides without you having to manually turn the cassette over, so I could just let it do its' thing and lay back and enjoy.

I would say that for most of us born in the late 1970s, this 1994 soundtrack was pretty much the soundtrack to our lives - and for good reason. This is one of those rare albums where every track is a winner, there is no filler, and it also introduced (at the time) some pretty groundbreaking new artists.

The best things on this CD are :

1. Lisa Loeb : Her original "Stay" (a masterpiece after all these years) is still here, alongwith a new track called "Fools Like Me".

2. The Juliana Hatfield 3 : "Spin the Bottle" was my favorite song off this album for over a year, and it holds up well even today. I love this group.

3. Lenny Kravitz : Which boy would not relate to the glory that was "Spinnin' Around Over You"? This was a seminal track on the CD.

4. Squeeze : As I grew older, the track I most wanted to play from this was "Tempted" by Squeeze. Its very memorable with a killer chorus. It made this CD.

Ethan Hawke's interludes are fine, and "Bed of Roses" still rocks all these years later. You know, for a film thats close to fifteen years old, this soundtrack pretty much nails present day sentiments and angst as well. I remember the classic line that Winona gets to say - "I thought I would BE something at 23!", to which Hawke responds "The only thing you have to be at 23 - is yourself". It resonated quite well when I was 16, but I suppose young people watching the movie and listening to the soundtrack would gain some wisdom from that too.

Always interesting and never boring, this new edition of the CD deserves a place in your collection. Get it now!

4 out of 5 stars Not owning this "Bites"........2005-04-26

I have to admit I'm one of the people who bought this again even though I own the original version also. Maybe that's because I'm a slacker at heart and I'm still looking for my "Winona", but I'd say it's more for the great music. This soundtrack isn't as consistent as "The Crow" or "Singles" was, but it's a great snapshot of 1994, and fit the movie well. Of course the bonus here, besides the extra pictures and history, is the added six songs. I have to say I didn't really miss any of them before, and three of the six tracks are from Lisa Loeb or Ethan Hawke, but it's nice to have 79 minutes of mostly great tunes. If you have the original copy of this, I'd say you could pass on the 10th Anniversary Edition, since the best of what's here, was here before.

5 out of 5 stars This is so awesome!!!.......2004-07-06

This is one of the best soundtracks ever!!! There's just something about the music in Reality Bites, especially "Stay (I Missed You)" by Lisa Loeb. I remember when that movie came out, you would hear "Baby, I Love Your Way" and "Stay" all over the place. I just love Big Mountain's cover of Peter Frampton's song "Baby I Love Your Way." I swear, when I hear a song from that movie, I have no problem picturing the scene it came from; the song/scene relationships of the movie were so perfect!!! This movie and soundtrack are definite must-haves for everyone!!!

5 out of 5 stars This soundtrack is HOT.......2004-07-03

Reality Bites is one of my favorite movies, and I love the soundtrack for it. At first I didn't really recognize the songs just by looking at their titles, but I was familiar with all of them when I heard them in the movie; so if you're not sure if you know a song or not, try listening to a clip of it. I had the original on cassette and had been meaning to get it on CD, so I was excited to hear that there's a new edition out that has ALL the songs from the movie. The music is awesome, and it's one of the few CD's I have that all my friends will agree on listening to in my car.

5 out of 5 stars worth the money!.......2004-06-14

I graduated college the year this film was released and we bought it on VHS (hey, it was 10 years ago!) as a celebration and kind of a spin on what I'd be facing as a theatre major. I never could find the soundtrack and besides being an ultimate Winona fan, would recommend this to anyone in the mood for a flashback entering their 30s and feel like listening to the genre of the 1990s. "Reality Bites" is "The Big Chill" of our generation and so is the music. The best song is definitely U2 "All I Want is You". It was the most moving in the film and a good long song with true lyrics. "Stay" ("I Missed You") is a classic and so is "My Sharona". I wish the soundtrack crew had opted for Peter Frampton's "Baby, I Love Your Way", but Big Mountain does an honest job. The point of the soundtrack is to relive the film and it succeeds. "When You Come Back To Me" by World Party is also integral to the opening of the movie. Ethan Hawke delivers the same powerhouse performance with "I'm Nuthin'" and on this 10th anniversary CD version "Add it Up" is awesome since it is the explosion between Hawke and Ryder. We also have "Disco Inferno", a song I would have missed on the original track - remember when Ryder is fired and Vickie offers her a job at the Gap, is turned down and slams the door - well she plays this! I really identified with her because she seemed older than the other graduates. "Tempted" is a classic no matter who sings it.

Bottom Line: If you hold the movie in your heart like I do, invest in the music. It's teriffic!

    Amazon.com essential recording

When Jazzie B and his Bristol crew released this debut--which was called Keep on Movin' in the U.S., after its first hit--in 1989, at the height of twice-a-second dance beats, it was a landmark event in the club music scene. They slowed down their rhythms and brought in subtle, soulful vocals (mostly from Caron Wheeler); more intriguingly, they structured the disc like a club DJ set. Some songs, such as the giddy "Fairplay," were presented straight, but others appeared only as almost-instrumental dub or as a groove with toasting-influenced spiels by Jazzie or (in the case of the smash "Back to Life") a cappella. This reissue expands the original with some B-sides, alternate versions, and the fully orchestrated single version of "Back to Life," as well as a superfluous drum & bass remix of "Keep on Movin.'" --Douglas Wolk

i love this right here because what was not on the original album is on this one. my neck tingles from the mems of first hearing it. the one that stands out for me though is not what you think!!!!! for me, it was thast piano part of JAZZY'S GROOVE. just that part DA-DUN-DUH-DUH-DUH-NUH drives me absolutely INSANE!!!! of course, there is KEEP ON MOVIN', BACK TO LIFE, ARE YOU READY, and FEELING FREE that gets me levitated. look here, if you like them grooves that take you somewhere else in their own way, then you will dig this one here.

    5 out of 5 stars Great CD!!!.......2006-11-05

British soul at its best. It introduced Caron Wheeler who went solo shortly after this CD came out. The songs on this CD still sound good to this day. Although the remixes are not necessary, it is a great addition to the CD. The CD is definitely a classic. Buy it now!!!

5 out of 5 stars Their Most Remarkable Album to Date !.......2002-07-01

What a disappointment back in '89 when I first purchased the original cd to find that their biggest hit Back To Life was only an accapella version. You could only obtain the orchestrated video version if you purchased the maxi single cd or the single cassette ! Well, this club edition of the cd more than makes up for lost time. It makes me greatly appreciate what groundbreaking club, dub, and soulfully deep-bass music sounds like. This title is still fresh and unforgettable as the first time I heard it. With it's Jamaican, reggae-influenced grooves Soul II Soul was definitely a musical group that would later be greatly emulated or imitated by others (listen to the European group Enigma's smash 1990 instrumental hit Sadeness)! From the heartfelt and soulful vocals to the rich instrumentation this cd was the blueprint for later artists to be inspired by if not strongly influenced...

5 out of 5 stars Good II Better.......2002-06-25

Ten years after its release, the fabulous debut from inflential Soul II Soul gets re-relased with three additional mixes. A fuse of r&b, reggae, African rhythms, and pure funk, Jazzie B's unique sound would be copied by several pale imitators. Yet, there was no denying the Real Thing. "Keep On Movin'," "Jazzie's Groove," and "Back to Life" sound just as vital as they did back in 1989. This album deservedly went platinum and earned them a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist (which they lost to, um, Milli Vanilli). However, the group began to sell less records with each subsequent release before they finally faded from the spotlight. But the power and influence of this straight-up classic still lives on. This disc comes highly recommended for both casual listeners and soul fanatics alike.

    5 out of 5 stars A Sure "Soul" Delight.......2002-02-11

It's hard to believe that after 13 years of its release, Soul II Soul's "Keep On Movin'" still stands as being one of the best recorded albums ever. Another one of U.K.'s finest brilliantly created a distinct sound in fusing melodic rhythms of Funk, R&B/Soul, Hip-Hop, and Dance. As a result, some of the biggest hits became staples on both R&B and Pop stations during '89 such as the infamous title track and the monstrous classic "Back to Life," both led by female vocalist extrodinaire Caron Wheeler. Another jam is the thunderous "Jazzie's Groove." Bonus treats are also added here for pure listening enjoyment. A sure gem to own.

The most trhilling part of this incredible tribute is the DVD with interviews with the orginal cast members, the director, cherographer, designer and the composer! Truly a collectors dream come true! And to make this tribute even more memorable, there has a collection of photos of the major leads over the past ten years. All fans of great musicial theater will cherish this collectors tribute to a great show.

4 out of 5 stars Toe Tapping music - but disappointing DVD!.......2007-02-08

Having misplaced my original CD, I saw this on Amazon and decided to buy it. I was particularly excited about the prospect of seeing some of the songs recorded from stage productions.

CD1 is the same as the Cast Recording that I purchased before.

CD2 was a bit of "fun". It was interesting to hear the songs that were cut from the "new" show and it's not a great leap of the imagination to see why they probably were. It was also interesting to hear other peoples renditions of various songs from the show. Especially people like Liza Minelli, Melanie Griffith and even Linda Carter (yes, our very own "Wonder Woman").......

While I love the show and the music of "Chicago", I have to say I was disappointed by the DVD in this set. The feature about the re-opening of Chicago, was informative, but would have been better if intersperced with clips from the show(s) or even rehersals. The section that I was most excited about, the stage numbers of "All That Jazz", "All I Care About" and "When You're Good To Mama", were not the entire numbers recorded from a stage production......nor were they in English! There were clips from various productions (Japan, Germany...and a few others) all edited together to give the viewer a brief "taste" of the song in different languages.

I would have been much happier with the 3 songs, recorded from the stage production, sung in their entirity, in English.

That is the only bad thing I have to say about this set.

Definitely a buy for huge "Chicago" fans only. For the more casual admirer, go and buy the original cast recording album.....you'll be just as happy!

5 out of 5 stars the new Razzle Dazzle.......2007-01-24

It is unfortunate that the previous reviewer (who disliked this boxed set so much he reviewed it twice) did not read the product description first to understand what he was buying. Yes, this celebration of the tenth anniversary of the revival of CHICAGO does include the original CD; those who own that disk and have only a casual interest in the show may not want to purchase this. But for less than twice the price of the single CD, this set offers a taste of the many stars who have done turns in this production since it opened (including the original 1975 production), both on Broadway and around the world, plus a DVD of interviews with those involved in the production, and a booklet full of other goodies. Perhaps no one NEEDS a version of "All That Jazz" in German, but what fun! If you can't distinguish Brooke Shield from Ann Reinking or Liza Minelli from Bebe Neuwirth, by all means don't buy this boxed set. But if you want to catch some of the razzle-dazzle you may have missed, enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars No Razzle Dazzle.......2007-01-11

I enjoyed both the revival production and the revival CD of Chicago. When they came up with the marketing ploy of a special 10th anniversary multi-disc set, this "Chicago" fan bought it even if the revival CD (which I already have) is part of the set. The various artist disc of famous stars who have starred in the production in the last 10-years did not offer anything exciting or interesting in their rendition other than their famous names. Worse, the documentary was not well presented and the clip from the show was actually just a teaser. It is so sad because Chicago is now the longest running revival in Broadway history and they have decided to put up a forgettable memorabilia that "Chicago" lovers will not treasure in the years to come. Such a waste. To ironically paraphrase a line in the show, there was simply "no razzle dazzle".

The Def Jam box tells a story of a sound, a movement, and a lifestyle. Filled with a veritable who's who of hip-hop (3rd Bass, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Slick Rick, EPMD, Beastie Boys) and some sizzling R&B cuts, this four-CD set is both a greatest-hits package (of the Def Jam/Columbia era) and a shout out to the label that understood the culture--and, more important, knew how to make others get it, too. Perhaps the greatest praise one can give Def Jam is that the label still matters, years after this set was released (see late-1990s efforts by Method Man and Jay-Z, for example). If all your old 12-inches are worn to the groove, then this is a must; but be you old school or new, this collection should be in any hip-hop fan's collection. --Amy Linden

    5 out of 5 stars "Eat Cool J cookies".......2007-05-26

I bought this compilation because I was looking for L.L.'s greatest hits and stumbled on this collection. It's all THAT and then some!!!!! I absolutely screamed when I saw Oran Juice Jones! We sung that to school everyone morning and threw back phrases from the song to the brothers that were whack! When I play it, my daughter just looks at me and shakes her head.

This generation don't know that "hip-hop" is a state of mind and it is not defined by "bling" or brand names. We were just into the music. (even though I did have some big square earrings M.C. Lyte was rocking in the "Paperthin" video!)

This is indeed a classic for ANY hip-hop fan!

3 out of 5 stars A mish mash of rap.......2006-09-13

Wow. For 60$ this is one big, hit or miss collection. For every `Rebel Without A Pause' there's a `I Need Love'. For every `Jack the Ripper' there's a 'The Rain'. With the same money you could get the original `Bum rush the Show' `Nations of Millions' `Strictly Business' `Bigger and Deffer' `Cactus Album' and `Pauls Boutique' CDs. Look elsewhere for your Hip Hop hits.

    5 out of 5 stars The DEF-initive Collection.......2005-08-13

This is without a doubt the greatest rap / hip hop / r&b compilation on the market. I highly doubt another label can or will release anything that can come close to this. High octane party music that can go to any party! This collection is smokin' from start to finish. There's no bad song in here anywhere. Every song rocks the house with such substance that this could easily accompany a club DJ and you'd hear the 'whoop-whoops' and the 'oh yeahs' from the crowd. These sings still hold their own and if you get a chance to read the booklet that comes with it, you'd be surprised at how much info is in it. Definitely 10 stars in my opinion!

    5 out of 5 stars Wow, I can't believe there isn't a review here. .......2005-08-07

This is an awesome box set. It does a great job of summing up Def Jam's first decade. This is all essential hip-hop. It comes from the days when it was less about the pose and more about the skills.
There are many forgotten gems to be found here. Onyx - truly a group of crazy gravel-throated mofos. 3rd Bass - forgotten pioneers in the realm of white hip-hop (I know Eminem has never mentioned them). Many of the greatest tracks by LL, the Beasties, PE, and Run-DMC are here. I think to really get Public Enemy though, you have to buy the invidual albums.
Another great thing- if you already own "The Hip-Hop Box", there are only a handful of tracks on this that overlap with that. Added bonus in my opinion.
So if you want to learn about the early DIY spirit of Def Jam and see thier astronomical influence on early hip-hop, I strongly recommend picking this one up.

4 out of 5 stars Pure Classics .......2004-09-11

This is the type of compilation albulm that has to be in your collection. Here is why.

1.) You got classics that are now hard enough to find, let alone on seperate cd's.

2.) When is the last time a cd came with a booklet that was just as interesting. This is great for understanding where hip hop/r&b came from (as far Def Jam) and where most music is at today.

3.) No cd of the four outshines another one. With such good songs and so many of them, it's hard to decide which cd you want to play.

They should think about doing for 1995 to 2005. They have a wider selection of artist to choose from. Though they all may not be classics like these, they are guaranteed to please the hip-hop/r&b lover in all of us.

5 out of 5 stars the best tracks on the higher octave label.......2002-01-08

Almost anything on the higher octave label is worth listening to! I have a number of the albums from where this compilation was derived but to have all the great tracks on one album is something special. If you enjoy modern instrumental then this is the album for you.

BadBoy reigned supreme in the mid to late 90's. Puff and his artists had a swag all their own. They started the bling craze and raised the bar for what a black label should be. Like Puff said, it's not just the music but a lifestyle.

2 out of 5 stars The Hits? There Was More Than This (Rating: 4 out of 10- -2 stars).......2006-12-22

To be honest, the only reason I bought this CD, was becasue there was a DVD that came with it. This so called "The Hits" really doesn't showcase the hits that Bad Boy made. First: If Diddy was trying to help perserve the legacy of The Notoroious B.I.G., then there should be more songs on here, since Biggie did have the most hits from Bad Boy. "Juicy" should have been on here but it isn't. Nor is "Sky Is The Limit". Second: There has been newer Bad Boy talent since Biggie has died. The latest song I see on here, not to include "Victory 2004", was "I Need A Girl Part 2". There have been many songs from many artists that should have been on here. Bad Boy's Da Band could have atleast had a spot on this album, just to show some love for that group, even if they were unbalanced. What about G. Dep's "Lets Get It"? or Shyne's "Bad Boyz"? I can sit here and type all day of artists and some songs that could have been on this list.

Don't get me wrong though, the majority of these songs on this CD are good. Craig Mack's "Flava In Ya Ear (Remix)" is still dope as it was back in '94. "Mo Money, Mo Problems", "Big Poppa", and "All About The Benjamins" were also some of Bad Boy's major hits. I don't know why "Hypnotize" is edited on this CD (and poorly if I might add). Also 112's "Only You (Remix)" left out Mase's verse and only has Biggie's rap verse in the beginnng. Also there is a bonus track "I'm No Killa" by Mase, and it's wack too.

The DVD I had came with this had some of the hits from the company. It doesn't have the remix to Craig Mack's "Flava In Ya Ear" but it has the origonal. It's still good if you ask me. Most of these songs that were on the audio CD are on the DVD. I still they should have put "Juicy" on here, but didn't. That was the biggest dissapointment for me on this whole release. Maybe it was becasue it was going to be saved until the reissue of "Ready To Die" was going to hit stores months later.

Regardless of why this was released, there should have been more material on this one than whats on here now. I really can't recommend this to anyone, unless they're Bad Boy fanatics, and even they will be dissapointed with this. My only solution is that if you want a Bad Boy's Greatest Hits CD, you can make one yourself, if you haven't already.

    3 out of 5 stars Missing one!.......2006-12-12

What about "One More Chance" the remix? How could they forget this popular one?!!! This was the jam of the day through out late 95 to early 96.

1 out of 5 stars Man f*** damn near all these so called hits........2006-07-29

The most untalented producer in the business. Honestly the only tracks that shine is all the ones with Biggie and Black rob's only one hit. The rest of this is trash. Especially those chickenheads Total. And once again Puff tryin to eat off Biggie carcass. Dont give this bum anymore money, Just listen to Biggies two gems and "f" the rest.

    5 out of 5 stars A whole decade.......2006-02-12

Man, it's been more than a decade since the Bad Boy family formed with P. Diddy as the CEO. Honestly I admire him, he has produced amazing songs and 1's of course. This CD contains rather some of their biggest hits. Rather because there's OBLIGATORY songs that aren't included such Loon's "How you want that", Mariah's "Honey" remix and don't forget about Faith's "All night long" (It sounds like the same set he released in 1998 but with a few new songs). Anyway, there's greatest joints such "Big poppa", "Hypnotize", "It's all about the Benjamins" and of course the Grammy winning "I'll be missing you".
The Bonus DVD includes 11 videos of the best Bad Boy's songs.

4 out of 5 stars Three CD's compacted into Two.......2007-01-09

That's really what this is. In 2004, Kyoto Jazz Massive celebrated 10 years of their music, and with loads of friends from around the world, they came up with a three cd series. They were titled "RE: KJM" (Red Cover), "For: KJM" (White Cover), and "By: KJM" (Black Cover). These three discs were straight imports, and initially retailed at about $30-$40 state-side. Re: KJM had artists re-interpreting many of their songs. For: KJM had songs dedicated to them and even had a song done by them. By: KJM featured KJM's remixes. This one, the gold covered "10Th Anniversary", is a double disc set released by Compost Records (their label in 2002) featuring many of the songs from there along with a mix from a random 12" of their tunes. Yup - the three discs came out in 2004, and this gold one came out in 2006. A bit of a delay.

The music here's good. Energetic and neat broken beats on the tracks. CD1 starts out with Quantic's rendition of "Brightness of These Days", followed up by a neat broken beat mix of "Where Love Shines" by Incognito - given the trademark Kyoto Jazz Massive percussion treatment. It's such an alive sort of sound... the cut kind of reminds me of a Jiva song. That's followed up with Phil Asher & Rasiyah in "Time to Fly", the opening track on "For: KJM". Great song, nice glide, gentle soul. Other highlights were Kenny Dope's take on "Shine" (man, I miss THAT Guida De Palma, where it wasn't forced!). Other hits were Domu's, Kaidi Tatham/Dego and Afronaught's tracks. Basically, a broken beat fest of cuts.

CD 2 starts out with Da Lata's take on "Ronca de Cuica" which was solid, but not that impressive to me. Jazztronik's crazy beat-heavy version of "Shine" pumped up the album quite a bit. Strange song, but interesting, all the same although the beats, after a while, feel distorted (and it wasn't my speakers... take great care of those!). "Aphrodite" by Louie Vega and EOL was one of my favorites though of the three disc series... really nice latin vibe to it with the drums, xylophone and guitar in harmony. Nice little cocktail jam. Monday Michiru put in a very nice take on one of KJM's biggest cuts, "A Calmaria", with a poem as she does. Would've been even tighter without some of the electronic in it - but still a wonderful song. Other highlights from disc 2 were Sleep Walker's version of "Eclipse" and I lked Aurora's "Nacel Do Sol"... Nacel Do Sol in particular takes me back to the good old "Bossa Tres... Jazz" days.

So is this one worth it? It's really up to you & what you want. If you like Kyoto Jazz Massive, but don't want to dish out maybe $90 for the three cd's (at one point, the red and white ones used to be $50 each!) then definitely. But keep in mind that it doesn't have all of the songs from the others (Markus Enochson had a remix to one of the tracks that actually got pretty popular, but isn't featured on this), and that the black "Re: KJM" was a mixed set with some fading/crossing (this one is all, 100% stand-alone tracks). Also be on the lookout for some of the cuts on vinyl. Also, unlike the others, this version is NOT in Kanji. Finally, KJM haven't stopped putting out music & producing. Shuya Okino JUST produced an album loaded with broken beats, while Hajime Yoshizawa (the uber-talented pianist) still works on different projects and with other groups (Sleep Walker, Bossa Free, etc.) and KJM in general are still alive and kickin' bossa beats. As the three albums and this one proves, they've got loads of fans and peers that can't wait to see where the future takes them.
