This collection includes Ernesto Lecuona's complete 1954 recordings plus a series of 78s made in 1927-28. Ten of the recordings were previously unreleased. This is a lot of lightweight Cuban piano music to deal with at once, but it's definitely worth doing. Lecuona's music, which is having a major revival, may not be important. But it's consistently charming and entertaining. The 78s, which sound surprisingly good, reveal even more of a virtuoso than do the later recordings, but throughout we hear playing that expresses the spirit of the music extremely well. And yes, the famous Malagueña is here, sounding very sexy. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars Lecuona Plays Lecuona.......2007-05-12

Oh Boy! What can I tell you about this magnificent collection of musical jewels from our Maestro Lecuona. I bought the original Long Playing Record back in the 50's in my country.
I purchased it again shortly after my arrival to the US, and I was lucky enough to buy it on DVD from Amazon, once I found out they had it.

5 out of 5 stars Lecuona the Cuban pianist is Great!.......2005-08-17

In my opinion this is one of the best CD's from Lacuona, Most of his piano compositions are recorded here (original ones), What, Ms. Leslie Gerber forgot to mention is that Mr.Lecuona was a band leader,"Lecuona and the Cuban Boys", remembers him? Or maybe she does not have sufficient information about him. The music from Lecuona still is very well alive today. I came across his recordings on my own, no one ever told me about this great pianist. I happened to hear the Malague?a by another great Cuban composer and band leader Perez Prado (The Real Mambo King) in one of his albums and Lecuona was the author. That got me interested in him. I'm pretty sure that Ms.Leslie Gerber does not mean any harm trying to put this composer down. It's just that maybe all she knows is Gerber baby food stuff!

4 out of 5 stars The Cuban Chopin.......2004-06-18

What a great album and great value. There is music here that will make you smile, break your heart, inspire you, and Lecuona's skill is breathtaking. If you enjoy classical piano music (with a Cuban/Spanish influence), you'll love this. No, it doesn't display the virtuosity, complexity or seriousness of Lizst, Chopin or Beethoven, but it's fun, beautiful, dramatic yet accessible. You'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars Lecuona, the musical genious . . . . ........2002-10-16

I feel compelled to identify myself first. I am Cuban born who arrived in the US in 1960 at the age of 16 years old. I am a US citizen since 1965 and a US Army Veteran of Viet Nam. I will die defending the right Ms. Leslie Garber has of expresing her opinions. But what I will not condone is her ignorance. To say that Lecuona writes "lightweight Cuban piano music" and that "Lecuona's music may not be important" is to show ignorance. A musician that composes GREAT music in several genres of the music world, a musician that in all genres has highly succesful pieces, and, a musician that after many years, (70-80 years) is still heard and admired can not be called other than MUSICAL GENIOUS and a CLASSICAL MUSICIAN. His music is so beautiful that it will live forever. From his Afro-Cuban compositions, to his romantic popular boleros, to his valses, to his Zarzuelas, Lecuona demonstrates once and again, time after time his immense musical talent. His Afro-Cuban "Cafetal", his romantic boleros "Noche Azul" and "Amapola", His vibrant and colorful "Comparsa" and "Andalucia", his classical Valses, just to mention a few things, makes Lecuona to stand together with the great musicians of the world. The fact that Hollywood made a film around "Estas en mi corazon" and that great singers, like Placido Domingo, want to sing Lecuona's music speaks immensely well of Lecuona/s greatness. The fact the popular instrumental orchestras like Faith, Conniff, Mantovani, Cugat have arranged and interpreted a lot of Lecuona's music also says a lot about Lecuona's versatility in his work. Lecuona is probably important to many millions of people and his music is certainly not lightweight. And if the only thing Ms. Garber can say about "Malaguena" is that "it sounds very sexy" is to demonstrate that she does not know a thing about music. It definitely does not give her the priviledge of commenting about Lecuona's music.

5 out of 5 stars LECUONA IS NO LIGHTWEIGHT.......2002-02-27

Lecuona is one of the most important composers of Latin-America. He is by no means the "unimportant" and "lightweight" Leslie Gerber (whomever that may be) claims, having been hailed for performances of his earlier (and "less mature") works by the likes of Maurice Ravel.

In my opinion the highlight of the set is the devilish "La 32". It's also interesting to compare his interpretations of the same works at different times in his career, like the two recordings of "Por que te vas?" and "Amorosa", especially keeping in mind that Lecuona seldom notated and improvised quite frequently, leaving the transcription work to his students.

5 out of 5 stars This Collection has it all !!.......2003-08-31

Javier Solis' collection of unfogettable love songs, what a
"Torch" singer! he must have carried the Torch for someone to sing his love songs with such feelings the way he did!( just like Frankie did for Eva Gardner)
This CD. has it all Tangos, Boleros, Rancheras all sung to the masterful mariachi arrangement of F.Z. Maldonado(the Mexican Nelson Riddle)This was Javier Solis' highest selling L.P. at the time of it's release with such memorable songs as Sombras,En Mi Viejo San Juan, Cuando Calienta El Sol, Songs that have become closely associated with Javier Solis, in my opinion there's not a weak trak in the whole bunch!
This CD is sure to compliment anybody's music collection, Listen to it with someone you Love!

5 out of 5 stars Voice of voices.......2002-07-03

At 15 years old I heard Javier for the first time eventhough, he had already died. Slowly, this voice melted into my heart and now at 51, I still can't get enough of the same songs. "Cuando calienta el sol" is beatifully performed by this magnificent voice. His premature death has me saying, "there were too many romantic boleros that needed to be sung by this particular voice that were left begging and poor because they were not recorded by Javier Soliz." I have one question for the recording companies. "Why haven't you released the other great recordings by Javier with songs like, ""Siento Alejarme de Ti, Mi Medallita, Desierto en el Alma, etc.""?" I would buy this CD in a heartbeat as I know others would, so please release these recordings. We fans recognize that this voice does not come around but only about every hundred years. His premature death in his late thirties and the fact that he only sang in Spanish was a loss for the whole music loving peoples of the world.

I have been listening to Javier Solis for over 40 years. My dad would listen to his albums early every Sunday Morning. He would come and get my sisters & I to dance with him! Sombras was my favorite. Javier wrote his love songs to this famous movie star in Mexico who never returned the love. He loved her all his life. He sang with such passion. Even if you don't understand the vocabulary, the intensity of his passion is definately understood. I love listening to him. I bought two of his CD's, one for my dad and one for me. I have been looking for this CD for years! Thank you Amazon.com.

Phenomenal-This disc really blew me away. Tirino's other discs in this series on the BIS label were extraordinary-but here he tackles for his final volume some of the popular elements of Lecuona's compositional style, and surpasses all expectations. WOW! Such Cuban style in his playing, the arrangements, and playing of others-the first three Afro-Cuban Dances made me want to dance. I recommend this disc highly, even to those who don't like classical music. Tirino and Lecuona are one in the same as far as I'm concerned, and no one can touch him!

Imagine Take 6, backed by the Gipsy Kings, recording an album of contemporary Brazilian songs in the original Portuguese, and you get some idea of the enchanting folk-jazz hybrid served up by Boca Livre on its first U.S. release, Dancando Pelas Sombras. The four male singers from Rio de Janeiro have added harmonies to recordings by the likes of Milton Nascimento and Gilberto Gil over the years, and now they step to the foreground with a collection of their own songs, plus several by their former employers. "Boca livre" is Portuguese for "free mouth," and the quartet's vocals are quite inventive, employing both counterpoint and close parallels to open up the harmonies of Brazil's sophisticated pop tradition. "Dancando Pelas Sombras" is Portuguese for "dancing in the shadows," a phrase which suggests both the rippling rhythms and husky timbres of the foursome's arrangements. The four men accompany themselves on nylon-string guitars, flutes, bass, and steel-string guitars and are joined by two hand drummers. The result is an understated, lilting backing which suits the intricate vocal patterns perfectly. At times Boca Livre emphasize the sweetness of its harmonies too much and the African rhythms of Brazilian music too little, but for the most part the weave of the quartet's voices is exceptional in both its skill and imagination. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars Martel has richness for Latin American songs.......2005-08-30

In this recording of unusual South American art song repertoire, Canadian soprano Agathe Martel has a richness of sound that she uses expressively throughout. More importantly, she uses it musically, changing her tone to express the music -- at exactly the right moment! Fellow Canadian pianist Marc Bourdeau's clarity of musical ideas, sense of touch and rhythmic finesse show him to be a fine musician with an especially subtle sense of rubato.
The songs of Argentine composer Guastavino are the "easy listening" of the album, but some are particularly beautiful. I loved the spicy harmonic language in those of the Brazilian Camargo Guarnieri. Of those by the Barizilian Alberto Ginastera, "Cancion al arbol del olvido" is a beautiful song in every way! It's very original while seeming traditional. Another Brazilian, Carlos Lopz Buchardois is very traditional, but "Oye mi llanto" is a tender and  touching lament, and Martel and Boudreau express it beautifully. The songs of Brazilian Heitor Villa-Lobos are easily the best-written. And though I like the final "Samba classica," despite its terrible text," I loved "Serenata" the most of any song on the CD. It's very much in the grand manner, and with Martel's expressiveness, it's absolutely gorgeous!
I may well wear this CD out!
