DJ Shadow, a.k.a. Josh Davis, could be credited with bringing newfound introspection to the gloating sounds of hip-hop. Condensed with urban oscillations and scatological beats, Endtroducing shutters with eclectic samples and aural montages that reach beyond the constraints of hip-hop style. Enhancing the mix with fundamentals of rock, soul, funk, ambient, and jazz, the modern fusions fail to go unnoticed, even by the casual listener. While most of the tracks are compiled by layering samples from vinyl treasures found in used-record bins, the production quality of the mosaic is unmatched. Darkened melodies carry throughout the album with its eye on the end of the tunnel. The narration samples come from numerous sources and keep the listener involved and waiting for resolution. With a message as fragmentary as an overheard conversation, Endtroducing conveys no apparent conclusion, but begs the mind, body, and soul for some rewind. --Lucas HilbertAlbum Description

"The Music Comes Through Me...".......2007-07-06
I try to avoid cliches but sometimes they are exactly that for a particular reason. In other words they're right. Okay, this still sounds like music beamed down from above. It sounds other-worldly, it sounds elsewhere...very, very different.
One of my friends is almost exclusively into dance music, has seen DJ Shadow live, and yet still can't quite get into this. My own take on it is that it's a DJ album you can't actually dance to. I mean you could if you wanted to but that's not quite the point. It's far more important than that.
It's just the sound of it all. And this is bass-heavy sampled heaven. 'Building Steam With A Grain Of Sand' builds to a scenario where it sounds like the tinkling ivories are battling the angels of heaven or your imagination whereas 'The Number Song' sounds simultaneously like it's old school excitement, something approaching the here and now, and the very future. Scratching and the skattering, clattering drums. Just excitement. And things like trying to remember that this is all sampled music. It is not live. Just very much alive. 'Changeling' has swampy drums drowned in some muddy production before it takes off and that scratching arrives followed by that bass and then...
Listening to this now I'm struck by how fearless it is, how it taps into a neglected part of you. How it just is. How I struggle sometimes to believe there could actually be a mass market for this. For something this challenging.
You may want stand out tracks but if that's the case, i think I'm struggling. Music this spontaneous (and yes, I know it isn't and there's the trick, the very height of the artistry here...)washes over you as a whole. You feel it or you don't but you hardly worry about which track you're listening to.
Having said that though, if you did want moments, that tension in music when things just work, then you might, just might go for 'Stem/Long Stem'. It soothes and then it builds and then...
'Midnight In A Perfect World' is possibly the most perfect song title ever but i'm still stunned that the song itself doesn't disappoint. A most mellow start until the drums arrive but then keyboards soothe and soulful vocals double that effect. An undercurrent of scratching and repeated mantra-like vocals. Midnight. Midnight. Midnight.
I'm probably more stunned though by 'Napalm Brain/Scatter Brain'. That bass. That bass...And then those drums. And the spectral keyboards at the end. Where does he get all this stuff from? And what happens next? And it goes without saying that we will never have an inkling as to how he then does what he does and makes it all fit together.
'What Does Your Soul Look Like' is definitely the most perfect song title ever and as a song surfaces twice here. You decide which version you prefer.
When people talk about an album being groundbreaking they usually mean 'worthy' and not necessarily something you'll want to listen to over and over again. This though is groundbreaking in the real, the true sense of the word...things beyond. Just listen and expect to be swept away.
The beginning and the end of something not yet heard.
In Car Freestyle Session Instrumentals (Rating: 9 out of 10- -4.5 stars).......2007-05-20
DJ Shadow really shows the art of turntablism and blending vinyl records and sampling (and I mean at it's best). You really have to understand the type of sound that he is trying to create on every track, and it flows real nice. Most of the track vibe real well, something that a lot of instrumental tracks don't have that much, if at all. "Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt" is one of the tracks that flow so easily
There were some tracks that I weren't feeling too much. "The Number Song" really didn't stand out to me because of it's high energy and high live sounding effect. Also, I personally thought some of the songs were a minute too long (mostly those two song in one track songs). At a point, I was like, "Damn, how long is this song???". Also I'm mad that "Why Hip Hop Sucks In '96" is only 35 seconds long. In my opinion, that is one of the best beats on the album. But thats all the bad things I can think of.
"Entroducing..." is one of the best instrumental tracks you'll hear. At a time in '96 when hip hop was changing, this would have been a breath of fresh air to hear (espically when people were starting to loose their origonality). This album blows The Outsider as well as Funky Skunk away. There are no vocals on here, except for the samples. This is just pure music to vibe to real easily. Whether if you're driving in traffic, or chillin' in your bed, or if your preference is jazz, or hip hop, this is one album that you will enjoy. Peace.

Worst Global Underground Ever.......2007-07-28
A welcome change.......2007-07-08
Anyways, I'm not even sure how the hell to classify the first CD, as it's an energetic frenzied mix of electro, breaks, acid, and guitars. If you're familiar with Ed Banger's catalogue, then you'll have a good idea of what Adam Freeland's going for, as SebastiAn, Justice, and DJ Mehdi all make appearances here. From the moment the CD starts, the energy hardly lets up and Freeland flies through some absolutely sick cuts. A few tracks and sequences that stand out especially are "F**k," "Floating," and "Signatune" leading up to the devastating "Sharpen the Knives." Definitely not for the faint of heart.
The second CD, although less intense, is much more varied. The first three tracks are hypnotic and fairly subdued before building up to a track by 120 Days, a band whose sound reminds me of Kasabian if they went a more psychedelic route. From there Freeland goes through some techy minimal into a downright weird track by James Holden before getting back to a more conventional rock sound with Silversun Pickups (!), which took me by surprise. Many of these groups/bands would be more familiar to indie rock fans than progressive heads, but that doesn't mean there's a drop in quality here. Freeland continues this sound until the mix comes to a distorted fuzzed-out close.
Clearly the people who went out and bought this before doing any sort of research (are they familiar at all with Freeland's track record??) or sampling have themselves to blame. I suggest that anyone else who is curious about this release would sample some of these tracks before making a decision. It's not the best GU mix by a long shot, but it's way more fresh and exciting than a lot of releases lately.

The sequel to 2002's Verve Remixed follows and improves upon the original's formula; take material from the storied vaults at Verve Records and let top DJs of the modern era have at them. Featuring an impressive roster of dance artists like Miguel Migs, Koop, and Fila Brazillia, the trick is matching DJ with jazz standard in a way that compliments both. It's a tough chore, given the classics involved and the need to do them justice. On Sarah Vaughan's "Whatever Lola Wants," Gotan Project manage the task with distinction, filtering rustic and romantic accordions through the song's lusty machinations. Astute choices are required, like Mondo Grosso's decision to build a solid thump out of just the central melody of Archie Shepp's "Blues For Brother George Jackson." Sometimes, the best thing to do is get out of the way; Mr. Scruff's Soul Party Mix of "Do What You Wanna" only adds some background party noise to Ramsey Lewis' ripping keyboard solo. VR2 doesn't hit the mark every time, but the combinations that work accomplish what only the best dance music does--they crumble the walls between genres and encourage us all to get down together. --Matthew CookeCustomer Reviews:

VERVE/REMIXED 2 consists of 14 newly remixed songs. Disc packaged in clear jewel case; total running time: 72:08. Booklet does not include information about the original recordings (not even songwriting credits).
There are once again two remixes of Nina Simone recordings. There are also two Ella Fitzgerald recordings remixed. Several instrumental tracks are remixed - I don't get the point of that, but they are included here.
This sequel is not nearly as good as the original.

After cutting his teeth in spoken-word and rap-battle circuits, Sage Francis launched into hip-hop, sort of. On his first handful of nationally visible solo records (Known Unsoldier being the must-have of the bunch), Francis knotted his stylistic roots, mixing his vocal skills in an emcee's equivalent of cracking his knuckles. As Non-Prophets--with DJ Joe Beats--he signaled his hip-hop arrival on Hope, with referential credentials blaring over beat-down backdrops. Of course, he'll tell you all this himself, and more, and does. The first proper track on Human the Death Dance, "Underground for Dummies" brings all comers up to speed on the Francis oeurve. Thus primed, Francis outs with the clearest presentation of his entire, moody, linguistic repertoire. He's had it in him for years, but this time around, he learned to make a mix tape. In one exemplary run, "Got Up This Morning" brings in revenant folkie Jolie Holland for a back-porch jam that rags on the deserving Charles Bukowski, then "Good Fashion" muscles forward, percussion-free, on the strength of a pounding string ensemble. Finally, "Clickety Clack" explodes forward in a thunderous, dungenous groove. It's hip-hop, sort of, but if this is a death dance, good riddance to the deceased. --Jason KirkCustomer Reviews:

Now that I said that here is my review.
My personal favorite stuff from him is the Sick series. Personal Journals was very good but different (just like the song says) Healthy Distrust I needed to listen and listen again to actually catch on. But I love that CD too. Now Human the Death Dance...I hate to say it but I am not feeling this one. Every cd is totally different from the last one. Which is not a bad thing but this cd is really out there and is nothing even close to the intial Sage I heard that made me a life ling fan (The Sick Series). If you have never heard any of those CDS please find a way to check those out...great great stuff. My favorite track on this cd is Keep Moving that song is the best on this cd. When the next cd comes out I will get that one too. I buy the CDs of people I really like and regardless of what I think of this cd I bought and will keep it.

Perhaps my hopes were just set too high. After a dissapointing Healthy Distrust album I was ready for Sage to come back and reel me into his world again. It is hard to be critical about something that someone obviously put his heart into but i was unable to find myself being "caught" by this album like i have been with so much of his past work. While it is definatly leaps and bounds above A Healthy Distrust, this album is no where near as good as Personal Journals or any of his ..Sick albums
Sage's Best Album - .......2007-05-26
Before I got this album, I had only heard about 8 songs of his from several years ago (Majority Rule, Hey Bobby, etc.). I thought that his stuff was great, but like my expectations of a lot of independent artists, I thought that it was probably just a fluke. You know, the artist fades into obscurity, never advancing.
Well, Sage proved me wrong on this one. He's advancing by leaps and bounds.
This album, Human Death Dance, brought back everything I learned to love about hip hop: Braking the mold, Love of fresh word & rhyme, beats and music that make you realize what you are hearing is totally new.
It starts off with a cool little montage of old recordings he had of himself rapping when he was a kid - then the next track "Underground for Dummies" is a summary of his experiences starting out, his naivete as his strength, managers, etc... his influences (very cool). The background music sounds like nostalgic memories (hints of 80's pop music?) with the end result being a sound in hiphop I've never heard before. It's timeless and an instant classic.
I could go on for every song on this album ("Clickety Clack" blew me away!) but I recommend you get this album, open the lyrics book that comes with it, strap on your headphones, and enjoy the ride.
It's one of those albums that will remind of you of this summer, years into the future.

Maybe it was that downtime at Creedmoor Mental Hospital, but after he tuned out following the breakup of the hardheaded seminal hip-hop group the Ultramagnetic MCs, something must have flipped Kool Keith's wig like a mescaline pizza. I can think of no other way to explain the mutant birth of Dr. Octagonecologyst. Literally assuming another personality on this record, Dr. Octagon--Kool Keith on the mike, with Dan "The Automater" Nakamura producing--transmits unearthly rhymes like tractor beams to your cranium. Then he squirms around in there, grabs some Vaseline from your medicine cabinet, and does a little dance. The first time you listen to cuts like "Earth People" and "Blue Flowers," you might have to change the way you listen to hip-hop. The standards are the same--verse, chorus, verse, with plenty of nasty skits in the middle--and there are electro-beat shades of his predecessors, such as Afrika Baambaata, but the wordplay and beat compositions are truly light years from most hip-hop. Listening to this album is like trying to read the glyphs from Stargate. --Todd LevinCustomer Reviews:

What is there to say that hasn't already been said?.......2006-10-18
There isn't a moment on this album that Keith, under his Dr. Octagon alias, is even close to being sane; the stuff he spits is so outrageous, and so absurd, that even if you lived your life as a continuous acid trip, this album would still fly over your head like the UFOs Keith's so obsessed with. When he does the chorus to "Earth's People," spitting "Earth's people, New York and California, earth's people, I was born on Jupiter," he'll literally leave you scratching your temple for days on end, pondering what the heck he just said.
Yet he's so dope on the microphone, it doesn't matter. Track after track, he comes correct with tight, albeit off-beat flows, with intricate rhymes about the most random of things. On No Awareness, he opens the song with "Your organic medical talk propels off my arms, the atom bomb final Lionel Richie not couth for this battle. I battle sing-sing-sing like bing-bing-bing," and understanding that is next to impossible. Sometimes Keith doesn't even bother to rhyme, yet his flow will have you thinking otherwise, as he never loses it throughout this release.
The production is absolutely phenomenal. Dan The Automator is clearly one of the best behind the boards, and doesn't get the proper credit he deserves in most hip-hop circles. The production is eery, and the science-fiction influences are heavy; much like Keith's rhymes themselves. There is not a single bad piece of music on this album, from either the emcee or his producer; creating a masterpiece which, unfortunately for Keith, greatly overshadows his enormous catalogue.
While Keith may've disowned the Dr. Octagon alias due to this album's success, and not attracting the audience he'd wanted, that doesn't change the fact that this as original an album as you'll find in any form of music. Recommended to any hip-hop head with an open mind.
Some Earth People Will Feel Alienated..........2006-07-19
Dr. Octagon is a groundbreaking release that is best enjoyed after countless listens. The best records are the ones you have to go back over and decipher new meanings. Never one to waste a rhyme, Keith opens up with "3000" on some bugged out wordplay, "Channels and handles Automator's on the panels/ turnin knobs you slobs suckers like Baskin Robs/carvel don't tell your whole crew is ice cream fudge/rappers that budge makin moves step in grooves/and ride the pace like at thirty-three dark shades/ now you seein me/ rap moves on to the year three thousand". Just a few bars of his breathless liners doesn't do the space alien gynocologist much justice. You could spend your whole summer vacation trying to get a grasp on these otherworldly phrases.
Even with the off the wall lyricism, the album wouldn't be the nearly enjoyable experience if it wasn't for Dan Automators genius turntable techniques and sci-fi horror backdrops. Just peep "Halfsharkhalfalligatorman" (long winded title!) and the incredible "Blue Flowers" for proof! The album is just filled with surprises at every corner. However, no other song on Dr. Octagon captivated me more than "Girl, Let Me Touch You". To this day, it stands as one of my personal all-time favorite non-singles on any hip hop record. Automators production is effortlessly hypnotic, Keith's persona is as abstact as ever, and no matter what mood I was in...the song would just set things straight.
In conclusion, Dr. Octagon is a stone cold classic. I don't care how many non-believers this record sparked. So what if he's different. His individuality separates Keith from the rest. How many emcees have the ability to go as far to credit "Kelly Wootang" on drums and "Curt Kobane" on vocals (you should be buggin' out with those references). Besides, too many hip hop records take themselves way too seriously with yet far too many more gimmicks. Kool Keith doesn't care. He wouldn't take sides, regarding the Tupac Biggie beef. He would rather diss both of them and be done with it (Pluckin' Cards ring a bell)? Keith would put out some good material after this, but after "Sex Styles", there was far too much B.S. Hell, even DJ Shadow got in on one cut and this was the same year he put out the timeless, "Endtroducin'". Grab this record anyway you can before it criminally goes out of print.

Ali "Dubfire" Shirazinia answers Deep Dish co-conspirator Sharam's recent solo Global Underground release (GU29: Dubai) with one of his own: Taipei. The journey starts with a mellow house vibe that has both atmospherics and funk in plentiful supply. Francois Dubois's "I Try" greets the listener with a shimmering organ line, Myself's "Barbeque" gives an idea of what it might be like to hear a ghost talking through a vocoder, and the lilting string section of Julien Jabre's "Swimming Places" will melt the ice in your drink. The direction changes with the molten electro of Booka Shade's "White Rooms," and from there it's off to the races. Disc 2 hits the ground running, as the industrial menace of Nitzer Ebb's "Control I'm Here"--which comes off as even creepier than the original--sets the stage for an unforgiving trip through the darker provinces of dance music. While a number of tracks such as Nic Fanciulli's "Lucky Heather" are inescapably engaging, others, like Robbie Rivera's "Float Away" (with its barely passable lyrics) don't fare as well. Taken as a whole, Dubfire fans will be happy that the DJ has pulled no punches, though it's likely that listeners who love the first disc will find the second a little punishing for their taste. Perhaps this is the price of eclecticism. --Brent KallmerCustomer Reviews:
The Darker Half.......2007-07-15
I think it safe to say that Dubfire has always been considered the darker half of Deep Dish. It was very predictable that he would compile an album that so sharply contrasts Sharam's GU029:Dubai.
The first half of disc 1, however, did take me by surprise with its lighter and dreamier sound. I expected darkness all the way. Initially, I was excited because it felt as if Dubfire was going to take the listener on one of those O-so-rare musical journeys that only a few DJ's truely know how to do on a commerical compilation. I felt completely cheated when track 8 ("Hustler" by Simian Mobile Disco) hit. For me, that was the beginning of the end of the ride that I was so thoroughly enjoying. The remaining tracks are alright, and I do like the actually music of Dubfire's own "I Feel Speed [Club Mix]", but the lyrics are really lame. Anyone else think of "My White Bicycle" by Nazarath?!
Disc 2 is a complete roller-coaster ride for me when it comes to Dubfire's track selection. Love some and hate just as many. After a couple of weak opening tracks, the set hits one of its highlights with the "Sax Track". The others being "You" by Ithica and the closer track, Paul Kalkbrenner's excellent re-mix of "Jet". I frequently lose interest in the set with many of the other tracks between these.
Personally, I think Dubfire needs to phase out his need to include a little Depeche Mode into every set his mixes. If you have ever heard this guy spin solo live, you'll know what I mean! Also, re-mixes can occasionally make great improvements and/or revitalize the originals, but to include 6 re-mixes out of 14 tracks as on disc 2 was pretty dissapointing for me.
Disc 1 gets 4/5 and Disc 2, 3.5/5 stars.
This cd totally ROCKS IT!!!.......2007-07-04
Outstanding!!.......2007-06-04
As always I suggest getting the Limited Edition Long Box. I personally like CD 1 over CD 2. CD 1 has some outstanding tracks such as Sun Is Rising. Cd2 has My MTV which is nice. I can imagine most people will spend more time listening to CD1 than Cd2.
Overall I think this is a great buy and one will not be dissapointed. With this release Dubfire has set a higher standard for Deepdish which Deepdish will have to match in their future releases. For those looking for comparisons, if I had to vote with my money between GU 31 and GU 29, I'd probably pick GU 31. But then again they sound like two very different genres, so not sure how meaningfull or fair the comparison is.
Enjoy GU 31!!
An amazing release by Dubfire.......2007-05-28
CD1 sounded like trance mixed with house, which Dubfire pulled off beautifully, then CD2 finished off with pure house beat.
Oddly, I even find the tunes on this CD better than his GU31 tour.

Following their success with 2005's George Is On, house duo Deep Dish (known individually as Sharam and Dubfire) set out to divide and conquer with individual mixes for UK label Global Underground. Sharam strikes first--and hard--with Dubai, a two-disc set that is likely to generate comparisons with GU's other epic releases such as Sasha's Ibiza (GU13). Disc one is the slow-burner here: Spider and Legaz's dub of "Look Around" funks things up with a vocoder-drenched synth line that could have been pulled off a Jeff Beck album before giving way to the druggy, cascading echoes of 16 Bit Lolitas' "Passing Lights." From the perspective of the second disc, the moody expanse of the first begins to look a lot like an elaborate launch sequence, as the infectious "Timewarp" merges into Cedric Gervais's "Spirit in My Life," which sends the whole business into orbit. Sharam has undoubtedly reached a new high here, with programming so organic it sometimes seems like the track list may have just dropped out of the sky. For those awaiting the next big Global Underground release, your time has come. --Brent KallmerCustomer Reviews:

Best GU Release since Deep Dish Toronto!!!.......2007-05-10
Personally, I've been disappointed with GU releases for a few years now. I have found several of the latest releases to be boring and hard to listen to. I'm sorry people, but if an electronica comp doesn't make you want to bob your head or move your feet to the beat...then it's not doing its job! And, I haven't found that to be the case with a GU release since Deep Dish Toronto, Digweed LA, and Warren Amsterdam. I was worried that GU had lost its way for good!
But, not anymore! This album has restored my faith in The Global Underground!

Nothing Special About This Solo Effort For Sharam.......2007-03-01
However, I'll be the first to admit that I like the dynamics that came from the duo Deep Dish. Dubfire's darker style and his preference for progressive house was a good balance when coupled with Sharam's ligher style and preference for house and vocal tracks.
This two disc set is heavily laddened with vocal tracks (with the male vocalists all closely sounding to long-time friend and previously featured vocalist, Morel). Firstly, It would have been nice to have a little more non-vocal progressive house tracks to balance out the album. Secondly, and more importantly, Sharam's track selection is fairly dire.
If you are a trance-head and hate house music then don't buy the album. If you are looking for an album as good as GU025:Toronto (like I was), more than likely you'll be disappointed. Others love it. Personally, I consider 5/13 tracks on disc 1, and 4/14 tracks on disc 2 to be above average (none of them are stellar) with the remainder being very mediocre. Can't consider this effort a success for Sharam.
Both Discs 1 and 2 get 3/5 stars. Let's hope Dubfire's upcoming GU release is a little more impressive.

Who but Nick Warren could be tapped for Global Underground's landmark 30th release, a journey through downtempo trippiness, silky minimalism, and sparkly house, set against the backdrop of the City of Light? After all, the Bristol spinner had already been at the controls for no fewer than six GU releases, and his last outing (GU28: Shanghai) blew the doors off most everything else released in the genre that year. On Paris, he returns to the haunting, spaced-out soundscapes that made his Reykjavik mix (GU24) a series favorite. The first disc goes downtempo; the backward melodies and marching psychedelia of Tripswitch's "Strange Parallels" make the case that the album should come with a drug interaction warning, while Joey Fehrenbach's "Being Around You" hypnotizes with a synth line that tumbles through the stereo spectrum like a waterfall in slow motion. Disc 2 gallops from the gate to the glacial sighs of August's "I Miss" and the eerie vocals of Blue Fountain's "Sweep" that chant "I'm your sorrow...I'm your shadow." Later on, Oliver Moldan and Isma Ae's "Fivefivezero" pounces on the unsuspecting with a relentless, pulsating lead and Eelke Kleijn's "8 Bit Era Dub" swings harder than a prizefighter. On display through it all is Warren's affinity for pulling the truly innovative and strangely compelling tunes from the ocean of often derivative electronic dance music, leading one to believe that if there are vinyl shops in alternate dimensions, he has likely rooted through their crates. Like his other GU releases, Warren's Paris begins to reveal its secrets only after a number of listens--but fans of this DJ's DJ would have it no other way. --Brent KallmerCustomer Reviews:
It is NOT Shanghai.......2007-06-17
GU Paris.....Is it really?.......2007-05-12
Anyhow, back to my quibble; I wonder if the boys at "globalunderground" still TRULY REFLECT the vibe, feel and flavor of their gigs in the many different cities around the world. What I mean is that Nick could not have started his Paris performance with 70 min. of chill (no matter how good the tracks were); this just doesn't happen in real life. At one time there used to be a sentence in GU sleevenotes that states "Each of the tracks on this CD has been selected by the DJ himself to give a retrospective view of his recent sets in xyz city" and I believed it, but not anymore. It is now released as a night in a certain city at a certain venue but with full focus on commercial objectives; henceforth, chill tracks you would never hear being played in front of a massive crowd waiting to get high on life and dance to a frenzy.
I have no problem with that actually, good music is never bad. And GU 30 is good music. But I have my suspicions about it being a true reflection of what happened in Paris.

Mr Warren's Opus.......2007-04-28
I had to stop my MP3 player 15 minutes into listening to this album for the first time. Why? Well, I had accidently started disc 2 and was a little off my norm at the time! It was too much...too good...too powerful...too...well you get my point. So...a few days later with my full attention span intact, I gave it another go. I don't think I have ever felt so much euphoria while listening to music since disc 2 of Global Underground 24:7 by Danny Howells. Sorry to sound so melodramatic but I'm being honest.
Again I started with disc 2. The set is so incredible. Tracks loaded with overlapping and intricate sounds, melodies and harmonies...but also simple and minimalistic in essence. There are so many subtle peaks on a background that never truly dips too low. No buildups or crescendos are clearly discernable after "I Miss" and "Sweep" (tracks 1&2). By "Cosmopolitan Drink" (track 3) your feet will no longer touch the ground until the end of the disc.
This may seem a little boring to a lot of progressive house and trance fans. Especially those who solely live for the much loved crescendo-decrecedos heard on many live and commercial electronica sets. A quick warning to those listeners that consider GU008:Brazil to be Warren's best Global Underground release. This album hits the other end of the electronica spectrum for Warren. Sorry, but those days are predominantly gone for him. Since 2003, and the timely release of GU024:Reykjavic, Warren embraced the art of being a DJ...no longer did he concentrate on putting out thumping compilations and hard techo driven sets to please the chemically driven dancers on his dancefloors. No, since 2003 he has become a fourth dimension bus driver and is more than happy to bring anyone with an open mind along for the ride. Hop on for this one.
Disc 1 was listened to immediately after disc 2. I'm actually glad that I ended up listening to the discs in this sequence. I needed my emotions to mellow out a bit. I needed to be brought back from Warren's bus trip! Disc 1 was exactly what I needed. It has this eerie, calming affect. Much needed after listening to disc 2. The track selection on disc 1 is by no means dull and uninspiring...just gentle, soulful, and of course...brilliant!
I continully need to justify why I listen to and love electronica to the majority of my friends. I'm also defending the true DJ frequently. No, they are not just guys and girls who play records and CDs. At least not the true masters who clearly separate themselves from the amateurs. The true masters of electronica should include the (highly underpraised) creators of the music itself, and those few DJ's that can string together multiple (and carefully) selected tracks into a seamless set. The overall goal of these DJ's is not to mix a bunch of different tracks into one big and lengthly supertrack. Their goal is to create an unique experience or journey for the listener to embark on.
These DJ's are very rare...Nick Warren is one...without a doubt. GU030: Paris is his opus.
Both discs easily score 5/5 stars from this reviewer.
It is truely a shame that this production is going to be his last for the Global Underground label. His last three GU releases have been truly special.

Definitely different, but just plain (throwback word) RAD........2007-07-31
I haven't heard anything from Adam Freeland before this but I will definitely check out more of his stuff now. I think the negative reviews are from people who are disappointed that this album is a 180 from the norm, but if you know not to expect the norm, then get ready for a great experience! This probably should have been released under something other than the "Global Underground" series, like a NU-Breed or something, but the GU people must have wanted to get this guy some exposure, and rightfully so.
Again, different than your usual GU, but one that must be heard, just know what to expect.
"Nothing but Noise"........People listen to the CD!!!! Its a GREAT Mix .......2007-07-12
a refreshing departure from GU's excellent progressive pedigree.......2007-07-10
"This is noisy and awful! I've been a fan of GU ever since the series existed and this is nothing like what they play!"
Yea okay. If this was a Seaman release--or Digweed--then sure, be angry. It would be a complete disaster of sound. You got hooked by the expectation of heavily layered, ethereal progressive house and got edgy, punchy electronica. Complain--people will listen.
But if you have been following Adam Freeland around, or electronic music in general for that matter, you'd know that he's not a progressive house DJ. In fact, he isn't even a house DJ. Known for his blistering breaks and genre-defying sets, Adam has slowly progressed (pardon the pun) towards the French and Australian labels (Ed Banger and Modular come to mind), pushing the boundary between house, electronica, and rock.
To me, the combination is sublime. I love every minute of this release (I'll give the other reviewer some slack since the revl9n track IS a bit weird). If you like artists like SebastiAn, Busy P, Digitalism, The Bagraiders, Ajax, and other "new electro" stars, then pick up this album. If you are a diehard fan of groovy, deep progressive house, then this album shouldn't have even attracted you in the first place.
A real dancer in my book.

Album Description
The debut album from Cut Chemist, formerly of pioneering underground hip-hop group Jurassic 5, The Audience's Listening is evocative of an era when sound enthusiasts put out records for the adventure of it, not as a vehicle tied to hit singles and booty-shaking videos. Using a turntable, mixer and computer to create the songs, this gifted DJ has conjured an homage to what is possible. Varied, uplifting and unexpected, rooted in hip-hop but leaping into new sonic territory, The Audience's Listening offers musical magic created by the alchemist known as Cut Chemist.Customer Reviews:
Intelligent album!.......2007-07-03
FINALLY the DJ actually said who the artist was, and I bought the album immediately! This was a good decision on my part!
It is an intellegent composition, one that will not yield hits on the radio, but is brilliantly crafted. It requires actually listening to it several times to get into it, but the "effort" is worth it! And you won't get sick of hearing it on the radio every hour like so many albums!
If you have any interest at all in DJ compositions, this one is a must have!
fine turntablism.......2006-11-22
let me tell you, i first heard this album performed live by the cut chemist himself. and it got me shakin', same with the whole audience. so if u get a chance to, go see it live... it was awsome.
so therefore i decided to pick up the album on vinyl and compact disc.
its a good album, especially if u like a mix of hip hop, funk and jazz. Djs should respect it because the turntablism aspect of the album is up to par, nothing new or totaly mind blowing, but creative nontheless. if this is your first album listening to cut chemist, its a good one, and i think even for the cut chemist fans, its apreciable work. its fun, creative, and gets you moving. i thought however there lacked a bit of energy from the MC on the track 'whats the altitude' on the CD. however, live, he rocked it.
its a short album, but its fun, and its short enough not to be too redundant, long enough to enjoy.
get a copy, its not a let down... if youre looking for something completely mind blowing, maybe this isnt your pick, but thats why i didnt put five stars. fine album all the way through.
The robots... are coming..........2006-08-28
Cut Chemist's "The Audience's Listening" appears to be one of the third category, though the turntablist/DJ/Jurassic 5-er does give electronica and hip-hop some novel twists in his first fully original album. But at the heart of it, it sounds like Chemist is simply dabbling in whatever he enjoys most.
"Start remembering what you hear," says a cheerful interviewer, before a patchwork of samples inform us about the DJs of the future, about music, the first annual DJ convention, and a lot of dogs barking. By the time you're finished with the intro, your brain will be in the right state for what comes next. ("People get ready... the robots are coming!")
He retreads familiar ground in the energetic percussion-heavy "My 1st Big Break," before switching over to a new sound -- bossa nova. Gypsyish guitar playing an energetic live tune, with a sample of Astrud Gilberto playing softly halfway through. It's an exquisite, ethereal tune that shows that Cut Chemist can do all sorts of music.
Lest anyone think that Cut Chemist has lost his edge, he dabbles in some truly weird stuff (a phone conversation done entirely with samples and scratches), sharply surreal hip-hop, and shimmering electronic numbers that sound like an arty sci-fi film. Cut Chemist dips back into bossa nova once before, before finishing up with the dense, catchy hip-hop of "The Audience Is Listening Theme Song."
Cut Chemist has done some pretty brilliant work with remixes and the "Brainfreeze" collaboration with DJ Shadow, so expectations were high for "The Audience's Listening." But the best way to listen is without expectations -- while it's neither groundbreaking nor brilliant, it is a beautiful, funky little album.
One thing it has from the beginning is a relaxed, laid-back feeling feeling. Cut Chemist shows that he can do everything from spare acoustics to dense, intense melodies, dabbling in a little of everything at least twice, and trying new sounds without trying anything too new.
It's not groundbreaking, but from the sound of it, Cut Chemist was just trying out whatever existing sounds he liked rather than striving for something new. The basic melodies are loaded with extra sound: lots of vinyl scratches, odd samples (glass breaking? dogs?), razor-sharp hip-hop beats, and everything from a cowbell to gypsyish guitar to waves of smooth synth.
Hymnal and Thes One make rather surreal cameos on a pair of songs, while Edan and Mr. Lif appear on the frenetic hip-hop "Storm," blurting out a breathless rap that gets stranger with every word.
Cut Chemist may not have broken new ground with "The Audience's Listening," but the result is still a fun, weird, and thoroughly likable album. Definitely worth a listen.
