DG has put together a fascinating compilation of Segovia's art that reminds us what a protean figure he was. Segovia single-handedly put the instrument on the map by making classical guitar concerts popular events, broadening the instrument's repertory through commissions and transcriptions, and convincing even doubters that it could be a vehicle for serious music. He's heard here in brief pieces recorded between 1952 and 1969. Even in those made when he was well into his 70s, his fingers remain nimble and interpretations lively. Listening straight through, one hears many all-time Segovia favorites as Turina's Sevillana and Albeniz's Asturias and Zambra Granadina and renews appreciation for path-breaking composers like Castelnuovo-Tedesco. He wrote extensively for Segovia and his Capriccio diabolico and Tonadilla are pieces of real substance. Disc two is largely made up transcriptions and it's amazing how well so many of them work on the guitar, at least under Segovia's magic fingers. Thus the transformations of Bach's violin music and even a Chopin Prelude sound idiomatic, and the gorgeous melodies of the Canzonetta from Mendelssohn's Op. 12 String Quartet are irresistible here. An entrancing set. --Dan DavisCustomer Reviews:
A Man and His Art - Magnificently Captured.......2007-04-06
There are a total of 31 pieces played on these CDs and while a playlist would be an unnecessary use of space here, a list of the composers represented is not. More than the specific pieces Segovia gives us here, the range of composers chosen by the compilers and editors - with each piece rearranged by Segovia himself, tells us a great deal about his interests, talents and musical range. These composers include:
Isaac Albeniz, Johann Sebastian Bach, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Frederic Chopin, Claude Debussy, John Dowland, Manuel de Falla, Cesar Franke, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Edvard Grieg, George Frederic Handel, Felix Mendelsohn, Frederico Moreno Torroba, Modest Mussorgsky, Nicolo Paganini, Felipe Pedrell, Manuel Ponce, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Joaquin Rodrigo, Albert Roussel, Domenico Scarlatti, Alexander Scriabin, Segovia's own composition of Estudio sin luz, Fernando Sor, Francisco Tarrega, Joaquin Turina and Heitor Villa-Lobos. A truly magnificent and broad ranging collection held together by Segovia's unique personal style, approach and sound.
Largely self-taught, Andres Segovia did things with a guitar that others only imagined. He didn't just play Bach, for example - music written for an entirely different type of instrument (keyboards.) He went a step further, and recorder Bach's keyboard lessons written for his students (the Two and Three Part Inventions) and made them sound as if they had been written for the guitar! His artistry is evident to even the casual listener and in this collection, any devote of classical guitar and/or of Segovia as an individual artist, will not be disappointed.
Perfect listening for anytime. Hypnotic and, simply, unsurpassed. A necessary addition to any serious classical guitar collection.

One of the one hundred recordings in any age.......2005-04-26
This Chaconne performing maintains the perfect balance between the mistery and the elusiveness, in fact Benedetti gradually increases the tension level to unexpected heights. I got the Busoni version with this piece and Michelangeli gets very very close in idiomatic expresiveness.
The Carnaval was his glorious triumph in the famous London Recital in 1957. He recorded it several times. And recently I got a new perfomance recorded in Lugano where he makes with this work an absolute journey to the purest romatic tradition and far beyond.
Finally the Paganini Variations was another battlehorse for this legendary pianist. Benedetti remarks the dark side of the score with notable wisdom, and accents as anyone else the charming and rapture lyrical mood that Brahms knew to use so well. It's very difficult to play any Brahms variation due you must be inmersed in the real intention of every variation.
This Remastered album is a reference must for any serious collector item of refined taste and sensibility.
An authentic file tresure!

Lute Music for Witches and Alchemists / Lutz Kirchhof
Anthony Holborne Manufacturer: Sony ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD Similar Items:
ASIN: B00004S38O Release Date: 2000-03-21 |
Amazon.com
The mellow German lutenist Lutz Kirchhof advises listeners not to turn the volume up too high on his latest Sony solo disc. The delicate lute tone charmed 16th- and 17th-century listeners by its simple acoustic beauty. The gentle plucked notes could affect the mood, altering one's emotional state. Kirchhof suggests that such potential made music invaluable to witches and alchemists, who were held in high regard in the irrational centuries before the Age of Enlightenment. This theory enables Kirchhof to make an eclectic selection of 30 short pieces covering 200 years and four different lutes--renaissance lute, vihuela, baroque lute, and theorbo. He does not claim that any of the items were actually put to any alchemical or satanic use, but he does not need to. The Presto and Galanterie by S. L. Weiss speak for themselves. Dufaut's Suite in A minor might not otherwise have reached the public; Hagen's Sonata in C minor would have remained obscure; and Holborne's The Fairy Round Galliard waited in vain for the revival of alchemy as a science. An eccentric disc all-round. --Rick JonesCustomer Reviews:
Ahah! I found you, my precious!!.......2006-07-27
That is truly within the realm of Herr/Herra Parent to educate the child that there is quite a universe of music that is out there.
The reason I call this 'My Precious', is that I had lost a lot in Hurricane Katrina, including my music library, which i am still slowly rebuilding, thank the Goddess!!
I owned this CD when it became released, and found it to be a collection of music that is most suited for comtemplative study, note-taking, journalling, writing memoirs with tea/coffee/mead/or aperitif. For me, it is also good music to use when busy scripting in my book-of-shadows, or rhyming wordings to be used later for some good works, by tensor light if not by candle.
As one who has self-taught guitar and medieval instruments, i appreciate the talent behind, and the hard work to play this collection.
I will place this among my 'workings' collection, once i receive it ... although not quick enough!
Nothing bad, nothing special........2003-06-11
While this disc might be attractive to newcomers to the lute and its magical attractions, I am sure that most who are familiar with the skills and taste of the other aforementioned artists will know that plenty of the music on this disc can be found, sounding better, elsewhere.
There's nothing bad about this disc, but nothing special, either.

Better at Italian than English.......2003-07-25
The Italian pieces are presentable, enjoyable, and sung with delicacy and a fine sense of the artifice of the Italian madrigal. Although this recording can be moving, these pieces are performed more with reverence than with love. These are well worth hearing, but the French ensembles sing these with a bit more feeling. Try, say, Ensemble Clément Janequin.

Customer Reviews:
Stylish and perfectly historically aware performances in gorgeous sound.......2005-07-13
There was a period when performances of Renaissance works performed on instruments or with instrumental doubling of vocal parts came to be frowed upon in preference to a capella performances. Around the time this recording was released things had come full circle and both approaches came to be embraced. Erik van Nevel is clearly a scholar fully aware of the latest thoughts in these matters and the listener can rest assured that in matters of performance practice he knows perfectly well what he is doing. The suggestions of ignorance from the previous reviewer should be turned instead on the reviewer himself.
Recordings by Erik van Nevel tend to be terribly difficult to get a hold of, even though he is as good as or better than many of other better known performers in the field of Renaissance polyphony. So this recording should be heartily welcomed by all lovers of Renaissance music. The selection of music here is all wonderfully chosen to illustrate the musical tendencies amongst Lassus' contemporaries, although the much earlier composers Févan, Dufay and Ciconia also make something of a surprise appearance too. So even the slightly hodge podge anthological nature of the CD fails to detract from the fact that most of these works are otherwise unobtainable and above all immensely rewarding to listen to. Particularly noteworthy are the 'Respice in me' by Rogier, the Gombert 'Ave maria' and the de Monte 'Bona est oratio cum ieiunio' just to name a couple of works.
Given that van Nevel's performances can be quite revelatory, he really does deserve to be recorded much more often than he is. And when he has been recorded it has always been in boxy limited sound, so the spectacular audiophile recording he receives here is an embarrassment of riches. A DSD processing system was used along with the usual expertise of the Telarc recording team. The sound-staging is stunning, with wonderful detail, and the typical DSD refinements in sound. It is like taking the cotton wool out of your ears. This may be the most sumptuously recorded Renaissance music CD available today.
Ivan Moody on Goldberg early music magazine had this to say:
"This is a brilliantly accomplished recording in which a smaller group of players from I Fiamminghi shows a real grasp of the idiom of this repertoire. Currende sing with passion and conviction, and are not afraid to allow the darker, meditative aspect of much of this music come out (try Clemens's Ave Maria, for example, or de Monte's Bona est oratio cum ieiunio, for example, where the long-breathed lines of this penitential work are really shaped so that the ensuing harmonic flow seems effortless). I Fiamminghi impress by their slick rhythmic phrasing, their unanimity and their smoothness of sound: the sensation on hearing the very first chord of the first track (an instrumental rendition of Lassus' Passan vostri triomphi) is that one has walked into a velvet cathedral of sound."
Telarc - please can we have more!
A question of "arrangements" but very good otherwise.......2000-06-20
Although the liner notes are silent on this point, the press release quotes conductor Rudolf Werthen thus: "It is interesting when music of the 'past' is performed in a 'contemporary' way.... The alternation of our arrangement with works in their original form...provides the audience with a deeper perception of the compositions that form much European music." I leave it to my betters to determine how "contemporary" treatment of Renaissance music "works" in this context; but it might give a pause to any teacher wishing to use this CD as an educational tool. For myself, I find it very pleasant if somewhat over-consistently serious.

Album Description
This newly remastered reissue marks a welcome return to the catalog of the first volume of the classic 4-CD collection that was formerly available on the CRI label. The works recorded on this disc span the first six years of what Harry Partch (1901-1974), slightly tongue-in-cheek, called the "third period" of his creative life. They show him moving away from the obsession with "the intrinsic music of spoken words" that had characterized his earlier output (the vocal works of 1930-33 and 1941-45) and towards an instrumental idiom, predominantly percussive in nature. This path was to take him through the "music-dance drama" King Oedipus (1951)-the culmination of his "spoken word" mannerto the "dance satire" The Bewitched (1954-55), in which his new percussive idiom manifests itself. The three works on this disc show Partch before, during, and after this period of transition. In their quiet, forlorn way, the Eleven Intrusions are among the most compelling and beautiful of Partch's works. The individual pieces were composed at various times between August 1949 and December 1950, and only later gathered together as a cycle. Nonetheless they form a unified whole, with a nucleus of eight songs framed by two instrumental preludes and an essentially instrumental postlude. Although foreshadowed by the dance sequences of King Oedipus, the Plectra and Percussion Dances (1952) are the first of Partch's major works to be wholly instrumental in conception. They stand in relation to Oedipus as a satyr play in relation to a Greek tragedyhence the work's subtitle, "Satyr-Play Music for Dance Theater." He felt that after the prolonged period of composition and production of Oedipus it was "almost a necessity to give vent to feelings and ideas, whims and caprices, even nonsense, that seem to have no place in tragedy." The final work on this disc is Ulysses at the Edge, written at Partch's studio at Gate 5 in July 1955. Ulysses, which Partch describes as a "minor adventure in rhythm," is unique among his mature compositions in that, in its original form, it did not call for any of his own instruments. The version recorded here, for alto and baritone saxophones, Diamond Marimba, Boo, Cloud-Chamber Bowls, and speaking voice, is considered the third version of the piece.Customer Reviews:
Now it's possible to get your Partch all in a row.......2006-02-20

Too Much Fluff for one CD!.......2006-07-01
The "Shindig" has two slow movements which are reasonably original and worth hearing again. Unfortunately, the other movements are like a cross of the populist Copland, Grofe (On The Trail from Grand Canyon Suite)and Bernstein, and ultimately sound very much alike with almost no textural variety. The "pseudo Hoe-Down" figures Gillis constantly uses sound like "circus music" and are totally unconvincing.
The Symphony 5 and one half (for Fun) features several brief movements which are about as symphonic as Madonna. Rather, they are hackneyed bits of Americana which have been handled with more assurance elsewhere. As for the Symphony #10, it too is not a real symphony, just brief vignettes feebly developed. The slow movement requiem for a hero is probably the best, but sounds too much like the slow movement of the 5th symphony, right down to the exact same string figures. The net result of hearing all this dross on one CD is boredom to the extreme. A real pity, because the recording and performances are of extreme high quality. 5 stars for the recording and performance, 0 stars for the music!!

Don Gillis: Remembering Mid-America at Mid-Century.......2001-11-03
This oft-overlooked American composer obviously loved our land. His highly evocative creations brilliantly capture the rhythms, vistas, and humanity of everyday life west of the Mississippi. It's all here: The street bustle, the solemnitude, the honkey-tonk, the steam locomotive, the wayfarer on the plains at sunset ... or at least that's what I heard.
The vote for showstopper goes to "Symphony 5 1/2", one of the finest light classics written in the 20th Century. "Encore Concerto", which Gillis shelved after a single performance, rivals the best of Morton Gould's work, especially in the Second Movement (Listen closely as Gillis takes Bartok out for a spin in the Third.)
These richly textured, difficult to play pieces are executed with a beautiful combination of verve, syncopation, tenderness and frivolity by the Albany Symphony Orchestra under the direction of David Alan Miller. I had never before heard the Albany Symphony; but I now have the highest respect for its artistic capabilities. It's obvious Maestro Miller has a real affinity for this music.
If you want to remember what America was -- and know what it still is at heart -- snatch up this CD before it's gone. It's glorious.
Great American Music.......2001-06-06
Don Gillis, a forgotten American composer who composed for the radio and the NBC Radio Orchestra, wrote thrilling music for audiences in the early 20th Century, a type of grand music that John Williams has reinvigorated in movies (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Superman, The Cowboys). Gillis' music sounds American (nearly "Old West" or Bonanza sounding) through his extensive use of brass, especially great horn licks and trumpet calls, syncopated percussion, including great timpani lines, as well as flourishes of woodwinds and strings. Harmonies include a lot of open fifths and a technique I call the telegraph theme, where trumpets, high winds, or high strings quickly repeat a note over accompanying brass and percussion, giving an impression of Americana.
While his music might be considered a bit trite, he displays great musicality and virtuosity in some very difficult music to perform. This recording includes two symphonies, a short ballet, and a fabulous piano concerto with jazz and folk influences recalling Gershwin, all totaling over 70 minutes of music. Plus it is truly very exciting music.
In addition, the Albany symphony plays this sometimes difficult music with great ease, great sound, and great excitement. The brass is flashy and pull off licks with no difficulty, woodwinds and strings give equally fine performances. Insightful liner notes and remarkable digital sound, I can not say enough of this recording and this unknown American composer.
