I am very impressed with this recording. I bought it because I am playing in the orchestra for this opera and have thoroghly enjoyed this rendition.

A Delightful Budget Gianni Schicchi.......2004-03-28

There is something about Puccini's little comic masterpiece that makes it almost failure-proof. I've seen a number of productions that didn't seem to have much going for them in terms of cast, production and orchestra, and yet the opera always comes off. Even so, I didn't have very high expectations for this recording when it came my way; after all, I'd never heard of any of the singers, had only a nodding aquaintance with the conductor, and it came from an obscure corner of Europe. I needn't have been apprehensive. This recording is really quite good, and indeed has some quite wonderful performances, especially in the Schicchi of Alberto Rinaldi and the Lauretta of Tatiana Lipsic (who does, after all, have the one 'hit' number of the piece, 'O mio babbino caro'). But, in fact, this ensemble piece is well served by the cast here assembled. It is conducted with verve by Alexander Rahbari and the orchestra is the Málaga Philharmonic which is much more than adequate, somewhat surprising considering that I'd never thought of Málaga as being anything more than a nice little city on the Costa del Sol and the source of that sweet wine bearing its name. Even on the recording - without the help of visuals - the sly comedy comes off, the romantic moments between Rinuccio (who has the only other aria even half-well-known, 'Firenze è come un albero fiorito') and Lauretta are ardently and sweetly done. Rinuccio is well-sung by tenor Stefano Secco, who has a lyric tenor with more than a little heft in the voice. He could well be a comer. Soprano Lipsic definitely is.

All in all, then, this 'Schicchi' has real artistic value and you get more than your money's worth at Naxos's ridiculously low price.

I first heard Javier Garcia on Putumayo Presents: Radio Latino. I was so impressed with 'Me Gustaria' I had to buy Garcia's CD immediately. His songs are so catchy and upbeat, they make you want to dance! When I first got this CD, I listened to it 4 times! Buy this, you will really love it!

I've had this CD for a couple of months and it just gets better with each listen. The lyrics are sometimes insightful, always heartfelt, and the music, the music is a very personal but seamless blend of all sorts of African diaspora musical styles. This boy loves the funk and sees how it compliments (and vice versa) all the Caribbean sounds he stirs into the bubbling pot. I guarantee, Javier Garcia will move you heart and your hips. This guy's not kidding when he says he's packing dynamite!

I discovered this artist/cd from a podcast (Ritmo Latino) and went out and bought the CD immediately. I don't understand a word of spanish but the rhythms are enough for me. Give it a listen, I'm hooked.

It took 9 for Javier Garcia to give the world his second album and in my opinion, it's worth the wait! This album is just perfect in all the sense of the word. The music, rythm, lyrics, are all in tune with a world that only Javier Garcia is capable of creating; enjoyment and non-stop dance.

In comparison with his previous work, he is still using many instruments and mixing different styles, but you can feel a more mature production in the air.

If you haven't heard his work before, I would suggest that you listen to his first CD before listening to this one.

EXCELLENT - Bravisimo! Dare you not to shake your body!!.......2005-10-20

I happened onto this young artist while on an American Airlines plane. They had a recording of his playing in a loop with some biography information mixed in. I was "hooked" on the first track! I wanted to jump up and dance right in the aisles! I love it for the same reason one of the reviewers hated it (I mean really how can something sound "too Latin"?) - Javier takes traditional sounds and rhythms and mixes it with a bit of hip hop and even rap. It's a blend that honors all styles and leaves you wanting more. I just can't say enought about this singer/songwriter/artist. He's a talent yet to be discovered in the mainstream, but I'm doing my best to spread the word - Javier Garcia deserves it. If you're considering this purchase, you need only sample the sounds on amazon. This is one of the very few CD's where I love more than half the songs. Worth every penny. Hope you like it too!

In collaboration with Syra Bonet, musicologist Rafael Pérez Arroyo, former director of the acclaimed Sony Hispánica collection, has just released the first fruit of many years of research into the music of Ancient Egypt. The result is a spectacular CD entitled Music in the Age of Pyramids, performed by Arroyo's Hathor Ensemble. Realization of the music by Arroyo was based on study of the metric structure of hymns which survive in writing, discussion of music theory from heiroglyphics, sonic descriptions by ancient authors, and iconography. Arroyo has also made an effort at decoding a partial chironomy (hand gestures, the same source claimed for Biblical music), and discovered three basic modes for Ancient Egyptian music.

Great CD! Bought it in Buenos Aires when it came out and still listen to it. Only thing that bugs me: the remix album is out of sale and he isn't publishing anything since his debut 1997.

What a tremendously impressive debut from J. Garcia ! The music is warm, cultured, colorful, and deep. The Latin sounds are very familiar yet wander into some fantastic unchartered musical landscapes and territory.The flamenco-gypsy sounding Mujer, the danceable Tranquila, the love obsessed and haunting Seras Mia (gorgeous classical quitar) are prime examples of the eclectic styles that work coherently. The simple and low keyed characteristic of La Lluvia translates into a song that can still be powerful in meaning and music (it's strength is in it's subtlety)! The roaring twenties' English sung track Love for Life includes a twist of rock. Simply astonishing ! He's a genius at being able to take so many musical international styles and bring them to perfect unity for the entire album process.

Anyone who listens to Latin artists or groups such as Mana, Thalia, or Alejandro Fernandez surely needs to add this to their musical colllection; It's a definite hit !

Album Description

This installment of the Opera Explained series tackles Turandot, one of Puccini's grandest and most sweeping operas. The opera was nearly completed when Puccini died, and his student Franco Alfano used the composer's sketches to finish the work. Set in Imperial China, Princess Turandot pronounces that she will marry the first man who can answer three riddles. The penalty for answering incorrectly is death. The score has many memorable elements, but the most famous aria is Nessun Dorma. David Timson is the narrator for this outstanding program.

I really enjoyed this CD. The narration is superb and provides interesting background to the opera. The singers might not be international stars, but only small samples are used to explain what is going on and point out the main musical and dramatic themes. For less than the cost of parking to see an opera, this CD is a bargain.

A Fine Narration Let Down by the Provincial Musical Examples.......2004-12-22

This is another in the excellent 'Opera Explained' series from Naxos, all of them written by Thomson Smillie and narrated with verve by David Timson. Already the series contains CDs devoted to 21 other operas, including such favorites as Aïda, La Bohème and Carmen, and all of them are excellent.

This one, however, is let down by the musical examples, taken from Naxos's own recording of 'Turandot' that features second-level singers. The provincial orchestra (Málaga) and conductor (Alexander Rahbari) do OK, but they cannot make up for the only barely acceptable contributions by singers soprano Giovanna Casolla as Turandot and tenor Lando Bardolini as Calaf. As Liù, soprano Masako Deguci is better but still pretty generic. And when the three principals of this opera are not up to international standards, it makes it hard to get involved in the music. Still, Smillie's text is helpful in explaining the background and the goings-on of this work, the only fairy-tale opera ever written by Puccini. Although he didn't live to finish it, he left copious notes about the final scene and Smillie makes a good case for accepting Franco Alfano's completion of the score; I agree with that assessment.

The bottom line is that the spoken narration here is fine, but you'd do better to supplement it with the complete music of 'Turandot' by buying one of the classic recordings featuring Pavarotti/Sutherland or Bjoerling/Nilsson, both at mid-price.

Wow , Javier Garcia is Goooooooood. In fact he is better than Ricky Martin if you carefully listen to what he says in the songs. All of Ricky Martin songs are good, but of the same kind. But Javier Garcia versatlity is far far better. His songs tell us how heart broken he is after his love for his woman failed. Besides Javier sounds more like a Lover than a Player, unlike Ricky Martin.

This is one of the best Latin Music I have listened after a long time. It is mix of Salsa and Reggae, but it is purely spanish. Javier Garcia RULESSS!!! Although I am not spanish and do not speak or write spanish but the music will turn you on. 100% Guranteed! Buy it and you won't be dissapointed. I recommend this album to anyone who enjoys listening to good music.
