Got Satie?.......2005-07-27
The performance done by pianist Klara Kormendi is relatively plain and simple, just as Satie might have wanted. Some of his music is actually not too difficult to play... A great CD at a budget price. Kudos to Naxos for a good performance at a good price.
Also, what I'm equally impressed is the fact that in this "appreciation" album, the listener will actually be listening to many "sets" of pieces. Some of those albums (Beethoven and Mozart for example) are mere collections of selected tracks, many just one movement of a large work, such as a symphony. In some you will only be listening to selected numbers of different large "sets" of pieces. In Chopin's for example one may listen only few of the 20+ nocturnes (No. 2 for example), 15+ waltzes, and 20+ mazurkas he wrote, so one would not feel complete listening to the whole "cycles" of short pieces. Satie, fortunatley, prefered using tiny sets of pieces, most of them only comprising of three movments each. Plus each piece is short. ALL of the three Gymnopedies. ALL of the six Gnossiennes. ALL of the three Sarabandes. ALL of the three nocturnes. One can already feel happy listening to couple "sets" within a single CD.
Once again, this may be the perfect album to get started with Erik Satie. And get ALL out of those pieces!!!

Amazon.com's Best of 2000
"I wear my influences like a f***ing badge," proclaims lead singer-songwriter Courtney Taylor regarding Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia. But while the Dandy Warhols liberally steal Rolling Stones riffs, Iggy Pop vocals, Britpop sonic surfing, and even Burt Bacharach horn sections, they give it back in spades, delivering one of the best rock albums of 2000: a masterpiece of sex, beauty, strife, and wry, raunchy-cool attitude. --Beth MassaAmazon.com
The long hiatus that led to the Dandy Warhols' masterful third album, Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia, promoted leaps-and-bounds growth in this already excellent band's music. Layers, layers, and more layers of guitars coexist here with trippy soundscapes, doot-doo-doo choruses, and even an eyebrow-cocked nod to hip-hop ("Yo, bitch," frontman Courtney Taylor mutters, sounding like Lou Reed reading an Ice Cube lyric sheet). By turns galloping, propulsive, hushed, and majestic, this is music that openly steals--from the Stones, Kinks, and Cars, among others--while fusing its sources into a unique whole of its own. Taylor lives up to the wide-screen promise of the disc's title, offering a series of what Game Theory once called "pointed accounts of people you know." The characters here brag about how they "got a beautiful new Asian girlfriend" ("Solid"), live the bicoastal high life in "itsy-bitsy teeny-weeny ridin'-up-your-butt bikini[s]" ("Horse Pills"), seek reassurance that an affair is "just a casual, casual, easy thing" ("Bohemian Like You"), and offer advice in the middle of a breakup argument: "Hey, man, turn that shit off." Seedily glamorous and replete with the best vocal asides since Jarvis Cocker let it bleed all over Pulp's Different Class, Thirteen Tales will convince you that rock is alive--and that you should still care. --Rickey WrightAmazon.com

Album Details
Third Album, the follow up to 1998's 'Come Down', which produced two singles: 'Everyday Should Be a Holiday'& 'Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth'. This new album adds further depth to the band's sound. It's the most complete D.W. record to date.Customer Reviews:
Their best so far; a good choice for Dandy's newbies.......2007-07-11
It is a rockin' album, but it is very dynamic - from quieter and melodic tunes to 'balls to the wall' blasts of fuzz and distortion intended to annoy neighbors. Song-writing varies from fairly simple and repetitive (Nietzche) to clever songs with hooks, complex chord structure, and intricate harmonies. At times dissonant, at others sweetly harmonious, and sometimes a bit of both. Harsh fuzz guitar sounds are mixed with clear, ringing acoustic guitars.
The album's sound is basic alt-rock, but draws from a variety of classic bands (Stones, Iggy Pop, Velvet Underground and others). They add a unique sound, sensibility, and tongue-in-cheek attitude that makes it refreshingly their own. There even hip-hop beats on one track. Some tracks are deliberately dissonant, others with sweet harmonies. It is the musical variety here that makes this one fun to listen to from top to bottom, meriting many listens without getting old or sounding the same.
What makes this album great is the wide range of sounds and styles, and the fact that there's not a bad track on it. The songs are seg'ed together to give a nonstop music experience, great for listening to the whole album. The seg transitions make for disruptive transitions on mix tapes, unless you do some editing.. When you play the entire album on most mp3 or computer music players, there is a brief gap in the transition as the player switches from one to the next track, unless you have gapless playback capabilities (like foobar2000, or are playing directly from the CD). For that reason I ripped the mp3s both separately and altogether as one track.
Tracks:
The first three tracks ("Godless", "Mohammed, "Nietche") are a powerful opening, starting slow and gaining strengthy until finally bursting out all over with "Nietchzhe"... a splendid trio. "Country Traveller" comes next. It's a great country-ish song on its own, but in terms of the mood it's an about face from where they took us with the first three.
The most obvious pop singles are "Bohemian Like You" (which got some airplay) and "Get Off" (which I have not heard on the radio). "Solid" and "Horse Pills" are hilarious snarky tunes that would be more at home on college radio.
The closing track, "The Gospel", is my least favorite, because it is slow and somber, and because it marks the end of a great album. But overall, there isn't a bad track on the album, though of course some are stronger than others.
There are various CD singles you can get from Amazon delears featuring tracks from this album. The title cuts on the singles are identical to the album tracks, so it is the alternative versions that are the reason to buy them. "Godless (mix)," from the "Horse Pills" single, reworks the song considerably. I like the result a lot - not better than the original, but as much as I like the song it's fun to hear a reimagined version.
I would give the album 4 1/2 stars if it were available. I usually reserve 5 stars for one of the best albums of all time. Objectively, I don't think that it is, because the quality varies; subjectively, it is certainly one of my essential favorite albums.... so 5 stars here.
One hit wonder?.......2007-05-07
If a equasion should be made, I would say it is a mixture of The Stones, Iggy Pop and Lou Reed. Loungy when it comes to numbers like "sleep" and energatic when it comes to songs like "Solid". A CD you can listen to when driving the country. Singing along with "a Bohemian Like You" and leaving the gas closed when listening to things like "Nietzsche".
I, for one, am very hapy to have obtained this cd. It will be one of those which is at the front row in my collection!
Buy this album now!.......2007-04-19
This Album Is Incredible.......2007-03-04
However, if the Dandys are going to do country, they really need to keep it off the front-porch hoedown vibe (Country Leaver), and keep it more on a "wearily crawling the dusty trail home after seeing some spirit visions" mentality (The Gospel). The latter is done really well, while the former is done poorly at best.
Country Leaver is really the only downside to this record, but do not let that dissuade you from getting one of the best indie rock records ever made.
I don't smoke...but I just may need a cigarette.......2007-02-27
There are weaker tracks, where the pose is overplayed, like "Horse Pills" or "Solid." But on the whole, "13 Tales" carefully balances bombast with craft in such a seductive way that lyrical foibles are quickly forgiven and the cohesive, anthemic whole -- thick with winking guitar and snaky organ riffs -- becomes as satisfying as morning sex.

It's simple: in his various realizations of the piano music of Erik Satie, Aldo Ciccolini set a standard that has yet to be bettered. This compilation, drawn from recordings made between 1966 and 1971, is consequently the best of the best. Ciccolini always played Satie's music as though it had been written by Claude Debussy, not by some cheap charlatan or uneducated primitive (which, to an extent that is still debatable, Satie was). The result is that these seemingly simple piano pieces acquire a tonal allure that is as surprising as it is undeniable. They possess an understated sophistication that points directly toward Ravel and Poulenc, at the same time providing an opening to the minimalist aesthetic of the later 20th century. Ciccolini's playing is pliant and graceful, and under his fingers the music seems to breathe and come alive. What more could a composer or a listener want? --Ted LibbeyCustomer Reviews:
Picasso in sound.......2006-02-19
Great but NOT complete.......2004-12-23
Aldo Ciccolini always has been the greatest interpreter of Satie's work for piano. Ciccolini has a feel for Satie that no one else does, although I have to admit that I prefer a faster tempo to "Poudre D'Or" than the slower, introspective tempo Ciccolini always uses, but that's only a small matter of personal preference. These recordings were originally made in 1967 and 1971 and the sound quality is excellent. At the dawn of the CD era at various sessions from 1983-1986, Ciccolini recorded Satie's complete works for piano on EMI on 5 CDs. They are currently out of print in America, with the exception of one compilation CD (also available at Amazon at the time of writing) with Gabriel Tacchino playing the 2nd piano on the pieces for 2 pianos. Ciccolini was overdubbed playing the 2nd piano on the original recordings in this review. I have a slight preference for the later recordings, but many seem to prefer these originals. You can't go wrong with these, just understand that they are not complete and the missing songs are among Satie's best.
There's only one........2004-06-26
Don't forget Satie was an Anti-Romantic.......2002-02-25
Satie was an anti-romantic composer, at the point of creating the "furniture-music" (musique d'ameublement) which refuses that music could be so expressive as romantics wanted. Other ones clasifies him as a "Surrealist" composer (anti-romantic movement too), but there are no signs of dreams of unconsciousness through his work. Since that point of view you could play Satie's music anyway but expressively. Satie wasn't Debussy, besides the fact that they knew personally and admire each other. Could you play Debussy in a plain style without damage?. I don't think so, because Satie was farther of expressive tradition than Debussy: we can say that Debussy is a spirit of the XIX Century while Satie is a precursor of the XXth. Remember his own words: "I came to the world too young in a time too old".
The best performance I heard of the piano work of our composer was in charge of Jacques Fevrier on the excelent album called "Monsieur Erik Satie", with such a "sideman" as another member of the group of six as Georges Auric for the 4 hands pieces.
I wave goodbye with a great embrace to all Satie's fans.

The major-label debut from Portland's psychedelic-pop protagonists swirls earfuls of 1960s guitar riffs around 1990s Brit-pop nuances. If Come Down occasionally sounds like Neil Young fronting Oasis ("Boys Better," "Minnesoter") or Lou Reed doing The Verve ("Good Morning"), it just as often turns self-referential and obscure. The quartet constructs a slavishly fashionable sound rife with drug references (the relentlessly jangly post-Cobain anthem, "Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth," includes the memorable chorus: "Heroin is so passe") and sleepy, detached elegance. There's sweeping beauty here, too, in the lush, intricate guitar work (courtesy Courtney Taylor and Peter Holmstrom) and the cooing female backing vocals (Zia McCabe). --Mark WoodliefAmazon.com

The Pose Is Real And So Is The Music!.......2006-07-03
1. Be-in--The title is taken from those drug sessions hippies used to have in the sixties. This is a very long song with a long intro. It's pretty trippy, not surprisingly, and is about drugs. I've always imagined that this song would be a good theme song for a TV show about kids in some type of weird boarding school.
2. Boys Better--One of the hits off the album. Very catchy and powerful. Definitely wakes the listener up after "Be-in".
3. Minnesoter--A brassy, sassy number that reminded some critics of Oasis. It has a raunchy sound to it and raunchy lyrics as well--although I have no idea what the song is actually about and am not one hundred percent certain what `finding one's way to Minnesoter' is a metaphor for. Do I want to know?
4. Orange--A slow, hazy song with less texture than "Be-in". Not one of the better songs on the album.
5. I Love You--Another trippy song yet Courtney Taylor drone becomes almost hypnotic as he numbly repeats over and over again "I love you, I love you, I love you". Apparently this song is also used as the background music for a Pontiac car commercial.
6. Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth--The BEST song on the album! Basically a tongue-in-cheek poke-in-the-eye to the heroin chic culture. Yet there's something oddly poignant about the eye-rolling way in which Courtney Taylor insists, "Heroin is so passé" over the guitar-strumming. The Dandy Warhols didn't do another song this strong until "Bohemian Like You". The video for this song is well-worth checking out--come to think of it, all the Dandy Warhols' videos are. The scene is a psychotic game show in which junkie contestants compete for prizes such as car crashes and tombstones, including dancing syringes.
7. Everyday Should Be a Holiday--Another fast-paced track with a really good dance beat. Apparently it was included in the soundtrack for "There's Something About Mary". Don't miss the slipped-in self-reference, "Super cool, the Dandies rule, okay!"
8. Good Morning--A slow, haunting song. The lyrics, which describe a "good morning" seem to be contradicted by the eerie music which seems somewhat depressing. A quiet gem on the album.
9. Whipping Tree--Another, quiet song. Courtney Taylor kind of mumbles in this one and it strikes me as kind of bland, although I'm sure many people can empathize with the lyrics.
10. Green--Similar to "Whipping Tree" only with more emotion. "I only believe what I want to believe... yes it's because I'm greener than green." Clearly about inexperience of whatever variety.
11. Cool as Kim Deal--A very sunny, cool-sounding song extolling the virtues of ultimate rock chick, Kim Deal.
12. Hard On for Jesus--Definitely play this at your local Church picnic. You owe yourself and your pastor that much.
13&14. "Pete International Airport" and "The Creep Out"--these last two songs are probably the worst on the album and together make up fourteen minutes. They just consist of weird, spacy music and muted vocals. I can assume that "Pete International Airport" is some sort of reference to guitarist Peter Holstrom, but other than that, they both lack focus and I usually skip over them.
Half of the songs on this album showcase the Dandy Warhols' ability to make brilliant, satirical rock anthems like "Minnesoter", "Boys Better", and "Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth", while the other half can be classified as slow, trippy drug songs. These slower, murkier tracks aren't necessarily bad as a rule--"Be-in" and "Good Morning" are quality, but others, like "Orange", "The Creep Out", etc., just seem to be long drawn-out layers of music with no substance. In conclusion, the Dandy Warhols should be commended for being a band that has the guts to be edgy, funny, and produce quality music that isn't categorically dark, even if they occasionally miss their mark.
This album has it all too.... .......2005-10-27

The Dandy Warhols' fourth album arrives with a cover that melds Sticky Fingers and The Velvet Underground and Nico. One therefore assumes that leader Courtney Taylor-Taylor's claim that predecessor Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia was "the last classic rock album" was a bit tongue-in-cheek. (Actually, one had assumed that already.) Reversing rock's usual guitars-front-keyboards-as-filigree, Monkey House takes the Dandys into a challenging sphere while remaining undeniably organic sounding. The band and co-producers Nick Rhodes (Duran Duran and Tony Visconti (Low, Electric Warrior) have built elaborate but never stifling arrangements of these songs--check out the way guest Nile Rodgers's rhythm guitar part subtly funks up the last minute of "Scientist," or how the group makes the pulsing "(You Come In) Burned" perhaps the best yet of its trademark trancelike album closers. Taylor-Taylor continues to display growing self-knowledge in his "words of comic wisdom": "I Am Sound" isn't a declaration of aural omniscience, but a simple affirmation of OK-ness, while "The Last High" dissects the end of a high-style love affair. Miss this and miss one of the year's finest rock & roll records. --Rickey WrightAmazon.com

I Try to Live on Science Alone.......2006-08-21
This album is a tribute to a Kurt Vonnegut short story collection, but one needn't be familiar with that author to recognize how excellent some of the pop herein is. It's laid-back, catchy, and sometimes stupidly goofy, as with the song "I Am a Scientist." ("I am a scientist... I try to live on science alone..." [repeat many times]).
Don't get me wrong; this isn't a perfect album; in fact, only five of its songs are good, but those five are very, VERY good indeed. (For the record, they are "We Used to Be Friends," the afore-mentioned science song, "The Dandy Warhols Love Almost Everyone," "The Last High," and "I Am Sound.")

When one thinks of musicals from Hollywood's golden age, the initials MGM come almost instantly to mind. Indeed when veteran song-and-dance man George M. Cohan was negotiating a film based on his colorful life story, his first choice was Metro--until a falling out with studio chief Louis B. Mayer. But L.B.'s loss eventually became Warner Brothers'--and film history's--gain when the Burbank studio's Cohan musical became a massive, patriotic hit in the opening months of World War II. As chronicled in this vibrantly restored, first-ever complete soundtrack for the film, it was a compelling twist of fate. James Cagney turns in one of the screen's most ostensibly unlikely--and ultimately indelible--musical performances (netting him his only Best Actor Oscar ®), teaming with studio music director Roy Heindorf to update Cohan's once-quaint turn-of the-century patriotic ditties ("You're a Grand Old Flag," "Over There," "Yankee Doodle Boy") and infectious vaudevillian chestnuts ("Give My Regards to Broadway," "Harrigan") with bracing dollops of the studio's '40s orchestral sass--and, just months after Pearl Harbor, some crucial historical parallels. Also included are four bonus tracks that remarkably survived the film's preproduction, including an outtake of "You Remind Me of My Mother" and voice-and-piano-only rehearsal versions of "Give My Regards to Broadway" and "You're a Grand Old Flag" that further underscore Cagney's deceptively effortless ability to sell a song despite his limited musical gifts. It's a long overdue showcase for a true American film musical gem. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Yankee Doodle Dandy.......2006-06-30
Amazing! Wonderful! Just buy it - you won't be sorry!.......2005-03-05
I am so very glad I bought this CD. I own the DVD of "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and watch it all the time, so I almost didn't buy this, wondering if I really needed yet another CD.
Well, thank God I didn't pay any attention to that dumb idea!
If you love "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and Cagney, you just have to buy this soundtrack. It's like being able to take the movie with you anywhere ... it's not just the songs - as others have said - but also includes bits of Cagney's voice-overs, even the tap-dancing from the end of "Little Johnny Jones." And since the audio system in my car is better than my TV's, it all seemed even bigger, richer and better. (George M. would love that!)
Wonderful, wonderful stuff!
What a find!!.......2003-06-15
Monumental effort must have gone into this soundtrack, given the age of the original recordings. The tracks here are crisp, clear, and bright, with no evidence of how long ago they were first put down. The editors were also generous in their inclusion of dialogue that ties some of the tracks together (for example, we hear the man tell Johny Jones to watch for the skyrocket, then we hear the skyrocket as it leads into "Give My Regards to Broadway"). There are a couple of places where the endings are slightly abrupt but this is because, in the movie, the music fades into extended dialogue.
The only bit of dialogue I expected to hear in a song, but didn't, is in "Over There" near the very end of the film, when Cagney/Cohan has fallen in step with the soldiers going off to WWII, as they're singing "Over There", when the soldier nearest him says something like, "What's wrong, old timer, don't know the words?" and Cagney says, "Seems to me I do" and starts singing along. That's minor and pales next to how wonderful the rest of this soundtrack is.
One of the biggest treats on this CD is that we get to hear some of Cagney's tapping, notably in "Give My Regards to Broadway", "You're a Grand Old Flag", and - one of my favorite moments in movie history - when he dances down the White House stairs to "Yankee Doodle" near the end).
The outtake is not a humorous one, simply a track they decided not to use. It and the rehearsal tracks are all just the performers voices with piano accompaniment. I especially enjoyed hearing Cagney rehearsing "You're a Grand Old Flag".
If you like Cagney, if you like Cohan's music, if you like movies "the way they used to make them", or if you're not ashamed to get a little choked up with patriotism once in a while, you will not be disappointed in this CD!

In Dig!, the hilarious and sometimes painful documentary that won the 2004 Sundance Grand Jury Prize, the Dandy Warhols matter-of-factly describe themselves the most well-adjusted band in America. While its true that in contrast to the remarkable chaos that surrounds rivals the Brian Jonestown Massacre, the Portland, Oregon group's propensity for onstage nudity and offstage decadence does seem somewhat tame, listening to its fifth album, Odditorium or Warlords of Mars, suggests they are still rock 'n' roll animals at heart: Thrusting through the sexy riffs of "Smoke It;" Reveling in the sheer horniness of ready-for-Vegas single, "All The Money or the Simple Life Honey;" Or simply floating above the ground with a clutch of space-rock jams that flashback to 1995's trippy Dandy's Rule OK? --Aidin VaziriCustomer Reviews:
Some of the best -- and worst -- of the Dandys.......2007-03-08
Here, the Dandys seem to take a step back and a step forward at the same time. They try to take everything they've learned about making music over the last 10 years, and re-apply it to what they did in the beginning: combining short, hook-filled pop with more challenging and difficult soundscapes. The result is mixed, but really interesting. There are songs on this CD that I am totally crazy about and can't stop listening to: "Easy" for example: even though I can't understand a word that he's saying, the groove and the progression of the song are just irresistable. Then there are some OK "hit singles," like "All the Money or the Simple Life Honey." There is some great melancholia -- "Everyone is Totally Insane" and "Holding Me Up" are both great songs that happen to be somewhat grim. And I actually like "Love is the New Feel Awful."
Then there is a lot of stuff that does not do anything for me. I don't listen to "Smoke it" or "The New Country or "Down Like Disco."
Even though every single song on this CD is not a success, there really is some great music here, and I can't wait to hear what the Dandys do next.

I've given it time..........2006-08-17
I finally came back to it on a few of my recent long car trips when I had some time to really focus on an album.
I have this to say: "Ouch."
I would have been happy with an album 1/2 as good as "Thirteen Tales" or 1/3 as good as "Monkey House," but it was not to be.
I still wouldn't move it from #1 on my list of "Biggest Disappointments of 2005."
T.T.H. (or, Trying Too Hard).......2006-08-07
So what gives? Well, we all know people who ARE funny, and then there are the people who try too hard to be funny. The effort shows, and it's not helpful. My guess is that the Dandy Warhols are trying too hard to be hip. On virtually every track, the effort to be ironic and hip is showing. It starts with the unfunny Bill Kurtis intro and continues through the trip-hopped entirety of the project.
Indulgent and inspired is good. But just plain old indulgent? Bad. But hey, it's not like the whole CD is a wash; "All The Money Or The Simple Life Honey" is a good tune. There's some nice samples one could pluck from here if one was so inclined. And plus, lots of the songs have funny names. So, hometown guy says three stars... though you may not be so charitable.

Mr. Gould: the Genius of Recorded Music!.......2005-01-31
Gould was playing Schoenberg in the 1950s--just shortly after the composer's death. He realizes the Op. 11 pieces in a very late-Brahmsian manner, in keeping with his gestalt of turn-of-the-century Modern music, viz., Brahms, Strauss, Scriabin, Schoenberg, Hindemith, et al.
The Op. 25 Suite is an exquisite refraction of a Bach French Suite--but done in Schoenberg's 12-tone form. Here Gould plays Schoenberg as he does Bach!
Gould's realization of Schoenberg's Piano Concerto is very secco (dry), and intentionally miked very closely: i.e., the recording was made with microphones placed close to the performers, rather than way back out in the audience area of a hall. This was Gould's idea, and the results are outstanding: the best Schoenberg Piano Concerto available--pace, Uchida and Brendel, et al.
Gould's Pierrot is his first attempt at conducting, and one wishes he had completed it and done more. In the end, Gould conducted Wagner's Siegfried Idyll with outstanding results.
This is a great set.
The definitive interpretation of Schoenberg piano works.......2003-12-27
By detaching yourself from the tonality of traditional tonal music, and immersing in the world of Schoenberg, the shape and lines of the music will gradually become clear. Gould is perhaps the greatest advocate and messenger of Schoenberg's distinct language.
