4 out of 5 stars The Best of Erick Satie.......2007-06-11

The reason I bought this product, is because I was familiar with the 3 Gymnopedies of Erick Satie and also another of his work: The Gnosiemme (I'm not sure about the spelling) No. 4. After listening to the CD I felt very happy with it because include both versions of the Gymnopedies, the Orchestral and the one for piano and of course the Gnosiemme No. 4 which I now like it very much. The pianist makes justice to Satie's work and if you like his work is a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars A forerunner to minimalism.......2007-04-13

Satie is a forerunner to minimalism. Each piece of his music is a beauty. He also had great influence on many famous composers and musicians in his age. This album is one of the best piano classical.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-07-07

Just a great collection from Erik Satie. I would highly recommend this one!

The recording is well done. Eric Satie is not the type of music that many people will appreciate. I like his music and this particular recording.

5 out of 5 stars Got Satie?.......2005-07-27

... Well folks. This may be the perfect album to get started. This features some of the best-known works by the wierd and witty Erik Satie, including the Gymnopedies (both the original piano and the orchestrated versions), the Gnossiennes, just to name a few.

The performance done by pianist Klara Kormendi is relatively plain and simple, just as Satie might have wanted. Some of his music is actually not too difficult to play... A great CD at a budget price. Kudos to Naxos for a good performance at a good price.

Also, what I'm equally impressed is the fact that in this "appreciation" album, the listener will actually be listening to many "sets" of pieces. Some of those albums (Beethoven and Mozart for example) are mere collections of selected tracks, many just one movement of a large work, such as a symphony. In some you will only be listening to selected numbers of different large "sets" of pieces. In Chopin's for example one may listen only few of the 20+ nocturnes (No. 2 for example), 15+ waltzes, and 20+ mazurkas he wrote, so one would not feel complete listening to the whole "cycles" of short pieces. Satie, fortunatley, prefered using tiny sets of pieces, most of them only comprising of three movments each. Plus each piece is short. ALL of the three Gymnopedies. ALL of the six Gnossiennes. ALL of the three Sarabandes. ALL of the three nocturnes. One can already feel happy listening to couple "sets" within a single CD.

Once again, this may be the perfect album to get started with Erik Satie. And get ALL out of those pieces!!!

Amazon.com's Best of 2000

"I wear my influences like a f***ing badge," proclaims lead singer-songwriter Courtney Taylor regarding Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia. But while the Dandy Warhols liberally steal Rolling Stones riffs, Iggy Pop vocals, Britpop sonic surfing, and even Burt Bacharach horn sections, they give it back in spades, delivering one of the best rock albums of 2000: a masterpiece of sex, beauty, strife, and wry, raunchy-cool attitude. --Beth Massa

The long hiatus that led to the Dandy Warhols' masterful third album, Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia, promoted leaps-and-bounds growth in this already excellent band's music. Layers, layers, and more layers of guitars coexist here with trippy soundscapes, doot-doo-doo choruses, and even an eyebrow-cocked nod to hip-hop ("Yo, bitch," frontman Courtney Taylor mutters, sounding like Lou Reed reading an Ice Cube lyric sheet). By turns galloping, propulsive, hushed, and majestic, this is music that openly steals--from the Stones, Kinks, and Cars, among others--while fusing its sources into a unique whole of its own. Taylor lives up to the wide-screen promise of the disc's title, offering a series of what Game Theory once called "pointed accounts of people you know." The characters here brag about how they "got a beautiful new Asian girlfriend" ("Solid"), live the bicoastal high life in "itsy-bitsy teeny-weeny ridin'-up-your-butt bikini[s]" ("Horse Pills"), seek reassurance that an affair is "just a casual, casual, easy thing" ("Bohemian Like You"), and offer advice in the middle of a breakup argument: "Hey, man, turn that shit off." Seedily glamorous and replete with the best vocal asides since Jarvis Cocker let it bleed all over Pulp's Different Class, Thirteen Tales will convince you that rock is alive--and that you should still care. --Rickey Wright

Album Details

Third Album, the follow up to 1998's 'Come Down', which produced two singles: 'Everyday Should Be a Holiday'& 'Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth'. This new album adds further depth to the band's sound. It's the most complete D.W. record to date.

5 out of 5 stars Their best so far; a good choice for Dandy's newbies.......2007-07-11

I think this is the best Dandy Warhols album so far, and I like the band a lot. "13 Tales" is much more solid than the previous "Come Down" and consistently better songwriting. If you don't know their music, this album is a tasty starting point.

It is a rockin' album, but it is very dynamic - from quieter and melodic tunes to 'balls to the wall' blasts of fuzz and distortion intended to annoy neighbors. Song-writing varies from fairly simple and repetitive (Nietzche) to clever songs with hooks, complex chord structure, and intricate harmonies. At times dissonant, at others sweetly harmonious, and sometimes a bit of both. Harsh fuzz guitar sounds are mixed with clear, ringing acoustic guitars.

The album's sound is basic alt-rock, but draws from a variety of classic bands (Stones, Iggy Pop, Velvet Underground and others). They add a unique sound, sensibility, and tongue-in-cheek attitude that makes it refreshingly their own. There even hip-hop beats on one track. Some tracks are deliberately dissonant, others with sweet harmonies. It is the musical variety here that makes this one fun to listen to from top to bottom, meriting many listens without getting old or sounding the same.

What makes this album great is the wide range of sounds and styles, and the fact that there's not a bad track on it. The songs are seg'ed together to give a nonstop music experience, great for listening to the whole album. The seg transitions make for disruptive transitions on mix tapes, unless you do some editing.. When you play the entire album on most mp3 or computer music players, there is a brief gap in the transition as the player switches from one to the next track, unless you have gapless playback capabilities (like foobar2000, or are playing directly from the CD). For that reason I ripped the mp3s both separately and altogether as one track.

Tracks:

The first three tracks ("Godless", "Mohammed, "Nietche") are a powerful opening, starting slow and gaining strengthy until finally bursting out all over with "Nietchzhe"... a splendid trio. "Country Traveller" comes next. It's a great country-ish song on its own, but in terms of the mood it's an about face from where they took us with the first three.

The most obvious pop singles are "Bohemian Like You" (which got some airplay) and "Get Off" (which I have not heard on the radio). "Solid" and "Horse Pills" are hilarious snarky tunes that would be more at home on college radio.

The closing track, "The Gospel", is my least favorite, because it is slow and somber, and because it marks the end of a great album. But overall, there isn't a bad track on the album, though of course some are stronger than others.

There are various CD singles you can get from Amazon delears featuring tracks from this album. The title cuts on the singles are identical to the album tracks, so it is the alternative versions that are the reason to buy them. "Godless (mix)," from the "Horse Pills" single, reworks the song considerably. I like the result a lot - not better than the original, but as much as I like the song it's fun to hear a reimagined version.

I would give the album 4 1/2 stars if it were available. I usually reserve 5 stars for one of the best albums of all time. Objectively, I don't think that it is, because the quality varies; subjectively, it is certainly one of my essential favorite albums.... so 5 stars here.

4 out of 5 stars One hit wonder?.......2007-05-07

This band is known to be a one hit wonder in Europe. Since one of it's most well known hit, A Bohemian Like You, has been used for a commercial (Vodafone, around the year 2000). Unfair, because this band has more to offer than just that.

If a equasion should be made, I would say it is a mixture of The Stones, Iggy Pop and Lou Reed. Loungy when it comes to numbers like "sleep" and energatic when it comes to songs like "Solid". A CD you can listen to when driving the country. Singing along with "a Bohemian Like You" and leaving the gas closed when listening to things like "Nietzsche".

I, for one, am very hapy to have obtained this cd. It will be one of those which is at the front row in my collection!

5 out of 5 stars Buy this album now!.......2007-04-19

Just to add a few words to echo most of the other reviews. Yes, there are a couple of weaker songs, so really it's not a perfect five stars, but it's close. As a whole, the album plays well and seems to be a rarity these days: an album that evokes a mood and makes sure all of its songs follow it. Most albums out there are a collection of songs thrown together. This group knows how to write listenable music. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars This Album Is Incredible.......2007-03-04

I'll keep it short: If you need an album to strut around town feeling cooler than everyone else while listening, this is the one to do it with.

However, if the Dandys are going to do country, they really need to keep it off the front-porch hoedown vibe (Country Leaver), and keep it more on a "wearily crawling the dusty trail home after seeing some spirit visions" mentality (The Gospel). The latter is done really well, while the former is done poorly at best.

Country Leaver is really the only downside to this record, but do not let that dissuade you from getting one of the best indie rock records ever made.

4 out of 5 stars I don't smoke...but I just may need a cigarette.......2007-02-27

The Dandy Warhols take a lot of guff for being posed, insincere, and party-addled. The irony is thick enough to use as a construction material: it is in fact this appearance of pose that IS the pose. Ultimately, the joke is not on the listener, though, as the post-Velvets/post-13th Floor Elevators confections that they (regularly) drop with such casual nonchalance betray a workmanship and a sensitivity to songwriting that tips its hand. This is not a band of party-hardy dilettantes, but an informed and eclectic group of talented musicians who probably have stupefyingly impressive record collections. They (wisely) steer clear of change-the-world soapboxing and churn out anthem after anthem -- and "13 Tales" is their magnum opus (so far).

There are weaker tracks, where the pose is overplayed, like "Horse Pills" or "Solid." But on the whole, "13 Tales" carefully balances bombast with craft in such a seductive way that lyrical foibles are quickly forgiven and the cohesive, anthemic whole -- thick with winking guitar and snaky organ riffs -- becomes as satisfying as morning sex.

It's simple: in his various realizations of the piano music of Erik Satie, Aldo Ciccolini set a standard that has yet to be bettered. This compilation, drawn from recordings made between 1966 and 1971, is consequently the best of the best. Ciccolini always played Satie's music as though it had been written by Claude Debussy, not by some cheap charlatan or uneducated primitive (which, to an extent that is still debatable, Satie was). The result is that these seemingly simple piano pieces acquire a tonal allure that is as surprising as it is undeniable. They possess an understated sophistication that points directly toward Ravel and Poulenc, at the same time providing an opening to the minimalist aesthetic of the later 20th century. Ciccolini's playing is pliant and graceful, and under his fingers the music seems to breathe and come alive. What more could a composer or a listener want? --Ted Libbey

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Picasso in sound.......2006-02-19

Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau and Eric Satie were drinking buddies; it shouldn't be surprising that their work, though in different media, should bear striking similarities. This CD set replaces a very badly abused vinyl recording from the 1960s. No one plays Satie like Aldo Ciccolini. I do wish the Parade had been included, Satie wrote the music, Cocteau the libretto and Picasso did the sets and costumes-Satie's only ballet. Of course, the circa 1910 audience walked out. It's the story of an out-of-work ballet company that goes out onto the streets of Paris to try to get customers to come inside. The customers are stereotypes like the American in a cowboy outfit who adds the sound of this six gun to the music and the secretary who types through the encounter. The back wall of the theater was covered with Picasso designed neon signs flashing in bright colors throughout the performance. Across the front of the stage he'd strung acetate on which were playing street scenes of Paris from three cameras-red, blue and green. The men were way, way ahead of their times.

5 out of 5 stars Great but NOT complete.......2004-12-23

Please note that this collection does NOT contain Erik Satie's complete works for piano. The collection makes no such claim, but at 5 CDs, some may assume it to be complete and none of the other reviews to date mention this. I am too lazy to do the research to come up with a complete list, but offhand I know that these songs are missing - "Je Te Veux", "Fantaisie-Valse" and "Valse-Ballet". These 3 are among my favorite Satie pieces, so yes, I think the collection is diminished somewhat by their absence.

Aldo Ciccolini always has been the greatest interpreter of Satie's work for piano. Ciccolini has a feel for Satie that no one else does, although I have to admit that I prefer a faster tempo to "Poudre D'Or" than the slower, introspective tempo Ciccolini always uses, but that's only a small matter of personal preference. These recordings were originally made in 1967 and 1971 and the sound quality is excellent. At the dawn of the CD era at various sessions from 1983-1986, Ciccolini recorded Satie's complete works for piano on EMI on 5 CDs. They are currently out of print in America, with the exception of one compilation CD (also available at Amazon at the time of writing) with Gabriel Tacchino playing the 2nd piano on the pieces for 2 pianos. Ciccolini was overdubbed playing the 2nd piano on the original recordings in this review. I have a slight preference for the later recordings, but many seem to prefer these originals. You can't go wrong with these, just understand that they are not complete and the missing songs are among Satie's best.

5 out of 5 stars There's only one........2004-06-26

If you're reading this, you've already heard Satie's music, so I needn't to go into that. I do want to say that this is the only recording of Satie that is worth hearing. Ciccolini is the only foot that will fit the Satie glass slipper. Don't waste your money on the ugly step-sisters.

4 out of 5 stars Don't forget Satie was an Anti-Romantic.......2002-02-25

No one could deny that setting every disperse music in a unique album is a remarkable job. But I didn't like much the approach of Ciccolini, which I knew around 1975 while getting borrowed the vinyl LPs in the Embassy of France in Buenos Aires. Now I'd like to explain to whom it may concern why do I feel that way.
Satie was an anti-romantic composer, at the point of creating the "furniture-music" (musique d'ameublement) which refuses that music could be so expressive as romantics wanted. Other ones clasifies him as a "Surrealist" composer (anti-romantic movement too), but there are no signs of dreams of unconsciousness through his work. Since that point of view you could play Satie's music anyway but expressively. Satie wasn't Debussy, besides the fact that they knew personally and admire each other. Could you play Debussy in a plain style without damage?. I don't think so, because Satie was farther of expressive tradition than Debussy: we can say that Debussy is a spirit of the XIX Century while Satie is a precursor of the XXth. Remember his own words: "I came to the world too young in a time too old".
The best performance I heard of the piano work of our composer was in charge of Jacques Fevrier on the excelent album called "Monsieur Erik Satie", with such a "sideman" as another member of the group of six as Georges Auric for the 4 hands pieces.
I wave goodbye with a great embrace to all Satie's fans.

5 out of 5 stars "Electric Spirit of Eric Satie" fans this is the one !.......2001-08-17

Fans of "The Electronic Spirit of Eric Satie" will immediately recognize Aldo Ciccolini as one of the few musicians in touch with the true "Satie" style. The selections correspond to "Electric Spirit" ; except, performed as a good piano solo. The piano recording is done so well it's better than most orchestral versions. It sounds very much like "Electric Spirit" without orchestration nor electronic "boops" and "beeps"-- just a good piano. It's really just as funny and powerful; and here it has a class act. This performance is a rare find !

The major-label debut from Portland's psychedelic-pop protagonists swirls earfuls of 1960s guitar riffs around 1990s Brit-pop nuances. If Come Down occasionally sounds like Neil Young fronting Oasis ("Boys Better," "Minnesoter") or Lou Reed doing The Verve ("Good Morning"), it just as often turns self-referential and obscure. The quartet constructs a slavishly fashionable sound rife with drug references (the relentlessly jangly post-Cobain anthem, "Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth," includes the memorable chorus: "Heroin is so passe") and sleepy, detached elegance. There's sweeping beauty here, too, in the lush, intricate guitar work (courtesy Courtney Taylor and Peter Holmstrom) and the cooing female backing vocals (Zia McCabe). --Mark Woodlief

4 out of 5 stars overall a very good CD.......2007-01-29

This album is a must-listen for anyone who has listen to the Dandy Warhols or this type of music. The songs "Not if you were the last junkie on earth" and "every day should be a holiday" were great music videos and just flat out great rock songs with a more upbeat tempo, while "Green" and "Orange" are great slower songs with very cool melodies. Most of the rest of the songs are pretty sweet as well, all very catchy and with a lot of "hooks" on each song. "Be-In", "Boys Better", "Good Morning", and "Minnesoter" are all very steady rock songs in their own respective right, as each one has its own great uniqueness. The is a very good album and I'd recommend it to anyone. The only reason I gave it a 4 was because the last 2 songs sounded like they were just experimenting with different sounds but had no lyrics at all, which got kinda boring to listen to, but the first 12 songs except for "whipping tree" make getting this album definetly worth it.

4 out of 5 stars may be addictive.......2006-11-03

I came to this band late in life, but now can't get enough. This album lacks some of the catchy pop feel of Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia, so is not as immediately accessible. It's also a little more self-indulgent, in my view. That said, I listen to it constantly. Its inaccessiblity renders it more interesting than lots of more hooky works. I actually considered crossing the pond to attend the 8/23 Islington (London) show, but it was sold out before I could get myself in gear to make a reservation. I'm not a jet-setter, but this album clinched it for me. Much as I love Thirteen Tales and Monkey House, they didn't make me gung ho to go to London.

4 out of 5 stars The Pose Is Real And So Is The Music!.......2006-07-03

The Dandy Warhols are the type of band that are exactly as their image represents them to be. So basically, if the name "the Dandy Warhols" sounds like the coolest, cleverest name for a band ever, you will love their music. You'll probably also crack up at their antic-riddled articles and interviews and marvel at how people who are so talented can manage to be as sexy as Courtney, Pete, and Zia. If you don't get the name, well, you're probably just as relieved that the band is pretty obscure in the US of A. Their second album--first major label release--represents both the best and worst of what the Dandy Warhols are capable of. While, personally, I think this album has more individual standouts than the later, more renowned "Thirteen Tales of Urban Bohemia", the latter has a larger number of good, even rock songs and coheres better as an album.

1. Be-in--The title is taken from those drug sessions hippies used to have in the sixties. This is a very long song with a long intro. It's pretty trippy, not surprisingly, and is about drugs. I've always imagined that this song would be a good theme song for a TV show about kids in some type of weird boarding school.

2. Boys Better--One of the hits off the album. Very catchy and powerful. Definitely wakes the listener up after "Be-in".

3. Minnesoter--A brassy, sassy number that reminded some critics of Oasis. It has a raunchy sound to it and raunchy lyrics as well--although I have no idea what the song is actually about and am not one hundred percent certain what `finding one's way to Minnesoter' is a metaphor for. Do I want to know?

4. Orange--A slow, hazy song with less texture than "Be-in". Not one of the better songs on the album.

5. I Love You--Another trippy song yet Courtney Taylor drone becomes almost hypnotic as he numbly repeats over and over again "I love you, I love you, I love you". Apparently this song is also used as the background music for a Pontiac car commercial.

6. Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth--The BEST song on the album! Basically a tongue-in-cheek poke-in-the-eye to the heroin chic culture. Yet there's something oddly poignant about the eye-rolling way in which Courtney Taylor insists, "Heroin is so passé" over the guitar-strumming. The Dandy Warhols didn't do another song this strong until "Bohemian Like You". The video for this song is well-worth checking out--come to think of it, all the Dandy Warhols' videos are. The scene is a psychotic game show in which junkie contestants compete for prizes such as car crashes and tombstones, including dancing syringes.

7. Everyday Should Be a Holiday--Another fast-paced track with a really good dance beat. Apparently it was included in the soundtrack for "There's Something About Mary". Don't miss the slipped-in self-reference, "Super cool, the Dandies rule, okay!"

8. Good Morning--A slow, haunting song. The lyrics, which describe a "good morning" seem to be contradicted by the eerie music which seems somewhat depressing. A quiet gem on the album.

9. Whipping Tree--Another, quiet song. Courtney Taylor kind of mumbles in this one and it strikes me as kind of bland, although I'm sure many people can empathize with the lyrics.

10. Green--Similar to "Whipping Tree" only with more emotion. "I only believe what I want to believe... yes it's because I'm greener than green." Clearly about inexperience of whatever variety.

11. Cool as Kim Deal--A very sunny, cool-sounding song extolling the virtues of ultimate rock chick, Kim Deal.

12. Hard On for Jesus--Definitely play this at your local Church picnic. You owe yourself and your pastor that much.

13&14. "Pete International Airport" and "The Creep Out"--these last two songs are probably the worst on the album and together make up fourteen minutes. They just consist of weird, spacy music and muted vocals. I can assume that "Pete International Airport" is some sort of reference to guitarist Peter Holstrom, but other than that, they both lack focus and I usually skip over them.

Half of the songs on this album showcase the Dandy Warhols' ability to make brilliant, satirical rock anthems like "Minnesoter", "Boys Better", and "Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth", while the other half can be classified as slow, trippy drug songs. These slower, murkier tracks aren't necessarily bad as a rule--"Be-in" and "Good Morning" are quality, but others, like "Orange", "The Creep Out", etc., just seem to be long drawn-out layers of music with no substance. In conclusion, the Dandy Warhols should be commended for being a band that has the guts to be edgy, funny, and produce quality music that isn't categorically dark, even if they occasionally miss their mark.

5 out of 5 stars This album has it all too.... .......2005-10-27

I only write reviews about the best of the things I find on amazon.com but to say that '13 tales of ubran bohemia' is the only awesome album put out by the Dandy's is in short blasphemy. While 13 is the apex so far this album is everything so many artists never achieve even for one song. The poppy hit is 'not if you were the last junkie on earth' but not the albums best song (I'll let you decide which is). I'll admit I'm a Portlander but this is too good to miss.

5 out of 5 stars I never get tired of The Dandy Warhols.......2005-09-13

What a great album! I think this CD contains most of my favorites by the Dandy Warhols..."Be-in", "Boys Better", "I Love You", "Every Day Should be a Holiday", "Green", "Hard On for Jesus"....they're all incredible! I think my absolute favorite on this album would have to be "Green". It is so enchanting and mellow. I could listen to it for hours. There is a wide variety of sounds on this album. Fast, slow, heavy, soft...you name it. The Dandy Warhols have done it. Don't miss this album.

The Dandy Warhols' fourth album arrives with a cover that melds Sticky Fingers and The Velvet Underground and Nico. One therefore assumes that leader Courtney Taylor-Taylor's claim that predecessor Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia was "the last classic rock album" was a bit tongue-in-cheek. (Actually, one had assumed that already.) Reversing rock's usual guitars-front-keyboards-as-filigree, Monkey House takes the Dandys into a challenging sphere while remaining undeniably organic sounding. The band and co-producers Nick Rhodes (Duran Duran and Tony Visconti (Low, Electric Warrior) have built elaborate but never stifling arrangements of these songs--check out the way guest Nile Rodgers's rhythm guitar part subtly funks up the last minute of "Scientist," or how the group makes the pulsing "(You Come In) Burned" perhaps the best yet of its trademark trancelike album closers. Taylor-Taylor continues to display growing self-knowledge in his "words of comic wisdom": "I Am Sound" isn't a declaration of aural omniscience, but a simple affirmation of OK-ness, while "The Last High" dissects the end of a high-style love affair. Miss this and miss one of the year's finest rock & roll records. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Welcome to the Mediocre House.......2007-01-30

I was expecting more of 13 tales from urban bohemia, and that is not what this album is. Actually, its more of a dance album than a rock n roll album. 13 tales is one of my favorite albums of all time because of the obvious influences of some of my favorite old singers/songwriters (Mick Jagger, Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Lou Reed), but with monkey house, they clearly did not have the same influences or even the same creative force which made 13 tales so memorable and varied. Basically, you can tell that the guy who produced Duran Duran albums had a large say in the production of this album and I find that sad. I do really like Plan A, though, and I listen to it about 10 times in a row and sing along then take the album off. I would not recomend this album unless you want some 80s sounding synth-pop to dance around to. But if you don't have 13 tales, get it quick.

3 out of 5 stars A Different Dandy Album.......2007-01-29

Make no mistake about it, this is different from 13 Tales and Come Down, and sometimes change is both good and bad. The songs "The Last High" and "We Used to Be Friends" are two of my favorite tracks in any kind of music. "The Last High" is a trippy, but undeniably catchy song, one of my all-time favs. While "Friends" is just a great "hook-driven" rock song. "Plan A", and "Heavenly" are the other good songs on this album while "Rock Bottom" is decent. The Dandies have lightened up a bit as the guitar is not as heavy and the keyboards have become more of a focal point. I loved 13 Tales and Come Down as albums, but this one just isn't as good overall as those two. This one has great individual songs, but not enough other material to make this a great album. This is a decent album, but not great. Its one of those CD's that you just listen to a several songs then change the CD. I'd suggest just buying or downloading those 5 good tracks and the rest you can skip over.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is a Must Have!.......2006-10-01

I bought this cd today, and was listening to it in the car. It made me want to pull the car over, get out, and Dance!!!! I absolutely Love it!

4 out of 5 stars I Try to Live on Science Alone.......2006-08-21

As a Dandy Warhol newcomer, I was pleased to find that MONKEY HOUSE displayed none of the weaknesses of ODDITORIUM. In fact, some of this CD's strongest tracks suggest the mid-1970s work of David Bowie. And that's a very good thing, as it means there are bona-fide quality songs here. (BTW, Bowie apparently asked the group to open for one of his tours in 2003, the year this project came out. Coincidence?)

This album is a tribute to a Kurt Vonnegut short story collection, but one needn't be familiar with that author to recognize how excellent some of the pop herein is. It's laid-back, catchy, and sometimes stupidly goofy, as with the song "I Am a Scientist." ("I am a scientist... I try to live on science alone..." [repeat many times]).

Don't get me wrong; this isn't a perfect album; in fact, only five of its songs are good, but those five are very, VERY good indeed. (For the record, they are "We Used to Be Friends," the afore-mentioned science song, "The Dandy Warhols Love Almost Everyone," "The Last High," and "I Am Sound.")

4 out of 5 stars Definately needs to be reissued. This album rocks........2000-04-10

What do you get if you cross Lou Reed and Blur: this album. The Dandys sound like a bunch of unapologetic junkies and their music has a sarcastic mellow feel to it. This combination works well. "Lou Weed" is a great parody, and a great song at that. "The Coffee and Tea Wrecks" is a classic. It is kind of stupid happy with a thick sound from a fuzzy bass line and layered vocals. Definately a fun album.

5 out of 5 stars One of My Favorite Albums.......1999-04-24

I bought Dandys Rule OK after I had owned ...The Dandy Warhols Come Down for about 5 months. Although I could not get over how good Come Down was, Dandys Rule OK is even better. Among all of the albums that I own, this is one of my favorites. Some of the best songs are "(Tony, This Song is Called) Lou Weed", "Nothin' To Do", "Dick", and the unbelievable epic "It's a Fast-Driving Rave-Up With the Dandy Warhols Sixteen Minutes".

5 out of 5 stars Rock me Dandy Warhols.......1999-01-11

This CD reflects the amazing Portland music scene and the Dandy Warhols talent. The Dandy Warhols continue to amaze me at each show I attend.

4 out of 5 stars Actually better than the second album.......1998-11-15

I had the "...come down" album and liked it OK, but I saw this one used for a buck fifty so what the he-he-heck, picked it up. I was surprised. I'm not sure what the label genealogy of this band is, but it's easy to understand why Capitol gave "...come down", the follow up, such a big media push. "...rule: OK!" rocks. Big, singeing guitar noise and production lace this surprisingly diverse record, rooting the band to a planet that you feel sure you can find your way back to as you trip across the sonic space they traverse. One very interesting thing is the baldness of it's borrowing: the band wears it's influences on it's bicep while neatly avoiding abject plagarism. From Lou Reed to REM to Spaceman 3 to Neil Young to Echo and the Bunnymen, even Ultra Vivid Scene, you wonder if the songwriter in this band wasn't sneaking into your room and listening to your record collection. It may be a little long, but chalk that up to youthful exuberence and a wide storehouse of material. Where the Warhols end up, nobody can say, but where they started from is pretty durn cool.

5 out of 5 stars Dandy's Rule! OK?.......1998-05-15

When one thinks of musicals from Hollywood's golden age, the initials MGM come almost instantly to mind. Indeed when veteran song-and-dance man George M. Cohan was negotiating a film based on his colorful life story, his first choice was Metro--until a falling out with studio chief Louis B. Mayer. But L.B.'s loss eventually became Warner Brothers'--and film history's--gain when the Burbank studio's Cohan musical became a massive, patriotic hit in the opening months of World War II. As chronicled in this vibrantly restored, first-ever complete soundtrack for the film, it was a compelling twist of fate. James Cagney turns in one of the screen's most ostensibly unlikely--and ultimately indelible--musical performances (netting him his only Best Actor Oscar ®), teaming with studio music director Roy Heindorf to update Cohan's once-quaint turn-of the-century patriotic ditties ("You're a Grand Old Flag," "Over There," "Yankee Doodle Boy") and infectious vaudevillian chestnuts ("Give My Regards to Broadway," "Harrigan") with bracing dollops of the studio's '40s orchestral sass--and, just months after Pearl Harbor, some crucial historical parallels. Also included are four bonus tracks that remarkably survived the film's preproduction, including an outtake of "You Remind Me of My Mother" and voice-and-piano-only rehearsal versions of "Give My Regards to Broadway" and "You're a Grand Old Flag" that further underscore Cagney's deceptively effortless ability to sell a song despite his limited musical gifts. It's a long overdue showcase for a true American film musical gem. --Jerry McCulley

I am so very glad I bought this CD. I own the DVD of "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and watch it all the time, so I almost didn't buy this, wondering if I really needed yet another CD.

Well, thank God I didn't pay any attention to that dumb idea!

If you love "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and Cagney, you just have to buy this soundtrack. It's like being able to take the movie with you anywhere ... it's not just the songs - as others have said - but also includes bits of Cagney's voice-overs, even the tap-dancing from the end of "Little Johnny Jones." And since the audio system in my car is better than my TV's, it all seemed even bigger, richer and better. (George M. would love that!)

Wonderful, wonderful stuff!

5 out of 5 stars What a find!!.......2003-06-15

I haven't been able to see this movie on TV since Turner bought it (don't get TCM), but if you've seen the movie several tims, as I have, listening to this CD is very nearly as good as watching it all the way through. (I'm so delighted with it that I'm even willing to forgive TCM for putting a paper ad inside with the disc.)

Monumental effort must have gone into this soundtrack, given the age of the original recordings. The tracks here are crisp, clear, and bright, with no evidence of how long ago they were first put down. The editors were also generous in their inclusion of dialogue that ties some of the tracks together (for example, we hear the man tell Johny Jones to watch for the skyrocket, then we hear the skyrocket as it leads into "Give My Regards to Broadway"). There are a couple of places where the endings are slightly abrupt but this is because, in the movie, the music fades into extended dialogue.

The only bit of dialogue I expected to hear in a song, but didn't, is in "Over There" near the very end of the film, when Cagney/Cohan has fallen in step with the soldiers going off to WWII, as they're singing "Over There", when the soldier nearest him says something like, "What's wrong, old timer, don't know the words?" and Cagney says, "Seems to me I do" and starts singing along. That's minor and pales next to how wonderful the rest of this soundtrack is.

One of the biggest treats on this CD is that we get to hear some of Cagney's tapping, notably in "Give My Regards to Broadway", "You're a Grand Old Flag", and - one of my favorite moments in movie history - when he dances down the White House stairs to "Yankee Doodle" near the end).

The outtake is not a humorous one, simply a track they decided not to use. It and the rehearsal tracks are all just the performers voices with piano accompaniment. I especially enjoyed hearing Cagney rehearsing "You're a Grand Old Flag".

If you like Cagney, if you like Cohan's music, if you like movies "the way they used to make them", or if you're not ashamed to get a little choked up with patriotism once in a while, you will not be disappointed in this CD!

5 out of 5 stars A Soundtrack Every American Should Own.......2002-09-23

Finally! If you own that Hollywood Soundstage abomination of the "Yankee Doodle Dandy" soundtrack you can finally pitch it. Here is the real article. Rhino (Turner Classic Movies Music) lovingly restored the music from the beloved "Yankee Doodle Dandy" motion picture starring James Cagney. This soundtrack sounds astonishing considering it's 60 years old. It's very obvious some loving care was taken in it's production for which we all should be greatful. The liner notes also are great with informative text and wonderful photos from the movie. The marvelous George M. Cohan songs gives one goosebumps and bring tears to the eyes. We all need this type of patriotic pep rally, especially in these tough times. As I've said, this soundtrack belongs in every American's home just as much as that "Grand Old Flag"! I believe there are plans to release the movie on DVD, hopefully soon.

In Dig!, the hilarious and sometimes painful documentary that won the 2004 Sundance Grand Jury Prize, the Dandy Warhols matter-of-factly describe themselves the most well-adjusted band in America. While its true that in contrast to the remarkable chaos that surrounds rivals the Brian Jonestown Massacre, the Portland, Oregon group's propensity for onstage nudity and offstage decadence does seem somewhat tame, listening to its fifth album, Odditorium or Warlords of Mars, suggests they are still rock 'n' roll animals at heart: Thrusting through the sexy riffs of "Smoke It;" Reveling in the sheer horniness of ready-for-Vegas single, "All The Money or the Simple Life Honey;" Or simply floating above the ground with a clutch of space-rock jams that flashback to 1995's trippy Dandy's Rule OK? --Aidin Vaziri

4 out of 5 stars Some of the best -- and worst -- of the Dandys.......2007-03-08

On their earliest albums, the Dandys demonstrated that they could do two things really well: write insanely catchy, hook-filled, 3-minute rock/pop songs [eg, "As Cool as Kim Deal"], and do very long, atmospheric, repetitive, 10-minute minimalist jams ["Pete International Airport."] A lot of people seem to have first noticed the Dandys with "13 Tales" and "Monkey House," in which they seemed to be consciously making their bid for rock super-stardom by dropping the long songs and focusing on the short pop things.

Here, the Dandys seem to take a step back and a step forward at the same time. They try to take everything they've learned about making music over the last 10 years, and re-apply it to what they did in the beginning: combining short, hook-filled pop with more challenging and difficult soundscapes. The result is mixed, but really interesting. There are songs on this CD that I am totally crazy about and can't stop listening to: "Easy" for example: even though I can't understand a word that he's saying, the groove and the progression of the song are just irresistable. Then there are some OK "hit singles," like "All the Money or the Simple Life Honey." There is some great melancholia -- "Everyone is Totally Insane" and "Holding Me Up" are both great songs that happen to be somewhat grim. And I actually like "Love is the New Feel Awful."

Then there is a lot of stuff that does not do anything for me. I don't listen to "Smoke it" or "The New Country or "Down Like Disco."

Even though every single song on this CD is not a success, there really is some great music here, and I can't wait to hear what the Dandys do next.

4 out of 5 stars Amongst the mess, there are a lot of good songs here .......2006-10-20

The Dandy Warhols' album, Odditorium or Warlords of Mars, is a release where the band throws everything at the wall to see what will stick. Sporting a very over the top production, the band writes songs in a variety of genres and the band clearly wear their influences on their sleeve. Listening to the album as a whole is quite a challenge as you'll dig one song and the next one will come on and you'll be saying, "What is this?" However, if you cut out the fat, most notably several minutes off the two longest tracks, this is a pretty good album. When the band stay in their element on the catchy "Down Like Disco", the rave-up "The New Country", the dreamlike "Everyone Is Totally Insane", or the killer rocker "Smoke It", they shine like the sun. And even though tunes like "Holding Me Up" and "Easy" are a little long, there are enough hooks to keep them interesting. Even the short little ditty, "Did You Make a Song with Otis", is pretty cool. Where the album slips is when they attempt to write a bombastic epic. "Love is the New Feel Awful" starts out as a cool pop song but becomes very repetitive and that goes double for the closer "A Loan Tonight", which drags on for 12 excruciating minutes. Also worth noting is that "There Is Only This Time" sounds way too much like Pink Floyd. All told, the highs clearly outweigh the lows on Odditorium or Warlords of Mars and it's worth checking out.

4 out of 5 stars Well I like it!.......2006-09-23

I put off getting this for so long since I'd read all the whining reviews about long songs and lack of tunes, etc. Come on people! This is a great album! If you've got the first two Dandy albums it's somewhat like a return, only with a whole load of Bohemian-Monkey attitude in the bag! Yeah, some songs are long but it's all about vibe and feel - this hangs together and it works. Except for the last song which is pants. Still - you can't have it all can you!

1 out of 5 stars I've given it time..........2006-08-17

So I've given this album a LONG time to sink in.

I finally came back to it on a few of my recent long car trips when I had some time to really focus on an album.

I have this to say: "Ouch."

I would have been happy with an album 1/2 as good as "Thirteen Tales" or 1/3 as good as "Monkey House," but it was not to be.

I still wouldn't move it from #1 on my list of "Biggest Disappointments of 2005."

3 out of 5 stars T.T.H. (or, Trying Too Hard).......2006-08-07

I've got every reason to like the Dandy Warhols. They're a hometown band, they play catchy pop, and they have interestingly original arrangements and instrumentation. Heck, they even named their CD something that a hardcore Edgar Rice Burroughs reader like me can appreciate.

So what gives? Well, we all know people who ARE funny, and then there are the people who try too hard to be funny. The effort shows, and it's not helpful. My guess is that the Dandy Warhols are trying too hard to be hip. On virtually every track, the effort to be ironic and hip is showing. It starts with the unfunny Bill Kurtis intro and continues through the trip-hopped entirety of the project.

Indulgent and inspired is good. But just plain old indulgent? Bad. But hey, it's not like the whole CD is a wash; "All The Money Or The Simple Life Honey" is a good tune. There's some nice samples one could pluck from here if one was so inclined. And plus, lots of the songs have funny names. So, hometown guy says three stars... though you may not be so charitable.

this cd set is definately worth the money spent. i haven't heard some of the music before but was willing to give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars Great Patriotic Music.......2007-02-21

Beautiful music perfect for feeling patriotic. Received CD promptly and in great condition.

4 out of 5 stars A good choice of tunes with good quality.......2005-06-30

If you like military tunes and marches, this 2-CD is a good choice. The orchestration is good, it is well played and the quality of recording is good. If you like this kind of music, it is a good choice to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!!.......2003-08-11

I have the CD at home and the songs sound fabulous. I've heard the Houston Symphony's version of the Star Spangled Banner many times on TV as this anthem has been used at sign-off (when this was happening). It's as powerful a version you'll hear. Probably the finest patriotic music CD you can find out there.

5 out of 5 stars Best Patriotic Music I've Found.......2001-09-20

Loved the CD! I am buying it to use with a Musical Freestyle Ride for a Quadrille. A horse oriented endeaver. The music will be perfect to bring positive patriotism to fairs and fund raisers for NYC.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Gould: the Genius of Recorded Music!.......2005-01-31

Gould was playing Schoenberg in the 1950s--just shortly after the composer's death. He realizes the Op. 11 pieces in a very late-Brahmsian manner, in keeping with his gestalt of turn-of-the-century Modern music, viz., Brahms, Strauss, Scriabin, Schoenberg, Hindemith, et al.

The Op. 25 Suite is an exquisite refraction of a Bach French Suite--but done in Schoenberg's 12-tone form. Here Gould plays Schoenberg as he does Bach!

Gould's realization of Schoenberg's Piano Concerto is very secco (dry), and intentionally miked very closely: i.e., the recording was made with microphones placed close to the performers, rather than way back out in the audience area of a hall. This was Gould's idea, and the results are outstanding: the best Schoenberg Piano Concerto available--pace, Uchida and Brendel, et al.

Gould's Pierrot is his first attempt at conducting, and one wishes he had completed it and done more. In the end, Gould conducted Wagner's Siegfried Idyll with outstanding results.

This is a great set.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive interpretation of Schoenberg piano works.......2003-12-27

While other pianists dabbled at these fine pieces, none other than Glenn Gould provides the definitive interpretation of Schoenberg's piano works. Thoroughly studied, Gould presents the serialism clearly and presents the dimensions of the revolutionary works.

By detaching yourself from the tonality of traditional tonal music, and immersing in the world of Schoenberg, the shape and lines of the music will gradually become clear. Gould is perhaps the greatest advocate and messenger of Schoenberg's distinct language.

5 out of 5 stars Keep listening.......2000-09-13

These are difficult pieces for me. They require concentrated listening, and challenge my understanding of music. Sometimes, I don't like what I hear, and other times, it's just too much work to listen to very much of this. However, when I am able to devote some time to listening with an understanding mind, I am amply rewarded. I have listened to this CD for several years and I will probably never understand this music. I do enjoy listening and learning from it, though. I am thankful that someone as talented as Glenn Gould has interpreted these pieces. If you are interested in one of the most important composers of the twentieth century, or one of the greatest legends of the keyboard, this CD will interest you. To paraphrase what Moby wrote on his CD, Animal Rights, "Please listen to this CD completely at least once."

4 out of 5 stars The "least dry" Schoenberg ever.......1999-11-10

I believe wholeheartedly that, for the uninitiated, this disc is difficult to truly appreciate without having heard other pianists attempt these pieces (e.g., Pollini). To enjoy listening to Schoenberg necessitates a certain familiarity with prolonged "dissonance", just like strong coffee or unfiltered beer--it takes some getting used to. If you're already there, it's not "dissonant", it's "music" (just like other alternate melodic conceptions-raga, gamelan, mbira, partch, etc.), and Gould's passionate readings here display his love for and understanding of the music's heart. Go Glenn.

4 out of 5 stars A Master Pianist Plays His Favorites.......1999-04-08

Schoenberg's rigid mathematics, his triads, his serialism, his tonal abilities, when demonstated through his piano pieces (especially through these piano pieces) allow a pianist with the mechanical ability and inspired play of Glenn Gould the chance to demonstrate how to hear, feel and convey a music that, to many listeners, often reflects, upon fist listen, chaos. But the music on this 2 CD set is not to be listened to merely once. Glenn Gould, master pianist, is playing his favorite works by one of his favorite composers. The Schoenberg basher will hear more chaos than in other recordings of these piano pieces, merely because Gould's sure fingers, his hands, are as revolutionary as the music he is playing.
