Ry Cooder's name has helped bring attention to this session, but it's the veteran Cuban son musicians who make this album really special. Reminiscent of Ellington in its scope and sense of hushed romanticism, Buena Vista Social Club is that rare meld of quietude and intensity; while the players sound laid-back, they're putting forth very alive music, a reminder that aging doesn't mean taking to bed. Barbarito Torres's laoud solo on "El Cuarto de Tula" is both more blinding and more tasteful than any guitar showcase on any recent rock album; a quote from "Stormy Weather" and some very distinct parallels to Hawaiian styles remind us of why it's called "world music." --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:
Nice cuban music.......2007-03-15
I should add that I speak Spanish fairly well and therefore understand the lyrics, and am generally an enthusiast of Hispanic culture and music. The story of this worthy project and how this was recorded are interesting and I suspect some reviewers are moved more by sentiment than just on the merits of the music, some of which seems very middle-of-the-road to me, albeit pleasant enough for casual listening.

For those of you who have never listened to this style of music, don't just listen to it once as you could compare it to the first 3 olives you have ever eaten.
The first one shocks your taste with a layered complexity that is both sharp and mellow, leaving you with a look on your face that says "what just happened?".
The second takes you back to the memory of your first taste, and enjoying re-living the sensation, you start looking for more.
The third confirms your interests and instils an infatuation with something unique, powerful, and good for the heart and soul, that will be played over and over again.
Absolutely fantastic!.......2007-01-11

Sigo Siendo Yo (Still Being Me) is not only the title of Marc Anthony's new hits collection, it's also a reaffirmation of his status as one of Spanish-language music's preeminent voices. The stirring set is balanced with sweeping ballads ("Ahora Quien," "Se Esfuma Tu Amor") and Anthony's true forte--scorching salsa numbers ("Valio La Pena," Tu Amor Me Hace Bien"). Still, everything is vividly enhanced by Anthony's astonshing vocal range. The disc's two new songs are a toss up: "Lo Que No Di" is overblown, overwrought and ponderous. In other words, a likely theme song for some future telenovela. First single "Que Precio Tiene El Cielo" is much better, highlighted by a sweet, slowly building salsa rhythm. Some hits--"Dimelo," "Muy Dentro De Mi"--are equally familiar in their English-language versions but benefit from richer performances en espanol--usually the case with Anthony's material. Also included--perhaps as a sweet bit of foresight--is "No Me Ames," Anthony's 1999 duet with future wife Jennifer Lopez. --Joey GuerraCustomer Reviews:

"The rhythm is gonna get you" is the tag line of one of Gloria Estefan's biggest hits, but it could also serve as the mantra for the Cuban-born singer's road to the top of the charts. Estefan's forte is middle-of-the-road pop, but all of her upbeat hits are fueled by driving Latin percussion, the feature that set Estefan's music apart from the rest of the flyaway pop of the 1980s and early '90s. Greatest Hits intersperses those great dance hits--"Conga," "1,2,3," "Get on Your Feet," and, of course, "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You," with sweet ballads such as "Words Get in the Way," "Anything for You," and "Don't Wanna Lose You." This set also includes "Coming Out of the Dark," Estefan's triumphant comeback hit following her 1990 career-threatening tour-bus accident. --Daniel DurchholzCustomer Reviews:

This cd has some fantastic songs on it. It truly shows the wide array of hits she has accumulated over the years. There are the fun latin inspired boppy songs, and there are the ballads she is well known for too. I love both and that's what makes this a great cd - the fact that there is a good mix.
One of her best songs ever (in my mind) is When I See You Smile. That's a stunning ballad and it's my favourite of hers. There is also Anything For You and Words Get In The Way. For faster songs, there is the cool Rythm Is Gonna Get You and Go Away. It's very hard to pick what song I like more when she has so many. This is just a few of her best and she's probably overdue to have another cd like this released because she has done some more excellent cds lately (underrated ones) and her catalogue is always expanding. I love this cd and still listen to it often.

This album starts off on a high and energetic note with "Se Me Sigue Olvidando." I love the piano intro! It only gets better from there. Some of his most well-loved salsa tunes are front and center on this CD. They include "Te Conozco Bien," "Nadie Como Ella," and "Te Amare." There is also an achingly beautiful ballad in "Hasta Ayer." If anything, Marc needs to record more romantic ballads. I can guarantee you, that if he doesn't break your heart with his devestatingly beautiful vocals, the guitar riffs will melt even the iciest heart. Many of these songs are also featured on "Desde El Principio," a retrospective of Marc's great salsa career.

Singer/songwriter Marc Anthony gets back to the basics here, rewarding his main fanbase by recording salsa versions of the Spanish-language pop ballads on his Amar sin Mentiras CD. Beyond "Lamento Borincano," the old folk-salsa standard by the legendary Puerto Rican songwriter Rafael Hernandez, there isn't anything new. The other seven tracks are simply horn-fueled and percussion heavy retakes. But even those who already have Amar can find new juice here. Valio La Pena vibrates with new sonic urgency as Anthony describes the risks sometimes necessary in finding romantic happiness. The pop version of "Ahora Quien" was dramatic and anthemic. Here, it's speeded up and filled out with melodic pianos and horns. Even "Escapemonos," the tepid duet with actress/singer Jennifer Lopez, gets a recharge in the salsa version thanks to percolating percussions. Anthony's strength is his strong, plaintive vocals. On ballads he's ok, but it's in fiery salsa tunes where the music and the vocals really complement each other. Did we really need two Anthony CDs? Probably not, but his hardcore salsa fans will appreciate the extra effort. --Ramiro BurrCustomer Reviews:

Valio is a rearrangement of some of the songs of Amar sin Mentiras. And it definitely has the feeling of an afterthought.
While it is a pretty decent salsa album (albeit brief), it is simply not in the class of his other three salsa CD's, Todo a su Tiempo, Contra la Corriente, and especially, Libre. The arrangements are standard competent rather than thorougly innovative and unique as were the older ones.

Gloria Estefan may have fallen out of commercial favor with English-speaking audiences over the past several years, but her musical output has hardly reflected a change. It's particularly true of her Spanish-language recordings, on which she has continually evolved and explored new, diverse sounds. Amor y Suerte--Exitos Romanticos chronicles that impressive path, culling some of Estefan's best work from the past decade. Notable are a trio of duets that find the Cuban diva holding her own against the formidable voices of Alejandro Fernandez ("En el Jardin"), Jon Secada ("Por Amor") and Jose Feliciano ("Tengo Que Decirte Algo"). The compilation also features "Hoy" and "Tu Fotografia," two stellar singles from Estefan's unjustly overlooked Unwrapped album. Lush production values and Estefan's plaintive-yet-longing delivery unify the entire project. It ends with "Ay, Ay, Ay Amor," a new track that pulses to a rousing salsa-dance beat and signifies another exciting direction for Latin-pop's premiere songstress. --Joey GuerraCustomer Reviews:

Sets the Ideal Romantic Mood (For the Most Part).......2004-11-22
Selections included that stem from her record-breaking "Mi Tierra (My Homeland)," album are instant highlights. "Con Los Años Que Me Quedan (With The Years I Have Left), which she wrote with her husband Emilio, finds her smooth-as-silk vocals accented throughout by an enchanting Spanish guitar solo that is as heart-stirring as ever. The guitar playing is impressive likewise on "Hablas De Mi (You Talk About Me)," and "Mi Buen Amor (My Good Love)" remains an elegant performance ripe to play at weddings.
Two recent #1 hits on Spanish radio, "Hoy" and "Tu Fotografia," Gian Marco's Spanish interpretations of Estefan's own lyrics in "Wrapped" and "Your Picture," two magnificent tracks from 2003's criminally ignored "Unwrapped," are splendid inclusions. The former passionate and slow-burning and the latter melancholic with soaring vocals, it is easy to see why they put her on the top of the charts. However, it must be pointed out that "Tu Fotografia" is a cathartic reflection on the death of a loved one - hardly romantic subject matter.
Finding inclusion for the first time on an Estefan disc are duets with Jon Secada, and Alejandro Fernandez. Secada, who notably penned Estefan's 1992 smash "I See Your Smile," sounds excellent alongside his friend and contemporary on "Por Amor (For Love)," originally included on his 2002 album "Amanacer." "En El Jardin (In the Garden)," which stems from Fernandez's 1997 "Me Estoy Enamorando" album, is similarly rhythmic and vibrant. "No Pretendo (I Don't Try)," the Spanish interpretation of "Steal Your Heart," the arguable highlight of 1996's "Destiny" album, also makes its first album appearance. In addition, "Ay Ay Ay Amor," a rapturous newly recorded salsa number, concludes the disc with a loud bang.
Though a superb compilation, "Amor y Suerte" still falters. Notably, "Mas Alla (Beyond)," a yearning ballad she performed for the Pope from her 1995 "Abriendo Puertas (Opening Doors)" album, is missed. Also, "No Me Dejes De Querer (Don't Ever Stop Loving Me)," a massive hit from 2000's "Alma Caribeña (Caribbean Soul)" would have been more appropriate than "Por Un Beso (For a Kiss)" from the same album, where she bitterly condemns her former love for his betrayal. Likewise, the inclusion of the limited edition DVD is only validated by its salsa version of "Hoy" performed for AOL.
When all is said and done, however, a purchase of "Amor y Suerte" is a wise move if you're interested in having previously obscure material from Estefan on one disc along with hits and fine album tracks that, for the most part, set the ideal romantic mood.

A remarkable album - loved by this Gringo, too!.......2003-10-20
In all seriousness, CONTRA LA CORRIENTE (which a Spanish-speaking friend translated for me as "Against the Flow") has become one of my favorite albums. It is a fine example of excellent composition, performance, and engineering, making for one outstanding sonic experience. Marc Anthony's album falls within the "Latin Music" catagory (of course), but his songs are musically interesting enough to transcend that label. His vocal delivery is passionate and expressive enough to evoke emotions in me, and I don't even know what he's singing about! (Special kudos to his trio of backup vocalists - you guys are so tight in your harmonies that you grabbed my attention and are still my favorite aspect of the album.)
Mr. Anthony surrounded himself with excellent musicians and every performance from the horns to the piano to the multiple percussionists play in tight collaboration and yet are easily distinguishable from each other. One can recognize the extraordinary audio engineering from this as well, as every instrument and vocal is in perfect balance with everything else - nothing draws attention to itself, it only adds to the ensemble. This makes for enjoyable repeat listens as one can make new discoveries with subsequent spins.
With the possibe exception of the final track (where the music style changes from straight Latin to a pseudo-latin-pop), there are no "throw-away" pieces. Each song on CONTRA LA CORRIENTE is distinct and worthwhile, therefore you'll be getting your money's worth with this album. One additional bonus: because this is not a traditional "pop" album, it's not going out of style any time soon.
CONTRA LA CORRIENTE gets my highest recommendation for those seeking an excellent album, regardless of any "Latino" label. If you only own one Spanish-language album, you'd do very well with CONTRA LA CORRIENTE. CONTRA LA CORRIENTE also stands up to the scrutiny of my Latino friends, with many stating this album is a favorite lyrically as well as musically. In short, this one wears well on everybody!

Some of their most popular and well-loved songs are featured on "Lo Esencial DLG" ("The Essential DLG"). This includes their remake of the popular Wilfredo Vargas song, "La Quiero a Morir" ("I Love Her to Death"), complete with freestyle raps and Huey wailing like there's no tomorrow. Huey's voice is comparable to young Michael Jackson (I am talking pre-"Thriller", post Jackson 5). They also do remakes of "Juliana" (with help from salsa great Cuco Valoy), "Volvere," "No Morira (No Matter What)," "La Soledad (The Loneliness)," and "Me Va Extrañar (Unchained My Heart)." The songs featured, here, are basically a sample from the three albums the group released (DLG, Swing On!, and Gotcha!).
I guarantee you that this album will get you up and dancing, even if you have never taken a salsa dancing class in your life. It just makes you wonder where these guys could be, today, if they had stayed together.

In the middle of the techno revolution, it was a bit of a risky move for Gloria Estefan to release Gloria!, an album of pure, unadulterated disco that sounds as if it could have been recorded two decades earlier. The risk paid off, though, because the album turned out to be one of her best--a nonstop dance party that keeps cooking through beat-heavy thumpers such as "Heaven's What I Feel," "Oye," and "I Just Wanna Be Happy"--the latter two bring in some of the Latin elements of her Miami Sound Machine days. Two concessions to current music trends include a duet with Wyclef Jean on "Don't Release Me" and the politically charged lyrics of "Cuba Libre" that cause you to think while you dance. --Daniel DurchholzCustomer Reviews:
Her Rhythm's Gonna Get You..........2007-05-13
fast forward.......2007-01-04
One wonders how a project like this gets started.
Were Gloria and Emilio lounging around the fireplace one night when ...
Gloria: ¿Amor?
Emilio: Yes, mi Gloria?
Gloria: I've been thinking. I think we need to do a dance album.
Emilio: Hmm ... We've never done anything like that, mi vida.
Gloria: I know. But I think I have a dance album in me.
Emilio: I see, mi estrella. Let me make some phone calls.
Amazingly, it works. Against all odds, one might add.
Gloria thumps through this pulse-rattling, no-breathers-allowed collection of fifteen dance tunes as though her middle name were Janet Jackson. Amazingly, there's not a loser among them. She even manages to get enough Latin rhythm and language into the mix to make it sound like authentic Gloria.
All of which reminds one that she was someone's first pick for the musical 'Evita', giving place to Madonna in the end. And makes one wonder whether there's anything Gloria cannot, would not do with the right motivation and Emilio's quality production to make sure it flies high.
Hmm ...
Gloria Returns to the Dancefloor...with winning results!.......2006-12-05
The record is solid & flows as a cohesive unit due in part to Gloria's veteran production crew. Kike Santander, Lawrence Dermer, Pablo Flores, & Gloria's own husband/manager, Emilio Estefan all guide Gloria's lush vocals through the walls of sound they construct.
And what walls. Opening on the strong presence of the breezy "Heaven's What I Feel", Gloria sahsays through majority of the record, keeping the tempo upbeat, barring a momentary mid-tempo rest with "Touched By An Angel". The listener will barely be able to catch a breath before, or after that point, & joyfully so.
The highlights here are endless, ones that find Gloria's voice in charismatic, soaring form on the sparkling "Don't Let This Moment End" & spunky Wyclef Jean duet "Don't Release Me". The latter would be echoed by both Wyclef & Shakira several years later on her own "Hips Don't Lie" cut. "Oye" is smoking number reminiscent of "Conga", but leaves little to the imagination with it's sultry, but ever classy come-on's. "Real Woman", an excellent production showcase with amazing synth & authentic drum programming, is lush & fun. You can almost hear Gloria grinning here.
"Feelin'" is an upbeat & romantic ode to couples who first find love. Again, Gloria's voice is rich, textured, & all at once impassioned here. It proves that while the dance soundscapes are mighty, it is Gloria's voice that gives them true life & soul.
Even the remixes are full of inventive fire, rather than just recycling the same tired ideas. The "Don't Release Me" edit is quite colorful & full of romantic spark from both Gloria & Wyclef equally.
Sadly, this record carried on the commercial decline of the "only platinum" success of 1996's "Destiny", only achieving gold status. That is a shame, because "Gloria!" was another fine addition to discography of Estefan, though it did find life (rightfully so) within the dance charts. Either way, if you are looking for a record that is dancy, romantic, & fun, with soul..."Gloria!" is it. Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2006-11-18
Great change of pace for her :-).......2006-08-18
There is the first release Heaven's What I Feel (it was used in a movie - I can't remember which one, but it's a great dance number). The sexy Real Woman. That song is totally hot. Oye is cool - it has the latin flavour that she's known for and it's fun, then there is my absolute favourite song on this cd called Don't Let This Moment End. It's a long song that is so catchy and brilliant. Lastly, the other most outstanding song (even though they are all good) is Touched By An Angel. It's a fun and happy song.
The reviewer below said that all the songs sound the same; - it's not even close to the truth. While a lot of the songs have the same beat, each is still unique, upbeat and totally danceable. I love all of her cd's, but I really like this change of pace. It may have been a bit of a risk for her, but she has done so well and I would love it if she could pull off another album just as good as this. I hope everyone loves it as much as I do.
