"Casa" is the Portuguese word for "house." It's also the title of this melodic and moving tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim by the Oscar® and Grammy award-winning pianist-composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, Brazilian cellist Jaques Morelenbaum, and his vocalist wife, Paula. The Morelenbaums, who cofounded Quarteto Jobim-Morelenbaum, both worked with the maestro, and almost all of the tracks here were recorded in Jobim's Rio home. The CD contains fluid and florid renditions of bossa nova-era classics from the Jobim canon, from "Amor em Paz"--with Jobim's son Paulo on guitar--and "Bonita" to "Vivo Sonhando." It also unveils rare songs like "Chanson pour Michelle," a short and sweet composition written for a soap opera, and a never-before-heard work, "Tema para Ana," an intimate piano/cello duet. Sakamoto's spare and splendid pianisms ring from Jobim's piano. Morelenbaum's singing cello tones complement his wife's angelic Portuguese and English vocals. I got this fine cd last year in my first time in Buenos Aires.. though my trip was for widenning my musical horizons.. what can I said that has not been adequately commented by more knowledable reviewers than I?.. the music is serene, celestial, non-strident...he piano, the cello and that voice!! you know you are prividledged in life to have a chance to comtemplate on this type of beauty... whatever scars we have in the soul and body, take a moment to soothe yourself..

Gentle Magic to Free Your Soul.......2007-03-28

I just love love love this CD. Everything about it is so artfully rendered, it takes my soul away to gently float free in a most beautiful place. Ms. Morelenbaun has a voice that, of all female vocals in the world, is often my most favorite to hear. Virtually no vibrato, just clean and clear exquisite and delicate classic femininity. Mr. Morelenbaum, Mr. Sakamoto and all supporting musicians provide the most sensitively interwoven instrumental skills that there could ever be; they perfectly ride, complement and contribute to the magical musical moment that is always now, in flowing pieces such as these. Of course, the ineffably beautiful heart and soul of the basic songs to start with are indispensible (thank you now and forever, o-most revered JC Jobim!). Honestly, this CD places in my top 10 of all time, especially now, in my more relaxed and gentle mature years... ;)

I came by the Morelenbaums by 'A Day in New york'. It was love at first
sound. I checked out to see if anything else was available. I found 'Casa'
and immediately ordered it. It has been in my CD player since I got it.
This from a Classical music buff and a college music degree. This music
defies description (I do like bossa nova and Jobim especially). This group is so together, it sounds like the members know exactly what each
other is thinking. It is all so right that it appears precision and class
like this is not possible. Paula's voice has a simple (without vibrato) beauty that is mesmerizing. The arrangements are exquisite. The Cello and piano never over-do and the whole is something you must hear to believe. I can only add to this - GET IT!!

Absolutely fabulous renditions of Jobim. Paula's voice is so pure and
gentle, along with Jacques' cello gliding through the sketches. And the
pianist Sakamoto is perfect as well. I just love this cd. I quickly
obtained their other Jobim tribute cd "A Day in New York" (the Japanese
enhanced version with 5 bonus tracks), which is even further proof that
there is a musical heaven on earth. So sophistocated, cool, and gentle.
I eagerly await their next release. 5 million stars.

So much to say about this wonderful recording. As I write this, there are 27 reviews posted for Casa and not one of them is less than 4 stars, with the vast majority as 5 stars. That speaks volumes in itself. But the quality of the words and the thought behind them is truly a tribute to Jobim. If we were all lucky enough to have him with us now, the words of these reviews would surely either make him smile or bring tears of joy to his eyes. This truly is music that soothes...reflects...and makes us all appreciate either finding it or being introduced to it by someone. Introduce only your best friends to this, those that would appreciate it as much as you and I do.

I love all the songs in this CD I can't stop playing it. He has such a beautiful voice and in the slow songs he sounds so romantic. I recomend it to anybody that wants to listen to good Mexican music.

Pepe Aguilar, is one of a kind the way he sings makes one feel every word. The heart he puts into his music ( sentimiento ). I love his music, He is the WOW! for singers. Any song Ranchera, Balada, Banda. I have yet to hear a song that will not be done to excellence if he sings it. I Love Pepe.

From the first time I saw the movie El Hijo De Lamberto Quintero to now I've been a Pepe Aguilar fan. It was the song Esta Tristesa Mia which hit the heart profoundly. If you haven't heard this song, it is in one of his albums con Tambora. This CD along with the rest that he has con Mariachi are simply masterpieces and cannot be duplicated. Pepe directs and produces most of his albums, and not even Alejandro Fernandez can do that, nor can he sing con Tambora. I really recommend any of his albums, simply because he is one of the best out there today.

I agree that this CD is wonderful for a person with such a melodic and sweet voice Pepe Aguilar does a wonderful job singing rancheras. BUT in no way is he beter than Vicente Fernandez, the man is THE charro alegre de mexico he has a strong and raspy voice made to sing ONLY rancheras he's a national treasure and can't be surpassed. Oh and by the way, this CD is wonderful, one of my favorites hope this helped you in your selectoin ;)

Pepe Aguilar did it again another great cd a favorite in my list. he proved again that he's better than Vicente & Alejandro Fernandez. a better everything Pepe is the total package a great vocalist director producer and a real charro like his father the great Antonio Aguilar the songs in this cd are very good sung the way only Pepe can.nobody even comes close to his style.I especially liked the song titled "El Zacatecano" because it mentiones Jerez the city were my parents were born i cant wait for his next cd wich wil be a hit too.

Eso si los arreglos musicales de "por una mujer bonita" son muy autenticos eh inovadores... no cabe duda que Pepe esta buscando un estilo propio y bien definido...

Leonard Bernstein occupies a unique position in the music world for his protean, multi-faceted talents. His ability to draw on and absorb every cultural influence made him the ultimate eclectic, yet he eventually forged a style that was unmistakably his own. This record, which includes vocal, choral and instrumental pieces, some never recorded, performed or published, demonstrates that his Jewish heritage played a formative, lasting, decisive role in this process. The earliest, Psalm 148 (sung in English), written when he was 17, is steeped in an ultra-romantics style, especially Wagner's; it hardly contains a hint of the later Bernstein, but its innocent sweetness is infinitely touching. The longest, Halil, is a virtuoso piece for flute with piano and percussion, written 1981 in memory of a 19-year-old Israeli flutist killed 1973 in the Yom Kippur War. Also written for specific occasions and friends are Silhouette for Jennie Tourel's birthday and Three Wedding Dances for the marriage of Adolph Greene and Phyllis Newman. Excerpts from longer works include At My Wedding from Arias and Barcarolles, a description of a young fiddler playing for a wedding that is both funny and affecting, sung in Yiddish, a chorus from the ballet The Dybbuk, a section of Concerto for Orchestra. These, like several sacred selections--prayers, invocations, hymns of thanks and praise for various parts of the Service--are sung in Hebrew. The most substantial is Hashkiveinu, a prayer for peace, commissioned by the Cantor of a New York synagogue, for tenor solo, chorus and organ, featuring call and response, cantorial chanting and very daring harmonies and tonal juxtapositions. Bernstein later recycled some of this material for other, very different compositions, like films and musicals, perhaps indicating that he considered this style the connecting thread of his creative life. I like Placido Domingo very much, and the songs of Agustin Lara sung by Mr. Domingo are great, as also the other songs by M. Teresa Lara, Jorge Casas and Julio Hernandez. I really like this album and have it in my car to listen to it over and over again while driving long distances. I think this was a good purchase and highly recommend it.

Agustin Lara made bright and new, without overdone orchestration. Many songs are from the Suite Espanola, and all are beloved by lovers of the Lara bolero, an emotional journey not to be missed. A new sound for a few, that were known in Mexico as performed by Alejandro Algara, a less known lyric tenor. Very bright, and with less slips in the mix than the A. Lara, Suite Espanola CD by Mr. Domingo, titled Bajo El Cielo Espanol, also a great offering by this dramatic performer. This is really another Domingo that is needed by any fan...Singing his own love of Spanish songs in songs by one of the great historical song writers....A Winner, in my opinion!

On this records, Placido Domingo achieve one of the most refined homages to his musical roots, the zarzuela. He, having touched -and make us touch- some of the highest points of opera, put all his art and heart on the fourteen tracks of this CD. The talented guitarist Joe Diorio has mostly recorded for obscure record companies throughout his career including this set for the completely forgotten Zdenek label. The early-'80s LP features Diorio (who has always had his own sound) in a trio/quartet with other Los Angeles-based musicians: keyboardist Carl Schroeder, bassist Bob Magnusson and drummer Jim Plank. Diorio stretches out on five standards (including Jobim's "Bonita") plus one of his originals, playing some fine post-bop guitar that is often strikingly original.

1) La Isla Bonita- I believe this is an extended version. Very good.
2) Open Your Heart- my all-time favorite Madonna song. This is also an extended version. EXCELLENT!
3) Gambler- I love this cheesy '80s song and I'm glad it was included.
4) Crazy For You- gorgeous ballad. Reminds me of my boyfriend.
5) La Isla Bonita instrumental- a tad boring, but good for karoake

Excellent Remixes Of La Isla Bonita and Open Your Heart .......2005-01-23

I love this CD so much. La Isla Bonita the extended remix from the True Blue album is beautifully remixed and powerful. This remix gives the song so much power. I am glad they included an instrumental version so I can sing to it. She sang this song at the Drowned World Tour beautifully dressed up in black. Open Your Heart is also from the True Blue album and the extended version is breathtaking. It nice and long and such a beautiful song!! She even talks at the end of it for a minute and she sounds so cute. This song also went to #1 in the USA. Gambler is a great fast song by itself and it is very 80's you can recognize it from the sound. Crazy For You is the beautiful slow ballad that went to # 1 in the USA. Crazy For You was sang at then Reinvention Tour. Both songs are from the movie "Vision Quest". I highly recommend this album to Madonna fans you will dance all night to Open Your Heart and Gambler and gracefully move across the dancefloor to La Isla Bonita!!

CD worth picking up .......2004-11-10

I just started collecting these cd remix singles/eps and this one is worth picking up...The LA ISLA BONITA mix is good, but the highlight is the excellent OPEN YOUR HEART mix and getting the original version of CRAZY FOR YOU & GAMBLER (from the movie VISION QUEST) on a MADONNA release..Packaging is the standard jewel case with the classic 45 single sleeve featuring an old school pic of MADONNA during her TRUE BLUE era...for nostolgic,collectible & remix purposes, this is a great MADONNA import single to add to anyone's MADONNA, dance and/or 80'S music collection!
