Viento a Favor is Mexican superstar Alejandro Fernandez's 15th studio disc in as many years as a singer. But he still approaches each project with the urgency and earnestness of a newbie singer. That's what makes each tune a small celebration, an intimate moment of discovery. There are no wasted moments amid the sterling arrangements, some of the best in Fernandez's lush pop repertoire. (He's an equally heralded ranchera singer.) Viento a Favor features tunes written by Leonel Garcia and Noel Schajris (better known as emotive Latin-pop duo Sin Bandera) and Mexican singer Reyli Barba. They're all taken to wuthering heights by Fernandez's stellar vocal range, which goes from hushed whispers to booming intensity. First single "Te Voy a Perder" is an epic romance, and "Amor Gitano," a duet with bilingual diva Beyoncé, expectedly smolders. Closing tune "Cuando Estamos Juntos" is another surprise, an acoustic-flavored ode to simple joy. --Joey GuerraCustomer Reviews:

Alejandro Agonistes may yet have a happy ending, but you wouldn't guess it from this torrent of surrealism and gothic textures. Escovedo's first album since nearly succumbing to hepatitis C and crushing debt in 2003 is the darkest, most mysterious album of his career--a harrowing, poetic soundscape partly the result of producer John Cale's industrial-noir sensibilities, but also Escovedo's own avant-garde punk roots. The difficult trilogy which opens the album moves from arid Arizona (a wasteland where the soul finds nary a drop to drink) to a conversation with a "dear head on the wall" that becomes a negative Zen poem ("The sadness will come / When there is no one") to a cryptic vision of a buck trampling a wandering doe. Writing with his wife, poet Kim Christoff, as well as Chris Stamey and guitarist Jon Dee Graham, Escovedo isn't just confronting his own mortality and the mistakes which plunged him into a nightmare. He's courting a danse macabre for the sounds and poetry he finds there. On "Sacramento and Polk" he surveys a bohemian hell through a "Thorazine haze," while the Princely groove of "Take Your Place" only seems like a discordant funk party until the lyrics sink in: "I'm going down, down, down / There's nothing here." Escovedo's voice has weathered the physical ravages, caressing all the Mexican nuances out of the synth- and cello-sweetened "Evita's Lullaby" and breaking beautifully on the country ballad "Died a Little Today," which, like each of these emotionally concentrated tracks, is as literal as it is elusive. --Roy KastenCustomer Reviews:

The Boxing Mirror, produced by John Cale, has some excellent songs that rock as much as anything AE has ever done - Arizona and Sacramento & Polk come to mind immediately. The hooks are in you real fast and I listened to Sac & Polk many times at AE's website totally mesmerized by the big raunchy sound. But, will this disk survive in the heavy rotation of my CD changer staying for months like the Buick MacKane and True Believers CD's - probably not.
For fans of John Cale, I think they will love this disk and I heartily recommend it to them and also new fans of AE. For the older fans, you may be dissapointed.
All in all though, I did give this 4 stars because it is better than 99% of the stuff being released today as music! Go AE!

This ambitious, 10-track CD by the Spanish vocalist/composer Alejandro Sanz translates into English as The Train of Moments. Sanz's Andalusian-aired, flamenco-flavored vocals are backed by co-producer Lulo Perez's evocative synth arrangements and urban beats--with the help of Mana drummer, Alex Gonzalez, and Ketama vocalist Antonio Carmona--and other hip collaborations. Sanz teams up with Shakira on the spare, Brazilianized track "Te lo Agradezco, Pero No" and mixes it up with the rap duo Calle 13 and guitarist Juanes on the hip-hop/reggaeton-friendly ode to female seduction "La Peleita." The martial and moody video single "A la Primera Persona" contrasts with the rock-ish "Se Molestan" and the jazz-tinged piano chords on "Donde Convergemos." Sanz has been a pan-Latino powerhouse for over 15 years, and this recording will no doubt solidify and expand his position in that pantheon. --Eugene Holley, Jr.Album Description

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Ripe with the enigmas of loss, love, and connections across great distances, Alejandro Escovedo's sixth solo album realizes the promise of his remarkable gifts as singer, songwriter, and arranger. On spiraling tiers of pedal steel, cellos, violins, and electric and acoustic guitars, his chamber-rock vision comes to full fruition. He's never made freer garage pop than "Castanets," never stirred a more sweeping lyricism than in "Don't Need You," and never laid bare more soul than in the heartbreaking "Follow You Down" (a ballad Escovedo often dedicates to Townes Van Zandt). Even more amazing are the pairing of "Wave" and "Rosalie," subtle dramas of the Mexican-American passage through separation and faith, and the swirling, aching "About This Love," which concludes "It's all about the way/We break, to love again." Escovedo has always sought a poetic fusing of sound and image; with A Man Under the Influence, that search is complete. --Roy KastenAlbum Description

Estas canciones son para ti..........2004-03-17
Alejandro Escovedo is one songwriter and musician that I was fortunate to run into not too long ago, one who magically manages to seamlessly blend influences from folk, rock & roll, punk, country and texmex music. After learning about him, this album, with all its "dia de los muertos" motif instantly captured my attention: gladly I later found out most of his fans consider it to be his best production to date. To me the 11-song was like a book consisting of two intertwined chapters, somewhat (and two very solid chapters, for the matter). From the opening chord of "Wave", into the contagious "Rosalie", the first chapter is mostly straight-up rock 'n roll with songs that equally borrow from The Beatles in their early years or Los Lobos, while still retaining a uniqueness that makes them refreshing, making you want to listen to them over and over again.
The other chapter of the album shows a far more personal side of Escovedo, with "Across The River", "Velvet Guitar" (a very Tom Petty-like tune), the intimate "Don't Need You" and the closing "About This Love" making you wonder: what on earth are we listening to these days, when a guy like Alejandro Escovedo is far from being well known? (to the point on depending on his friend's and fan's help to get back on his feet after collapsing in April 2003 -you can also help him by going to http://www.alejandrofund.com/)

Pushing the musical envelope with each successive album, the young Alejandro Fernandez went for broke on this fusion of pop balladry and trad rancheras. In a smart move, he picked veteran studio wiz Emilio Estefan Jr. to come up with a winning recipe--great material and excellent musicianship to back up a topflight singer. Gloria Estefan teams up with Fernandez in the duet "En el Jardin," a touching tune about finding true love. But it's on the inspirational song "Yo Naci para Amarte" that Fernandez's velvety baritone fuses passion with power as he sings of coming to terms with destiny. On the same level is "No Se Olvidar," in which he conveys the fear of solitude that coexists with the drive of personal conviction. Both songs radiate with a potent mix of emotion, from angry yells to desperate pleadings. --Ramiro BurrCustomer Reviews:

In less than a decade, Alejandro Fernández has emerged as one of Mexico's leading young performers by effortlessly balancing the solid ranchera sounds of his father Vicente Fernández with the slick balladry of contemporaries like Enrique Iglesias. On Entre Tus Brazos, however, Fernández sticks a bit too close to the formula of his past successes. His deep, expressive voice glides nicely around the sensual rhythms of "Háblame" and "Quiéreme," but there's a sense of slick detachment that courses throughout most of the tracks, all of which were produced by Emilio Estefan, Jr. Every song is awash in sound-alike string arrangements and tortured-love lyrics. The tempo picks up here and there, but this glossy collection is likely to induce more sleep than swoons. --Joey GuerraCustomer Reviews:

While at first there seemed little variation in mood between the songs, the subtle changes soon became in evident. You do not need to understand Spanish, but I sure wish I did, it is so romantic and passionate.
Furthermore, the sound quality is superb, and with 13 songs at 57 minutes total, it is an uncommonly generous package. Special regoginition must go to Kiki Santander for writing 7 of these wonderful songs, and Emilio Estefan for his production.
And to top it all off, Alejandro is one of the most handsome, sexy men imaginable, wonderful to picture seeing these songs!
Anyone who has in interest in Latin male vocals, should buy this CD immediately, and it is worth whatever price you pay for it.

Ranchera heartthrob Alejandro Fernandez polishes up his sound on A Corazon Abierto, his first pop album since 2000's Entre Tus Brazos. That effort was marred by Emilio Estefan's bland production and repetitive instrumentation, but Fernandez diversifies on Corazon, enlisting the help of Aureo Baqueiro (Sin Bandera, Aleks Syntek) and Kike Santander, producer of choice for a dazzling roster of artists, including Thalia, Gloria Estefan, Jennifer Lopez, and David Bisbal. They wrap Fernandez's swoon-inducing voice in lush instrumentation, veering from somber ballads ("Para Vivir," "Me Dedique a Perderte") to galloping uptempo tracks ("Se Va," "Canta Corazon"). Fernandez's mariachi sensibilities have often been muzzled during his pop-flavored outings, but the flamenco-guitar flourishes and blaring horns actually seem to play up his trademark sound and style. It makes for a confident collection that cleverly straddles both genres and makes the most of Fernandez's sexy--and often thrilling--voice. --Joey GuerraCustomer Reviews:
Alejandro.......2007-03-09
AMAZING.......2006-11-10
Solid Work.......2006-08-17
I tend to disagree with those who say that Entre Tus Brazos is his best pop album. Personally, I believe that is his weakest album. I am one of those fans who prefers to hear him sing those rancheras, but I also realize that part of the evolution and growth of a performer is the constant reinventing and the willingness to explore new areas. I know that he became famous singing such hits as "Se Me Van Las Ganas" "Piel de Nina", and "Como Quien Pierde Una Estrella", but I also know that he has consolidated himself as a true superstar with his latter works.
This particular album starts out strong but dies off just a bit, and just when you think you're going to turn it off, he comes at you with another good song. My personal favorites are "Canta Corazon" "Me Dedique a Perderte" "Que Voy a Hacer Con Mi Amor" "Que Lastima" and "Se Va". 6 out of 13 isn't bad, and those are just the ones I like most. It's definitely worth buying.
Balancing Tradition and Emotion!.......2006-04-24
Nice balance between the Alejandro's ranchera and pop voices.......2005-12-29
On this album, florid ranchera instrumentation combined with Fernandez's rich, buttery vocals and pop melodies result in a production everyone will enjoy. At the same time, the album leaves listeners nostalgic for their Alejandro Ferdandez---whether that is the sultry pop version or the charro suit, mariachi version.
Pay special attention to "Canta Corazon", an irreverent but infectious love song. High points of the album also include "Que Voy a Hacer Con Mi Amor" and "Me Dedique A Perderte".

Spanish-born heartthrob Alejandro Sánchez Pizarro, better known to the world as Alejandro Sanz, burst onto the Latin pop charts as a 16-year-old with his hit "Los Chulos Son Pa' Cuidarlos." He followed that with a number of killer CDs, including his 1993 breakout, Si Tú Me Miras, which guest-starred flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia, Nacho Maño, and Chris Cameron. This 2001 live date, recorded in Miami, was nominated for the 2002 Latin Grammy Award for Album of the Year. It captures the pathos and passion of Sanz's tearful tenor voice much better than his studio dates. Backed by strings, horns, and a rhythm section with Latin percussion, Sanz's velvet voice is presented in a sonic setting that brings out his maturity. That maturity is heard on the flamenco-flavored dedication to his daughter, "Y Solo Se Me Ocurre Amarte," and on his standbys "Amiga Mia," "Corazón Partío," and "Quiero Morir en Tu Veneno." Though the format is known for its hype, it's on the mark with this artist. --Eugene Holley Jr.Customer Reviews:

If anyone warrants an expanse career retrospective, it's Alejandro Sanz, whose gravelly-voiced charm and thoughtful songwriting have been thrilling fans for years. The Spanish singer gets his just due on this beautifully packaged, three-disc collection chronicling his entire musical livelihood. Two new tracks, "Tu No Tienes Alma" and "Cuando Sea Espacio," mesh nicely with Sanz's repertoire. But it's the well-known hits--"La Fuerza del Corazon," "Como Te Hecho de Menos," "Quisiera Ser" and "No Es Lo Mismo," just to name a few--that give Grandes Exitos its heft. Sanz is one of Spanish pop music's most-accomplished songwriters and musicians, and experiencing his entire body of work at once is a genuine treat. Equally enticing is the third disc of rarities, which includes unreleased duets with Omara Portuondo, the Corrs and Armando Manzanero, as well as several demos, including an acoustic rendition of the Sanz classic "Corazon Partio." A true keepsake of an artist in his electrifying prime. --Joey GuerraAlbum Description

A Rare Treat.......2005-09-06
A few months later after listening to nothing but Alejandro and buying up every album of his I could find, I went to see him live at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. His live performance was every bit as exciting and as skillfully produced as his recordings and it was amazing to be a part of such a wildly enthusiastic crowd that knew every single word of every one of his songs and were often on their feet singing along.
Alejandro Sanz is an extraordinary singer/songwriter, a world apart from the crowd but still very accessible, even for someone like me who speaks little Spanish. His seamless fusion of pop, jazz and latin with his heritage of Flamenco and Gitano stylings, gives Alejandro's music a uniqueness that many have attempted but few accomplished so well.
The argument over whether Flamenco should be left alone is pretty much resolved I think, with artists like Alejandro Sanz and Ojos de Brujo who pay such great homage to it in their music.
Alejandro's latest release, the 3 disc Grandes Exitos 91_04 is a wonderful collection of some of his best music, with new and rare recordings to richen the feast. His duets on the 3rd disc are a treat. In particular, his recording of Cai with Nina Pastori is stirring and evocative and a great example of how beautifully Flamenco stylings can work in a contemporary setting when they're in the hands of the right musicians and singers.
Alejandro Sanz is a gem and his music a rare pleasure. But when all is said and done, it's that voice and the raw passion driving it that gives him so much of an edge over his contemporaries. His music holds up over the years and with countless repeated listenings because Alejandro is at his core, a gifted musician and he knows how to deliver the goods.
Grandes Exitos 91_04 will undoubtedly end up in every Sanz fan's collection but for somebody who isn't yet familiar with Alejandro's music, this is a perfect place to start.
More than a musician, this man is a poet!.......2005-09-03
The most beautiful suprise of this album was disc #3, titled "Rarezas", you will appretiate the essence of his creation of music, and also, you will find a familiar song hidden in two songs. His duet with The Corrs that is recorded in this album is simply excelent! (if you are familiar with his music, you will recognize the original song that serves as the base of this song)
My comment, Alejandro is an artist, an unbelievable artist, and this album is a living proof of this. Enjoy!!
