Viento a Favor is Mexican superstar Alejandro Fernandez's 15th studio disc in as many years as a singer. But he still approaches each project with the urgency and earnestness of a newbie singer. That's what makes each tune a small celebration, an intimate moment of discovery. There are no wasted moments amid the sterling arrangements, some of the best in Fernandez's lush pop repertoire. (He's an equally heralded ranchera singer.) Viento a Favor features tunes written by Leonel Garcia and Noel Schajris (better known as emotive Latin-pop duo Sin Bandera) and Mexican singer Reyli Barba. They're all taken to wuthering heights by Fernandez's stellar vocal range, which goes from hushed whispers to booming intensity. First single "Te Voy a Perder" is an epic romance, and "Amor Gitano," a duet with bilingual diva Beyoncé, expectedly smolders. Closing tune "Cuando Estamos Juntos" is another surprise, an acoustic-flavored ode to simple joy. --Joey Guerra

5 out of 5 stars He can just sing anything . . ........2007-07-26

. . . with this voice. This is definitely adult pop, the direction Alex's music has been taking for the last few years now. He's matured and so has his voice; it's much more resonant and you hear that better singing ballads and this type of smooth pop than the traditional mariachi music. Hard to pick a favorite here, but "Te Voy A Perder" and "Sin Consideracion" are the songs most likely to appeal across genres. Alex is sure to win some new fans with this mix. Even if you don't speak Spanish, he still makes you feel the mood of his songs and you will believe you understand what he's singing. He is La Voz (The Voice).

4 out of 5 stars Very good........2007-07-22

Alejandro has a very pleasant voice that projects real feelings in the words he is expressing. Whether he sings pop or rancheras his voice captures the listener.

2 out of 5 stars Not Alejandro's style.......2007-07-22

Love the hit song "Te voy a perder" and the song with Beyonce', but the rest of the songs are okay. Kinda boring. They are not Alejandro's style of music. I love Alejandro soooooo much I dream of him. I listen to his concert in Spain CD three to four times a week and watch his DVD very often. He's my idol. I love his other cd's also "Corazon Abierto" and his Mariachi CD's. He's awesome! This new cd of his, just isn't his style. I believe he's trying to get into the pop scene, but he's better with his balads and Mariachi music. If you want to listen to it, I suggest buying a used one instead and save your money.
Ale, you can come to my home anytime for dinner and ??!

Ale's big FAN!

Alejandro Agonistes may yet have a happy ending, but you wouldn't guess it from this torrent of surrealism and gothic textures. Escovedo's first album since nearly succumbing to hepatitis C and crushing debt in 2003 is the darkest, most mysterious album of his career--a harrowing, poetic soundscape partly the result of producer John Cale's industrial-noir sensibilities, but also Escovedo's own avant-garde punk roots. The difficult trilogy which opens the album moves from arid Arizona (a wasteland where the soul finds nary a drop to drink) to a conversation with a "dear head on the wall" that becomes a negative Zen poem ("The sadness will come / When there is no one") to a cryptic vision of a buck trampling a wandering doe. Writing with his wife, poet Kim Christoff, as well as Chris Stamey and guitarist Jon Dee Graham, Escovedo isn't just confronting his own mortality and the mistakes which plunged him into a nightmare. He's courting a danse macabre for the sounds and poetry he finds there. On "Sacramento and Polk" he surveys a bohemian hell through a "Thorazine haze," while the Princely groove of "Take Your Place" only seems like a discordant funk party until the lyrics sink in: "I'm going down, down, down / There's nothing here." Escovedo's voice has weathered the physical ravages, caressing all the Mexican nuances out of the synth- and cello-sweetened "Evita's Lullaby" and breaking beautifully on the country ballad "Died a Little Today," which, like each of these emotionally concentrated tracks, is as literal as it is elusive. --Roy Kasten

5 out of 5 stars Music from the Bout .......2007-06-16

As if ample evidence were needed that extraordinary music can be made without benefit of chemistry, Escovedo, his co-writers, and Cale have produced a darkly jeweled kaleidoscope, a flowering of post-illness creativity that incorporates some of the most interesting instrumentation I've heard on record in some time. No longer satisfied with the usual, Escovedo stretches far beyond the punk or alt-country mold with a symphonist's virtuosity. These songs are punctuated by stunningly surrealistic lyrics and the twisted virtuosity of some of the most unusual ensemble players and soloists I've heard in years.

4 out of 5 stars another excellent outting from mr escovedo.......2007-03-09

no such thing as a bad alejandro escovedo cd. this is one talented gentleman. mid-tempo songs, slow-tempo songs, and hard rockers make this a recording with a fine mix of moods. as usual, there is a wonderful variety of textures; with violin, cello, accordion, acoustic guitars, and electric guitars blending into a creative flow of sound. produced by the great john cale, the audio quality is excellent, the atmosphere fresh and beautiful. this cd was selected by "no depression" magazine as the 7th best album of 2006. i, too, highly recommend it, as i do all of this artist's recordings. fine stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Cale'd.......2007-01-21

The other reviewers summed up many of my feelings about this CD. Why don't I love it? It is because I have come to expect a certain sound from AE. I am listening to a previous release called Gravity right now and can imagine listening to it 100's of more times.

The Boxing Mirror, produced by John Cale, has some excellent songs that rock as much as anything AE has ever done - Arizona and Sacramento & Polk come to mind immediately. The hooks are in you real fast and I listened to Sac & Polk many times at AE's website totally mesmerized by the big raunchy sound. But, will this disk survive in the heavy rotation of my CD changer staying for months like the Buick MacKane and True Believers CD's - probably not.

For fans of John Cale, I think they will love this disk and I heartily recommend it to them and also new fans of AE. For the older fans, you may be dissapointed.

All in all though, I did give this 4 stars because it is better than 99% of the stuff being released today as music! Go AE!

5 out of 5 stars Vibrant Rock Hybrid.......2007-01-21

Alejandro Escovedo who is related to Sheila E & has been in rock bands Rank & File, the Nuns, & True Believers has produced an excellent CD. Escovedo's "Pyramid of Tears" from his "Gravity" CD remains one of my favorite classic album cuts of all time. On this CD we have a number of excellent tracks. "Break This Time" rocks with roaring electric guitar and strings to great a vibrant rock hybrid, "Whoever told you there'd be no danger, nothing to fear here in this house of pain; So speak to me softly & tell me you love me & we'll join together in the refrain." It's a breathtaking stew that climaxes with the closing bars. "Take Your Place" places a complicated lyric on a driving rock beat, "I'm going down, down, down, even deeper still, 'cause this world has gotten so f***ed up." "One True Love" written with Chris Stamey is a wild rocking track, "I'm all messed up; I got nothing to take your place." The opening cut "Arizona" is a haunting melody that snakes eerily through self-exploration, "I turned my back on me & I faced the face of who I thought I was." Mark Andes who was in the bands Spirit, Jo Jo Gunne & Firefall plays the bass on the set. This is a dark album. Escovedo explores themes of loss, regret and sorrow in an original blend of musical styles. Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Dark and Moody.......2007-01-20

I saw this guy on PBS and he sounded great playing live, so I bought this CD, which has a many of the songs he did on TV. The album doesn't seem as powerful as the live show. There are some good songs, though. I like "Arizona" & "Break This Time." Escovedo has a melancholy sound, but not quite depressing. Also I have to admit, I just love pronouncing his name!

This ambitious, 10-track CD by the Spanish vocalist/composer Alejandro Sanz translates into English as The Train of Moments. Sanz's Andalusian-aired, flamenco-flavored vocals are backed by co-producer Lulo Perez's evocative synth arrangements and urban beats--with the help of Mana drummer, Alex Gonzalez, and Ketama vocalist Antonio Carmona--and other hip collaborations. Sanz teams up with Shakira on the spare, Brazilianized track "Te lo Agradezco, Pero No" and mixes it up with the rap duo Calle 13 and guitarist Juanes on the hip-hop/reggaeton-friendly ode to female seduction "La Peleita." The martial and moody video single "A la Primera Persona" contrasts with the rock-ish "Se Molestan" and the jazz-tinged piano chords on "Donde Convergemos." Sanz has been a pan-Latino powerhouse for over 15 years, and this recording will no doubt solidify and expand his position in that pantheon. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Album Description

Album includes collaborations with Shakira, Juanes, Calle 13, and Alex Gonzalez. Production contributions by Thom Russo (Audioslave, Macy Gray, Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton, and Mana).

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars "El Maestro Sanz".......2007-06-08

Alejandro Sanz is still the greatest composer in Spanish music today. This artist's music has definitely evolved throughout the years and in this latest compilation, Alejandro has expanded his music genres and attempted to mix several rhythms creating various styles of music. The simple ballads he once composed are no longer found; however, there are still some that remind you of his stylized thought provoking ballads. There are several songs Sanz decided to experiment with, which some people who loved his music may not enjoy; however if you are a true Alejandro sanz fan you can appreciate his genius in developing his music and lyrics. There are some very powerful songs and the lyrics are genius; however others are a little too experimental for my tastes. I recommend this compilation, probably not one of my favorite CD's from him but if you are still wondering about getting this CD, maybe just download a couple of his songs.

4 out of 5 stars Great come back.......2007-05-11

Nice music. Sanz returned to his roots and included excellent duets with Residente (Calle 13), Shakira and Juanes. Highly recommended CD.

5 out of 5 stars Excelente el disco.......2007-01-23

4 out of 5 stars Sanz put a good one in the stores!.......2007-01-18

Well when i bought this cd, my first comment about it was that's good music, not a masterpiece but good work.

then I put special interest in the lyrics, and wow "TE QUIERO Y TE TEMO" is AN EPIC SONG, the feeling, the intensity, Is the passion of a couple in their love and hate moments, that's my song in this album, other good songs are Se lo dices tu, Ensename Tus manos, te lo agradezco pero no, A la primera persona, And en la planta de tus pies.

Great album, not his best but A GREAT ONE.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Ripe with the enigmas of loss, love, and connections across great distances, Alejandro Escovedo's sixth solo album realizes the promise of his remarkable gifts as singer, songwriter, and arranger. On spiraling tiers of pedal steel, cellos, violins, and electric and acoustic guitars, his chamber-rock vision comes to full fruition. He's never made freer garage pop than "Castanets," never stirred a more sweeping lyricism than in "Don't Need You," and never laid bare more soul than in the heartbreaking "Follow You Down" (a ballad Escovedo often dedicates to Townes Van Zandt). Even more amazing are the pairing of "Wave" and "Rosalie," subtle dramas of the Mexican-American passage through separation and faith, and the swirling, aching "About This Love," which concludes "It's all about the way/We break, to love again." Escovedo has always sought a poetic fusing of sound and image; with A Man Under the Influence, that search is complete. --Roy Kasten

Album Description

Produced by Chris Stamey (former dB's) and performed by many of Alejandro's band of usual suspects, it also features the contributions of Eric Heywood (Richard Buckner, Freakwater),Mitch Easter, members of Superchunk, Ryan Adams, Chip Robinson (The Backsliders), Caitlin Cary (Whiskeytown) and more. The album's first two tracks inspired Alejandro to write the play 'By The Hand Of The Father', which has already premiered in L.A. and was be performed at SXSW 2001. 11 tracks. 2001 release.

One of the finest song writers going on anywhere. He writes from his heart about personal things that we can all relate to. I love this guy. I have for years. Since Rank and File on down the line. His songs breaks and mends hearts. Alejandro, i will quit my day job and be your roadie!

5 out of 5 stars Unique and Wonderful.......2005-09-27

Alejandro Escovedo is a Mexican-American guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter and his music is incredibly difficult to categorize. At times he ranges across country and rock landscapes performing ballads, love songs, haunting melodic studies, and scorching rock and roll. There are moments when his songs are reminiscent of the Eagles in the way they are arranged and in the lyrical structures, yet his is a solo voice that is compelling without the support of harmony. I bought the CD on the strength of songs like "Velvet Guitar" and "Castanets" which were getting a lot of radio airplay in Austin. Over time, I have come to love the rest of this album even more than those two tracks. Alejandro is a fine singer and a very good guitarist, but the strength of this album is his songwriting and arranging. This is one of those recordings that true music fans will appreciate more after a dozen or so playings than they do at first. The music is complex and multi-layered, despite the simplicity of the single voice and guitar that are featured on most tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Estas canciones son para ti..........2004-03-17

"These songs are for you..." Alejandro Escovedo closes out his dedication to his sister Alice, in 'A Man Under the Influence', and truth be told, these songs feel as if they are written for and sung to each and everyone of us individually.

Alejandro Escovedo is one songwriter and musician that I was fortunate to run into not too long ago, one who magically manages to seamlessly blend influences from folk, rock & roll, punk, country and texmex music. After learning about him, this album, with all its "dia de los muertos" motif instantly captured my attention: gladly I later found out most of his fans consider it to be his best production to date. To me the 11-song was like a book consisting of two intertwined chapters, somewhat (and two very solid chapters, for the matter). From the opening chord of "Wave", into the contagious "Rosalie", the first chapter is mostly straight-up rock 'n roll with songs that equally borrow from The Beatles in their early years or Los Lobos, while still retaining a uniqueness that makes them refreshing, making you want to listen to them over and over again.

The other chapter of the album shows a far more personal side of Escovedo, with "Across The River", "Velvet Guitar" (a very Tom Petty-like tune), the intimate "Don't Need You" and the closing "About This Love" making you wonder: what on earth are we listening to these days, when a guy like Alejandro Escovedo is far from being well known? (to the point on depending on his friend's and fan's help to get back on his feet after collapsing in April 2003 -you can also help him by going to http://www.alejandrofund.com/)

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic CD.......2003-08-14

This CD was a CD of the month at my local Public Radio station (KUNI), and Alejandro was featured on "The World Cafe". Because I had heard a few of the songs on the CD...I was both reluctant and hopeful when I bought the CD. I should not have been reluctant. The CD was enough for me to travel to Minneapolis to see Alejandro in concert. A Man Under the Influence is both masterful and approachable. Masterful enough for my father to enjoy it and approachable enough that my stepson requested that I burn Castanets onto a CD for him.

Pushing the musical envelope with each successive album, the young Alejandro Fernandez went for broke on this fusion of pop balladry and trad rancheras. In a smart move, he picked veteran studio wiz Emilio Estefan Jr. to come up with a winning recipe--great material and excellent musicianship to back up a topflight singer. Gloria Estefan teams up with Fernandez in the duet "En el Jardin," a touching tune about finding true love. But it's on the inspirational song "Yo Naci para Amarte" that Fernandez's velvety baritone fuses passion with power as he sings of coming to terms with destiny. On the same level is "No Se Olvidar," in which he conveys the fear of solitude that coexists with the drive of personal conviction. Both songs radiate with a potent mix of emotion, from angry yells to desperate pleadings. --Ramiro Burr

In less than a decade, Alejandro Fernández has emerged as one of Mexico's leading young performers by effortlessly balancing the solid ranchera sounds of his father Vicente Fernández with the slick balladry of contemporaries like Enrique Iglesias. On Entre Tus Brazos, however, Fernández sticks a bit too close to the formula of his past successes. His deep, expressive voice glides nicely around the sensual rhythms of "Háblame" and "Quiéreme," but there's a sense of slick detachment that courses throughout most of the tracks, all of which were produced by Emilio Estefan, Jr. Every song is awash in sound-alike string arrangements and tortured-love lyrics. The tempo picks up here and there, but this glossy collection is likely to induce more sleep than swoons. --Joey Guerra

What can I say that hasn't been said regarding this wonderfully thought out album? The music alone is captivating, AF voice is beyond realm. No one can touch me musically as he has and that's saying a lot considering i'm a rock-n-roll type of girl. Each song is sung in such a way that allows you to be there with him, he captures your attention immedietely and doesn't let go until the last track of the album. I love his style of singing and his velvety voice. I'm a new fan and will remain one until the ends of days......

5 out of 5 stars Such passion!.......2004-12-20

When I first was introduced to his music, I immediately fell in love with his style, his passion, and beautiful voice. This is one of my favorite cd's. I also love his new cd, "A Corazon Abierto". I also enjoy Luis Miguel, who also has a beautiful voice as well, among many other Latin artists. But I think Alejandro will always be my favorite. His voice and music is so sensual and passionate, so moving, and flows so smoothly. I like that he seems to have savored some of his father's style and blended it in with his own to make such wonderful music. And at such a young age, we will be very fortunate to enjoy his terrific voice for many years to come. I would highly recommend this cd.

5 out of 5 stars SWOON.....THUD!!!!!!!.......2003-06-30

First Off Alejandro Fernandez Has The Most Beautifully Stunning Male Voice Ever Created!!!! As For This Cd, Every Song Is Breathtaking & Wonderfully Arranged & Produced. The Title Song Is Simply Beyond Words And I Will Not Try To Explain It's Beauty, I Will Just Say I Get Chills Everytime I Hear It!!! The Fact That Alejandro Is Not More Popular Here In The State Is A True Shame!!!! If You Enjoy A Beautiful,Magical Voice Singing Romantic Glorious Songs Please Buy This Cd & Enjoy!!!!

5 out of 5 stars simplemente bello.......2001-05-17

After buying Loco, I decided to go for some of his newer pop stuff. With his beautiful voice and charming appearance. (LOL) I was not disappointed. This cd is really beautiful. I love all the songs. The songs are passionate, beautiful, and romantic. 2 thumbs up!

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly beautiful, romantic album.......2001-04-17

I am overwhelmed in the extreme by this wonderful CD. Every single song on this CD is absoultely beautiful, Alejandro's voice is just about the most gorgeous and expressive voice I have heard, deeply masculine, vividly evocative and emotional, yet never overly sentimental. The arrangements are lovely and sophisticated. I have become so possesed by this music, my only problem is not to play it every day. I want to because it really takes me to a wonderful romantic place that I like being.

While at first there seemed little variation in mood between the songs, the subtle changes soon became in evident. You do not need to understand Spanish, but I sure wish I did, it is so romantic and passionate.

Furthermore, the sound quality is superb, and with 13 songs at 57 minutes total, it is an uncommonly generous package. Special regoginition must go to Kiki Santander for writing 7 of these wonderful songs, and Emilio Estefan for his production.

And to top it all off, Alejandro is one of the most handsome, sexy men imaginable, wonderful to picture seeing these songs!

Anyone who has in interest in Latin male vocals, should buy this CD immediately, and it is worth whatever price you pay for it.

Ranchera heartthrob Alejandro Fernandez polishes up his sound on A Corazon Abierto, his first pop album since 2000's Entre Tus Brazos. That effort was marred by Emilio Estefan's bland production and repetitive instrumentation, but Fernandez diversifies on Corazon, enlisting the help of Aureo Baqueiro (Sin Bandera, Aleks Syntek) and Kike Santander, producer of choice for a dazzling roster of artists, including Thalia, Gloria Estefan, Jennifer Lopez, and David Bisbal. They wrap Fernandez's swoon-inducing voice in lush instrumentation, veering from somber ballads ("Para Vivir," "Me Dedique a Perderte") to galloping uptempo tracks ("Se Va," "Canta Corazon"). Fernandez's mariachi sensibilities have often been muzzled during his pop-flavored outings, but the flamenco-guitar flourishes and blaring horns actually seem to play up his trademark sound and style. It makes for a confident collection that cleverly straddles both genres and makes the most of Fernandez's sexy--and often thrilling--voice. --Joey Guerra

I love this album - Alejandro Fernandez is so good. I'm waiting for his next album!

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING.......2006-11-10

I love the way Alejandro Fernandez sang, because he feel what he said. Its a great performance

4 out of 5 stars Solid Work.......2006-08-17

I guess everyone has their own opinion of this album. Personally, I enjoyed it very much. I've been a fan of Alejandro's music for about 14 years, and It's been amazing to see the evolution. From a youngster attempting to imitate his father's voice (which, if you know Chente's music, it cannot be done)to a completely independant and mature artist.

I tend to disagree with those who say that Entre Tus Brazos is his best pop album. Personally, I believe that is his weakest album. I am one of those fans who prefers to hear him sing those rancheras, but I also realize that part of the evolution and growth of a performer is the constant reinventing and the willingness to explore new areas. I know that he became famous singing such hits as "Se Me Van Las Ganas" "Piel de Nina", and "Como Quien Pierde Una Estrella", but I also know that he has consolidated himself as a true superstar with his latter works.

This particular album starts out strong but dies off just a bit, and just when you think you're going to turn it off, he comes at you with another good song. My personal favorites are "Canta Corazon" "Me Dedique a Perderte" "Que Voy a Hacer Con Mi Amor" "Que Lastima" and "Se Va". 6 out of 13 isn't bad, and those are just the ones I like most. It's definitely worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Balancing Tradition and Emotion!.......2006-04-24

I do not comprehend the words, yet this superb artist has the ability to transfer his emotions past the barriers of language. The AF phenomenon can only go from strength to strength! I am looking forward to my next Latin music purchase!

4 out of 5 stars Nice balance between the Alejandro's ranchera and pop voices.......2005-12-29

While his pop debut "Me Estoy Enamorando" may have been too pop for fans of traditional ranchera music and the ranchera albums that established him as a force in Mexican music did not suit the tastes of mainstream pop audiences, "A Corazon Abierto" strikes the proper balance between the two.

On this album, florid ranchera instrumentation combined with Fernandez's rich, buttery vocals and pop melodies result in a production everyone will enjoy. At the same time, the album leaves listeners nostalgic for their Alejandro Ferdandez---whether that is the sultry pop version or the charro suit, mariachi version.

Pay special attention to "Canta Corazon", an irreverent but infectious love song. High points of the album also include "Que Voy a Hacer Con Mi Amor" and "Me Dedique A Perderte".

Spanish-born heartthrob Alejandro Sánchez Pizarro, better known to the world as Alejandro Sanz, burst onto the Latin pop charts as a 16-year-old with his hit "Los Chulos Son Pa' Cuidarlos." He followed that with a number of killer CDs, including his 1993 breakout, Si Tú Me Miras, which guest-starred flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia, Nacho Maño, and Chris Cameron. This 2001 live date, recorded in Miami, was nominated for the 2002 Latin Grammy Award for Album of the Year. It captures the pathos and passion of Sanz's tearful tenor voice much better than his studio dates. Backed by strings, horns, and a rhythm section with Latin percussion, Sanz's velvet voice is presented in a sonic setting that brings out his maturity. That maturity is heard on the flamenco-flavored dedication to his daughter, "Y Solo Se Me Ocurre Amarte," and on his standbys "Amiga Mia," "Corazón Partío," and "Quiero Morir en Tu Veneno." Though the format is known for its hype, it's on the mark with this artist. --Eugene Holley Jr.

I LOVE THE SONG "CORAZON PARTIO". MY MOM AND I USED TO AND STILL DO,PUT THE SONG OVER AND OVER LIKE AS IF WE WERE CRAZY.THAT IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE SONGS. YEAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful album.......2005-10-12

The 1st time I saw Alejandro Sanz was when he performed with Destiny's Child on an awards show. I was blown away by his music and charm. The next day, I bought this album. Although I can't understand a word of spanish, the melodies and instrumentation are exceptional. Alejandro's voice is sensual and full of emotion. He is an excellent singer/songwriter. I purchased a later album, and once again, I was not disappointed. He only improves with age.

5 out of 5 stars One of his best to date..........2003-09-20

I own this CD as well as Más, El alma al aire, and Básico, and this is my favorite so far, though I have yet to buy No es lo mismo. Granted, some of the songs do have a relatively high cheese factor, but this format suits almost all of his songs best. Todo es de Color and Aprendiz are gorgeous songs on this CD, and Alejandro's not too bad himself. Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars Splendid re-issue!!.......2002-12-05

I don't know for the States, but Alejandro Escovedo is unknown in Europe (at least in France), except by special music lovers of course. I discovered him last year only myself, with his beautiful album "A Man Under The Influence". I'm so lucky to have found out this "Gravity" re-issue, along with the "Thirteen Years" one, both are nothing but splendid! Satisfying at any level: the quality of the sound, the beauty of the booklet, of the cover art, and especially of the music! "Gravity" is a masterpiece. As lyrical as the best of Pink Floyd (from "Dark Side" and "The Wall"), as beautiful and pure as the best of the Velvet Underground or Lou Reed (think of the violins of "Street Hassle"), with sometimes rocks as good as the Rolling Stones ones. What could I say more?? The voice of Alejandro is raw and moving. His music is simple and inspired. His subjects are experienced from life. "We fell in love and it's never funny" he sings in "Last To Know".
Bonus CD: eight live songs from the same album, recorded in Santa Monica in 1993, plus a cover of Ian Hunter's "I Wish I Was Your Mother". The customer is happy! :o)

5 out of 5 stars fantastic.............2000-09-26

This earlier solo project is nothing short of incredible. Heartfelt lyrics with great acoustic instrumentation. "Gravity"was follwed by "Thirteen Years" (...), an absolutemasterpiece - talk about singing from the soul.

5 out of 5 stars His voice is the sound of five hearts breaking..........2000-02-22

This album is incredible! The quote above is from one of his songs but can just as well pertain to him. Buy this record and enjoy and hopefully his live show will be coming to a town near you!

If anyone warrants an expanse career retrospective, it's Alejandro Sanz, whose gravelly-voiced charm and thoughtful songwriting have been thrilling fans for years. The Spanish singer gets his just due on this beautifully packaged, three-disc collection chronicling his entire musical livelihood. Two new tracks, "Tu No Tienes Alma" and "Cuando Sea Espacio," mesh nicely with Sanz's repertoire. But it's the well-known hits--"La Fuerza del Corazon," "Como Te Hecho de Menos," "Quisiera Ser" and "No Es Lo Mismo," just to name a few--that give Grandes Exitos its heft. Sanz is one of Spanish pop music's most-accomplished songwriters and musicians, and experiencing his entire body of work at once is a genuine treat. Equally enticing is the third disc of rarities, which includes unreleased duets with Omara Portuondo, the Corrs and Armando Manzanero, as well as several demos, including an acoustic rendition of the Sanz classic "Corazon Partio." A true keepsake of an artist in his electrifying prime. --Joey Guerra

5 out of 5 stars Alejandro Sanz is the best singer/writer in pop latin music.......2007-03-09

I love these CD's, the first two have all Alejandro's greatest hits from the 80's and 90's, while the third one includes some of his popular live performances. If you are an Alejandro's fan you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST BUY!!.......2007-02-02

This is the first ever Spanish language album I bought. The only time I saw him was on MTV singing 'No Es Lo Mismo' and later the video with Shakira. I love his voice so much that I was willing to risk buying this album. It was the best buying decision I've made. I love all the tracks on cd1,2. Tracks on cd3 are good too but would have love 'em better if he had sang all the songs by himself. All the other singers sounded so unimpressive singing beside him. His voice is just so so very sexy even though I don't have a clue what he's saying(btw, I live where exposure to the spanish language is almost nil). His singing style too is different than what I've heard before. LOVE THE CDs, LOVE ALEJANDRO!!! Planning to get his Unplugged album too.

5 out of 5 stars Unedited Tracks.......2005-09-24

I remember the first time I heard of Alejandro Sanz...It was the Summer of 1998 and I was listening to "Si Fuera Ella" from a Spanish Ballads Radio Station in Barranquilla, Colombia. From that moment on, I was HOOKED! I would compare him to Pablo Neruda of the 21st Century. I have listened to his soul-drenching words that "[...]me peina el alma y me la enreda[...]" His "Grandes Exitos 91_04" album is the culmination of his best hits, from his debut album with Warners Brothers "Viviendo Deprisa" to his lastest "No es lo mismo." If I were to describe DISC 3, I would say that it is like an Invitation to his Personal Space, where one can grasp his Unedited Musical Talent in "Corazon Partido" to a Sevillana-vibe with Ketama in "Vida es un Espejo." If you have a magnifying glass at hand, take a peek and read the personal comments that his friends and Sanz wrote!

5 out of 5 stars A Rare Treat.......2005-09-06

Browsing for some new music a few years back I saw Alejandro Sanz' El Alma Al Aire album sitting on the shelf and was so taken with the cover art that I purchased it without having a clue who he was. Boy was I in for surprise. I'd never heard anybody sing like that before - the music was so rich and sophisticated, his voice so raw and passionate, that I had to put everything I was doing aside and just listen.

A few months later after listening to nothing but Alejandro and buying up every album of his I could find, I went to see him live at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. His live performance was every bit as exciting and as skillfully produced as his recordings and it was amazing to be a part of such a wildly enthusiastic crowd that knew every single word of every one of his songs and were often on their feet singing along.

Alejandro Sanz is an extraordinary singer/songwriter, a world apart from the crowd but still very accessible, even for someone like me who speaks little Spanish. His seamless fusion of pop, jazz and latin with his heritage of Flamenco and Gitano stylings, gives Alejandro's music a uniqueness that many have attempted but few accomplished so well.

The argument over whether Flamenco should be left alone is pretty much resolved I think, with artists like Alejandro Sanz and Ojos de Brujo who pay such great homage to it in their music.

Alejandro's latest release, the 3 disc Grandes Exitos 91_04 is a wonderful collection of some of his best music, with new and rare recordings to richen the feast. His duets on the 3rd disc are a treat. In particular, his recording of Cai with Nina Pastori is stirring and evocative and a great example of how beautifully Flamenco stylings can work in a contemporary setting when they're in the hands of the right musicians and singers.

Alejandro Sanz is a gem and his music a rare pleasure. But when all is said and done, it's that voice and the raw passion driving it that gives him so much of an edge over his contemporaries. His music holds up over the years and with countless repeated listenings because Alejandro is at his core, a gifted musician and he knows how to deliver the goods.

Grandes Exitos 91_04 will undoubtedly end up in every Sanz fan's collection but for somebody who isn't yet familiar with Alejandro's music, this is a perfect place to start.

5 out of 5 stars More than a musician, this man is a poet!.......2005-09-03

Alejandro Sanz is one of the most talented artists I have known. He can bring to life his feelings in each one of his songs, and he can make them feel like a part of your own history. He has passion for life, for love, for people, and he shows this not only in his music, but also in his wonderful live perfomances. This album is perfect because you can enjoy his evolution as a musician and appreciate that special way he has to reinvent himself to be better every day - a live proof of this is are the three versions of the song "Como te Echo de menos" (only the original version is available in this record) It is really amazing how he managed to give the same message, to transmit the same feeling, changing the lyrics of this song (listen to the unplugged version in his Basico record, and then listen the MTV Unplugged version after you have enjoyed this original version... then you will understand).
The most beautiful suprise of this album was disc #3, titled "Rarezas", you will appretiate the essence of his creation of music, and also, you will find a familiar song hidden in two songs. His duet with The Corrs that is recorded in this album is simply excelent! (if you are familiar with his music, you will recognize the original song that serves as the base of this song)

My comment, Alejandro is an artist, an unbelievable artist, and this album is a living proof of this. Enjoy!!
