One of my favorites.......2005-06-16

This is one of my favorite electro ambient albums. The music challenges you with every turn. One of the few groups of this type of music that seems to have a sense of humour. This music is great for driving, it moves forward, with unexpected turns. There is alot to absorb here, the tracks are dense with dark melody and exotic beats. I put this Cd on repeat and let it go. Excellent work!

Random, noisy and bizzare........2005-04-27

I bought this ablum based on the description and on good reviews I had read elsewhere. However, this album did not live up to the hype. I was expecting melodic, futuristic, ambient music like artist Zero One. However, cyberCHUMP just seems to combine random, noisy and bizzare sounds that gave me a headache! I listened to the CD twice, to see if I would enjoy it more the second time, but I didn't. If you like your ambient music noisy with little or no structure, then this is for you. Otherwise skip this CD.

The Perfect Sonic Cocktail.......2004-07-05

A blurb on the back of this CD refers to the music as "aural sculpting meets the beat," but that doesn't quite come close to describing this infectious blend of funky grooves, downtempo luster, and a playfully experimental sensibility. cyberChump (secret identities: Jim Skeel and Mark G.E.) know the value of a body-bouncing bass line and how to blend it with floating melodics for a smooth ride--check out the CD's title track, a fine example of a perfect sonic cocktail. They also know when to darken things up, as with the grim "Helium Device" and "Vulcan's Forge," or to slam the listener with solid drum 'n bass, as in the excellently assaultive "River of Doubt," one of the highlights of this very good CD.

Scientists also slips in plenty of interesting rogue sounds, from a twangy slide guitar to nearly buried jazzy horns making brief-but-effective cameo appearances in the midst of pure electronica. Each track is expertly crafted, with sound-layers existing in perfect symbiosis, and the flow from one track to the next is flawless. Perfect for up-front listening or an unobtrusive ambient experience.

A Marvelous CD!.......2004-06-07

From the opening bleeps, minimalist techno may spring to mind, but jumping to conclusions can be the inappropriate thing to do as this instrumental develops into quite a melodic outing that has a decent beat with drums. "Signals" contain the notations that are just short of being totally melodic and therefore remain within the contemporary regime. It blooms when the speakers are allowed sufficient power to do justice to the bass. A complete change of tempo is to be found on "Pressure Tactic" where slightly distorted sounds flick between the speakers and the drums are recorded with excellent clarity. It is certainly an interesting track as there is a lot to take in on the first listening session, but you're hooked instantly. The gongs announce the arrival of "Helium Device" onto which precisely controlled feedback and lo-fi drums are included. The drums do change into a top-heavy sound with distortion and the haunting melody has a slightly unsettling edge to it. The title track consists of a very powerful bass line, easy listening acoustic guitar sections and strange noises all contributing to a great instrumental. Another brilliant track is "Presidents from Another Planet" with its distinctive modified sound of something vaguely similar to opening a gate along with the rolling bass notes all contributing a very intriguing instrumental that has many musical twist and turns. Described on the sleeve as aural sculpting meets the beats is a very fair account of this marvelous CD by Jim Skeel and Mark G.E. (Brooky)

Ancient and familiar.......2007-02-06

Imagine darkness and light viewed from under water. The fascination from below of the wavy sun and blurry moon. The stillness, the curiousity, the fear of beyond. The unexplainable pull to explore and the power to change. "Sankhara" is the music of the Earth 300 million years ago. A hypnotizing soundtrack to the subtle movements of glaciers, lava flowing from volcanoes, rocks caressing each other underground to slowly form mountains. cyberCHUMP has created an amazing album that takes your mind back to viewing the sunset on a naked, and young Earth. It hits the soul in an ancient way. This is the music that lured us out of the ocean.

The CD kicks off with the subtly scratchy sublime floating caresses and pinging echoes of “Plateaux” (reminiscent of Pink Floyd’s Meddle) and then heads into mysterious territory on “Lighten” with its cyber-lounge opening which transforms into a miasmic whirlpool of drones and textures. cyberCHUMP fans who are wondering “Hey, where are the beats?” need wait no longer than track three, “The Atmosphere Next Door” wherein glitch beats meld with electric guitar, Jason Todd’s sultry saxophone and the voice talent of Jeanne Marie Vielleux, yielding a neon-tinted 2 am whisky glow awash in futuristic textures. “Healing Time” explores that lush beautiful electronica exemplified by fellow ambient artists Crown Invisible and Dome (from the Cursor Club consortium), as waves of synths ebb and flow underneath gracefully chattering beats. Of course, Skeel and G.E. are just warming up, and soon head off into familiarly bizarre rhythm fests like the playful “Boogie Caravan (Stratosphere Mix)” with an explosive eruption of trap drum loops in the latter half of the song. The title track pulses and twinkles and whirrs and buzzes with more electronic sounds and effects than you’ll ever be able to keep in focus, which is the point, right? “Spanish Funk” finds a perfect midtempo groove, plants its happy feet, and then proceeds to rip up the place, thanks to Jason Loveall’s flights of fancy on his violin, soaring and dipping over the bed of percolating rhythms. Oh hell, there’s plenty more pleasant musical mayhem awaiting you on Secrets to Tell You, but there’s no sense in my going on further. CHUMPETTES know what’s in store and you rookies will just have to earn your stripes by playing this until your synapses fire in time with the beats, buoyed along by layer upon layer of flowing electronic melodies. Prepare to be dazzled but not dazed. After all, cyberCHUMP are not out to scare you. Maybe shake up your timid narrow view of ambient music a bit, but that’s a good thing, yes? Internal Combustion is back! Canned Heat celebrates its 40th year in the boogie business. As Bob Hite used to say "Don't Forget To Boogie". This Heat album and their other fine reissue Reheated are now both back in print and available on Friday Music.

Jim Skeel and Mark G.E. get together to play with a bunch of friends; it sounds like they had a blast with the jam-sessions of Inner Grooves... Sprawling, guitar-led excursion DistortoGroove heads into smoother vibes of faux-ethno-influenced Desert Keys, still quite bouncy in its demeanor. A misty entry into Space is the Case turns prog-jazzy as spattered cymbals, radiant sax streams, cool bass and more, smoothly jam. Spirited rhythms stomp through a dreamworld of musical styles as The Orbulon takes the sci-fi road to a rocking good time.

Blurting out buzzy streams of retro-movie horns as well as lounge-o-tronic vibes, and glaring surf guitars, warm We mixes and matches instrumental types with playful abandon and skill. Eloquently sawed strings add a sensual, semi-symphonic wang to Reflecting Pool, while Inner Core is marked by a murkier cyclone of sweetly somber swirls. Contagious glee for these inventive cross-pollinated jammers!

Though not my usual type of music, I was drawn into the beat and stayed for the funky exposition. Nothing trite or derivative, these tunes gave my brain something to think on and booty something to shake about. Or about which to shake, more properly. Check it out.

On this, his first all-instrumental disc, Kruth serves up a tasty gumbo of folk, experimental jazz, hip-hop, and world beat with a healthy dose of lunacy, prominently featuring his cherry red 1957 Fender Mandocaster (tuned to ADF#A, if you're keeping score). The fact that the disc is dedicated to both avant-garde jazz trumpeter Don Cherry and the Carnatic mandolin maestro U Srinivas should give you some idea of what you're in for. "Karmachanic," the leadoff number, has layered electric and acoustic mandolin parts that elevate it above the ordinary. "Wabash Cannibal" takes the train-tune idiom for a wild ride, with defiantly out-of-tune Mandocaster licks and some great sax from Jason Todd-whose playing, in fact, is featured just as prominently as Kruth's on most of the tracks. There's a wicked turntable scratch groove from Malcolm of Citizen King on "Bertha Cool," and the weirdest Rolling Stones cover of the millennium has to be Kruth's free-jazz take on "Lady Jane," which he subtitles the "Brian Jones ghost dance mix" in honor of Jagger & Co.'s late guitarist. "Midnight Hora," once again, is uniquely voiced: you won't hear tablas and tin whistle backing up an electric mandolin every day. There's more than a bit of New Orleans on "Parisha," while "Crazy Maker" is sort of a Wes-Montgomery-meets-John-Zorn-in-the-Twilight- Zone thing: Kruth plays an insistent Mandocaster theme in double stops using an alternate tuning based on major sevenths and tritones (either that or he multitracked it), while Todd and the rhythm section riff like a wrecking crew. As if that weren't enough, "Weeping Statues" and "Mary Mandolin" are both haunting waltzes that lend a bittersweet touch to the proceedings. rockin good time.......2000-12-08

The Cherry Electric consistantly rates on my all time good time album list. It is wondrfully innovative, genre bending music -- incorporating classic and acid jazz, eastern/indian sounds, african ala King Sunny Ade, rock and roll and folk. This mess is all packaged together in a way that is immediately understandable and makes you want to tap your feet or run around your house a few times. you can't go wrong to buy this album.

Love that electric cherry!.......2000-07-14

John Kruth is magic. It's hard to describe the type of music he plays on this CD. It's folksy-pop with splashes of ethnic color and alternative flair with a hint of jazzy rock. Beatnik comes to mind also... Sound confusing? It isn't. The melodies move like a warm breeze as in Kruth's homage to Brian Jones in 'Lady Jane'. The breeze changes to dust devil in 'Karmachanic' (brilliant), and in 'Wabash Cannibal' (the wordplay in the title, mirrors the mandolin-play in the song). It's impossible to keep your body still while listening, the rhythm literally hugs you in each song. The multitalented Kruth plays mandolin (wonderfully),harmonica, flute and several other instruments. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who appreciates beautiful, playful music.

Everyone I've played this for has a different idea of what activity they would play it to: Music for Painting, Music for Driving, Music for Musing. And it's all of those things. There are richly layered textures that can be accessd both unconsciously and consciously, depending on your state of mind and there's much here to discover even after hours of listening. Looking forward to hearing more from these talented artists.

I came across cyberCHUMP searching for cool electronic music and these guys are great! I think their music is great for driving. Its like space exploration music, a combination of exotic world sounds with hilarious audio snipets and great dreamy grooves. This is a disc that I keep near my computer and use for surfing the net!
