5 out of 5 stars Fats Domino, the greatest.......2006-10-21

Back when I was a young teen, Fats was the reigning King. I have all his songs and have seen him in person many times. His piano playing and his laid back, simple approach to his music are dear to me. I still sing his songs because they are deep seated in my psyche from years of listening. Things were simple then and things in my life were good. Still are, and I still bring out his music to make me happy and take me back to a wonderful time! Thanks Fats!

A great collection of songs from one of the finest soul harmony groups. The Persuaders are still making great music in 2007, check out their critically acclaimed new album available from Amazon called "MADE TO BE LOVED" on It's Soul Time! Records - which features new, original songs from Richard Poindexter, who also co-penned "Thin Line", "Love's Gonna Pack Up", "Peace In The Valley of Love" etc. and a new version of "Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me" featuring Tony "Showtime" Riley. As well as original writer and arranger, Richard Poindexter, the album also features contributions from original member, Willie B.Holland who is pictured above.

4 out of 5 stars The Persuaders- The Platinum Collection.......2007-03-26

Rhino stands for quality! So I thought! I have over 700 Cd's and A ton from Rhino. Having said that, this collection excites me and puzzles me at the same time! What do I mean?! Well, the very first track on this collection is the timeless, infectious monster jam "Thin Line...", that put the Persuaders on the map.Ok then I'll get to my point! You can here the record scratches pretty much throughout the song! This makes me wonder! This song has been on a million compilation sets and it has been cleaned up nicely. Why would Rhino,Warner,Atlantic have a problem with it's remastering? The rest of the disc seems fine! I'm just glad I have "Thin Line..." on about 30 other discs, or I would have been really upset!I guess it drives me crazy because it took over a decade for someone to put out another Persuaders set, and it's first song isn't cleaned up good!It is a pretty good collection though, having 20 tracks, 7 of them on disc for the first time,( track 13,14,15,17,18,19 and 20).
On a different note, I have all the Persuaders LP's, and if I was to put out a collection, it would be a little different. These guys have such killer ballads, that for some reason are just forgotten about!

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Solid Sixties Soul.......2007-06-24

Atlantic Records had the "southern soul" music market well covered during the sixties with a roster that included legends Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding, along with a host of other soul music stars. Arthur Conley, while definitely in Atlantic's second tier of performers, nevertheless made many worthwhile recordings that have aged well. He was a protégée of Otis Redding, although he sounded more like Sam Cooke. While "Sweet Soul Music" overshadows any of Arthur Conley's other records and is the song for which he is best remembered, there are enough other hard-to-find goodies on the "Platinum Collection" to satisfy any lover of "southern soul" music.

The "Platinum Collection" is one of over 20 collections that Warner Music UK (in conjunction with Rhino) has issued to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of Atlantic Records, and although this is not the best Arthur Conley compilation ever produced (that honor goes to "Sweet Soul Music The Best of Arthur Conley" (Ichiban, 1995)), it's the best one that is currently available. It features selections from each of Arthur's four Atco albums that were released during the period 1967-1969, including five tracks from "Sweet Soul Music", one from "Shake Rattle and Roll" (the title track), five from "Soul Directions," and a whopping eleven from "More Sweet Soul." Unlike the now out-of-print 1995 Ichiban compilation, which included a half dozen tracks that were only issued as "A" or B" sides of singles, there are no non-album tracks on "Platinum Collection."

Arthur Conley's Atlantic recordings were made with the cream of the crop of "southern soul" session musicians. The four recordings that Arthur made for Otis Redding's short-lived Jotis label were done at the Stax Studio in Memphis and were included on his first album. "Platinum Collection" includes "I'm A Lonely Stranger" and "Who's Foolin' Who," both of which feature the outstanding Stax crew (Booker T and the MGs, the Memphis Horns, etc.) The remainder of Arthur's first album, as well as his second, came from recordings made at the Fame Studio in Muscle Shoals. His third album, "Soul Directions", which showcased "Funky Street" and "People Sure Act Funny" was recorded at American Studios in Memphis with legendary producer Tom Dowd. Arthur's fourth and final Atlantic album ("More Sweet Soul") included tracks from both Memphis and Muscle Shoals. Three of the Fame Studio cuts feature Duane Allman on guitar, "Stuff You Gotta Watch," "That Can't Be My Baby" and "Speak Her Name."

5 out of 5 stars Excellent underrated Soul.......2007-05-15

This is the kind of underrated, excellent Soul that is known today only to those wonderful Brits who (deservedly) treasure this music like diamonds in their "Northern Soul Movement" or those of us who had an ear to Black R&B radio at the time.

Arthur Conley was a mentee of sorts to Otis Redding. Both had gravelly, gut-bucket voices, but Conley sang at a higher pitch. In either case, the songs here are great. Of course "Sweet Soul Music," (based on Sam Cooke's "Yeah Man"), the one song most people know him for today is here. "Funky Street" is quite a workout and lives up to its name. The version of "Shake Rattle and Roll" here does the incredible feat of being even more joyous and lively than Joe Turner's original (and goes rings around Bill Haley's rendition). Also, he does a lovely tribute to his mentor "Otis Sleep On," recorded shortly after Redding's untimely death.

After hearing this Cd, you'll wonder where this has been all your life. Enjoy.

2 out of 5 stars Love The Songs, No Doubt About It, But Why Are You Releasing Them For The 80 MILLIONTH TIME?!?!?!?.......2007-07-03

Any true fans of Chaka Khan will avoid this silly rehashing of all the material she has done since 1978! This dosent even belong in her section at all! We all love the music believe me, but Warners and Rhino wanna be cheap. Generic. COST EFFECTIVE.....Even at the cost of one of the most legendary female vocalists of our time! Frankly, Ill say what a lot of us think: Why keep wasting money on these rehashes when you could make money on a nice 4-6 disc boxset with all of her rarities and maybe a nice dvd with some videos and deleted ones? at least release Dare You To Love Me and Chaka Khan (1982)! Chaka Khan dosent deserve this neglect! POWER 2 THE PEOPLE, KEEP PRESSING ON MUSIC LOVERS!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Not everyone is 100 years old and Chakaholics but..........2007-04-12

...this is a good starting point for someone who wants to get a glimpse of what Chaka has done. Look, the cd packaging clearly states that the remixed songs are remixes. And perhaps someone might want to hear the og versions and buy I Feel for You which is a good thing. Personally, I loved the remix of Eye to Eye. It is the quintessential slow-house groove. Not all of the songs on the remix projects were gold but they were interpretations of fans and (then) current producers. And I am happy to write that I bought Chaka's self-titled Japan import CD in the early 90's. Anyway, if someone wants a glimpse of Chaka's work, this cd is a good place to begin.

1 out of 5 stars Disservice For Chakafiles.......2007-03-24

...Or Chakaholics as some call them Warner Bros. have done the same disservice to Chaka's music that has been done to Motown artists and the Isley Brothers;reissue their music in endless compilation packages that completely gloss over their career and make them seem more popular then they were. And 'The Platinum Collection' does the same to Chaka-her best compilation is Epiphany: The Best of Chaka Khan, Vol. 1 which she hand picked the tracks for herself.Otherwise if you seriously love listening to Chaka Khan (as I do) stick with the original albums.AND GET THAT 1982 SELF TITLED ALBUM BACK OUT!!!It won a friggin' GRAMMY;put it out on a 20'th Century Masters with another bonus disk, just like Diana (Deluxe Edition) and Bad Girls recieved! And what bothers me more is that I see that only her first two solo albums, plus I Feel for You' and The Woman I Am are still in print domestically in the US-that leaves an enormous chunk of her recorded output either as pricey import CD's and OOP nuggets. The same fate has met Rufus with classics like Street Player,Masterjam plus their 1973 debut in OOP land. Now that Motown is rectifying their policies along with the Isleys to focus on full lengh album reissues as opposed to compilations I think Chaka's people should get on the ball as well;she really deserves better then this.

1 out of 5 stars Rhino & Warner Brothers Are Fu***** Up!.......2006-08-09

'Chaka Khan - The Platinum Collection' ? Wow, just what serious 'Chakaholics' need...another collection of songs we've owned for years, and it's amazing that Rhino/Warner Brothers refuses open the vaults & release the music fans are interested in buying (the rare 'Chaka Khan' CD for example!). 'Chaka Khan' (1982) is one of Chaka's critically acclaimed (& Grammy Award Winning!) CDs, but Rhino insists on rehashing hits in a variety of packages, like this Platinum Collection for example. Shoot, Rhino / Warner Brothers is so screwed up that they even used a 25 year old picture of Chaka for the cover art, and you have to really wonder what they're smoking at the Warner Brothers Headquarters!

No wonder Chaka ran away from this fu**** up company in the first place! Serious 'Chakaholics' will walk past this mess of a CD, and wait patiently for La Khan's UPCOMING Burgundy Records (Sony/BMG) debut, featuring production by Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, and others! Sorry, but this so-called 'Platinum Collection' is a waste of retail space, and I can't rate it higher than 1 star. Fans have made better compilations at home!

P.S. The Remixes included on this CD are THE SAME crappy
versions on the 'Remix Project' CD from the mid 80's, so
don't even hope for something special on this 'Platinum
Collection', which SHOULD be called a Piece Of Sh**!!
