3 out of 5 stars nothing like the original.......2002-12-16

this cd is not all it could be. The earlier work of Juan Gabriel stands out more unlike this one! This one lacks the beautiful emotional vocals once heard in his early 80's music. This is basically a remake of those hits, and revamped. Where did that go? that makes the price of this cd so much less.

5 out of 5 stars great greatest hits cd.......2002-10-23

I noticed a certain kind of trend. It seemed that Juan gabriel now and then put out greatest hits cd's in between new material. This time is a greatest hits but with new arrangements and also re-recorded. Every new arrangement its totally opposite from its original but it is great!. For example the ranchera classic "Se Me Olvido Otra Vez" is now a bolero-mambo. Also another great ranchera ballad "La Diferencia" is now a strong melancholic tango ballad. Samba rythms are incorporated into the "Pero que necesidad,,para que vivir con penas" song. Siempre en mi Mente is transformed into a disco song. This whole cd is great.

5 out of 5 stars New takes, new moves.......2001-10-28

This is not just more of the same. Juan Gabriel has recut some of his best stuff from recent and not so recent years, left the production and most of the arrangement to people other than himself and Eduardo Magallanes, and come up with a new CD that will in one way or another move you. It's his most upbeat album in several years. "Siempre en mi mente" Gabriel's most beautiful release from the late '70s, has gone gospel! "Debo Hacerlo," the song that helped to put the wild in Gabriel and the audience during the "Juan Gabriel en el Palacio de Bellas Artes" video, has finally been brought into the spotlight where it belongs. Even old faithful "Querida" has a rock beat to it. "Catalina," the most intriguing number from the more recent "Abrazame muy fuerte" album, has been left relatively intact, the way it should be. An interesting version of "El Noa Noa" makes that old song new again. Juan Gabriel--thirty years in the music business and still coming up with fresh, great stuff. Mexico clearly has its answer to the United States' Ray Charles.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful.......2003-05-10

I find this disk exceptional, so much for the quality of the taking of sound, like for the interpretation of its musicians.
Here one of the music's better interpretations offers for guitar of the XVII and XVIII centuries.
The emotion invades me when listening the unrestrainable passion of the fandango of Murcia and the freshness of colors of the Zarambeques.
It is impossible to be impassive before this wonderful disk that reflects the human being's deeper emotions.
It was not expected less than Juan Carlos Rivera.

5 out of 5 stars The unusual performance.......2003-04-21

"Zarambeques" (Juan Carlos Rivera, Baroque Guitar and direction, Consuelo Navas, Theorbo, Juan M. Nieto, Baroque Guitar)
This is a beautiful CD with a marvelous compilation of repertoire from spanish guitar in 17th & early 18th century.
The music, the playing and the recorder sound are simplies stunnings.
Armoniosi Concerti recreate an atmosphère plenty of colours, an admirable control of rhythm, a clear of melodic lines, impeccable phrasing and precise expressiveness. Extraordinary performance of the "Fadango" (Murzia) and the "Folias" and "Canarios" (Sanz, Santa Cruz).
In the solo works (Guerau, Murzia) Rivera owns a commanding technique and a sweet sound.
This is a superb disc.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!!.......2003-04-19

I've never had heard this Spanish baroque guitar music played so skillfuly and with that vehemence. The items selection is perfect, with music that you can rarely hear on other records. The sound quality is great, very natural, and the interpretation is full of nuances, that go from "fortissimo" to "pianissimo". The ensemble arrangements are the best ones that I've ever heard. Absolutely recommended!!!!!
