"Soul Redemption" is the debut effort by songwriting/performing duo Abel Zarate (guitar) and Michelle Pollace (keyboards). Produced with the help of Grammy-nominated producer Greg Landau, "Soul Redemption" features some of the Bay AreaÂ’s brightest musical talents: John Santos (Machete Ensemble, Cachao, Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, others) on percussion; Paul van Wageningen (Pete Escovedo, Ray Obiedo, Stan Getz, Machete Ensemble, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, others) on drums; Curtis Ohlson (Ray Obiedo, Ray Charles, Pete Escovedo, Pee Wee Ellis, Bernie Krause, others) on bass; and Anthony Blea (San Francisco Symphony, Charanga 76, Machete Ensemble, Omar Sosa, Boz Scaggs, others) on violin and viola. The CD was mastered by John Greenham at Paul Stubblebine Mastering, in HDCD format for the superb audio fidelity. The cover features the vibrant African American folk art of Mari Hall. "Soul Redemption" features ten new, all-original compositions by Abel and Michelle, well-crafted and varied songs brought together into a cohesive sound they call "global jazz," a combination of alluring shades of Afro-Brazilian and Latin jazz, with a funk flair. The duoÂ’s original songs are melodic and rich in texture, taking listeners on a journey, often into unexpected territory ... but we think listeners will be pleasantly surprised with their destination. It's jazz with groove and hummable melodies, crossing over to winning fans among listeners who never thought they'd like jazz. I've been playing Assiya from Ido Ziv non-stop for days now. This album blends many different types of music into one great sound. The tunes are hypnotic at times, held together by some excellent drumming. I highly recommend this amazing disc.

Best latin jazz blend, all "old school".......2006-12-19

If you are a connoisseur of latin music you will not be disappointed. This is not the current "canned salsa" being served up in the "pre-fab" package that is thin and has no vitality. This is raw, exciting, and exquisitely played music that blends the old jazz experts with a cool latin groove.

Pre-Santana Latin Groove.......2004-05-22

If you want to see where Carlos Santana jumped out of, take a look at this terrific Afro-Cuban/Latin jazz sampler issued by Blue Note a couple of years ago. This music is all late 50's through 70's music recorded by Blue Note and its sister labels, and is a really good overview of what was going on at the time. I remember many of these artists frequently being featured at "The "Lighthouse" in Hermosa Beach, California, and they all put on great shows. Willie Bobo, The Jazz Crusaders, Bobby Hutcherson, Les McCann, and Candido among others. Sidemen include Hubert Laws, Herbie Mann and the bassist Al McKibbon. One great cut here is "Morning" by Clare Fischer, which I was totally ignorant of. Mr. Perlich, I did miss parts of Latin Jazz 101!
My one beef is the absence of Cal Tjader, but that must be a contractual matter rather than oversight by compiler Miles Perlich. Also, this could easily be a 2-CD issue, given the rapidly rising popularity of Afro-Latin music, and the great contributions of these legends.

. . . certainly one of the greatest vibraphonists ever, these guys get a huge initial boost. Locke calls them "the strongest vibes-based trio I've ever heard." Entirely deserved, from the evidence presented on this, their debut disc, I might add. They've also managed to snag Randy Brecker on trumpet and rising guitar star Vinny Valentino for several numbers.

Shifting easily between funk, Latin, bop, jazz beat, and beyond--sometimes within the same number (check out the astounding "La Essencia del Guanguanco")--these guys have a sound signature entirely their own: hip, fluid, drenched in the history of the music, but always searching and transformative, never static. Further proof: their jaw-dropping take on the Beatles' "Fool on the Hill" and Ellington's "Caravan"--barely recognizable and too cool for words.

A good deal of the credit must go to John Benitez, an absolute monster on acoustic and electric bass, and Steve Hass, who brings a punkish, David King-like jazz-trash sensibility to the proceedings--entirely apposite in this wildly eclectic setting.

Listen, these guys are the real deal. I expect to hear a lot more from them in the near future. Highest recommendation.
