Customer Reviews:
Now it makes more sense..........2007-07-30
It appears that some of the most memorable score cues from the movie are actually from Mark Isham's soundtrack "Life As A House" (Listen to track 11 from "Life As A House" for example.)
Now I'm beginning to understand why there seems to be such a paucity of score cues on this CD. I think either Glass' score was partially rejected or he only scored a small part of the movie to begin with.
Where's my Philip Glass? .......2007-07-30
The other music on the cd is perfectly fine. It's good music actually, but I wanted more score. I was hoping the two score cues would be longer than they were.
Philip Glass only used a few motifs (three tops) in the movie...would it have been so hard to include all of them (as opposed to 1)?
Shame on Decca...unless they're planning on releasing a score-only CD.
Hope they do.
This is an unique soundtrack.......2007-07-29
This is an unusual soundtrack. It combines instrumental music with opera music. This disc also has two songs from popular singers. I love the track "Sway" by Michael Buble. I also enjoyed the track "Mambo Gelato" These two tracks make me want to grab someone and dance. The opera tracks on this disc are excellent. The best of the bunch is "La Donna E Mobile" by Joseph Calleja. This track is very uplifting and playful. "Cielo E Mar" is a romantic sounding track from Pavarotti. "Nessum Dorma" is a really soothing track from Pavarotti too. He has such a powerful voice. Philip Glass is a talented composer for the film. I love his instrumental restaurant theme here. It is a beautiful piece of music. "Count On My Love" is a great song that fits the tone of the movie well. I really enjoyed listening to the music on this soundtrack.
More score, less opera please.......2007-07-28
Phillip Glass's score was exceptional, why there isn't more of it on the rousing soundtrack, I can't imagine, but the lack leaves a hole in the overall CD.
Best movie soundtrack of 2007.......2007-07-28
There isn't much good to say about the film but this soundtrack really is beautiful.

Customer Reviews:
Very Good Opera Mix CD.......2007-04-24
For someone that isn't too keen on Opera, I really enjoyed this CD. As a choreographer, having famous operatic themes without lyrics is such a blessing. The only criticism I have about the CD is that the volume level isn't consistent throughout, and for some of the songs it is extremely low. I had to constantly adjust the volume from one song to the next, even within one track.
A real treat.......2006-09-25
This wonderful CD, is a collection of some 23 arias, drawn from the works of such maestros as Pietro Mascagni, Guiseppe Verdi, and Engelbert Humperdinck (no, the German composer...sorry, I couldn't resist!). All of the tunes sound excellent, performed to perfection by Russian-American conductor and arranger Andre Kostelanetz and his orchestra. Overall, I found this to be a real treat to listen to, with lively arias that will not send any passionate music fan to sleep. I especially loved Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana, Verdi's Celeste Aida, and of course Bizet's March of the Toreadors.
So, if you like could orchestral music, then I must say that you will like this CD. I love it and give it my highest recommendations!
Wonderful orchestral rendering of opera classics!.......2004-08-10
Opera fans will enjoy this collection of celebrated arias without vocals for rest and relaxation. From the thrilling "March of the Toreadors" to the plaintive "Madame Butterfly" this CD is a great background for easy listening, romantic dinners, or just the drive to and from work. Even people who don't like opera can enjoy this one.
nice music incorrect tempi.......2003-01-03
This CD is great for listening and, perhaps, for singing along a few passages (e.g. "..la speranza!") but NOT for actual singing practice. The tempi, while sweeping and engaging, can easilty throw you off, particularly the omissions of certain phrases or simply jumping to ba-boom conclusion. For those who like the music minus singing, it offers instruments taking up the voice parts. The order of the tracks is listed incorrectly, so you'll have to make your own list to paste on the back of this CD. Don't even think of turning on your metronome, just enjoy the music. Barcarolle from Tales of Hoffmann is the best piece.
Song list incorrect, though !.......2002-05-24
In the back cover of song list, "Celeste Aida" is printed BEFORE "La donna e mobile", while in the song list inside, there is no such song. In reality, the disk does have a "Celeste Aida", but it's number 14, as the list in Amazon.com. This "Celeste Aida" has the complete tune compared to that of "Verdi Without Words".
The music is marvellous.

This is a remarkable collection: two and a half hours' worth of opera arias, duets, and a couple of choruses, and nary a dud among them. All the stars are here, from Alagna to Schwarzkopf, with stops at Gheorghiu, Callas, Bjoerling, Dessay, Gedda, Carreras, Popp, Domingo, Norman--and a bunch of others. And the repertoire is wisely chosen: the gorgeous Flower Duet from Lakme, de los Angeles singing Bizet's Habanera from Carmen, the famous Pearl Fishers duet (Gedda, Blanc), Wally's exit into the snow from La Wally (Callas), the Barcarolle from Tales of Hoffmann (Jessye Norman and Ann Murray), "Largo al factotum" with an energetic Thomas Hampson as The Barber of Seville, Domingo in "Celeste Aida," countertenor David Daniels in a Handel aria, the heavenly "Song to the Moon" from Rusalka, sung as in a dream by Lucia Popp, Caballe as Madama Butterfly, and many more--37 tracks in all. Even if you already own some of these, having them all in one place makes for breathless, glorious listening. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Heavenly..........2007-04-03
I am not particularly a fan of opera but do realize it's merit. I also appreciate the talent of it's artists. This 2 disc set offers a wide, wisely chosen selection from most of the popular operas, performed by most of the world's greatest singers, present and yesteryear. Yes, you will find legends such as Maria Callas to Pavarotti to the up and coming Roberto Alagna and Angela Gheorghiu; sharing space on these discs. Economically, I was able to obtain this set for under ten bucks. My research could not find a more varied set with such a stellar roster at any price. It will impress any novice to seasoned collecter. I wish that EMI annotated the set better, a brief synopsis of each track would have tutorial value. The sound reproduction flows seemlessly from track to track.
Nice collection of major figures.......2007-01-04
This is billed as "the greatest opera stars on one double album for the first time ever."
Many major voices of the first part of the past half century are presented on this CD (e.g., Shwartzkopf, Moffo, Freni, de los Angelos, Sutherland, Callas, Gedda, Merrill, Bjoerling, Pavarotti, Sutherland, Domingo, et al.). Also represented are some more contemporary singers, among whom are Kanawa, Gheorgiu, Alagna, Dessay, and so on).
So, a nice album. But we are also reminded of the absence of some major figures on CDs (such as Richard Tucker, who is little represented on CDs). . . . Hopefully, in future years, more of those glorious voices will become accessible on CD.
Gran recopilatorio.......2004-02-29
blend of great opera for novice or opera buff!.......2003-03-03
Beautiful music for anyone. Even those I know who generally dislike opera have taken an interest! These are truly highlights of some of the greatest peices...breathtaking voices...relaxing and yet movingingly passionate. I reccomend this for anyone wanting a varied and yet stunning collection.
Nessun dorma!.......2002-12-01
This set of two CDs is a great way to listen to some highlights from many different operas when you aren't in the mood to listen to a full opera. Many of your favorite arias are here, such as Nessun Dorma, Habanera, Non piu andrai etc. But what I liked most about it is that it features many different artists. While I love my Pavarotti and Domingo albums, it is nice to hear other singers.
Also, hearing some pieces that sounded familiar have gotten me interested in operas I haven't heard or seen before, such as the Flower Duet from Lakme. I've heard that before--but where? Probably in some car commercial...
This music will haunt you, and is wonderful for listening to while driving or just sitting. Try it with headphones on so the rest of the world goes away.

Subtle but amazing in every way.......2005-07-26
This is truly a beautiful soundtrack. Like the film, it is probably not very well known by many people, but a gem nonetheless. It has several themes that are played with variation throughout the soundtrack. Overall, the sound is very consistent; delicate strings and piano, slightly melancholy and mysterious at times. It is a little repetitive, but you won't care because the melodies are so exquisitely crafted. This is the kind of cd that you can just sit and listen to and let your mind wander, or read to and not have to worry about one track being calm and quiet and the next being loud and blaring. For such a short movie, you have a good amount of playing time to feast your ears on.
Soundtrack is a work of art itself.......2005-04-12
I love this soundtrack! It stands alone as beautiful, haunting, alluring, and innocent--just as Griet herself was in the film. Desplat perfectly captured the spirit of the story, enhanced and deepened a plot that was less than stellar.
Scarlett Johanssen's acting is superb, as well as Essie Davis and Colin Firth. The story, though, was a bit tired--pretty housemaid/jealous wife/do-nothing husband. Its portrayal of Vermeer and his wife was a disservice to the real people, even though it is a fictionalized account.
The two best tracks on this album are 'Griet's Theme' and 'Colours in the Clouds'. While I'm not keen on seeing the film again, this soundtrack is a treasure. It's a real work of art, second only to Vermeer's work.
fine film.......2005-02-04
a fine film of one man's fantasy of a vermeer painting. Strictly fiction based on an actual work of art. I enjoyed the film, though not a great film. Vermeer's character remined basically unchanged or developed during the film. Still a worthwhile fine movie. Remember, it is all fiction, except for the lovely work which thankfully is real. Who knows? She was lovely.
A sumptuous film score.......2004-05-16
Earlier this winter I saw "Girl With a Pearl Earring" in the movie theater. I loved the concept of taking a famous painting and turning it into a fictional story like author Tracy Chevalier did with Johanne's painting of a girl with a pearl earring. The film was a stunning piece of work. Colin Firth as Vermeer and Scarlett Johansson as Griet put in excellent performances as did the supporting cast. What really made the film for me was the haunting film score. The music really shaped the mood of the film. I finally found a copy of the soundtrack for "Girl With a Pearl Earring" today. I knew right away that I had to buy it. Listening to the music sent chills down my spine. Alexandre Desplat did an amazing job as composure as well as conductor for the film score. It brought back images of the film. I agree with the other reviewer, Alexandre's film score should have received an Oscar nod. It is truly one of the best film scores I have ever heard in my 30 years of life (well, almost 30 years in a few months). The music isn't bombastic and loud like a lot of film scores tends to be. It is very subtle and breathtaking to this music lover's ears. Anyone who has seen and loved the movie, get this soundtrack. It is a nice reminder of one of the best art house films ever made.
A pleasing and haunting score.......2004-03-02
I first saw Girl with a Pearl Earring at Telluride by the Sea in late September 2003.
Immediately, the score struck me as something beautiful and unique. It was lovely against the gorgeous spectrum of the film.
I immediately wanted to purchase it,
but only until six months later is it now available.
I highly suggest purchasing this disc, even if you have not seen the film.
The score was robbed of an Academy Award nomination

Opera classics set to a groove beat.......2006-09-30
Adam Plack grew up trying to practice classical violin while his father played jazz and R&B records. He couldn't help but get distracted and jam along. Thus the idea for this CD, which couples multi-tracked operatic vocals by female singer Chen Reiss and classical-style accompaniments by pianist Ilan Rechtman and his string orchestra with sultry voice-overs and chillin' club-style drum beats. Think: Enigma with opera instead of Gregorian chant. Classical sources include Delibes' "Lakme," Bizet's "Carmen," Puccini's "Tosca" and "Madame Butterfly," Dvorak's "Rusalka," Massenet's "Cherubin," and cantatas by Bach and Handel. While the programmed beats here get a little monotonous after a while, and could be broken up more for the sake of interest, they do at least change noticeably from piece to piece. And I like the idea of this album: opera you can dance to! It more aptly fills the role of "Opera Crossover" than the work of such groups as Amici Forever and the Opera Babes, which also modify operatic arias, but not always in a distinctly modern manner. Don't be put off by the cover art of "Coco de Mer," which borders on the pornographic (it features a coconut, considered in India and Africa to be a sexual symbol, that is partially peeled to make it look like a woman's vagina). Sure to be considered graphic and offensive by some, this obtusely male-oriented marketing strategy makes even less sense than usual when considering that the coconut and its erotic symbolism have little or nothing to do with European opera set to a beat. Most of the song lyrics, with the exception of those from "Carmen," are about love, not sex. There is a difference, gentlemen. But my advice to prospective purchasers is to simply ignore the cover if it bothers you and enjoy the music. Try also "MCMXC A.D." by Enigma, "Mystic Spirit Voices" or "Illumination" by Lesiem, and any of the releases by Amici Forever and the Opera Babes.
This album will blow your mind.......2005-06-03
i am into eclectic music...i loved the operas and rest of the album...
hey...try Dr. Draw' "The City" too (Eugene Draw)
Sounds interesting enough..........2004-01-12
I personally don't listen to actual Opera because I find most of it to be boring but after Sarah Brightman's success took off with mega hits like "Time To Say Goodbye" and "Eden" several other acts followed suit in what's now known as classical crossover and it spread like a wildfire, catching flame by sparking the interests of unexpected listeners. Many "purists" criticize this genre for not using all the proper techniques when handling the voice and for sugarcoating these respected arias with pop beats, and whatnot, but I think it's a great way to draw people in that would normally steer far away from music such as this.
'Coco de Mer' (or "Tantric Coconut"), which was produced, arranged and conceived by Adam Plack was my first classical crossover buy in a long time and while I wasn't entirely disappointed I've heard far better. This reaches new grounds for it blends in nusoul grooves with downtempo Cafe del Mar-type beats (there's even a semi-rap part on Delibes' "Lakme") and I imagine the two could possibly coexist in the future sometime but this album needs a ton of improvement... Just as another reviewer stated, it was a good idea but poorly executed. Most of the songs don't work well but "Opus" is a beautiful piece (the only without singing) with strings and piano and the ever-enchanting melody of Dvorak's "Moon (Rusalka)" is almost worth the purchase alone! Chen Reiss has a lovely voice that reminds me a lot of Sasha Lazard and I also enjoy her operatics on "Respect" and "Col Patir" but she falls a bit short in sustaining my attentive ears.
All in all this isn't horrible (I appreciate the word translations inside the booklet) but I'd recommend Paul Schwartz's 'Aria 2: New Horizon' over this any day. As of this moment he's the best modern composer I've yet to discover.
good idea badley executed.......2003-03-13
this is an amazing idea but i am sorry to say the album is not as "beautifully woven together" as the description would have you believe. the timing is all wrong. if you are an avid opera fan you may be distracted by the strong bass and the heavily digitized sound. i have played this album in several different stereo systems and it definitely has a different sound in each, suggesting a bit more studio time may have been necessary. im sure there are a lot of people who would really dig this album. but for a modern ambient dinner music, ill stick with Dead can dance.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS ALBUM!!!.......2003-01-28
Finally Opera music that I can play while I have friends over for cocktails and drinks. This is a fantastic blend of cool new grooves with Operatic voices that is perfect for when I lounge around or get busy in the bedroom. Give me more!!!

In the latter part of the 20th century, flamenco music emerged from its folkloric roots in southern Spain and embraced other musical genres. Gipsyland, led by guitarist Antoine "Kiko" Motos, have been leaders of that outward movement. This CD is the follow-up to Gipsyland's debut recording, Viva la Música, and it marries flamenco to North African, North and South American, and Caribbean grooves. The group manages to keep flamenco's festive, Moorish styling intact on the hip-hop/rave-flavored selections "Nuestro" and "Fin de Verano," and on the Brazilian samba-batucada beats of the Carlinhos Brown track "Muevete." "Dile Compadre" is a moving merger of salsa and house music, and the Egyptian-Armenian diva Anoushka sings on the evocative track "Salaam," which reveals flamenco's Arabic roots. From castanets to the clave, Gipsyland excels in all kinds of dance music. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Brilliant artwork -- Brilhante!.......2007-06-16
I've heard the first CD "Viva La Musica" in Brazil and loved it. When I noticed that they have a second CD I bought it. Unfortunetly my first copy was stolen when my cd player was stolen too. "Sambame" is wonderful, but the track "Eres por ti" is the best for me, because the balanced mix between dancefloor bass and beats and traditional gipsy rumba. "Salaam" is another great tune, where they go further in approaching to the arab rythm, following the path of other groups like Alabina.
Conheci o primeiro CD "Viva la musica" no Brasil e amei.
its actually a four and half star cd.......2003-12-15
this cd is awesome. i mean i dont listen to it quite as much as i used to, but whenever i do, i just love it. i think i played it too much when i first got it thats why, i burned out on it. but now its alrihgt. its a well made cd, it has a lot of good rythems and beats. good use of instruments to make a pure, well mixed sound. the vocals are really good too. i would reccomend this cd. i bought it as a gift twice already because this cd makes me feel good and happy when i read it, so i figured i would give the gift of happiness. if that doesnt tell you how good of a cd it is, then what does?
Outstanding.......2002-09-21
Much better than 1st album "Viva La Musica" (which I loved). More variety and original, catchy tunes on this one. A must have album for fans of Gipsy Kings.
Not as festive as Viva La Musica.......2002-08-25
Loved their fantastic first CD -- especially since it was a divergence from the standard Gipsy Kings. Unfortunately, they regress back to their roots. A poor showing this time.

Customer Reviews:
Mantovani's Eighth Million Seller Arrives on CD!.......2003-08-20
Italia Mia was the great maestro Mantovani's eighth, million selling recording in 1961. It stayed in the US charts for 50 weeks! This is not surprising because the Italian melodies enhanced by Mantovani's gifted arrangements are still attracting listeners today who may hear some of the renditions by the current day orchestra bearing the Mantovani name. These original recordings are even more spectacular to hear, and we are indebted to the producers at Vocalion for starting the process of re-releasing Mantovani's music on CD. Some of the CD's selections have not heard for decades, such as the hauntingly beautiful "Come Back to Sorrento," the stunning "Mattinata," the ever popular Dean Martin classic, "Return to Me": a heart tugging "Vissi D'Arte," and a very lively and clever arrangement of the "Bersagieri March," among many other Italian classics. As a special bonus, Vocalion added a scarce recording from 1969 Germany, never before issued in any format in the US, Japan or UK. Perhaps for the very first time, avid fans will hear Mantovani's distinctive strings playing many beautiful German melodies. To sum up, this two CD set is a glorious treat for those who can never get enough of the Mantovani sound, or who have difficulty finding the original master recordings on CD.
The meliorating music of Mantovani makes its marvelous return.
