So often, operatic crossover discs seem to be devised according to marketing surveys, with the star swooping into the recording studio between engagements with minimum thought or care. Jose Cura's first crossover disc, Anhelo, is quite the exception. The tenor not only sings but has orchestrated and conducted several numbers as well, which is only the most tangible evidence of the thought and feeling he's put into this. The emphasis is on ballads--which is only fitting for an album whose title means intense, suffocating desire--though there are also folk-like songs and instrumental cuts, one of which Cura composed himself in a neo-Puccinian style. Some of the songs have orchestrations, but the instrumentation is mostly spare: often acoustic guitar or piano and, in one cut, only solo voice. Cura may not have the most flexible instrument, yet he scales it down extremely well here. Clearly, this disc didn't just arise out of a career strategy but as a sincere desire to communicate. And it does. --David Patrick Stearns

5 out of 5 stars Mellow Magic.......2005-12-16

In this exquisite CD of Argentine music, you will not hear Jose Cura sing with the full power of his magnificent operatic voice, but rather with a gentle beauty that is captivating. He shows us his heart in these songs, and what he is capable of doing artistically as well as his commitment to excellence, beyond his career as an international opera superstar. The repertoire consists of music by 20th and 21st century composers: Cura himself (2 tracks), Carlos Guastavino (8), Carlos Lopez Buchardo (2), and Julian Aguirre, Alberto Muzzio, Jorge Cardozo, Alberto Ginastera, Ariel Ramirez, Astor Piazzolla, Hilda Herrera, and Maria Elena Walsh each contributing one selection apiece.

The arrangements (by Cura) and musicianship are superb, featuring the brilliant talents of Eduardo Delgado (piano) and Ernesto Bitetti (guitar). Cura also conducts, and also had a hand in the design of the booklet insert, which has terrific liner notes, recording info, and lyrics in Spanish, English and French. There are also lots of photographs, and one of Cura as a toddler at the piano that is priceless.

There are 4 instrumentals on the CD, and the transcription of Piazzolla's "Adios Nonino" for piano quintet is stupendous, and another big favorite is Ginastera's "Cancion del arbol del olvido." There is nostalgia, sweet simplicity, and a purity to this album that may not appeal to those who like their music always on full throttle, but it is rich with a depth of soul and emotion, and is a rare encounter in this age of sound overkill. Total playing time is 62'08.

5 out of 5 stars Anhelo.......2001-11-20

I discovered Jose Cura through Sarah Brightman's "Time to Say Goodbye." What a find I made! This man has the most expressive voice. Full of emotion and grandure, but not to the point of being ridiculous.

"Anhelo" is the perfect introduction to this wonderful man's voice. It is traditional Argentine music. The first time I heard "La Rosa" I was literally crying by the time it was over. The production is not over the top. You can hear Jose, without fighting the orchestra. Even if you don't speak Spanish, you can understand what he's singing through the emotion he gives each song.

Where most operatic voices do not understand that not every song is an aria, Jose does. He, like Sarah Brightman, can sing the opera with the "pop." Pick up this CD, with the bath and wine ready!

5 out of 5 stars A large voice sings small.......2001-06-01

Many opera singers cannot seem to make their voices fit small or popular-type songs. The great Placido Domingo's pop albums are all disappointing: overproduced and underfelt. Jose Cura, on the other hand, gives these small songs from his homeland a warm, heartfelt treatment. The spare, always apt accompaniment adds to the poetic quality of the whole. This CD is a treasure.

5 out of 5 stars A Cura for Heartache.......1999-09-23

Musical wonderman José Cura conducts himself in this splendid collections of art songs from his native Argentina. Wrapping his big, rich, meltingly warm barti-tenor voice around each ballad of heartache and romantic longing, Cura beautifully conveys the emotion at the heart of the song; it's meaning comes clear even for us listeners who aren't up on our Spanish. Especially impressive are his top notes, which he deploys either forcefully or very soft and intimate, like a lover's whisper in one's ear. Superb support from Ernesto Bitetti and Eduardo Delgado on guitar and piano contribute to the aura of closeness surrounding this disc. Simply put, ANHELO is a beautiful album and one which deserves a place any serious music lover's collection. ¡Viva El Cura!

5 out of 5 stars Jose Cura's voice is truly magnificent!.......1999-09-22

I bought this CD after I heard Jose on Sarah Brighman's "Time to Say Goodbye." His voice is always so powerful, yet sweet that moves the hearts of those who listen to his music. He has truly put his heart into this CD. His feelings about Argentina is clearly reflected in all the songs that he included on this CD. HE will be the greatest tenor!!! He has all the qualities that a truly great tenor should! Let's wait for Jose's career to shine like no one else's.

5 out of 5 stars Tango at its best.......2001-01-26

Sexteto Mayor has moved the old tango to today's music values, without loosing the essence of the tango, the 2x4 rythm. It combines then two things, highly professionally executed music with the virtues of the Argentine tango. A perfect combination. Even if you are not a tango fan, you should not miss this one. This CDs reflects a performance that has today over 500 presentations around the globe, from China to Albulquerque, from Turkey to San Diego, and has performed in the best theatres and music center around the world. Do not miss it.

4 out of 5 stars Mixed emotions.......2000-07-20

I admit it, when it comes to tango, I tend to be a purist. Therefore, I still have a hard time accepting many of the latest "fusion" trends such as certain songs found in this CD which are not real tangos [e.g. "Ojos negros" a traditional Russian song, played in a tango tune] as well as the "bilingual" versions of some traditional tangos (sung with a pathetic accent, reminiscent of the early days of Julio Iglesias, I might add!)] The orchestra however, sounds wonderful, exceptionally balanced and very assertive.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive collection. A MUST have........1999-10-31

Sexteto Mayor has been known for years in Argentina as being some of the best in tango interpreting and playing. This production meets all expections. This is Argentinian Tango at its best. Great examples were chosen for this CD, I buy it often to give to friends that want to know about my Argentinian origins.

Product Description

This recording brings together a variety of choral works by 20th century Latin American composers, all of whom find inspiration in folk culture. Chief among the composers represented here is Ariel Ramirez. Born in Santa Fe, Argentina, he roamed the South American hinterland in his early twenties playing piano and studying regional musical traditions. After a brief stint in Buenos Aires, he spent several years in Europe, studying in Madrid and Vienna and teaching music in a German convent. Returning to South America in 1954, he completed his musical training in Buenos Aires, where his politically engaged popular songs rapidly earned him renown as a leader of the nueva cancion movement. His breakthrough onto the international stage came in 1967 with the first performance and recording of the Misa Criolla (Mass in Native Style). The success of this innovative work owes much to its timing. Set in Spanish rather than Latin, it was one of the first major masses composed after the Second Vatican Council mandated the use of the vernacular. It also profited from the periodÂ’s burgeoning interest in folk music. As a result, the work quickly captured the imagination of audiences worldwide and has received thousands of performances. The massÂ’s reception abroad, where its style was perceived as novel and exotic, actually helped stimulate appreciation for native culture among more skeptical audiences back in Argentina. Like all RamirezÂ’ major works, the Misa Criolla draws substantially on the folk traditions in which he immersed himself as a young man. There are complete English texts for all the works included in the program booklet.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Lovely and inspiring.......2007-01-11

I love this music, and found this CD to have lyrical interpretations of the variety of Latin American music represented by it. However, I was a wee bit disappointed in one thing. I had a previous tape (lost it) of much of the same music, and the performers were less professional, meaning that the music gained in earthiness which I felt to be a plus. As this recording was done by professionals, it is lyric, musical, and lovely, but lacks that unsophisticated touch which I had liked. Still a very enjoyable recording, though.

5 out of 5 stars Counterpoint's "Misa Criolla" is a gem .......2005-05-11

Ramirez' Misa Criolla is the epitomy of music that lets you know the minute you hear it that you are in South America. Additional Latin American folk songs combine to make this disk rich in a variety of moods and textures.

"Counterpoint" sing with clean precision creating a sound that feels more like a single instrument than the twelve or so singers who make up the group. Their virtuosity grows with every CD they produce. Add to this restrained but evocative instrumentation that makes the music sparkle and you find yourself enjoying the music as much as the performers clearly do.

      4 out of 5 stars A Daring Departure.......2000-04-20

As a long-time fan and student of the music of Astor Piazzolla, I consider 1955 to be the year he began the redefinition of the tango, burning many bridges in the process. Not just one, but two "radical" projects were embarked upon in that seminal year. Piazzolla took the traditional tango orchestra and pared it down to form his Octeto Buenos Aires. This new form angered the traditionalists and stunned the avant-garde with its powerful new sound. In it, two bandoneons do all the work of four or five, demanding a virtuoso proficiency on an already difficult instrument. The new Piazzolla composition, Marron Y Azul, introduced the electric guitar into tango for the first time, and is used in various ways throughout the album including as a substitute for bongos. Piano and violin took a greater rhythmic and harmonic role than traditionally. Piano solos of great technical difficulty are introduced. I consider Piazzolla to be the John Mayall of the tango; always exploring, always improvising and most importantly, always able to ferret out just the right musicians for the project at hand. Atilio Stampone, to mention one, here proves himself equal to the piano tasks demanded. If you are used to the traditional tango and unfamiliar with the work of Piazzolla, then you might find this work a little disconcerting. In view of the tango community's reaction to it, I find it daring. Traditional tunes like Cobian's "Los Mareados" are reworked to great effect and new works like "Marron Y Azul" are introduced. I mentioned two radical projects in 1955. If you can find the Piazzolla album "Paris 1955", compare and contrast the work he does there with the Paris Opera's Orchestra and the great French jazz pianist Martial Solal to the work he does the same year with his octet. The difference could not be more profound! Incidentally, five stars would not do that incredible album justice. Both Octeto Buenos Aires and Paris 1955 belong in any serious Piazzolla fan's collection as the work shows, within the space of one year, the astounding breadth of his talent and the promise of greatness to come.

        Album Description

A second volume in the series Music for Violin and Piano by Mexican Composers. The album title is after the 1953 piece El retrato de Lupe by Carlos Jiménez Mabarak (1916-1994). The other composers and their works are thoroughly discussed in the accompanying twenty-eight-page booklet of this classic Urtext presentation in deluxe slipcase. Luis Samuel Saloma Alcalá, violinist, conductor, and concertmaster of the National Symphony Orchestra, belongs to a family of musicians with a long tradition in Mexico. His grandfather was founder of the Saloma Quartet, the first chamber music ensemble in the country. The pianist on this album is Duane Cochran, a native of Detroit, a child prodigy who studied with György Sandor and who performs frequently in Latin America. He is also a noted choreographer, and director of the Aksenti Contemporary Dance Ensemble.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fleta and the Spanish repertoire.......2000-10-06

Although the international career of the Spanish tenor Miguel Fleta (1893-1938) was relatively brief (ten years or so), he was quite a hit in his time. Not only did he phenomenally succesfully perform in many important opera houses, he was also the creator of the role of Calaf in Puccini's opera 'Turandot' and thus the first tenor to sing the now so famous 'Nessun dorma'.

The selections on this CD, most of them of arias and ensembles from 'zarzuelas' recorded between 1927 and 1931, used to be some of my great favorites during the LP era, and I'm so glad I've found them again now on disc. They show Fleta's almost hypnotic use of legato, masculinity of tone and expression, and quite considerable dash. He was always able to apply rubati with amazing swellings and diminuendos all over the place and make, as it were, time stand still and yet keep the music moving forward. It seems to me that in the Spanish repertoire as found on this disc he was even more persuasive in doing just that. Just listen to the numbers (six total) from Arrieta's very melodious zarzuela 'Marina' wherein he is joined by several Spanish colleagues, notably Emilio Sagi-Barba, in duets, trios, a quartet, etc., and you just wish (I do, that's for sure) they had recorded it complete.

I find the other selections equally engaging. I must say that even though I hardly understand any Spanish, I feel drawn in every time I hear him sing these arias and songs. The very last number on this CD is actually not Spanish at all, although sung in that language. It is the famous Marseillaise, sung with chorus and quite stirringly so!

At all times Fleta seemed to be capable of creating a different mood for anything he sang, whether it was martial, tender, exuberant, nostalgic, or what have you. The voice must have been immensely powerful, yet he could come round with the most incredible pianissimi you ever want to hear. His vocal enunciation and style may not be 'politically correct' in the more streamlined times we live in today, but, when used with so much conviction and artistry, I can relish it any day. I'm listening to it now.
