This collection includes Ernesto Lecuona's complete 1954 recordings plus a series of 78s made in 1927-28. Ten of the recordings were previously unreleased. This is a lot of lightweight Cuban piano music to deal with at once, but it's definitely worth doing. Lecuona's music, which is having a major revival, may not be important. But it's consistently charming and entertaining. The 78s, which sound surprisingly good, reveal even more of a virtuoso than do the later recordings, but throughout we hear playing that expresses the spirit of the music extremely well. And yes, the famous Malagueña is here, sounding very sexy. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars Lecuona Plays Lecuona.......2007-05-12

Oh Boy! What can I tell you about this magnificent collection of musical jewels from our Maestro Lecuona. I bought the original Long Playing Record back in the 50's in my country.
I purchased it again shortly after my arrival to the US, and I was lucky enough to buy it on DVD from Amazon, once I found out they had it.

5 out of 5 stars Lecuona the Cuban pianist is Great!.......2005-08-17

In my opinion this is one of the best CD's from Lacuona, Most of his piano compositions are recorded here (original ones), What, Ms. Leslie Gerber forgot to mention is that Mr.Lecuona was a band leader,"Lecuona and the Cuban Boys", remembers him? Or maybe she does not have sufficient information about him. The music from Lecuona still is very well alive today. I came across his recordings on my own, no one ever told me about this great pianist. I happened to hear the Malague?a by another great Cuban composer and band leader Perez Prado (The Real Mambo King) in one of his albums and Lecuona was the author. That got me interested in him. I'm pretty sure that Ms.Leslie Gerber does not mean any harm trying to put this composer down. It's just that maybe all she knows is Gerber baby food stuff!

4 out of 5 stars The Cuban Chopin.......2004-06-18

What a great album and great value. There is music here that will make you smile, break your heart, inspire you, and Lecuona's skill is breathtaking. If you enjoy classical piano music (with a Cuban/Spanish influence), you'll love this. No, it doesn't display the virtuosity, complexity or seriousness of Lizst, Chopin or Beethoven, but it's fun, beautiful, dramatic yet accessible. You'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars Lecuona, the musical genious . . . . ........2002-10-16

I feel compelled to identify myself first. I am Cuban born who arrived in the US in 1960 at the age of 16 years old. I am a US citizen since 1965 and a US Army Veteran of Viet Nam. I will die defending the right Ms. Leslie Garber has of expresing her opinions. But what I will not condone is her ignorance. To say that Lecuona writes "lightweight Cuban piano music" and that "Lecuona's music may not be important" is to show ignorance. A musician that composes GREAT music in several genres of the music world, a musician that in all genres has highly succesful pieces, and, a musician that after many years, (70-80 years) is still heard and admired can not be called other than MUSICAL GENIOUS and a CLASSICAL MUSICIAN. His music is so beautiful that it will live forever. From his Afro-Cuban compositions, to his romantic popular boleros, to his valses, to his Zarzuelas, Lecuona demonstrates once and again, time after time his immense musical talent. His Afro-Cuban "Cafetal", his romantic boleros "Noche Azul" and "Amapola", His vibrant and colorful "Comparsa" and "Andalucia", his classical Valses, just to mention a few things, makes Lecuona to stand together with the great musicians of the world. The fact that Hollywood made a film around "Estas en mi corazon" and that great singers, like Placido Domingo, want to sing Lecuona's music speaks immensely well of Lecuona/s greatness. The fact the popular instrumental orchestras like Faith, Conniff, Mantovani, Cugat have arranged and interpreted a lot of Lecuona's music also says a lot about Lecuona's versatility in his work. Lecuona is probably important to many millions of people and his music is certainly not lightweight. And if the only thing Ms. Garber can say about "Malaguena" is that "it sounds very sexy" is to demonstrate that she does not know a thing about music. It definitely does not give her the priviledge of commenting about Lecuona's music.

5 out of 5 stars LECUONA IS NO LIGHTWEIGHT.......2002-02-27

Lecuona is one of the most important composers of Latin-America. He is by no means the "unimportant" and "lightweight" Leslie Gerber (whomever that may be) claims, having been hailed for performances of his earlier (and "less mature") works by the likes of Maurice Ravel.

In my opinion the highlight of the set is the devilish "La 32". It's also interesting to compare his interpretations of the same works at different times in his career, like the two recordings of "Por que te vas?" and "Amorosa", especially keeping in mind that Lecuona seldom notated and improvised quite frequently, leaving the transcription work to his students.

The inspired moods in which Morton Gould and his orchestra were inmersed when this recording was made was simply anthologic . Gould literally caught the perfect balance and the idomatism of Ernesto Lecuona , a cuban composer and author of Malagueña An emblematic song played for artists of the high of Paco de Lucia , Carlos Montoya , Jose Feliciano and the most famous orchestras of the world as Paul Mauriat ,or Frank Purcel .
This CD provides you a selection of well known and unknown pieces of that talented musician . It is a magnificent opportunity to know the high lyricism and latin flavour of Ernesto Lecuona .
Bravo for Morton Gould!

4 out of 5 stars This material is worth more than a casual listen.......2001-01-09

In the 50's and 60's one of the biggest artists on RCA Red Seal was Morton Gould and his Orchestra. Recording staples like Grand Canyon and Billy the Kid kept the record company in the spotlight, but occasionally the conductor was able to do what he wanted. These were produced as Jungle Drums in 1955 and More Jungle Drums in 1964 Gould wrote the transcriptions of these piano pieces for these releases. RCA has digitalized the originals and presented them here as a set. The recording quality is first rate and packaging with information on the composer is welcome. This is a wonderful CD to experiment with to discover composers that are not in the mainstream. Well worth the discounted price here too.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Cuban Piano Sampler.......2005-09-04

This is a fine recording of some Cuban piano pieces by a relatively unknown Cuban pianist. It compares well to the Nohema Fernandez and Juana Zayas recordings, as well as with the authoritative Thomas Tirino renditions, while demonstrating a unique approach. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome performer.......2002-03-27

This album touched my heart. The artist has a true understanding of cuban music and style. I have never heard Cervantes's Serenata Cubana played so elegantly, beautiful tone and phrasing. His Lecuona is full of rhythm and big tone. In the style of the great masters.
This album is a must, I recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Latin Classicism.......2002-03-19

An excellent series of performances thoughtfully complied on this CD. Definitely worth the time to listen.

1 out of 5 stars Wonderful Saumell and Cervantes-Horrific Lecuona.......2000-07-28

This CD presents a Cuban pianist playing Cuban music. One would assume deep understanding of styles, and conception. However, such is not the case 100% unfortunately with all the music here. Spengler plays beautiful Saumell, nice Cervantes (though not as good as some other Cuban pianists). The Lecuona however I must say, is some of the WORST playing committed to disk of these pieces. I am embarrased as a Cuban, that one of our own should not understand Lecuona's music, style, and forms better.

Still the Saumell is really wonderful. Buy the disk for this music. However, Listen to Nohema Fernandez or Frank Fernandez Play Cervantes in their recordings for peerless interpretations of these works, who are also Cuban pianists.

For Lecuona, once again-there is no competition in my opinion-get Tirino's complete series on the BIS label (who started the revival of Lecuona's music these days) and also get Lecuona's own recordings as a point of reference.

5 out of 5 stars Sentimental Favorite.......2006-11-30

My parents purchased this album back in the sixties, and I grew up listening to it. For this reason alone I love it. Even after all this time I still love these arrangements. Mr. Gould's orchestra give polished performances, the tone colors are varied and vivid. You will be carried to exotic locales by this music. It's a classic!

5 out of 5 stars Jungle Fun.......2005-11-23

More soothing renditions by Morton Gould and composer Ernesto Lecuona. "Andalucia" is simply beautiful on this album. It has a strong melody that would sound good in almost any setting. My daughter brought this in for her second grade class, and most of the kids an parents liked the music. Some of it is very cinematic, and I think that's what some of them reacted too...made then think of old films. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars interesting change of pace.......2003-11-06

I had originally purchased this CD because I thought the music was similar to Les Baxter, Martin Denny, and Arthur Lyman (I made this assumption based on the picture on the jacket). I thought it was another "exotica" album. Boy, was I wrong! While the arrangements all have lush melodies, the music is symphonic in nature and have great orchestral arrangements. I like this CD a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing music many classical pianists don't know about.......2005-07-21

In 2005, if you haven't heard of composers like Nobre, Guarnieri, Nepomuceno, or Levy, you are missing out on some of the greatest 20th century piano music ever composed. Much of the music on this album, not commonly known to those of us who know our Schumann, Chopin, Bach, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and so forth, is comparable in quality to that of Schumann. What if there were suddenly discovered twenty or thirty pieces of the highest quality of piano music that Schumann had composed but no one had known about? This album is like that for me. The styles of these Latin American composers run the gamut from late Romantic or what is sometimes called "Impressionist" to challenging Bartok-like Ginastera-esque gems, with a few charming salon pieces to give variety to the mix.

Clelia Iruzun is a ferocious, amazing pianist, with fire like Argerich and tonal subtlety like Horowitz.

If you like classical piano music and great piano playing, you must hear this album. I don't know why there aren't more reviews of it, or why there are no sample clips posted (I am writing this in July 2005, so maybe they'll see the light and post some in the future).

1 out of 5 stars ANOTHER DISASTROUS COPY CAT.......2000-07-28

Here we go again. Yet another pianist recording the piano music of Lecuona. Forget that its for EMI: Of all the available recordings: this is without question, the WORST. No technical prowess here, little color variation, no understanding of styles (does she know what a danza Cubana or malaguena is..or a Vals Brillante-weh!). The tempi are so slow, so unstylistic, so contrived, there is no Latino essence at all in this music. It sounds like quite over pompous salon music. The pianist is terrible. And the sound quality of the disc sounds like she was recorded under the English Channel!

As a Cuban, I find the minimization of our great national treasure, Lecuona...offensive in this collection. Go out and by the real thing: the Tirino BIS Lecuona series and get Lecuona's own recording as compliment-go experience what is Cuba!

3 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected.......1999-09-26

Although thoroughly pleasing, this music only intermittently sounds Latin. And quite unlike Gershwin to be sure. I was reminded rather of Granados in the best moments (and of Scott Joplin is the less inspired ones...)
