Whatever happened to...?.......2002-12-04

I really hate it when this happens. An artist releases two dope songs and then drops off the face of the Earth. The soulful R&B trio Divine took their song "Lately" all the way to #1 in 1998, but did anyone pick up their album? No, and I can't understand it.

Although "Lately" is arguably the best song on the album, none of the other songs are really worth skipping. There are other great ballads like "I Wish" and "Sweet Essence" (the latter was written and produced by then-unknown India.Arie), and their cover of George Michael's "One More Try" is brilliant. The ladies also bring their soulful harmonies to fast songs like "Good `N Plenty", but don't worry; the songs still work.

Some of the lyrics in the fast songs may come off a little corny at times, but that doesn't get in the way of this great album. Listen to it and you'll see.

People shouldn't judege the album by their singles. They got some really good songs on here like the hit single "Lately" "It's About time", & "My Love". Divine need to come out with a new album.

This CD is basically to hip hop what Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works II is to electronica: Extremely different, groundbreaking, beautiful, sometimes disturbing and self-indulgent, the amplified and distorted musings of a man who has temporarily gone mad with the beauty of the world and his own inner torment. The worst you can say about this CD is it's so introspective you have to really want to contemplate the roots of Divine Styler's angst to fully "get it." Like Sonic Youth on their first album, Divine Styler was on this disc willing to be noisy just for the sake of the noise, the venting, and the pure self-expression that came with it. Some incredible rhythmic experiments here too, to which a few non-conformists including myself danced our asses off repeatedly in the early nineties while more conventional folks hugged the walls and scoffed. Ten or twenty years from now maybe another hip hop artist will come along who is, for a brief period, as uniquely creative and anguished as Divine Styler was during the making of this album. Totally different from 95% of Wordpower 2 (though there is one beautiful spoken-word/acoustic track on W2 that evokes memories of Walls) and his relatively conventional earlier stuff. Inspiring to those who value genuineness and defiance of genre boundaries, terrifying and unpleasant to others. Thank God there are still a few copies floating around.

No rap CD is more important to me than SPIRAL WALLS. I didn't really understand it at first. It makes absolutely no concessions to the listener, or to any preconceptions about good or bad music, or rap or non-rap. Divine Styler was clearly a man possessed; he howls, whispers, gurgles and raps his way through rock, folk, and musique concrete tracks with utter abandon. The central theme is religion; nearly every track refers to Allah in some way or another. But there's no peace to be had here; DS seems to be performing a spiritual self-exorcism, and he pledges his devotion while surrounded by choirs of demons. No wonder this CD didn't sell any. To me, it points the way to a new rap aesthetic, one so fearless that even DS's peers weren't ready for it. A decade later, it's still way ahead of its time. That's slowly changing, and I predict that someday SPIRAL WALLS will get its due from a new generation of artists. Hopefully, I will be one of them. As an aspiring musician, this CD showed me that I wasn't the only one who loved rap but was desperately bored with the current scene, and wanted to violently disembowel it and build something new from the scraps (and whatever other scraps could be found). If you feel the same, hunt down a copy of this album. Just be sure to give it a few listens before passing judgment.

Amazing.......2003-04-04

This album tries to take a large step from where hip-hop (it's golden age) was at the time. Divine Styler meshes rap with spoken word and live instrumentation, and, on some pieces, seems to make the music speak the words that he doesn't speak himself. It's an amazing album from start to finish, and can take the listener on an incredible emotional ride. But it's so far left of center for what is produced by the typical rap artist that one really must be ready for it. I fell in love with this album when it came out, but recognize that not all listeners would agree with me.

Lucid dreaming? .......2007-02-13

Oh, please! I guess it depends on your idea of dreaming.

If you enjoy dozing off with the electric blender on high, then you've gotta place this in your bedroom.

Seriously -- the musicianship is highly competent, and there is an obvious commitment to the entire production. But this CD is not dreamy.

The album title nails it: "Rhythmic FISSION -- digital revisions of classic trax."

A Dreamy Listening Experience.......2004-06-01

This music is ideal accompaniment for lucid dreaming...Some of the tracks are loud,fast, and flashy ("Chasing Bartok" track #1, "Machines" track #10 come to mind) while others are fragile and soothing ("Addio Del Passato" and "Espirito"). Any one of these songs would be a superb compliment to a movie soundtrack--they all have this movie-dream-type quality to them, whether the movie/dream is creepy, beautiful, sad, or just plain experimental electronic music. Tracks 12-14 are heavy on vocals: Track 12 is very similar to the enigma song "Beyond the Invisible", while "I would Kiss You" makes me think of Loreena McKennitt with a dash of techno-renaissance flair, and finally "New World" has its good moments, but sounds a bit Disney-esque. "Addio Del Passato" and "Espirito" are the best tracks on the whole album; they sound like the ideal Anne Rice movie soundtrack selections, with "Addio" serving for any goth-vampire-opera-or-nightclub scenes, and "Espirito" for any childhood flashback scenes (hey, that's just what it sounds like!)...

If you've heard the "Verve Remixed" CDs, then I highly recommend buying this CD as well to help balance out your jazz with some classical. Plus the music is brand-spankin' new. So give this CD a chance.

Long a phantom of the underground hip-hop scene, Divine Styler has been met with extreme anticipation upon his return. Newly converted to Islam, he devotes much of Wordpower 2 to his faith. How Hip-Hop should Be..................2000-01-10

I've been listening to hip hop since '79 and I've heard many albums, but undoubtedly this is one of the BEST hip hop albums I've ever heard. The thing that really shines on this album is the positivity. No mediocre tales of guns, hoes, and drugs on this CD. Divine Styler who originally started out with Ice-t's Rhyme Syndicate in the late 80's released the album Wordpower which did well and contained a positive pro-black vibe. After severing ties with The Rhyme Syndicate and re-emerging on a new record label(Giant) he released the incredible "Spiral Walls Containing Autumns of Light" which was a blend of hip-hop, spoken word, industrial, speed metal, and acoustic. The content here was more mature, addressing his belief in the 5% Nation of Islam Theology, but is still easily embraceable by those of a different faiths. Now on his most recent Word Power 2:Directrix he chronicles how his beliefs and life have changed since his trip to Mecca where all Muslims make an excursion to pray and worship together. "Word Power 2" like his previous album don't necessarily fall under the tradionally sound of other hip hop albums with overused samples and beats. On this CD as with his previous album he plays all his own instruments and produces most of the album himself. The lyrical content on this album is very thought provocking. Take for example "Before Mecca". This song chronicles Divine's mentality before his conversion to Islam and his philosophical beliefs afterwards. The insert in the CD breaks down exactly what all the terms mean and exactly what he's saying on the song for those who aren't familiar with terms associated with his religion. Another stand out song is "Time Fold '79" which is a dedication to old school hip hop on which Divime reminisces on his days in New York during the time of Breakdancing and Graffitti. It brought back alot of memories for me too. Other notable songs are:"Hajii", "Nova" (with label mates Styles of Beyond), "Invitation to Life" and the last cut: "Gift of Love" which is an acoustic number with Divine doing spoken word. It's definately worth listening to.

WOW!!! What an album, great. Fially somebody with something to say thats positve without coming off soft. His flow is like the Nile his mic stance is strong and definate. Yet his words are sweet and knowledgable, some you rearly if ever see in any type of music let alone rap. The musical side of this album doesnt get put on the back burner because of content its elevated to another level! Undiscribable..

It's worth buying.......2000-10-14

This is the CD single format (just 3 tracks or less than 20 minutes) in England. The gimmick of this CD single is the poster of the gorgeous Enrique Iglesias. This CD is worth buying. All the tracks (Morales Radio Mix, Fernando G Club Mix and Mijango's Extended Mix) retain the vibe of the original version. They can get your feet to the dancefloor. Fernando G Club is the catchiest of all (it's frequently played in the discos and a shorter version of this mix is adapted in the Enrique Iglesias's English debut album). Morales Radio Mix and Mijango's Extended Mix sound siliar. Overall, this CD single is fantastic.
