Legend has it that the Garifuna culture sprung from the survivors of a shipwrecked slave vessel who swam ashore on St. Vincent Island in the Caribbean in the 16th century. There they intermarried with the local Carib and Arawak Indians and created a Garifuna music that blended West African drumming and Caribbean Indian group singing. The culture spread to Belize and Honduras and then to North American cities with emigration. Chatuye is a 10-man Garifuna band of Belizean and Honduran immigrants in Los Angeles. Although they sometimes play "punta-rock," a form of Garifuna with electric guitars and synthesizers, their new album "Heartbeat in the Music" is devoted to the traditional style, which consists entirely of vocals and percussion. From such minimalist materials, the band fashions an astonishingly melodic and intricate music. --Geoffrey Himes

Guitarist Chuck Loeb's 10th solo recording is a pleasant, mild-mannered affair suitable for anyone whose ear is favorably inclined toward the softer side of smooth jazz. Loeb ups the tempo periodically on In a Heartbeat (a title subtly linked to his own modest heart-murmur condition), but the overall mood is polite and relaxed, appropriate for anyone in a sitting-by-the-pool frame of mind. Accompanied at various times by soprano saxophonist Kim Waters (the slow-go "New Life"), saxophonist Andy Snitzer (on "Big Time," a sultry mix of sax and electric guitar), and reed player David Mann, Loeb gives the disc a slight Bob James-like urban edge, but never at the expense of the project's overall sheen of smoothness. Three vocal tracks will probably help Loeb pick up radio airplay, but the disc's primary highlights are found in three instrumentals: a flavorful nod to Wes Montgomery ("Sway"), the animated licks that close the breezy "Santa Cruz," and the warm melody that adorns "The Goodbye." --Terry Wood

This is the kind of jazz everyone likes. An essential for every collection. We love Chuck's smooth guitar sound!

    4 out of 5 stars Pure flava.......2005-02-18

I really can't say much 'bout this album. But this man made be the next millenium of smooth jazz. I first heard the song "Pocket Change" (one of my favorites), it just interests me since I'd been an instant fan of his 4 the first time. It came in 2001 and I heard it play on the smooth jazz station 107.5 WJZZ in Atlanta, GA.

I can't wait to pick up all of his albums I mean some ocassionally for example. That's an album I look forward of copping ASAP. God bless Chuck Loeb 4 doing such a wonderful job on this record.

And check out my man Jeff Golub too on past releases like "Do it Again" and "Soul Sessions" and especially my man Jeff Lorber on "Philly Style".

    5 out of 5 stars " the smoothest".......2004-04-14

I just purchased this disc and it is superb. I have several
of Chuck's CD's, and one fact is true: He is an amazing guitarist. Favorite tracks are "Pocket Change", North, South,East
and West; and in particular, "Big Time". At first this track
starts off slow, but the guitar playing progresses to a fiery,
slick, incredible show of Chuck's vast talent. I highly recommend
    this disc.

    5 out of 5 stars In a Heartbeat...................2003-02-27

Although "Heartbeat" isn't exactly hardcore Jazz, this particular cd is for the mature and discerning listeners. Most of the performances are reflective and thought provoking. Without a doubt, this is another great follow up to his earlier releases.

5 out of 5 stars Affectionate and heart-warming.............2002-09-22

The great composition and production from Chuck Loeb complements perfect with Vocals 'Vincent' and 'In a heartbeat', as well as all of the tracks from this album - Billy's Song, On and One/Fire, SoulMate, Goodbye etc... plays great for night occasions and as well if you prefer being alone.

    3 out of 5 stars Dubroom Review.......2001-11-09

Don't ask me why it took such a long time before there was a release of the dubs from these tracks used by the vocal harmony group Culture, I just don't know. Maybe more people like dubwize in this time, but it is a shame that only in the 90's this CD was released. 15 Dub shots from these classic reggaesongs we all know: Behold, Holy Mt. Zion and many more. Although released in the nineties, these dubs are old-skool. Roots reggae dubs in the style of the Goldmine Dub from the Revolutionaries (guess who laid down the riddims on this album) and Dub over dub. Yes, you wanted this album 20 years ago! It sounds like all the work is done in the seventies, when you listen to this record, you almost think you are back in that time when Rockers hit Jamaica. Most of the tracks on this album are hard steppers, but not all. You' also get a good listen to what the percussionist plays, as this gets overheard a lot of times in the vocals (original mix with the singers). When you love the vocals, you will love these versions as well. Culture's reggae is essential like Burning Spear and Israel Vibration. Only they have had their dubwize releases, now listen to the essential Culture in Dub!

4 out of 5 stars dub me mon.......2000-09-20

This cd offers excellent dub tracks to many of Culture's biggest hits, both from the classic trio lineup as well as some of the more modern ones, as well.

Dub fans and fans of Culture will both embrace what Culture has to offer and run with it. A nice album and lovingly done, as well. Yummy.

    3 out of 5 stars Decent middle-period release.......2002-03-21

In the '80s there sometimes was no escaping that thumping, mechanized, ugly drum sound, even in reggae. "Culture in Culture" a decent release from the great reggae group Culture's mediocre middle period, is nowhere near its best but neither is it the worst effort, occasionally rising above the drum sound and an extremely slow beginning. The second track, "Capture Rasta" is dancehall reggae, which I hate. The disc rights itself, though, with serviceable but not revelatory songs such as "This Way", "Step Along" and "Praise Him". "Soon Come," the next-to-last song, finally ups the ante with a distinctive, very strong tune about South Africa. Overall, average is the byword, worth having but not essential.

5 out of 5 stars BEST CULTURE CD.......2000-04-29

This has got to be the one of the best albums ever produced by Culture. If you like reggae, then you must try this cd! You will love every single song on it! Culture is one of the best reggae bands, ever. They put so much meaning behind their music and lyrics. "Culture In Culture" is an extremely powerful cd. There isn't one song on it that doesn't get you moving. :)

    4 out of 5 stars Dancehall's Finest.......2004-04-20

As a member of the younger generation I learn about the Dancehall greats from my parents. This CD was part of the lessons. Tony Rebel and Garnett Silk are masters of the dancehall art. Their songs all good have rhythm and flow well. What makes this CD special is among other things there are lyrics with a purpose. Rebel and Silk have put together songs that you can use to rock a party and at the same time manage to say something. Whether it's educating the youth in Rebel's "Good Instruction" or educating their peers in "Dancehall Principle", this album is full of track to which you can you can sit and listen or dance and listen with equal ease. Which is better than most music being put out which while admittedly have nice beats don't say much of anything.

4 out of 5 stars Hurry Come up!.......2001-08-25

two of reggea's preeminent artists team up with 100% conscious lyrics and booming dancefloor back beats. the last half of the cd includes dubs/remixes for seven of the preceding cuts which is a nice bonus. if you are a fan of Tony Rebel and or Garnet Silk dont miss this!

After the most searing Black Uhuru lineup broke up in 1985, Michael Rose (former Black Uhuru frontman) retired to Jamaica's hills to tend his coffee plantation, Sly and Robbie maintained "riddim twin" super-star status, and Duckie Simpson went on to form additional Uhuru incarnations. Rose, who made an early '90s comeback and immediately catapulted once again to reggae's frontlines, is joined here by S.A.N.E., Jamaica's top show band, who are live and in full effect in the City by the Bay. Rose's minor-key vocal flourishes and his rock & roll energy for 15 Uhuru solos--plus his own "Short Temper" hit (inspired by a feud with Simpson)--hit as hard as ever. Added bonus: the perfect balance achieved in this recording between the sounds of audience enthusiasm, bass-driven instrumentals, and Rose's muscular vocals. --Elena Oumano

This is on my list of top 5 live Reggae cd's. Along with Marley live at the Roxy, Babylon by Bus. This is the perfect cd for the Reggae fan who wants to get past the Bob Marley Legend barrier. Very energetic, perfect sound quality. A must for any Reggae fan. Also a great crossover for the Uhuru fans.

5 out of 5 stars Party in Section-- Live.......2003-05-21

This entire CD is off the hook. My wife and I went to see him live in Little Rock, Arkansas. His show made you get out of your seats and party. I do not like many live CDs, but Mr. Rose sounds are on point. It does not matter if he sings live or on his CD. If you are looking for a CD to start your collection, this has to be in your top two!(This CD is in my CD case every where I go).

4 out of 5 stars Derivative at times but certainly not weak.......2003-03-11

I take personal offense when someone calls any work by Michael Rose weak (see below). We're talking about one of the most talented singers in any genre of music here. Yes, he plays some songs from the early eighties, but those are undeniable classics- some of the best songs in the whole great genre of reggae. Musical accompaniment here is excellent, though not quite up to par with Sly and Robbie, of course. Why four stars and not five? Michael's solo embarkment, though successful and quite respectable, just can't kick it with Sinsemilla and Red from the Black Uhuru days. And to my friend from Kingston, reggae is a beautiful art form. It isn't what it was 25 years ago, but if we dwell on that this beautiful artform will wither away. This CD rocks on any day of the week.

1 out of 5 stars Awful and Pathetic.......2003-01-03

Weak and derivative, it's clear that there has not been a new idea in reggae in at least 30 years. Where are the visionaries, the leaders, and not the followers? This genre better develop another Marley or Tosh fast, or it will forever languish in this sort of "happy" yet forced drivel -- entertaining the masses at the expense of art and creativity.

Most reggae fans know seminal bassist Aston "Familyman" Barrett as the musical anchor and arranger for Bob Marley's Wailers. The association spans from the time when the Wailers meant the trio of Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer through Marley's solo career and until his untimely '81 passing. But even before his Wailers association, Familyman was reggae's first bass hero, and, if he had not been so busy touring with the Wailers, he would have appeared on even more artists' credit listings. As it stands, though, Familyman's catalog is voluminous enough, and this companion CD to Cobra Style pulls back the vocals that appear there and turns up the bass, the better to appreciate the master's tasteful growlings on dub or instrumental versions of seminal tracks. Dropping his weighty, core-of-the-earth notes with the precision of a stealth bomber, Familyman becomes the worthy star here in tracks like "Cobra Style" and "Pleasing," recorded at Marley's Tuff Gong studio, and "Rebel I Am," out of Randy's Studio 17. --Elena Oumano

4 out of 5 stars Dank, dank grooves.......2000-07-27

This album, is full of fat, fat, groovalicious groovages. Many of you have come across Aston Barrett before, as he spent several years as the preferred bass player of Bob Marley, and collaborated with Bob on most of his albums as bass guitarist. This album are essentially Barrett's "Dubs" of a series of great reggae melodies. His versions of tunes such as "Cobra Style and "Elegant Shape" are melodies deep, heavy grooves, driven by Barrett on the bass. The keyboards, rhythmic interplay and space-age effects are all offspring of the dominant bass line throughout the album. The Dubs are tastefully put together, and the album grooves extrememly heavily.

What I love so much about this album is the amount of space and simplicity that each dub reveals. Barrett's using simple ingredients here, bass, keyboard, guitar, and some wild syth effects. Each element operates independently, but at the same time is synchronous in groove with every other element. Amazing. It gives the music the ability to work with flow instead of clutter, and change it's shape and color without being noticed. Beautiful, and heavy in its groovatude.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best.......2006-08-21

I agree with the other reviwers that this is a great roots dub disc. The style is mesmerizing but not TOO spacey. However since there are very little vocals on the cd, credit must be given to the musicians particuarly my favorites...sly and robbie (drum and bass). Also the sound quality is wonderful...very open and spacious.... it deserves to be played on good audio systems.

      5 out of 5 stars DUBROOM.com Review.......2004-11-08

An album with a title like this one, containing heavy duty riddims and mixes from such as Ernest Hoo-Kim and Errol T is a must for every lover of Dubwise Style as I would say. But does the title cover the contents? I think so! That is why this album gets the highest possible rating of three full stars.
During his long time carriere, Gregory has put out some massive Roots and DUB tunes. Although Gregory Isaacs is mostly known for his smooth Lovers' Rock tunes, there is another side of the Cool Ruler and that side is prominently featured on this album. This side makes him interesting for the hard core Dub heads who you can't get into enjoying Lovers' Rock.

For those who are familiar with Gregory Isaac's great Dub album "Slum Dub": Dub A De Number One definitely contains the same atmosphere. The same thing you'll also find on the Blood and Fire Inner Circle release Heavyweight Dub. The music rocks hard and the echo's go straight to your head. Everything in in the "orthodox" Roots tradition.

But Dub Da Number One goes further than the two albums mentioned above. It contains a set of dubs "From the Archives" so to speak, mostly stuff which was previously unreleased (and I wonder why), but you'll also find dubs from a recent release, "I found Love". This album was produced together with the famous Reggae guitarist Ernest Ranglin. Now, the great thing with this all is, that you don't have to expect some digital cross-over music, or ragga when you know that there's recent music on the disc too.

Riddim after riddim, some pretty well known, mix after mix, the album remains interesting. Every now and then I just got to get up from my chair, stop writing and start skanking. Time to disturb the neighborhood and remind them, that Dub is The Number One. Fortunately, they agree!

5 out of 5 stars "wide range of in-depth Jamacian music ~ Gregory Isaacs".......2003-05-20

Gregory Isaacs' career has lasted more than 30 years and is still going strong, with no signs of slowing down. With previously unreleased material, Heartbeat takes the lead once more in providing classic tracks with "Gregory Isaacs In Dub:Dub a de Number One", featuring the Revolutionairies, the Soul Syndicate Band and the G.G. All Stars in a collection not to be missed. This artist has released up to 500 albums, recording with just about everyone on the planet creating new songs and revising some of his old ones. Isaacs' latest Heartbeat album "I Found Love" and his earlier releases "Love Is Overdue" are featured on this CD. Highlights and stand outs ~ "YOU'RE NOT MY ENEMY", "STAND UP FOR JUSTICE", "JURY MUST STAND" and "DUB A DE NUMBER ONE", in my humble opinion tells it like it is. Gregory is one of the most influential voices in Reggae, never looking back only trudging forward and making a difference.
