This 1995 tribute to the late Brazilian bossa nova master draws from the cream of the Verve/Polygram jazz catalog. Saxophonist Stan Getz, who introduced the sublimely sensual bossa nova to North American audiences in the early '60s, is joined by vocalist João Gilberto on the well-known title track and by guitarist Luiz Bonfa on the exquisite "O Morro Nao Tem Vez." Sarah Vaughan ("Corcovado"), Billy Eckstine ("Felicidade"), Wes Montgomery ("How Insensitive"), and Oscar Peterson ("Wave") also turn in classic performances from the '60s. Jobim himself offers guitar and piano accompaniment on several tracks and duets with Brazilian vocalist Elis Regina on "Aguas de Marco." Although subsequent generations of lame lounge singers have robbed bossa nova of its original mystique, in its pure form, this music is unsurpassed in conveying an intimately romantic mood with carefree sophistication. --Rick Mitchell

5 out of 5 stars Among the best.......2007-05-20

This CD is just another example of great Bossa Nova straight from brazil. Just like the other ones, it has some beautiful tunes; danceable, easy to the ears, romantic and very sensual. Would highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Jobim "Mixing it Up".......2007-01-11

Excellent!! A great combination of different extremely talented world artists doing a diffent take on Jobim's music. If you love Jobim and want to "mix it up" this is a great selection.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-01-09

Love this! It's part bossa nova, kind of jazzy. Takes me to a beach with white sands and clear blue water, exactly where I want to be at this time of the year.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing.......2006-09-06

I've had this cd for about 10 years now, and I've loved every minute of it again and again. Every song has its own beauty, in a very diverse way. The performance in "Chega de Saudade" is particularly riveting, each instrument delivering an absolutely perfect solo.

Also, not to be vulgar, but having sex to this album? A+++ would do again.

When guitarist Charlie Byrd first introduced bossa nova to Stan Getz in 1962, the saxophonist gave the lilting Brazilian rhythm its perfect American voice. Getz's sinuous lines and piping tenor sax sound merged with the understated samba beat to create an irresistible blend of cool jazz and warm Latin sensibilities. This CD gives us bossa nova's greatest soloist playing the tunes of its greatest composer, culling every song by Antonio Carlos Jobim that Getz recorded for Verve between 1962 and 1964. The biggest hits are here, including "The Girl from Ipanema" and "Corcovado" with João and Astrud Gilberto's charming vocals, while "Desafinado" and "One Note Samba" appear in both the original instrumental versions with Charlie Byrd and later vocal recordings with the Brazilians. The surprises come with the lesser-known Jobim songs, like "O Morro Nao Tem Vez," a gently keening, minor theme accompanied here by a largely Brazilian band that includes Jobim and the superb guitarist Luiz Bonfá. Another is "Eu e Voce," with Getz soaring in a Carnegie Hall performance. Subtle differences abound in the way the different Brazilian and American groups approach the material, but it's all tied together by Jobim's scintillating melodies and Getz's gorgeous sound and inspired improvisations. --Stuart Broomer

4 out of 5 stars The Girl From Ipanema.......2006-08-16

I enjoy this CD so much. It's really mellow. I picture myself walking around little streets in Europe listening to this. I can't help but grin when I play it. It's a nice departure from a lot of stuff that's out these days.

5 out of 5 stars This is it!.......2005-08-18

What can I say? Stan Getz at his best. If you like Jazz, you gotta have it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Chill-Out CD.......2004-05-13

I am usually an electronic music fan, but was introduced to Stan Getz from a compilation CD by Thievery Corporation. Since then, I have been hooked on his Bossa Nova style jazz music. This is a great CD, because it compiles all of Getz's best collaborations with Antonio Carlos Jobim. Classics like "Girl from Ipanema", "Corcovado", "Desafinado", "How Insensitive" and "One note samba" are all here, plus lesser-known songs like "Vivo Sonhando", "Eu e Voce" and "No more blues". This is currently the CD I listen to while lying out at my pool on lazy Sunday afternoons. The perfect Chill-out CD!

5 out of 5 stars Safe and timely Stan Getz Bossa compilation.......2004-02-12

Thanks to chillout and lounge artists such as Thievery Corporation, over the past few years Bossa Nova has once more come to the forefront of our musical consciousness. So today, almost three years after its release, this compilation of Bossa Nova works by American sax player Stan Getz comes in more than handy: it comes in timely, to reinforce Bossa as a groove that was more than a plain elevator music fad that lasted only for 3 years of our collective lives, in the early sixties.

Bossa is a downbeat, sexy statement to relax to, in a couch or while standing sipping through a coffee. It is a way of seeing the world without taking it all too seriously, it is -in a way- a happy way of seeing the world, which we need so direly in these turbulent times. And Stan Getz, driven by Bossa's creator, Jobim, and accompanied by geniuses of the calliber of Joao Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto, Charlie Byrd, Luis Bonfa, Gary Burton and many others, presents us here with a fairly comprehensive Verve compilation of some of Bossa's greatest moments, as lived (and conveyed) by Getz, for our enjoyment some 40 years after the fact, sounding just as fresh and upbeat.

5 out of 5 stars Great one-disc sampling of the whole Bossa Nova fad..........2003-08-31

The merger of cool American saxophone with sultry Brazilian folk sounds hit our shores in 1962, and was pretty much over by '65. While the craze was hot, it was everywhere. Now, 40 years later, it still pleases, especially because one never hears music like this on radio stations. Stan Getz was the USA's big champion of this style, and this CD takes selections from six of his vinyl LP's from the early '60's. Joining him are Antonio Carlos Jobim, composer, pianist and guitarist; singers Astrud and Joao Gilberto; vibraphonist Gary Burton and guitarist Jim Hall. All the biggest Bossa Nova hits are on here, in original versions. The mood is mostly mellow, but it's a happy hour overall. If you like jazz, and you don't have any of the original records sampled on this disc, don't be afraid to buy this. It is worth the price, by far.

5 out of 5 stars Elly Ameling now more available .......2007-03-07

I had a 33 rpm album of Elly Ameling singing Schubert lieder accompanied by piano and clarinet at times. It was one of my all time favorite albums so I have been disappointed that I have not been able to find it anywhere on CD.

Now I can just buy this excellent collection. So much music in one place! Since I confess that I am far from an expert on the rest of her records, I look forward to hearing her sing many other styles and composers.

I think it is silly to criticize her for not singing Wagner, for example, since her version of many songs, especially lieder, are nothing short of sublime. I would like to hear how many Wagnerians sing Schubert or Mozart.

I doubt if they could approach the skill and soul with which Elly Ameling sings lieder.

5 out of 5 stars Delight in every note.......2006-03-10

To speak as briefly as possible about this superb collection from an equally superb singer, what can I say but that Ms Ameling possessed a voice that shone with radiant warmth and star-like shimmer? And unlike many another light lyric soprano, Elly Ameling was possessed of a very high standard of musicianship, considerable intelligence, and a sort of immediate charm that captivates the listener.

So many of her recordings have still to be released on CD, but this 5CD-set goes some way towards remedying the situation. The repertoire spans a wide variety - French mèlodies, Lieder, light-hearted "sentimental" songs, Bach, etc. - and in each piece, Ms Ameling shows that quality of pearl-like beauty. It is a beauty which is also extremely pretty - a beauty of voice that is never overbearing and over-ripe, but perfectly blossoming upon the tree of inspiration.

I recommend this set unequivocally. It truly is sheer delight.

5 out of 5 stars While they last..........2005-05-17

Elly Ameling held the quiet stage for recitals of great artistry and dignity for several decades and sadly most of the enormously successful CDs of her long career output are now unavailable. For those who have little access to the documentation of this very special artist, this box set is a must. It is a compilation of many of her recordings with differing accompanists, conductors, orchestras and composers. And while not all of the choices for inclusion here would be considered her greatest moments, there are enough works that sustain the warm memories of the little Dutch hausfrau who quietly and simply paid homage to composers with her clear and intelligent musicianship and radiant voice.

Ameling was known to schedule recitals of Schubert cycles and songs and in the afterglow of her performance answer the demand for curtain calls with additional Schubert melodies: she gifted her audience with the dignity of honoring a composer's works by maintaining the focus on that composer rather than milk the audience with the usual encore applause-getting favorites. And special moments such as quietly and pensively strolling through the orchestra during the Mahler 4th symphony to arrive at front stage, unapplauded, just in time for the opening line of her singing - those simple homage to composers and collaborators made her selfless manner endearing to audiences.

Despite the fact that Ameling's voice was on the small side she was always able to muster the projection to carry her message solidly in context with an orchestra. Yes, other more famous singers have recorded Ravel's quintessentially French SHEHERAZADE, but few have the perfection of diction and aura of mystery that Ameling maintained. Whether singing with piano or orchestra, or interpreting Bach, Mozart, Handel, and Vivaldi with the same degree of involvement as Brahms and Schumann and Schubert, Elly Ameling spanned a career that engendered passionate commitment from her fans. And this boxed set is a pocket full of memories to be treasured. Buy it before this too becomes unavailable. Grady Harp, May 05

5 out of 5 stars Treasures From a Treasure.......2004-09-25

Treasures from a Treasure.

Ameling, one of the world's most beloved recitalists is captured here in a 5 CD collection offering some of her most beautiful recordings of song. While we are used to her perfection in songs of Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Schumann, Faure and Hahn, an added joy is her "pop" side, tackling - without a whiff of pretension, Porter, Kern, Gershwin, Ellington, et al.

What an absolute joy it is listening to this amazing artist sing these songs with an almost uncanny natural ease. There is no resorting to a "pop" voice and yet most of these pop standards songs sound as though they could have been written for her. Clean attacks, sometimes a bit of the pop technique of hanging on to a consonant longer than a classical artist normally would shows an appreciation and understanding of the style. Still, there is never once a compromise of her vocal beauty.

I like the way the songs have been arranged for her voice in that she sort of sings them clean, unaffected in the first half and then lets loose and kinda "swings" with it adding embellishments but never really changing her voice (Price, von Stade and other favorite singers of mine seem to have always added a breathy quality to much of their crossover material.)

Ameling doesn't resort to trying to "let her hair down" or get down and dirty, but rather the honest with which she approaches every one of these songs shows how much she enjoys singing them and her style is as refreshing as stumbling onto a cool spring on a sweltering summer's afternoon. A wonderful surprise.

5 out of 5 stars More than fully earned praise for an exceptional singer........2003-07-15

As I had the privilige of hearing this outstanding Lied-singer during her long career in Holland and being the proud possessor of almost all her recordings, I cannot but fully agree with the professional and joyful review of Mr. Robert Holliston from Victoria, B.C. Canada.
Yes, it is unbelievable that of about the 150 recordings Mrs. Ameling made during her long career (for the greater part of course on the 'oldfashioned' LP's, as well as the innumerable Dutch live-recorded radio-concerts), so few CD's have been released.
Speaking of tradition: it was the page-turner of the Wigmore Hall in London who told Mrs. Ameling after her first recital in this hall, that she reminded him of Elisabeth Schumann. (And he certainly didn't mean her looks only!)
For those who are eager to hear her singing Ravel's Shéhérazade (just one example of stirring imagination combined with her Art of Singing) I can tell you that Philips released a 2-box CD of this work in 1999, combined with Debussy's La Damoiselle élue and a compilation of French mélodies, i.e. Debussy, Fauré, Duparc, Satie. One of the gems is Caplet's Le Corbeau et le Renard which even make children, who know the fables of La Fontaine, revel in the singing of the quarrelsome birds....
Her brilliant accompanyist is Rudolf Jansen. Let us cherish great artists in their art!

5 out of 5 stars Stan the immortal .......2006-08-30

I have many many Stan Getz cds. I treasure this box set since 1990 I guess the year that I bought it. I know it by memory now, but nevertheless it always sounds fresh and superb. The quality of the music contained here can't be underestimated maybe only because it had success (something that jazz purist often do, critizise a music only because it sold big numbers). This music is something that words can't do justice. The encounter between Stan Getz and bossa nova and its artists was made in Heaven. Here superlatives are not enough believe us (believe to me and to all the other enthusiastic reviewers). It's a music so beautiful, so perfect that it flows with a divine smoothness. This music seems easy to uneducated people and they may even appreciate it just because it sounds so "simple". But it seems easy only because the musicians who played this music, Stan first, are unbelievable, superb artists. This music is amazing and really, can't change the face of a lot of your days. A lot of people allready told you what you can find here. Everything Stan recorded in bossa fashion. I only want to say that this box has inside itself a lot of happiness that the amazing music Stan and the others who played it will give you for years and years to come. Think about this, money are only paper. This box will send you shivers down your spine for years and will be a pure emotion each time you'll listen to it. What would you choose .. to have a bigger wallet or to be a happier person? I'd pay probably 1000 dollars for this music if it would be the only way to own it.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, Did I Get Lucky.......2002-09-20

Ran into this a couple years ago at the public library and hit the Bossa Nova mother lode. Realized that it would make a perfect gift and serendipitously found it on special sale. Should've bought all the copies I could!

This has to be one of the best box sets ever, both from a musical and an archival point of view. Since the other reviewers have described so well the contents of this collection, I only want to exhort you, the prospective buyer, to keep a sharp eye out for an opportunity to grab it at a favorable price.

In the meantime, let's hope Verve prints more copies. This is music that will never go out of style.

5 out of 5 stars Proof there is a God........2001-07-20

There is a line here sung by Astrud Gilberto (from an American song, but never mind) - 'I feel so gay in a melancholy way' - that sums up for me the eternal appeal of bossa nova: beach music cooled with sadness that somehow seizes your tired soul, making it feel warm and happy.

This remarkable set - which, along with 'the Antonio Carlos Jobim Songbook', is the only CD I intend to take to my desert island - contains the five prodigious bossa nova albums recorded by Stan Getz in the early 60s: 'Jazz Samba' (the still sparkle-fresh collaboration with Charlie Byrd that introduced bossa nova to the world); 'Big Band Bossa Nova' (a not always successful attempt to combine two mutually exclusive forms, but featuring two epic classics, 'Manha de Carnival' and 'Chega Suadade'); 'Jazz Samba Encore' (an otherworldly masterpiece with Luiz 'Black Orpheus' Bonfa and singer Maria Toldo); 'Getz/Gilberto' (my own treasured favourite, a matchless meeting of four great talents, Getz, Jobim, Joao and Astrud Gilberto) and 'Getz/Almeida' (a rigorous, last gasp jazz workout).

All the great classics are here - 'Desafinado' (will anyone ever spell this right?), 'Insensatez' (swoon), 'O Morro Nao Tem Vez', 'One note samba', 'The girl from Ipanema', 'Corcovado' etc. (you'll know them all even if you think you don't) - together with some less familiar delights. What is perhaps most exceptional is the way Getz adapts like a chameleon to the very different needs of his various collaborators, and yet still retains the distinctive, emotional sax genius we know and love.

There are some extra tracks included as well, including Getz's only collaboration with Baden-Powell, some live numbers with the Gilbertos, and an absolutely blissful, happysad 'It might as well be spring', the only track I've ever heard that actually DOES sound like spring.

5 out of 5 stars Quiet Nights or Anytime.......2001-01-25

I've had a copy of this wonderful collection in my possesion in one form or another for the last thirteen years. Once I finally threw out the tattered cassettes, I moved on to this four CD set. I can't praise it enough. It's not just the well known favorites like Girl From Ipanema or Desafinado, but the whole anthology. From the quiet tones of Corcovado to Stan's incredile blowing on So Danco Samba, there's something great on nearly every track. I'm only 31 and I've introduced this CD to the boom box on many occasions around my friends more accustomed to Pearl Jam or old Ozzy and the reaction has always been the same; "Is this elevator music?" But soon they hear the same passionate soul that nearly knocked the Beatles off the top of the charts in the mid '60s (read Phil Schaap's liner notes!) and realize that there's something special here and begin to really enjoy it. It's a warm Summer barbecue or any time you need to kick up your feet after a hard day at work with a cold drink. This is something with which to either complete or begin your samba collection.

5 out of 5 stars All The Great Bosa Nova Recordings Under One Roof.......2001-01-11

After having having foolishly traded away my vinyl copy, (origianlly released on 5 LP's) I was delighted to find this CD reissue. This is the only place to find Getz's entire Verve output of Samba and Bosa Nova recordings. The first disc is comprised of Getz's collaboration with the late great Jazz/Samba guitarist, Charlie Byrd and contains the classic Antonio Carlos Jobim compostion, Desafino. Disc two finds Getz in the company of Brizil's premier Samba vocalist Joao Gilberto. The combination of Getz's velvety smooth tenor and Gilberto's elegantly cool vocal stylings makes for an astonishing match made in Samba Heaven. Songs from this historic pairing include the highly recognizable The Girl From Impanema and the hypnotic Samba De Uma Nota So, (One Note Samba).

Disc three covers the Getz/Astrid Gilberto hits and includes the lovely Corcovado and It Might As Well Be Spring as well as the enormous international hit, The Girl From Impanema, (not to be confused with the Getz/Joao Gilberto version). This is the recording that put Bosa Nova on the map and caused a huge sensation from Brazil to Japan and all stops in between. As undeniably the biggest hit ever to come out of South America, The Girl From Impenema has been recorded by everyone from Frank Sinatra to Ella Fitzgerald. The many other highlights found here include Getz in the company of an allstar jazz lineup on the Big Band Bosa Nova sides. While this may be too much material for the casual fan to digest, I suggest you begin with the Getz/Joao Gilberto album. If you find yourself hooked and yearning for more, go directly to this anthology it's worth the time and money.

2 out of 5 stars But five stars for the Puppy Song.......2005-05-14

Yikes! What a poor CD. Mostly disco, and bad disco at that. As others have pointed out, if you want the famous bossa nova version of "Girl from Ipanema" with Astrud's singing and the Stan Getz sax solo, try Astrud Gilberto's Finest Hour CD. Amazon has it, but don't get confused, apparently in the samples Amazon sampled the 30 seconds of the song with Astrud's husband singing. But trust me, that is the version you're probably looking for. The version of "Girl From Ipanema" on this CD is complete schlock and I have no idea why anyone would want to listen to it. As far as disco goes, I guess this CD is OK if all you want is a steady beat, but it's not very moving.

Now that I got the bad part of this review over with, now for the good part. "The Puppy Song" is Astrud Gilberto at her best, and is a very nice arrangement, not mindlessly fabricated disco. Astrud Gilberto's voice adds an innocent quality to the song that Harry Nilsson's original doesn't convey. I believe this is the only CD with Astrud Gilberto's version of "The Puppy Song". I think this one song is worth the price of the CD, particularly if you can find it at a used, discounted price. Fortunately for those wanting this CD for this fine gem of a song there should be a lot of used CD's available because of disappointed buyers who really wanted the famous version of the title track.

2 out of 5 stars Just so you know...........2003-03-04

This is not the original Stan Getz version of "Girl from Ipanema" that you are looking for. For that, and for many other fine Astrud Gilberto performances, you must track down a copy of "Astrud Gilberto's Finest Hour" which is a greatest hits collection of her sixties work, with good liner notes.

I purchased this cd by mistake(since there is(4)Astrud Giberto cd's by the same name! And i had a 2nd on orderand this packed to go back! on the review's of others although i have not recieved my 2nd cdI am so happy i listened to this Yes this copy has a faster pace to itBUT it is Great! it has fast dance mixes along with slow ones, Just right for a party album and Ms.Gilberto's voice is just wonderful on allcut'sWho say's a artist cannot change styles once in a whileI'm sure she was satisfied with the outcome or we would not have it to tear apartand at the price you cannot go wrong I hope my rateing ups the rateings on this cd it deserves it!

    1 out of 5 stars terrible.......2002-01-24

I'd heard The Girl from Ipanema (another recording) and decided to purchase it. Should have done my research. This high pitched, strained version hurts the ears. I couldn't get it to the cd store for trade in fast enough.

2 out of 5 stars disco girl form ipanema.......2001-09-28

I'm the greatest fan of Astrud and was really looking forward to getting this CD, but I was really surprised, when I listened to it. Jazzy bossa nova style that I love with Astrud very much is something that this CD isn't about. Disco remixes, I'd say. Only positive thing is her voice, which can not be unchanged. If you are looking for an essential Astrud Gilberto CD, than don't buy this one, but Sliver collection, jazz samba, Verve Collection or many others, that are the best. But if you are collector, than maybe this CD would find a place on your shelf for collectory reasons. Anyway, Astrud is the greatest!

When I bought this album, I was a swinging grad student. The music accompanied me when I was working on my experiments (organic synthesis!). I never got bored, it really got me in the mood! So when I was planning my wedding banquet a few years later, I used some of the tracks (from number 6 onwards) during the event. This album will help me chronicle at least the past 3 years of my life. Buy it, you won't regret it. It will inspire you to move on with your life

I asked for this CD for Christmas, but didn't know what to expect. It's fantastic, and prompted me to write my first ever review. The only drawback is that the title track "The Girl from Ipanema" is an instrumental (I suppose paying for the royalities/rights to include the popular version would make the cost prohibitive); for the best version of that song, buy the Getz/Gilberto CD that accompanies this. But be sure to buy THIS CD if you like pleasant music! Who cares if you don't know what they are saying, or don't know Bossa Nova is--I didn't and I love it!
