Creator/producer Joel Surnow's hit action-suspense series largely turns on an innovative fusion of real-time plot line delivered by aggressive camera work and multi-frame editing technique. But no small part of the show's intensely propulsive drive -- and much of its dramatic tension and atmospheric textures -- are consistently delivered by the music of young composer Sean Callery, who's won three straight Emmy nominations (winning once) for his contributions to the series. The composer personally selected and annotated the tracks for this anthology of his best work from the show's first three seasons, anchored by a complete version of the show's usually truncated theme. Though it shares similarities with Michael Giacchino's work on Alias, Callery's work here is consistently darker, an electro-organic fusion that spans tense, brooding orchestral passages and thrashing dollops of metallic-edged techno. Yet the composer also delivers moments of melodic, almost mournful solitude, while the third season's story line inspires some evocative Latin influences as well. Callery's background in sound effects editing contributes much to the rich sonic textures here, yielding a pioneering approach that portends a bright future for the composer. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

A review from a soundtrack composer groupie.......2006-11-15
As the title of this review indicates, I own several soundtracks from various TV series and movies. Out of all of them, I believe this is my favorite. It is no wonder that Sean has won two Emmy's for his work on "24".
One of the great things about this CD is being able to hear the show's theme in it's entirety. The other most noteable tracks for me are "Jack's Revenge At The Docks" and "The Bomb Detonates"....I guess because of the scenes that they accompanied. My other favorites...."Palmer's Theme" (reminds me of "Fanfare For A Common Man") and "Coliseum Finale" (when I listen to this one, I can actually see Mrs. Palmer running through the LA Coliseum....as fast as the beat will take her.)
If you are a fan or "24" or a fan of great music, you NEED to get this CD!!
A excellent score for a excellent TV drama!.......2006-11-12

A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This double-CD set really makes you wish you'd been there when the show was recorded: you can hear the crowd going berserk at times, and the temptation is strong to do the same thing in the comfort of your living room. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

Not the real "DREAM" experience.......2007-04-04
Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.
Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

BAJOUR is a classic of this type of show. it is replete with almost hilarious comedy songs, and almost lovely ballads. its ambitions were modest, but it accomplished them 100%. and there are some great performances here by broadway legend chita rivera, and the sadly ignored and underrated nancy dussault.
if you expect every show to be MY FAIR LADY, this album is not for you. but if you want to spend a thoroughly enjoyable hour listening to what the broadway musical once was, you cannot do better than BAJOUR!

Project Skyward.......2005-04-27
"Into the Orion Nebula" is spacey and ethereal from the very beginning. It has blips with spacey, floating synths. This is a 5-minute entry into the world of Project Skyward and it really sets up the listener for this coherent LP. Eventually a back-beat comes into the picture and adds depth to the vastness of their spacey canvass. The beats change and become muffled as the song works its way toward then end. Voices come into the mix and really give it a ecclesiastical feel. I find this song to be breathtaking and beautiful with broad soundscapes that cause the listener to float along. "A Flash of Light" blends seamlessly with "Orion," but this song is very different since it has more structure and it includes Skyward's fantastic vox. Fia's ghostly and angelic vocals float in the background of the pulsating beats and layers of keys. This song reminds me of those moments in a club when all the lights are perfect, the smells in the air are intoxicating and you have no choice but to dance and have a great time. "Distant Blue" is quieter and has a more trip-hop feel to it. The electronic elements are still heavy in the song, but "Blue" is more ballad-like with Fia's and Skyward's vocals working together perfectly as they creating a floating feel to the tune.
"Blind" changes the mood a bit with a danceable beat starting off the song. The track is softened by a low hum, bass, and some floating clicks and blips. Fia takes front vocalist on this track and she shows that she is perfect for that position. This song is a bit pessimistic as she sings angelically, "The blind leading the blind/Into the end of time.../Can our future survive/Can we open up our eyes?" It seems here to be a political statement, but, of course, it is difficult to say and open to a number of interpretations. "Between Two World" has listless keys and Skyward's vocals are very much at the forefront of this mix. The mood is one of ease and then the beat picks up in a very nice change. The keys stay floating and listless, but the beats become more complex and intricate as they are layered. This does not take away from the mood at all. In fact, this complexity amazingly enhances the ease that is communicated at the beginning of the track.
"Shine" begins with a club like bass thumping and whirling, silvery sounds. Tatyana Koziupa makes a guest appearance on this track as vocalist. Her cadence on this song feels a bit like Bjork, but without the accent. The mood on this song seems more uplifting and less pessimistic than "Blind." A ray of incredible hope shines through this track and brings a different side to the album, filling the void of space with happier sentiments. "An Afternoon In Sedona" is another instrumental track that has lush soundscapes mixed with Project Skyward's techno expertise. The voices mixed in with the synths and beats are gorgeous and have a chanting feel to them. "The Alien" is the most ambient track on the disc, and, I think my favorite. It is soothing and floating as Skyward takes the listener into vast, ambient soundscapes.
Moving from techno beats and listless ambience to 80's synths and angelic vocals, Project Skyward has constructed a coherent and captivating first full-length. There were more tracks on the disc that I did not mention, but I felt that I had given my reader more than a feel for the disc already. That said, I did not leave them out because they were low points on the disc, just that they are a seamless part of this coherent album and I may have been a bit redundant in my writing. If you dig Ulrich Schnauss or M83, you should probably go pick this disc up. You won't regret it.
