Manuel Barrueco is one of the best guitarists I've ever heard. Listen to his own arrangement of Albeniz's Suite Española and you'll have trouble believing it's only two hands on one guitar. But Barrueco doesn't use his technique to show off. He's a solid musician, as expressive in Bach as in Villa- Lobos. He also makes transcriptions that respect the origins of the music. This is a wide-ranging guitar collection, but all the music is worth hearing, especially in performances like these. The disc is one of the best bargains among all guitar recordings, and Vox's recordings still sound like a guitar. --Leslie Gerber

I'm a thoughtful and introspective person with a diverse background. Of all the old countries, Spain's diverse background appealed to me. This music reflects that appeal.

Not much else really to say about this. It is a collection of brilliant interpretations and the guitar has the most amazing sound I've ever heard on a recording. You will find yourself almost spiritually bound to share this recording with any classical guitar playing friends and aficionados.

I was browsing Amazon, shopping for gifts, and when I listened to the snippets of this, I couldn't resist ordering it for myself. It's a 3CD set of beautiful, varied music played by a brilliantly skilled and sensitive master. Barrueco has an extraordinary touch that seems perfect for each piece, from Bach to Paganini to Villa-Lobos. Anyone who likes classical guitar would treasure this set.

This three CD collection is a reissue of Cuban born virtuoso Manuel Barrueco's early Vox LPs, recorded in the late 1970s to early 1980s. Included in this set is his stunning performance of selections by Spanish composers Isaac Albéniz and Enrique Granados. This 1978 Albéniz/Granados recording is perhaps the greatest example of what I call the "cool school" of guitar playing, eschewing color and warmth in favor of restraint, taste, and note perfect execution. One complaint: in this reissue VoxBox inexplicably spread the Albéniz/Granados selections over three CDs.

The premise here is an interesting one: versatile American mandolinist Mike Marshall (whose roots are in bluegrass) and Brazilian pianist Jovino Santos Neto (who is a Hermeto Pascoal disciple) team up with an occasional guest for an album that surveys 13 of Hermeto Pascoal's 2500 compositions. Giving the official stamp of approval, Pascoal himself is on hand to play on a few of the tunes. But whereas the composer's own performances can be quite playful and even chaotic, Marshall and Neto find a more romantic, somber and harmonically rich vein in the master's Brazilian jazz pantheon while touching on Western classical (particularly the title cut) and other Latin styles. That it seamless blends together is tribute to the top-shelf musicianship of the two principals. The production quality is excellent as well, capturing the delicate timbre of the acoustic instruments and allowing the listener to savor each note of this exquisite music as if sipping from a glass of fine wine. --Tad Hendrickson

Following a trip to Brazil in 1995, Newgrass mandolin whiz Mike Marshall decided to tackle an entire album of Brazilian "choro" music, the zippy, propulsive instrumental style pioneered in the late 1800s, alongside it's better-known musical cousin, the samba. On this album, Marshall delves deeper into his love of Brazilian jazz, exploring the work of avantnik multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal, one of the most original and more challenging modern Brazilian jazz players. On the whole, I would say this set is far less "out there" than most of Pascoal's own albums, but the interplay between mandolinist Marshall and pianist Jovino Santos Neto reveals a strong intuitive link, both between the performers and the music they're tackling. Interesting album with some remarkable moments. Pascoal himself adds a flute solo to one track, giving the album that extra bit of authenticity...

    A magazine long ago called "Bon Voyage" a collection of "Paris and Rome favorites." So it is, and the collection is subtitled "Continental Souvenirs." "Carefree" tells us more about Percy Faith's personality than his travelogues - with all selections written AND arranged by Faith. "Go-Go-Po-Go," a strongly rhythmic AND melodic Faith original that was the "B" side of the single of "Summer Place;" now it's in this collection with several other great Faith originals, including "Lisa," taken from a radio play Faith scored years ago.     Percy Faith is the master of arranging selections by other composers ~ take for instance this original two LP's on one CD "Bon Voyage" (CS 8214 in 1960) and "Carefree" (CS 8360 in 1961-all songs composed by Percy Faith) ~ his tasteful treatments always highlights the quality of the composition, ultimately making them a hit all over again. Faith's formula was always to keep the arrangements fresh and new with his distinctive signature style ~ with the wave of his baton, the Percy Faith award winning orchestra is ready to strut their stuff.

    Percy Faith was a staple of outstanding music during the '50s, '60s and '70s ~ his sound is unmistakable, which compiles of lush string orchestral performances ~ a treat for the ears ~ "MORGEN", "ANEMA E CORE", "MON ONCLE", "LA VIE EN ROSE", "UNDER PARIS SKIES" and "ARRIVDERCI, ROMA" Maestro Faith meets the challenge with flying colors ~ listen for Faith's originality and warmth with every cue.

    The beautiful music on this album perfectly blends the Old World SPanish style to the New World. The artistry of the flutist and guitar player are exceptional as are the accompanying rhythms and castanets on some of the cuts. Provides relaxing and upbeat background music for home, office or driving.

    Very expressive if not extraordinarily powerful music these guys produce. As a whole it becomes interesting when a typical europeian or north american musical style gets (a) played by non-nationals and (b) with musical partitions outside that tradition. Here is the result: extactic, franctic, but harmonically agreable to ones' ears. You ought to get this recording. And enjoy it.

      Paulo Bellinati would stand out if he were just a guitarist, but he is also an extremely gifted composer. As a fellow guitarist, I have to admire his tone and and impeccable technique. But as a lover of good music, I must marvel at his brilliant original compositions. I have heard a lot of great solo guitar music in my life, but very few can compare with what Bellinati can do with just 6 strings. His transcriptions of other composers are equally satisfying and original in quality. If you enjoy classical guitar and are ready to move outside the box, this would be the CD to get. Or, if you have an appreciation of Brazilian musical color and rhythms, you should have this CD.

      Julian Bream not only plays the guitar, and the lute
      (although purists and I suspect Bream himself would say rather unconventionally), but most of all, Bream plays MUSIC. This is very, very important. There are many fine guitarists around today, but I doubt any could match Bream's sheer musicality when these recordings were made.
      This 28 CD box set is a lesson in music making, regardless of what instrument is being played. The recordings are the complete RCA Bream catalogue from 1959 to 1989. If you can find the complete box set or even any of the individual volumes, I suggest you make the purchase. (Shame on RCA and BMG for not keeping this box set and "all" the individual volumes in print.)
      Some of the higlights of Breams remarkable talent are his
      interpretations of Britten's "Nocturnal", Walton's "Five Bagatelles", the instrumental and vocal works (with tenor Peter Pears) of Dowland, the "first" complete guitar works of Villa-Lobos, a thorough history of the guitar in Spain from the Renaissance to the Present on period instruments, plus all the works that have become classical guitar standards by Bach, Sor, Giuliani, Albeniz, Rodrigo, plus the "new" standards by Brouwer, Arnold, Berkeley, Britten, Walton, etc.
      Music making of this caliber is rare indeed. Buy it if you can find it. Good Luck !

      Who don't want to have a wonderful classical guitar collection? Well, this pack consists in 28 CDs, more than 1.000 minutes of music, distribuited by different titles as Baroque Guitar, Spanish Guitar, etc. Some highlights are here, like Asturias, Fernando Sor variations on Mozart's Magic Flute, Paganini Grand Sonata, all Preludes and Etudes of Villa-Lobos, and, well, lots of really good things. Also, there are some cds Julian Bream plays Guitar with Orchestra, or with Harpsichords. Ah, he plays lute in some too. Unfortunately, there are 2 or 3 cds where a tenor sings and another which a woman says some poems, and those, in my opinion, are not very nice. So, it's a good collection, and if you can, buy it!!
