5 out of 5 stars Authentic Brazilian FORRO!!.......2006-06-21

I grew up in the Northeastern region of Brazil, listening to and dancing the "Forro". This CD is as close to authentic Forro as you will get! I play it for my 8-month old daughter so that she will get used to these Brazilian rythms. I agree with the reviewer who said that if you like Zydeco music, you will probably enjoy this.

4 out of 5 stars Don't Need to Understand the Lyrics..........2005-08-27

Despite my complete ignorance of the Portuguese language, I've become a fan of Brazilian music. What I've found, however, is the quality is very uneven (isn't it always?). As collections of Brazilian music go, IMHO this one is well above average. Although I don't understand a word of it, it still sounds very good.

I judge a CD by how many tracks I feel are worth "ripping" to MP3s for repeated listening. I did this to about 3/4 of those on this CD - pretty high for me.

The Gonzaga and Dominguinhos songs are great, but "Estrela Miúda" is my (current) favorite of this collection.

For an even better compilation, I suggest "Brazil Classics 1: Beleza Tropical."

4 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Introduction.......2005-07-11

First off, this poor page needs a tracklisting, so here's that for whom it may concern:
1) Luiz Gonzaga - O Fole Roncou (The Bellows Roared)
2) Gal Costa - Festa do Interior (Party of the Brazilian Interior)
3) Jackson do Pandeiro - Tum-Tum-Tum
4) Luiz Gonzaga - Danado de Bom (Damn Good)
5) Dominguinhos - Querubim (Cherb)
6) Anastácia - O Sucesso de Zefinha (Little Zefa's Sucess)
7) Nando Cordel & Amelinha - É de Dar Agua na Boca (It makes my mouth water)
8) Dominguinhos - Vou com Você (I'll Go with You)
9) Gonzaguinha - Asa Branca (White Wing)
10) Clemilda - Recordação de Vaqueiro (Recollection of a Cowboy)
11) Jorge de Altinho & Domiguinhos - Bom Demais (Too Good/So Good)
12) Marinalva - Tarde Nordestina (Northeastern Afternoon)
13) Luiz Gonzaga - A Feita de Caruaru (The Market of Caruaru)
14) Genival Lacerda - Aniversário do Seu Vavá (Mr's Vavá's Birthday)
15) Jackson do Pandeiro - Chiclete com Banana (Bubble Gum with Bananas)
16) Trio Nordestinho - Rejeição (Rejection)
17) João do Vale - Estrela Miúda (Tiny Star)
18) Luiz Gonzaga & Elba Ramalho - Sanforinha Choradeira (Little Weeping Accordion)

This is a sampling off the music of the Brazilian northeast, which is a dry, impoverished region of the country near and on the equator. It's presently very popular throughout Brazil and is usually danced to by couples. Although it's not my favorite genre of Brazil music, it's still worth giving a go if you are interested in Brazilian music and culture. You really need to hear it for yourself because anything it could be compared to is just that, a comparision. I've heard people compare it to ska, polka, tejano, but it's not really any of those things. It's its own unique thing.

5 out of 5 stars Irresistible Party Disc.......2003-07-01

This compila tion CD of music from Brazil's harsh northeast is one of the most enjoyable CDs that I have heard in a long time. Unlike many pop CDs - which you buy for one good song, only to find that the song you bought it for is the only good one on the disc - this one is loaded with treasures. The late great Jackson do Pandeiro (1919-1982) is represented by two delightful cuts, and the legendary Luiz Gonzaga (1912-1989)has four cuts. Those unfamiliar with the music are doubtless wondering "What is it like?" It is extraordinarily energetic party music. As David Byrne points out in his notes it is somewhat reminiscent of zydeco, though I would be inclined to describe it as zydeco on speed. The rhythmic and instrumental qualities are strictly those of Latin America. The lyrics are, not surisingly, in Portugese (Though the CD booklet has translations). I highly recommend it for you that are tired of the dreary, bankrupt pop current in the US today. Put this on at your next party and watch people come alive.

5 out of 5 stars We could have done without the decapitated heads.......1998-11-06

This is the third in David Byrne's series of Brazilian compilations and it's every bit as good as its companions. By including Gal Costa (who I think is fantastic), Byrne doesn't totally move away from showcasing the work of the MPB crowd, but moreso than in the other albums does he present the music of the real forro and nordeste artists, Jackson do Pandeiro and Luis Gonzaga in particular (Gal & Elba Ramalho are the only pop stars represented on this disc). "Estrela Miuda" by Joao do Vale is one of my all-time favorites. The only thing that honestly bothers me about this disc is that every time I open it up to play it, I'm confronted with this macabre old b&w picture of about 15 decapitated head sitting on shelves. Horrified and intrigued when I first saw this, I poured through the liner notes for an explanation or relevance of this, but found none. Granted, I'm not the world's foremost expert on Brazilian culture and history (I learned Portuguese and my fiance is from Portugal, but I'm basically just a huge fan of the music), but if there's some connection here, it's totally lost on me.

5 out of 5 stars Very good brazilian songs.......1998-08-02

This is the best musical CD about brazilan classic songs that I have ever heard. I hope that I can hear more songs of those singers.

4 out of 5 stars Infectious, exotic, earthy, and most excellent.......2004-04-04

David Byrne of Talking Heads brings us a compilation of forr?, a style of music from Northern Brazil, a "mixture of ska and polka!" This is a terrific compilation of eclectic music that I happened across years ago, but never opened until recently. I wonder why I never opened it? I wish I had, because I've been missing out for far too long on this wonderful taste of Brazillian rural backyard party music. I'm enjoying this so much that I'm going to buy the first two volumes in the series. David Byrne is oft neglected in mainstream music, yet he is regularly producing excellent works either from his solo albums or by gathering the works of others like this and bringing it to the people of the rest of the world. Thank you David and thank you to all of the musicians and singers who contributed music to this compilation. An excellent purchase for the eclectic music lover.

4 out of 5 stars Great compilation of Brazilian "country music".......2002-02-02

This is great music from the north of Brazil. This is not slickly produced pop but rather the music of the countryside. You can hear the age and experience in the voices of the singers. The rhythyms are infectious, sometimes sounding quite similar to Cajun music. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent way to get started in this music.......2001-09-11

David Byrne's Luaka-bob series on Brazilian music are some of the very best world-music compilations around. Volume 1 ("Beleza Tropical") is definitely the place to get started -- it's so enchanting you will have to keep going. By the time you get to this one, Vol. 3, hopefully you'll be hooked. This is Brazilian music with a "country" feel, a bit more rural and rough and thus a very spicy addition to the series. Buy this if you liked the others in the series.

4 out of 5 stars una buena seleccion de musica nordestina brasilera.......2001-05-08
