    3 out of 5 stars 3 has sounded better.......2005-01-25

when i first herd 3 i was in amazment, i first herd the albome wake pig and was extremly excited to see what else they had to offer. i bought all of there albumes, (wake pig, paint by number, half life, summercamp nightmare) and my least favoret is paint by number but next up is summercamp nightmare. the lryics are stil alittle ruff and slightly emo on this albome. they seem to still searching for the sound that they reached on wake pig. the guitar is softer and not as actaive, if you are interested in older 3, i would recamend half life, an acustic performance and also had a varity of songs from thier first 2 records. but over all, if you are a deadicated 3 fan, get this. but if not get wake pig.

    5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS.......2004-12-03

THIS IS THE BEST ALBUM EVER. ONE OF THE BEST EVER. LISTEN TO THIS GUY'S ACOUSTIC STUFF TOO, JOEY EPPARD BEEN TO THE FUTURE. HE ALSO APPEARS ON A MAN NAMED ALEX GOPHER'S ALBUM. BUY THAT TO, BUY THEM ALL. THE SONGS ARE AMAZING, TWICE OVER. NO BETTER BAND THAN THIS.

    5 out of 5 stars greatness.......2004-11-11

3 was the opening band when i went to see underoath and coheed&cambria, and they were amazing. seriously, they kicked ass. the guitar solos were just phenomenal and the vocals gave me chills. i wish you could preview their music on here, but hey- take my word for it. no? then go to piolet.com hehehe

    5 out of 5 stars 3: Talent vs. Injustice.......2004-11-08

Most of you will probably not even know of this band. Just a testament to how little appreciation there is these days for true musical talent! Three make an incredible artistic statement with their unique blend of incredible melodic singing, incredibly technical playing- one acoustic, one electric, and slamming rhythm section- One incredible drummer, bassist, and a keyboardist who teams up on percussion when not tripping out on his ms-20. All in all, not only does three come across as virtuosic, but they also write hooks that will be stuck in your head for days, if not weeks, and all with profound lyrics (if sometimes slightly over the top.) This is one band to keep your eyes on- and in the mean time, buy everything they sell and catch them live as well- they are positively murderous.

5 out of 5 stars the best band you've never heard.......2004-05-29

Ever few years an artist or band comes along that is head and sholders above the rest, 3 is that band for us, today. Joey Eppard is in the same league as any of the greats (Lennon, Zeppelin, Cobain). He's living proof of how screwed up the music industy is for not representing our generation's true talent. Summercamp nightmare is the best album you buy.

    Album Description

Having previously released an LP on seminal San Diego art punk label, Gravity Records, and a single on Gold Standard Laboratories (complete with a cover of the Psychedelic Furs' "Dumb Waiters"), The Rapture returns with Out of the Races Onto the Tracks EP. Blending influence from visionaries such as PiL, Television, and Chrome with an ear for dance and pop music, The Rapture continue to perfect their particular brand of "sonic deathfuck groove."

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-04-17

"Out of the Races and On to the Tracks" is an awesome collection high strung tunes ranging from the dancy self-titled track, to the angry, raw, and powerful track entitled "The Jam". The songs all seem to fade into eachother as if the album were one long trip through groovy depths Hell (The album is in no way satanic, just chaotic, and that's why I say hell). It's dance, it's hip, it's poetic, it's artsy, and chaotic, what can I say? I really dig this album. But it took me a while to have the patients for it. That is why I give it 4 stars. Overall...it's an amazing album.

    3 out of 5 stars Intermittently awesome.......2004-02-07

The Rapture is kind of an exciting band. The terms "dance punk" and "disco punk" get thrown around a lot when people describe them. Those descriptions are apt in the right context.

The music on "out of the races and onto the tracks" is built around snarling garage guitar, screaming vocals, jumpy bass, and fast treble-y drums. The disco label undoubtedly refers to Matty Safer's upbeat bass work, and is most evident on the catchy, passionate title track. If you're the kind of person that'll buy a CD for one song, give track one a listen, then place your order.

If you're a little more discerning or budget conscious, you might want to be wary of the rest of the album. "Modern Romance" and "Caravan" combine obnoxious punk with early psychedelic influences more along the lines of Iron Butterfly and Ten Years After than Studio 54 denizens. "The Pop Song" offers a noise-pop build-up that disintegrates into falsetto misery.

The Rapture is a little hard to listen to but also promising. I wouldn't say that they're an incredibly original band (compare track one with Gang of Four's "Outside the Trains Don't Run on Time"), but with their melange of influences, they do some things no other band is doing. Worth a listen, but probably not a purchase for most music listeners.

    4 out of 5 stars New Sound.......2003-10-20

By now most people that are in the know about music have heard some form of dance punk. However, most people dont realize that the Rapture were one of the first bands to take the beats from the disco bands of the 70s and add the attitude and simplicity of discos rival punk to make some of the most interesting music of the new millenium. get this before echos, it will make you apreciate the rapture so much more.

5 out of 5 stars There is hope for innovation!.......2003-05-05

My ears pricked up to this song when I rented a DVD of the film, The Rules of Attraction (a really great low-brow art piece). This group swung my tired old butt back to like 1980, when I used to listened to about 8 bands a week in small clubs. (R.E.M., Ramones, Black Flag, ....)Some of those bands set the tone for the end of the 20th century. Rapture is as fresh and potent and they will surely take us back to a new renaissance of independant creativity. Their minimalist approach to playing real instruments, sounds like they just invented the concept.

To understand this review, take a look at the reviews of the other volumes in this series...
Some of the music on this series is so weird and beautiful that the composers should be grateful that it is released here. They should think of this series as a sampler which might atract us, the general public, into further investigation of their work, which we most probably would have never had the chance to hear it or become aware of its existence or of the composers/artists. Don't be so greedy... for I believe you have been done a favor. The same goes for the other volumes of this series. TWO THUMBS UP!

Opening with Clara Rockmore's reworking of Tchaikovsky with the theremin, and finishing with one of Brian Eno's ambient soundscapes, OHM artfully succeeds in its goal of giving a representative (as opposed to the impossible, comprehensive) overview of the first several decades of electronic music. Over 3 discs, 42 compositions, and 96 pages of notes and photos, OHM clearly illustrates the producers' and contributing writers' point that early electronic music is much of the foundation of contemporary music. Herein lies the connective tissue bridging musique concrète, 20th-century classical, electronic experimentation, and the theoretical avant-garde to psychedelia, ambient, dub, techno, electro, and synthpop and the globalization of sound. The groundbreaking uses of loops, sampling, drones, remixes, and cut-and-paste technology are put fully into context. The diversity of music included makes any sort of summation impossible, but that is also the point: electronic music is not really a genre, but an open field of endless possibility. From John Cage's famous "William's Mix" of tape snippets to Karkheinz Stockhausen's electronic orchestral compositions, from David Tudor and Holger Czukay's experiments in unrelated blendings of audio elements to David Behrman's supremely peaceful duet between computers and musicians, the aural renegades on OHM tread where none (save a few of their contemporaries) had gone before. The liner notes convey the incredible amount of hard work and experimentation it took to stitch together many of these pieces in the predigital era. Putting aside the inevitable quibbles about what's missing (much of it due to legal and/or logistical issues), a more complete collection of musical eggheads, eccentrics, and visionaries is hard to imagine. --Carl Hanni

4 out of 5 stars excellent but uncomplete.......2006-11-12

Althought most of the music here is an excellent collection of electronic music history, this 3 CDs lack of the important contribution given by the RAI phonology studios of Milan, Italy in the 50s
(which was bigger than Koln's WDR studios) with Bruno Maderna, Luciano Berio and Luigi Nono.
This is a big mistake. Milans studios were the biggest of europe and produced many important electroacoustic pieces.
If the collection aim to describe faithfully electronic music history, it should include this artists too.

4 out of 5 stars To call it music may be a bit limiting. .......2006-10-24

Some of the tracks on here are "music". That is that they contain all the bits we're trained to experience as music -- melody, etc. Some are not, and the composers would be the first people to tell you that. A lot of these works are reactions to ingrained rules, so they're bound to be jarring.

A more successful way to approach such a broad and varied collection of audio experimentation is to think of it as curated sound. This isn't something to wash the dishes to, or to seduce someone to (although if you did manage to seduce someone with the recordings on this anthology, HOLD ON TO THAT PERSON, because they've got to be a keeper). These are unique sound textures that deserve a close, probably solitary listen, and I think if you're in the right frame of mind, it can be a very rewarding listen.

My main complaint is sequencing: each dicrete piece follows it's own internal logic, so there are more than a couple rough gear changes. However, since each piece is so different, and the collection is so varied, I'm not sure that you could totally escape that.

    4 out of 5 stars A worthwhile collection.......2006-01-11

The OHM collection contains some of those ground breaking electronic compositions that have shaped today's styles, from the early electronic instruments of Theremin and Martenot, through Pierre Schaeffer's Music Concrete tape music and the electronic music of Stockhausen and Subotnick, to the mainframe computer output of Risset and Chowning.

It is unfair to mark this collection down due to the production quality and 'musicality' of its contents, to do so would be to staggeringly miss the point of the development of electronic music through the 20th Century. What this collection shows is the ideas behind those at the cutting edge of the genre before many could even conceive of such output. That said it is hard going at points, as experimental music can be.

Highlights for me are no doubt Olivier Messiaen's 'Oraison' on CD 1, David Tudor's 'Rainforest Version 1' on CD 2 and on CD 3 David Behrman's 'On the Other Ocean' and Maryanne Amacher's 'Living sound Patent Pending'.

    1 out of 5 stars OhMyGodHowDreadful.......2005-08-15

Ok, this collection is supposed to be early works and, thus not expected to be very sophisticated or polished. But the OHM collection sounds like the first attempt of a spastic cat turned-loose on a Moog keyboard. When it is not boreing, this collection of random and dissonant sounds (I can't call it music) is without any redeeming qualities to make it worth while. Don't get me wrong, I am a long-time fan of Wendy (nie Walter) Carlos and some other real pioneers of electronic music. However, I find that the Ohm collection has no similar qualities and is a major disappointment.

    5 out of 5 stars Kid Stockhausen.......2003-01-17

This is required listening for anybody interested in the history of electronic music. Although implicitly aiming for the techno music audience, this audio history is overwhelmingly focused on the classical avant-garde of electro-acoustic composers. The closest you'll get to pop electronica is the Brian Eno track at the end of the third disc. No Kraftwerk, no Moroder, etc. Instead "OHM" manages to point to the continuities between, say, John Cage and artists currently working at the experimental edges of electronica (so-called IDM). It seems to be saying, "You think Kid 606 is visionary? Well check out this Stockhausen track from '59!"

Admittedly, some of the songs are much more interesting to think about than they are to listen to. Some of the early pieces that were made through thosuands of hours of pains-taking tape-splicing could be made today in an afternoon with a digital audio editor and a few effects plug-ins.

It is a beautiful package, containing a 90 page booklet of essays, quotations from the featured artists, and photographs. What all music should be: an education in daring.

        Album Description

Hidros 3 was written for Sonic Youth by Mats Gustafsson in connection with KulturBro 2000. The piece was premiered on Oct 9th 2000 at the Ystad Konstmuseum in south of Sweden. Together, Gustafsson & Sonic Youth teamed up with American guitar legend Loren Mazzacane Connors, Lotta Melin, David Stackenäs & Lindha Kallerdahl. Armed with 5 guitars, electronics, voices, audiobox & contrabass saxophone, the group created a massive & monumental sound. Hidros 3 is in many ways related to Sonic Youth`s releases on their own SYR label (Sonic Youth Records) & their soundtrack to the French movie "Demonlover". But what differs this albums from their past SYR albums is the absolutely stunning vocal by Kim Gordon that gives the album almost a pop feel. Hauntingly beautiful, raw & poetic! The characteristic "spoken" vocals from Kim Gordon & the moody, atmospheric & dissonant sound makes you think of the NYC in the early 80`s & the first albums by Sonic Youth.

5 out of 5 stars Great Songs... must have.......2006-07-18

I'm a big pumpkins fan and have been for years. I don't do many reviews, but I felt compelled here just because of how good these songs are. "Today", of course, is a classic pumpkins song, but in my opinion the two b-sides eclipse the single. "Hello Kitty Kat" and "Obscured" are two of my top 10 pumpkins songs in their own right. However, you should skip this and just get the album 'Pisces Iscariot', which has these b-sides and a lot of others. It's a b-sides collection better than most rock bands could ever hope to achieve with their a-sides.

5 out of 5 stars Best B-Sides from any Pumpkins' single.......2005-10-04

"Today" is a great song and a remarkable landmark for the Pumpkins as a successful single and an overall great song to enjoy. This single disc itself, in addition to having "Today", has some of the best B-Sides the Pumpkins ever wrote. "Hello Kitty Kat" should have been on Siamese Dream no doubt. It's a hard-rocker with a sly, catchy chorus worthy of play. And following the shred-fest of that song comes the soothing "Obscured". This is one of my favorite acoustic Smashing Pumpkins songs. It is so heartfelt and emotional. But you can get both of these songs on "Pisces Iscariot", so you should go buy that right now. But regardless, if you are a diehard fan, you should get this.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Single from the SD-Era.......2003-12-29

This is an auditory summary of Pumpkins Siamese-Dream Era Rock/Dream Pop/Indie/Grunge. The three songs are to DIE FOR. No really. You could go spend $14.99 for Pisces Iscariot for the latter two songs, but um if you're running low on cash, or you just aren't harcore enought to sit through that other b-side album, this is for you! Today is a classic mainstream rock song, but yet is still has its induviduality, and does not fade into the category of overproduced-record corp-rock. Hello Kitty Kat is almost punk, seriously! Its got the happy hardcore music with some mildly disturbing lyrics, great song. The last track just rules, a tad mellower though.

This is another pumpkin single filled with groovy photos and artwork! By the Way D'Arcy's sister, Molly, is on the cover, if you didn't know that (but because your a pumpknhead, you knew that :D ).

          5 out of 5 stars Utterly amazing!.......2001-12-22

This CD has my three favorite Smashing Pumpkins songs on it. "Today" is my all-time favorite Pumpkins song, it makes the hair on my neck stand up. "Hello Kitty Kat" is awesome, it's one of their better loud songs. Lastly, "Obscurred", which is one of their top acoustic songs ever. If you only buy one Smashing Pumpkins CD in your life, make it this one.

          5 out of 5 stars pumpkins rock!.......2000-08-07

as SLICK_CLYDE says the song has a great begining but the afterparts shouldn't be so much defined as loud but their unique heavy metal sensation.the words may depress some by the lonelyness billy implplies but its still cool in many ways. You'd just have to listen to it, and while you,re at that listen to tonight tonight.
