The Grande Dame of Cuban Music, Maria Teresa Vera was Not Only the Greatest Female Trova Singer of all Time, She was also One of the Form's Greatest Singers, Period. Vera Became a Professional Musician and Songwriter — and a Mightily Popular One at that — During the Early 20th Century, When Such a Career was Virtually Unheard of for a Woman. Her Skill at Singing Trova — a Rural Folk Song Style that Predated the Son Dance Craze — Helped Lay the Groundwork for the Explosion of Cuban Popular Music in the '30s and '40s, and her Fame as a Trovadora Lasted Well after the Style was Eclipsed by Other Popular Trends. Maria Teresa Vera was Born in Guanajay, in the Province of Pinar Del Rio, on February 6, 1895. She Began Learning the Guitar from Jose Diaz, and in 1911, at Age 15, Performed Publicly in Havana at a Tribute to Arquimedes Pous. Vera Subsequently Formed the First of Several Duos, a Format She Would Favor Throughout her Career, with Rafael Zequeira; In Addition to Performing in Cuba.

An album that's justifiably titled. Carlos "Patato" Valdes is indeed a legend of Cuban percussion, having played with Herbie Mann and Tito Puente among others, before leading his own ensembles. This record compiles tracks from his two Ritmo y Candela recordings of the mid-'90s, and an absolute joy it is. Patato's congas percolate at the front of the mix, heading a band comprised of some superb, and often adventurous (check out the piano on "Son de Patato"), Cuban jazz players. But things become especially interesting when African players join the mix on "Kora Son" and "Senor Blues/Mbuka Enoka" as the Horace Silver classic mutates into West African melody. Throughout it's Patato who's in command, his playing an inspiration to the younger generation accompanying him. He might be in his 70s here, but like the Buena Vista Social Club musicians, he's still very much at the top of his game and making a very joyful noise indeed. Cuban congero innovator Carlos "Patato" Valdes has added rhythmic spice to Afro-Cuban jazz albums for over fifty years and is still going strong. This compilation reissues selections from two Grammy nominated recordings of the mid 90's. Patato is joined by fellow percussion greats Orestes Vilato and Changuito, and features the fine pianist Rebecca Mauleon and multi-wind player Enrique Fernandez. In fact, everyone on these recordings contributes zesty flavors to a tasty stew. If you hunger for fine Afro-Cuban jazz, this album will satisfy.

I love the fact that the tracks are long unlike some Latin Jazz CDs this one lets loose with music that makes you want to jam till you cant no more. Great production, great musicians! Patato is unreal! I would love to see him live! Tracks 1,2,3,4 & 9 are my favorites, but the entire cd is great

Not the tribute Chico deserves.......2000-02-22

This disc is patently inferior to Chico's earlier recordings -- be sure to check the Verve anthology, "Cuban Blues," for Chico and his own bands at their best. "The Original Mambo Kings" is another terrific starting point -- several of the most important pieces that he composed for Machito's Afro-Cubans can be found there, including "The Afro-Cuban Jazz Suite" and the famous Cubop standard, "Gone City."

LATIN JAZZ AT IT'S BEST.......2000-01-20

I can not get tired of listen to this CD. Excellent production and top guest artists such as Paquito D'Rivera, Arturo Savoval, Cachao. This should have been nominated for this year Grammy. Great piano work by Arturo O'Farrill.

In this big band format, Chico O'Farrill brings to his fans more beatiful tracks. "Guagasi" is the base of two anthology themes: "Te Quiero", is a good motive to the brightness solo of Gato Barbieri's tenor sax; and, the beatiful balad "Sin tu Amor" with the sensual voice of Vivian Ara. In my opinion, the top moment in this Chico's CD to be enough in the "Trumpet Fantasy" suite, dedicated to Wynton Marsalis, one of the more brillant music friends of that legendary director and composer in afro-cuban jazz music.

Celia's Golden Years.......2007-04-08

The tracks on this anthology are drawn from Celia's Seeco records years (1950-1960s). Celia is mostly backed by the Cuban group La Sonora Matancera (a small-ish ensemble), though some tracks feature the Rene Hernandez Orchestra. The grooves are classic mambos, son montunos, cha chas, etc. The album was compiled by Dominique Roome, who contributes an essay on the period of Cruz's career captured here.

Album Details

Celina Gonzalez is One of the Great Vocalists of Afro-cuban Music. Although Little Known Outside of Cuba, Gonzalez Has Been a Major Star in her Homeland Since the 1940s When She Shared a Duo with her Late Husband, Reutillio Dominguez. In the Decade Before the Cuban Revolution, Gonzalez and Dominguez Developed a Large Following for their Vocals Harmonies and Lightly-arranged,guitar and Percussion, Approach to Musica Campesina, a Rural Style of Salsa. Although They Continued to Perform after the Revolution, the Duo was Prevented from Taking their Music Out of Cuba. Since her Husband's Death in 1971, Gonzalez Has Been Accompanied by Larger Groups Including her Son, Rene Lima's Band, Campo Alegre. Gonzalez's Greatest Success as a Songwriter Came When her Song, "Santa Barbara," was Recorded by Celia Cruz.
