The End of the Big Voice?.......2007-04-16

This CD, which is truly fine overall, reminds me of Marilyn Horne's lament that we have probably seen the end of the big voice and it makes me sad. I agree with the reviewer who refers to "microphonies". And more justice could be done to Bjorling's voice with a better transfer. But at some point, music becomes a matter of taste and I prefers singers who have the instrument and the support and the training, whether formal or not, to just let fly and take a chance on making a mistake. Domingo can be wonderful and so can his musicianship but he tends to be so stiff. I have to wonder at the virulence and asperity with which some people go after Pavarotti. It's true that late in his career he made some questionable recordings but the answer to that is simple: don't buy them. At his best, he belongs for all time in the top echelon of tenors. I love this CD and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys great (big) voices.

Highly recommend this CD with these beloved arias of the greatest tenors in opera. I have owned this CD for a couple of years and purchased another for a friend who always requests that I play it ... perfect for listening in the car, dinner, bridge games, relaxation ... just so perfect. You won't be disappointed in this one.

A great disc,combination of the greatest tenors of the 20th century and some of the most beautiful music ever written in any century,a must addition to any opera lovers collection.

Plesantly surprised..........2006-01-14

I don't remember how I found this CD the other day surfing through the "Amazon" such as it is, but I did. I listened to a few clips provided & on the strength of that, I purchased this CD.

First it is a great buy. A booklet with pictures of each tenor, a small bio, the year recorded and TRANSLATIONS of each aria are provided. This is really nice. It seems more & more that translations are being left out. Being a former opera singer, I may know most of the words, but sometimes it's just nice to read along (sometimes it's just nice to listen too).

Being on the Decca label, there is admittedly quite a few Pavarotti selections. Out of 20 selections, he has 6 of them. But I love Pavarotti, so this is no problem for me. These are all early recordings & his voice is magnificent! Being a singer, I still marvel at his ability to sing "All'armi!" on a high D and still say the 2nd syllable "mi" on such a note! WOW. There is also of course his very sweet, impassioned and lyrical turn as Rodolfo in "La Boheme" as well as the lesser known (although I still have it on casette) "La Favorita" which has a particularly high tessitura.

Also featured are a young Plácido Domingo singing a VERY nice "Flower song/ La fleur que tu m'avais jetée" from Carmen. He usually sounds too pushed for me on the top notes (as one might expect from a Pavarotti fan, I like free top notes) but in this recording he is pretty darn fabulous. He also sings an aria from "Tales of Hoffman/Les Contes d'Hoffman" and I have always felt that he, like Neil Schicoff, were well suited to this role.

Lamentably there are only one selection each from Carreras, Correlli, Monaco, Aragall & Kollo. Especial kudos to the young recording they feature for Aragall. He had a very free and nice high tenor well suited to Verdi. Of course as his career went forward with the natural darkening of his voice and the "heavier" roles, he did start to develop a wobble. But this recording is before that. His top, his phrasing are all beautifully done in his featured aria from "La Traviata."
Mario del Monaco's "E lucevan le stelle" is hauntingly beautiful and has such a wonderful pianissimo in it that it makes you just want to gasp for beauty's sake. I now know every tenor I've heard sing this aria was trying to emulate what he did.

This is a great CD because it does bring together on one CD some of the greatest singers of the 20th/21st century. Bergonzi, di Stefano, Björling, in addition to the previously mentioned artists is quite an impressive collection. I'm sure there's only one of each for Carreras, Aragall (I believe they are formerly EMI/Angel artists) and perhaps some of the others because they are "imported" from another label. There's so much Pavarotti on this CD because he IS a Decca artist.

A highly recommended CD, affordable, not the usually obscure and unpolished artists that are sometimes found on compilations. Plus acutal linear notes and translations. Nicely done, Decca!!!

Absolutely Agree About Corelli.......2005-05-27

Franco Corelli's "Nessun Dorma" is still the best of them all - clear, passionate, and exciting. (And those final two notes...! Gives me chills just to think of it.) I was fortunate enough to see him live in both "Turandot" and "Romeo and Juliet" a year before his retirement, and he was still a Calaf and a Romeo to die for... as, of course, Liu and Juliet did! As it is, I tend to buy compilations depending on how much Corelli they include - though Bjorling is a strong second, and I have happy memories of Domingo. Long live the Golden Age of Operatic Tenors!

The labels that are now gathered under the Universal Classics umbrella have a pretty impressive scorecard in the area of classical compilations. We've seen The Greatest Opera Show on Earth, The Yellow Guide: Classical Music, Best of the Millennium, and now there's The No. 1 Opera Album. But that's no surprise, since Universal has some of the finest interpreters in its catalogue to draw from. This two-CD set (at the price of one), for example, brings together the likes of Cecilia Bartoli, Renée Fleming, Luciano Pavarotti, Kiri Te Kanawa, Sir Georg Solti, Herbert von Karajan, and many more. Yet the other key to a successful compilation is canny anthologizing, and here again, you have a nice selection to give you a smattering of opera's heavyweights from the Italian, German, and French repertory (there's even a step outside the standard framework with an aria from Dvorák's lovely Rusalka). Ranging from 1959 to 1997, the choices from back catalogue will doubtless be the entry ticket for many into this grandest of the arts. --Sarah Chin

The beautiful gift of opera..........2007-07-17

This 2-CD set is absolutely wonderful! You can close your eyes and feel like you're actually at the opera, listening to those beautiful voices bringing tears to your eyes. Nessun Dorma still stirs up emotions in me, no matter how many times I hear it. Great examples of opera to give someone wanting to get interested in this style of music.

This CD set has a lot of familiar music on it, so if you're a newbie, you might want to try starting with this. There are some great pieces on the first CD. I usually don't even make it to the second.

This Cd, has the very best of Opera
covering mainly from the classcal
to the to the romantic periods, a most
memorable selection here is Leo Nucci
in a lagendary performance of Rossini's
"Largo al Factotum" from "Il Barbiere di Seviglia"
also Andrea Bocelli in his performance of Leoncavallo's
memorable "Matinatta" here in an orchestrated version.
Indeed some of opera's most loved arias are in this recording
various conductors, orchestras, and soloists. All in their
very best. Indeed a five-star recording...

Every track on this CD contains a beautiful melody, many of them easily recognizable, all of them exuding tranquility. "O mio babbino caro" from Puccini's Gianni Schicchi opens the disc, with Bell delicately accompanied by a harp and spinning the long melody with great sensitivity. Bellini's "Casta diva" from Norma lives up to its reputation as the epitome of bel canto in Bell's hands; his violin sings. The middle movement of Mozart's 21st Piano Concerto takes well to the violin, and Debussy's "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair" is played with great warmth and sensuality. It would be easy to turn a recital like this into treacle, but Bell is wise enough to realize that the music is already sweet enough and he plays with great reserve and a minimum of sentimental slides. The light accompaniments always support, with woodwinds prominent but used with grace. This CD, in short, is a beauty: a fine gift, a lovely mood setter. --Robert Levine

I am a Joshua Bell fan, and this album is the one that I enjoy with my dessert, it calms me at the end of the day, and makes me think of my 6 year old granddaughter's visit. She has to have music on during meals at her home. Usually it is some kid stuff, but I do not have anything like she has at home, so I chose to play Joshua Bell during our dinner. When I placed the dessert before her, she looked up at me and said: "This music is so beautiful, I want to play the violin just like that". What more could I say.
He is inspiring, and she is right. This album is beautiful.

That's how I want to play this CD! It's a wonderful line-up of rich, mellow, captivating compositions played with a warmth and vibrancy that is seldom heard. Joshua at his very best. You won't be disappointed.

Non-standard CD format.......2007-04-22

The music on this CD deserves five stars, but the CD itself is a non-standard format that doesn't work on all players. There's a tiny warning on the back of the CD. You won't notice the warning until you discover that the CD doesn't work on your player. My Macintosh computer wouldn't read the non-standard format so there was no way for me to listen in my office or put the music on my iPod.

A friend's PC was able to read the CD and make a copy in standard format that can be read on any player, including my Mac. The story had a happy ending, but I can not comprehend why the publisher chose the oddball CD specification.

The music is excellent and worth the trouble of making a copy, but the publisher really shouldn't make you go to that effort just to listen to a CD that you paid for.

There were some ugly songs in here.(I absolutely hate to say that about anything Andrea.)But the good far outshone the bad.
Un Nouvo Giorno stunned me the first time I heard it.It was so unlike anything I had heard from Andrea- very pop.But it soon grew on me.
Liberta is amazing.Very catchy and upbeat.
Sempre O Mai is my favorite.It keeps its tempo up and has the best of Andrea and pop.Great song.

So this album was really a double album with pop and classical songs interspersed.A good mix from the master.

When I ordered this on 12/04/2006 they said I would have it before Christmas. Then right before Christmas the delivery date was changed to mid-January. So I had to cancel my order and go, at the last minute, buy it at a store because it was a Christmas present. I wasn't happy about it and won't be buying from amazon for the holidays any longer.

I can't speak more highly of this collection of Pavrotti's songs. I keep this two CD pack in my car so I can enjoy it on my way to and from work. Even after I have arrived, I find myself sitting in my car waiting for a song to end. Walking out on a song seems sacriligious. While I grew up listening to Caruso and Lanza, there is no question that Pavrotti is the Master! Although, I do have to admit Pavrotti has the greater advantage of modern recording technology to better present his talent than Caruso and Lanza had. However, Lanza definitely didn't have the power that Pavrotti has. With Caruso, we will never know... I highly recommend this collection of Pavrotti's, if you are a Pavrotti fan. If you aren't, buy it anyway and become one:)

TRAP MUZIK, the cd that put him on the map.......2007-07-25

Everybody should know TI by now. He been in the rap game for a minute. He bought it with this cd. He had the street athem 24's, which was a straight single; but rubberband man is the song that blew his career up. He was also on bone crusher's neva scared which he dropped a fire verse. Other hot tracks on this cd include the title track, i can't quit, be easy; a song in which he addressing the haters, let's get away; a smooth track that have TI talking to the ladies, the afore metioned 24's, rubberband man. For every TI cd that came out he had at least one deep song on it. I still love you have TI talking to different people in his family split into 3 verses. Bezzle should have been a single. Probably one of the hottest tracks on this cd. Bun B and MJG delivered fire verses. The last 2 tracks on here were straight as well. Not saying TI went pop after this cd; but the next 3 TI cd's had a different vibe. With that said, cop this classic cd from one of the best southern artists out right now.

T.I. P.I.M.P. He's the Man.......2007-07-11

Since his sophomore album was released in 2003, T.I. has officially blown up. His singles "U Don't Know Me," "What U Know", "Bring Em Out", and "Big Things Poppin" are all major hits. With the release of "T.I. Vs. T.I.P." this month, T.I. now has 5 albums under his belt (2001's I'm Serious, 2003's Trap Muzik, 2004's Urban Legend, 2006's King, and 2007's T.I. Vs. T.I.P.). Trap Muzik, to be honest, is an album I thoroughly enjoy. I bumped the clean version like crazy when it first dropped, and have recently obtained an explicit copy and can't stop playing it. It's like I'm discovering it all over again. And if you're sleeping on his earlier albums, especially this one, then you better wake up.

I can't find a weak track on here. The title song "Trap Muzik" featuring Mac Boney has T.I. spitting about what the industry really is: a trap. ("This ain't no album this ain't no game this a trap!") "I Can't Quit" has T.I. speaking about his haters and how sometimes he wants to give up but keeps doing his thing. "Be Easy" was released as a single and you can tell why. The beat which samples Al Wilson's Somebody to Love really complements T.I.'s flow well as he boasts lazily and tells you that you don't want no problems with him. "No More Talk" has always been a favorite of mine. San Holmes samples Gary Wright's Can't Find the Judge and Tip spits some nice lyrics:

"When they run it into a tower, they just say it's Saddam
Screaming Allah the moment that it's hitting the building
With total disregard for all men women and children
See ni**as get killed when people mix they money with feelings
I'm filling my money up in the wall some in the ceiling
I'm just one of the millions of ni**az who ?

I'd rather be dying for something instead of living for nothing."

"Doin My Job" has T.I. telling his neighbors that he's not trying to cause destruction when he hustles, he's just trying to make a living. Kanye West provides the perfect beat. "Let's Get Away", produces by Jazze Pha, was also released as a single. I'm feeling this track; it's very chilled out and T.I. knows how to spit game to the ladies. "24's" was the song that made me check Tip out. I loved the beat, I loved his flow, and I still love it to this day. It was the perfect choice for the first single. "Rubberband Man" blew up as well. Produced by David Banner, T.I. used the rubberband to represent his struggle, as he says so in the song. "Look What I Got" is a hot braggadacio song with a tight beat by DJ Tooomp. "I Still Luv You" is one of T.I.'s most personal songs, other than "I Still Ain't Forgave Myself". He raps to his girlfriend, his dad, and his little daughter:

"How could I look her in her eyes and holla dat aint mine
Her stomach gettin' bigger, and time is gettin' close
Six, seven, eight, nine months and I ain't told my folks
Not just messiah mama, hell, I had told your granny
Three kids in two years, baby, daddy had it
But I ain't ashamed of you, I'm more ashamed of me
It's not at all your fault, you'd be better off blamin' me
But now I realize, where the problem lies
Forgive me babygirl, I apologize"

"Let Me Tell You Something" is a more grown up ladies track, something I wish Tip would do a bit more. Again Kanye West laces the beat with a dope sample of "I Want To Be Your Man". T.I. produces his own track for "T.I. Vs. T.I.P.", a dope cut where his two alter egos go at each other. I liked the idea for this album, but in present day 2007 I think TI is just trying to capitalize off his two names. "Bezzle" features Eightball, MJG, and Bun B. Now when you have three southern legends and a legend in the making on one track, you know it's gonna be nothing short of spectacular. "Kingofdasouth" has some more of those bragging lyrics. He has reinforced this claim plenty of times since this album dropped, but he's never sounded hotter than he does here. "Be Better Than Me" is a cut where you can apply the "Do as I say, not as I do" line. Tip tells a youngster that he can make something out of himself without turning into a young hustler. "Long Live Da Game" kinda serves as an outro song.

T.I. created an album that is nothing short of fire with this one. From "Trap Muzik" to "Long Live Da Game", everything is hot. Also, T.I. rolled solo for the most part, only having 4 guests, where 3 are on one track. Tip gets a chance to shine and the results are phenomenal. Since this record, Tip went a little commercial with "Urban Legend" and so on, but he's never lost his swagger or his flow. To date, however, this remains his best album with fire production and on point lyrics. "I'm Serious" comes in at a close second. If you think T.I. is weak because of his latest offerings, I suggest you give Trap Muzik a spin.

When I buy a CD, I expected to like more then 3 or 4 songs out of 18. My expectations for this Cd were obviously way too high. This was a very disappointing CD because the beats weren't catchy enough to keep my attention.

"Trap Muzik" - Better Than I Thought.......2007-06-26

Without a doubt, T.I. is one of my most favourite rappers in the game. And no, I'm not saying this because he's one of the biggest rappers of the moment - although I only found out about him sometime around 2004 when "Bring `Em Out" was released, the dude obviously has talent, as his Gold-selling sophomore album, "Trap Muzik", proves.

Surprisingly, there's a lot of substance to be found here, much of it driven by T.I.'s Southern-drawled, swagger-loaded delivery. Although much of the album is spent on venting out on inferior rappers, as on the hard-hitting Southern bounce of the Mac Boney-assisted title track, "King Of Da South" or "No More Talk", a Rock-inflected insight into life in the hood, there's still plenty of substance in the following - "Doin' My Job", a Kanye West-produced insight into T.I.'s childhood and life; "I Still Luv You", a (mostly) heartfelt ode to his family and/or lover; "T.I. vs. T.I.P.", an introspective self-conversation that's surpriisngly original; and the uplifting "Be Better Than Me", where T.I. speeds up his flow over Sanchez Holmes' wah wah guitar/organ-driven production, is one of the most immediately gripping songs on the album, even if the song and it's "be better than me" implication contradicts the braggadocious s***-talk and opponent rapper put-downs he shows across the record, such as on tracks like the DJ Toomp-produced banger "Be Easy."

The biggest surprise, though, is rapper/producer David Banner, who lays out a surprisingly heavy beat for T.I. to spit his game over - T.I.'s not really saying much, but the gloomy organ, double-speed hi-hats, bassline and chorus-bound kiddie choir make the listening experience more enjoyable. If only "Trap Muzik" was filler-free; in other words, the ladies joints bring this album down. "Lets Get Away" is the most obvious example - an anonymous female crooner and Jazze Pha lend their vocals to the smooth hook over the aforementioned dude's smooth blend of organ and wah wah guitar, but the track completely falls apart, largely because of the sleazy sexual innuendo that slides out of T.I.'s mouth (slightly more specifically, his come-ons include squirting semen in their faces, sticking "it" into ecstacy-affected chicks who are licking his face...you get the idea); and although "Let Me Tell You Something" is less crass, it simply lacks sincerity. Then of course there's the materialistic ode to cars ("24's") and actual materialism ("Look What I Got") that not even T.I. can get away with (unlike almost every other rapper, I can put up with T.I.'s materialistic references easier).

All in all, "Trap Muzik" is a solid debut with more substance than I expected, even if there are bits of filler to be found amongst the hard-hitting Southern music and smooth, "semi-Soul-ful" sounds that fill this album. 4 stars!

Filler: Let me tell you something(too sugary for anybody), T.I vs T.I.P.(boring filler), Bezzle(tight beat wack collabo), Be better than me(tries to be positive but fall flat on his face) and Trap Musik. Bottom Line: T.I second album is no sophomore jinx by a long shot. T.I flows get better with each song like No More Talk, Doin My Job, Look What I Got, 24s etc. Even though he has songs on here he should have 86'd with the quickness like Bezzle, Let me tell you some thing, T.I vs T.I.P. and Trap muzik this album still has enough hits to keep it within your arm's reach. Not bad for a southern rapper you werent thinking too much about when he first came out.

Andre Bocelli is no opera singer, but he shows far more potential in this album than does another pop-vocalist tenor-wannabe, Michael Bolton. For one thing, he can shake off the crooner mannerisms and really sing when performing music that calls for it. At his best, he has a rich, dark timbre and an easy, unforced top. At other times, however, the tone turns dry and thin and the high notes are constricted, the inconsistency suggesting a lack of technique. Never does one get the impression that he could be heard over a medium-sized orchestra without amplification. I am 45 years old. The reason why this is something I am mentioning, is to let all of you reading my review know what age group I am in. It might be important to the age you are in knowing what I have to say. I have four Andrea Bocelli CD's and they are all wonderful. I love each of them. My mom turned me on to him, and, since I love Josh Groban, I decided to listen to Andrea Bocelli and see what all her fuss over him was about. I'm glad I did. I am half Italian and half Spanish. I don't know either language, but when I listen to both Andrea and Josh, I don't have to. They make the music tell a story, and instantly, you understand something about the words from just the sound of their voices. If you love Josh Groban, then Andrea Bocelli is someone you should give a listen to. His voice is soothing, powerful, and romantic. I am looking forward to getting more of his CD's. Great Stuff!!!

What I have heard about Andrea Bocelli is bimodal--some think that he is not up to the operatic repertoire and is way overrated; others see him as a fine singer, from a nontraditional background and career path. What I hear on this CD is fine singing, with some limitations. He was once a law school student; he played in piano bars. He took lessons from the great Franco Corelli. Some examples of his work illustrate his skills:

"Questa O quella" is a nice romp. His smooth voice moves through this aria nicely. His voice is not a big one. On the other hand, his musicianship seems fine (thank goodness none of the sobbing and catches that some tenors adopt).

In Puccini's "Che gelida manina" (from "La Boheme"), he again sings smoothly. He has a nice sound to his voice. The high note is a bit thin, but certainly not as bad as some critics would have it. A serviceable version, in short.

Then, the twin arias from "Tosca"--"Recondita armonia" and "E lucevan le stelle." Both are well sung. His version of "Recondita armonia" compares well with other versions. He certainly has no reason to hang his head. When he amps up the volume, his voice is not quite as rich as many other tenors, bit it is still fine. Top notes, as observed before, are a bit thin, but--again--hardly reason for lamentation. This is nicely sung. My notes for "E lucevan le stelle" simply say "Ibid." That is, one could write a very similar set of comments.

The last piece is from a different tradition--a selection from Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor," "Tome degli avi miei." Smoothly sung. A bit thin on higher notes. Overall, though, a nice job.

As I listen to his work, I think that Bocelli does a good job in the standard tenor repertoire. Is he a great tenor? No. Is he a good tenor? Yes.

Why is there all this continuing controversy after so many years about whether or not Andrea Bocelli is - or is not - Operatically sound? All I know (and that's not saying much for me in this genre), is that after having listened to Amazon.com's sampling of the music on this Audio CD a few moments ago, I wept. Andrea Bocelli always makes me weep - because of his profound spiritual depth. And I don't care what anyone thinks on that issue. All I do know is this. The man sings from his soul...and nothing could surpass that - ever.

MamboCha's review was right on the money.

It is a shame that Emusica releases this item with such lousy sonics.

It sounds muffled and without the dynamics that the original CD or vinyl had.

To add insult to injury the artwork used on this CD is pretty cheesy since it appears that they got an LP from a flea market and they blacked out the price tag with a black magic marker (See upper right corner of the cover). They could have used the artwork from the original CD.

Avoid this item unless you do not have the old CD!!!

Horrible sound.......2007-02-21

I took the time to write this review because I consider Hector Lavoe to have been one of the best soneros ever ("son" is the original Cuban name to what was later called salsa; therefore, salsa singers are most times called soneros). Lavoe was not much of a composer, but was an extremely versatile original singer with a voice and timbre hard to match. This combined with great composers, writers, and orchestras; meant that "most" of the productions Hector Lavoe was in were worth the time, there was a collaboration of talent from everyone.

Lavoe started and became famous under the Fania label as the singer for the famous trumpet player Willie Colon and his band, they started in the late 60s and separated in early 80s. All those Willie Colon records made with Lavoe around the 1970s are landmarks in salsa history as well as some of Lavoe's solo pieces in the 80s. The image created around this two was to make them the bad boys of salsa. They had like a mature streetwise tone to them, in terms of music and lyrics; some songs were danceable, sad, instrumental, etc. In other words, they had musical substance: and for such, they usually were the top sellers in the label.

Why the low score here? The Fania label did millions during its LP era but during the CD era this music was horribly marketed and packaged (just a picture of the album cover, no info, no back art, and hard to find outside niche markets). So in 2006 as soon as the Fania repackaged and re-mastered CDs started to come out this album was one I was waiting for, I was curious to hear "Periodico de Ayer" (yesterdays newspaper) one of Lavoe's most (if not the most) original, memorable, instrumental, and famous classic re-mastered after so long. I was waiting for a more vibrant and dispersed sound. Boy oh boy, was I disappointed and surprised. Not only did it sound noticeable worst than the one on the old CD "Hector's Gold", I was surprised that [...] would be released in the first place. This sounded horrible and I mean it. It sounded like something they took out of an 8-track cassette that was taking sun inside a Chevrolet since the 70s and then sold in a flea market for 25 cents, please get the picture because it's not an exaggeration. It sounded baaaddd and it is a farce to call such thing re-mastered, please.

If you have the original then there is not much point in this, aside the booklet, and if you don't then I strongly recommend trying to get the now out of print "Hecto's Gold" which is the only other album to date that contains "Periodico de Ayer" with its original acceptable quality. Hector's Gold leaves a lot out but has "El Cantante" and "Periodico de Ayer" and trust me, just for that, is worth it especially if you are going to have only one Lavoe CD. I have many of these new Fania re-mastered CDs including others from Lavoe and Willie Colon, I can tell you that the early ones they took out were very inconsistent, some sounded great and vibrant, some others were questionable in comparison to the original CDs of the early 90s, but this one sadly is the one that just takes it a higher label of mediocrity. It was later that they got their act together. They have been informed of this but who knows if they will do anything about it.

Sadly Hector died in 1993, Willie Colon is alive and kicking but his new music is not. There were people behind that music that are not around anymore. Most of the Salsa being done these days is not worth a cent. All this great Puerto Rican, Cuban & Dominican artists that created the Salsa movement of the 70s in N.Y. with the Fania label grew up in the era when Cuba was the #1 in tropical music and was extremely influential. Cuban culture is the real mother of "Salsa", but under its long(over due) tyrannical communist government Cuba is by now almost as dead and destroyed as Lavoe's flesh. If it was not for the Dominican Johnny Pacheco who started the Fania label, and the Puerto Ricans in N.Y. that took the music, elaborated, and prolonged its existence, this music would have died before it did: Right in Havana clubs in the early 60s instead of in N.Y.C. clubs in the early 80s. This Fania guys were for the 60s & 70s what the Grammy winner Buena Vista Social Club was for the 40s & 50s, just the best among their era. I also recommend everything Lavoe did along with Willie Colon and also the albums La Lupe- Es la Reina, Cheo Feliciano- Cheo, Joe Battan- Saint Latin's Day Massacre, Tito Puente, etc, you can go on from there. Check the Fania site and the Descarga site. Also the Hector Lavoe movie "El Cantante" due summer of 2007. It could be worth it, lets hope so.

Where is Amore I?.......2001-02-16

This CD is a selection of arias from Italian operas. Most of the time when you get a compilation like this, you feel lucky if you like 2/3 of the selections. In this case, whoever did the selecting did a great job, there isn't a clinker in the lot. About half of the arias are by Puccini, the rest are by Verdi, Donizetti, and Giordano. Singers include Kiri Te Kanawa, Luciano Pavarotti, Richard Tucker, and Andrea Rost. There is enough variety to keep the whole CD interesting, yet the mood is consistent throughout. The sound is generally quite good, and while I am not generally a fan of live recordings, the audience response in the performance by Pavarotti really does add excitement to the presentation. Given the title of this CD, I assumed this was the second in a series, and I liked it so much I went looking for the original. Unfortunately, I can find no other CD on the Sony label titled Amore - too bad.

Cornucopia of Pavarotti's works.......2007-03-01

This is a "Super hits" CD, with over forty different cuts (quite a few of which have appeared elsewhere, of course). For those who are aficionados of Pavarotti, this is what might be called "hog heaven."

Disc 1 features estimable works such as "Nessun dorma" (well done, with his voice showing to good effect), "Che gelida manina" (excellently done, with good characterization), ""Celeste Aida" (elegantly sung), "Di quella pira" (a much better than average version), "E lucevan le stelle" (Pavarotti does a nice job in the Puccini-Verdi repertoire), "La donna e mobile" (sung with aplomb), "Recondita armonia" (the other aria from Tosca, which also shows Pavarotti's voice off to good effect), and so on.

Disc 2 is especially interesting, because it features a more popular set of works, from the redoubtable "O sole mio" (richly orchestrated and nicely sung, not overpowered by Pavarotti's operatic voice), "Core n'grato" (compare with Caruso's version), "Oh, holy night," "La danza" (spritely sung with excellent breath control in a treacherous song), "Santa Lucia" (again, smoothly sung), "Ave Maria" (seemingly sung with respect and affection).

A cornucopia of Pavarottiana. For those fans of Pavarotti, this "greatest hits" collection will be welcome. For those who may not be aware of this tenor when his voice was still fresh, this is a fine entrée to his work.

To combine a voice as beautiful as Pavarotti's with some of the world's greatest music and outstanding orchestras, and end up with this...`thing'...is unforgivable. After buying and listening to it, it brought to mind those painful words "A fool, a fool. I saw a fool today. I saw him in the mirror."

Great Tenor - Poor CD Quality.......2004-10-11

I have never been a huge fan of Maestro Pavarotti but I must admit that this compilation is a masterful collection of his operatic highlights.

I particularily enjoy the first disc which contains just about all the major tenor arias. The singing is superb and listening to this CD it becomes obvious what the fuss over the pre-3 Tenors Pavarotti was all about - the man really did have one of the greatest tenor voices of all time.
His diction was flawless, his line perfect and his interpretation in keeping with the greatest of the Italian tenors of days gone by.

The second disc is interesting in that it is a bit uneven. It contains a few neapolitan standards, a x-mas song, a duet with Frank Sinatra and some other random selections.

Overall this is a 5 star CD but due to the extremely low volume, particularily on the first and most important disc I can only give it a 4 star rating.

On a final note, anyone puzzeled by the current hype over the now againg and commercially over-blown Pavarotti should purchase this CD. This is the great tenor in his prime and as such a CD well worth having...even if you're not a Pavarotti fan.
I'm still not, but I recognize greatness when I hear it.

Great Music......Horrible Mastering.......2004-07-24

Pavarotti has a voice that can take hold of you and change your entire mood...even if you don't know Italian. The problem with this set is the mastering (mastering evens out the volumes and signal to noise ratio on an album). The first CD in this collection is so quiet that you literally have to crank your player to get any kind of volume. For a professional CD this is absolutely unacceptable.
The song choices are good with the exception of "My Way" with Frank Sinatra. Both singers sound ....ummm...let's just say less than their best on the recording. It sits out like a boil on a pretty girl's face.

With his wondrous soaring vocals and the humble demeanor within his strong body, Pavarotti is an inspiration to Italian- Americans everywhere - Italian-Americans like me. My family plays his beautiful operas on vinyl nearly every day in me Papa's little wine and cheese shop on 18th and Broadway. The customers compliment the music with glee, pinching my plump cheeks with merriment and wishing me well on their way out the door. Ah, how I love this land of America!!
