If you love the ever popular words of Jose Alfredo Jimenez, than this CD and the accompanying volume 2 are a must-have! His compositions are timeless and it's easy to understand why mainstream pop artists of Latin America continue to record his songs. This CD, coupled with Vol.11, makes for the most volume of work ever assembled of the late great composer and singer, Jose Alfredo. This volume, like vol.11 has 50 songs, so if you buy both CD's you get "Las 100 Clasicas." There are many compilations of "greatest hits" but this is without a doubt the best. It has all the familar fare plus alot of rare and more obscure recordings that are lesser known. Some of these gems were previously only on vinyl. What you get here is a variety of rancheras filled with Jose Alfredo's favorite subjects. A tormented soul, Jose Alfredo sings often of loves both lost and won. His songs are autobiographical in nature as he inevitably numbs his pain, both in song and life as he celebrates his victory with "otro tequila" or as he often invokes,"otro vaso de vino." The themes Jose Alfredo writes about include all the usual suspects. The characters are all here, the coward, the brave soul, the bartender and his clients, the chaos that often results, gunfights and fistfights, the women in all forms, wives and lovers, unappreciative, bandidas, lovely and kind, beautiful and senuous, he loved them all, both in real life and in song, querido Mexico with all it's beautiful places, including Mazatlan, Jalisco and Guanajuato to name a few, dogs and their owners, horses and their riders, money and all it's pitfalls, poverty and it's tragedies, sadness and happiness, luck and fate in life and death, God and La Virgen, boxers and other machos, in short if it existed in Jose Alfredo's life he wrote about it. Make no doubt though, his favorite themes were love, women and drinking, no wonder I love this guy! Someone like Jose Alfredo only passes briefly through this cosmos, like a shooting star he was brilliant but short lived. That he was able to create such voluminous work in his 47 years is mind boggling. This volume covers songs from his most active decade, the 60's, with the exception of a few classics from 1972. The mariachi is the world renowned Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan, often arranged and directed by the the brilliant Ruben Fuentes. There are so many great songs that it is hard to pick favorites but suffice to say that when Jose Alferdo's disc is playing the "next" button is never touched, I want the full experience. If you are like me, one can never get enough Jose Alfredo so this is perfect, to have 50 songs on one CD(2 discs) is nirvana. If you have alot of these songs already, like I do, don't worry, there are enough "unknown" gems here to make it worth it. Besides it is good to have one in the car and wherever else one stores their favorite CD's. If you are new to Jose Alfredo welcome and enjoy this great CD, if you're an old fan, enjoy revisiting the master. Jose Alfredo sigue siendo El Rey, for all times. Buy this CD for an awesome, historical musical experience to be lived over and over. "El disco es cultura."

Barrrio's belongs in every classical music lovers collection.......2006-09-05

This volume is played with the same mastery of Barrio's as Volume 1 from Naxos. As much as i liked volume 1 this collection is from his later period and contains nothing but masterpieces is even better. While he is famous for the Cathedral each piece on this disc is completey different and moving. I must thank Naxos for releasing these disc because I never would have heard of Barrio's.
According to the notes Barrio's is considered by many to be the best composr of music for guitar.
I would go even further by saying Barrio's belongs in every classical music collection not just people who like guitar music. He is a master and creates powerfully beautiful works.

Latin-American maestros at their very best.......1999-09-09

This recording brings the music of great composers from Mexico,Brazil,and Argentina.The Huapango by Moncayo is played beautiful and a well performed solo for trumpet and trombone.Sensemaya is played with virtuosity."Estrllita" is the best known of all Mexican song here arrenged for strings is very charming.The "Trezinho do Caipira" by Villa-Lobos is performed here to great effect by the orchestra and its percussion section.The Obertura Festiva by Halfter is performed with grace.Galindo's "Sones Macriachi" is also a piece where a mariachi gorup is immitated also to great effect by the orchestra and I think that Mr.Galindo captured the spirit of Mexico very well here.Its a great recording.Thank you Naxos... Well done Mr. Batiz

Exquisite Performance.......1999-08-03

Batiz does a magnificent job, especially with respect to Huapango. The orchestra is full and vibrant. As a brass player (trumpet), I listen especially close to this section of the orchestra. I must say that the brass met my expectations: they have great volume and lose neither control nor focus on fortissimo passages. All instruments with solo parts do an excellent job of finding a balance between projecting their sound and maintaining musicality. The trumpets in particular possess that "sizzling" or vibrating quality which characterizes the better players.

Fantastic!.......2005-11-02

This collection represents Jose Van Dam at his best. The two arias from Faust are a little low for him but he sings them with great musicality. The aria from Mireille which is a rarity is sung brilliantly. Mr. Van Dam gets up to those high notes so easily. This collection mostly contains French Repertoire which was ideal for his voice. Several of the arias are rarely performed and I think should be performed more often. The few German selections are very effective as well. I think he was one of the finest Brahms Requiem soloists of all time.

Mr. Van Dam is still singing well at age 65. I think he is one of the finest singers and musicians because everything he sings means something to him internally. That is something that defines a great artist for me. I highly recommend this collection because it is a tool for singers to learn how to pronounce French properly. The diction is so clear that you can practically write it down.

All of Orozcos CDs are truly excellent, and well worth the money. We love this one the best, but play all of them often. You can't get better for your kids!!!!!

Better than many but still not the best........2001-05-03

This is certainly a nice collection of fun Spanish children's songs, but it just didn't live up to my expectations. I had "Diez Deditos" first and loved that one so much that I was anxious to find more of the same. However, this recording is just not as good a production and seems a little flat in comparison. If you don't have "Diez Deditos" you may be perfectly happy, but you'd be missing out on something better!

Sweet and simple.......2000-10-27

Mr. Orozco's clear voice, good spanish & acoustic guitar accompaniment make for a very good introduction to the Lirica Infantil series. The body of the album is made up of mostly traditional songs from Spain, Mexico & the rest of Latin America, plus some original songs. It is hard to find as nice a selection of songs with such a good recording quality. Other collections I have heard (Arroz con leche, for example) suffer from lack of skill & experience with the Spanish language, others (Juguemos ninos? & Juguemos otra vez?) are just recordings of low quality . Another error (I think) this album avoids is the overreliance on electronic instruments or modern reinventing of traditional songs, not that there isn't a place for that kind of album, it is just that there are almost no collections which respect the traditional music and the songs heard of the past. Sadly even in Mexico, Children's song collections use generic synthetized music accompaniment or try to appeal to today's youngsters with bad rock 'n roll versions of traditional songs. Mr. Orozco keeps it simple & sweet in this album. This collection of songs is a treasure here in the United states, and there really is no reason why it should not also be treasured in Latin America.

Great collection.......2006-11-06

Living in Asia, I was introduced to Jose Jose after watching the film Sueno and seeing him perform at the end of the movie. I loved that song (but can't remember the title!) and soon after searched the Internet to find the difinitive collection of his music. This 2-volume set was just what I was looking for. The only downside? The song that he sings in Sueno isn't on it! But that's okay. (p.s. If anyone knows the song he sings in Sueno and which CD has it (besides the soundtrack), pls email me. thanks)

Complete collection of super hits of "The Prince".......2000-02-22

ENGLISH: This chronologic collection includes the greatest hits of "The Prince of Romantic Music". The songs were very well selected and they appear in order. From his first hits with RCA (from "Solo una mujer" to "De Pueblo en Pueblo") to the second discographic era with BMG Ariola (from "Gavilan o Paloma" to the date).

Includes his two classic songs: "El Triste" and "La Nave del Olvido", an spanish version of Paul Anka's "Let Me Get to Know you" (Dejame conocerte),and the hymn of love "Amar y Querer". Simply great, and the two volumes are the most complete collection of romantic music with Jose Jose.

Also, the cover is one of my favorites. It has a very ellegant design with the photo of Jose in line art with typography in silver. Basic but good enough.

SPANISH: Esta colección cronológica incluye los más grandes éxitos del "Príncipe de la Canción Romántica". Las canciones están muy bien seleccionadas y aparecen en orden. Desde sus primeros éxitos con la RCA (desde "Sólo una mujer" a "De Pueblo en Pueblo") hasta su segunda era discográfica con BMG Ariola (de "Gavilán o Paloma" a la fecha).

Incluye sus dos canciones clásicas: "El Triste" y "La nave del Olvido", una versión en español de la canción "Let Me get to Know you" de Paul Anka (Déjame Conocerte), y el himno al amor "Amar y Querer". Sencillamente grandioso, y los dos volúmenes son la más completa colección de música romántica con José José.

Además, la portada es una de mis favoritas. Tiene un diseño muy elegante con la foto de José en alto contraste y tipografía en plata. Básico pero suficientemente efectiva.

I was absolutely amazed when I heard this CD for the first time. Everyone is under the impression that he has lost his voice! These are twelve absloutely wonderful re recordings of some of his most beautiful songs. Higly recommended for anyone interested in Latin music.

A very original concept album........2003-08-02

What most of Jose Jose's fans don't know is that when his first records were released, the bolero was giving way to the contemporary pop ballad. This CD is therefore a tribute of sorts to his musical roots and consists of twelve of his hits re-recorded in a "Trio" format (with some beautiful acoustic guitar work). A very original project.

I GIVE THIS ALBUM ONE STAR BECAUSE I AM FORCED TO AND CAN'T GIVE IT A 0!! As a fan of old music I have all of the original versions of these songs on Vinyl, CD, CASSETTE, and MP3 Format. The members of LOS PANCHOS that have passed away are spinning in their graves. These songs have no heart, Jose Luis Rodriguez is a singer that I do like but here he just totally sold out because no one was buying his albums. The original feeling and soul given to these songs by the Original Los Panchos is gone and Computer Manipulated. This is no different than George Lucas CGI'ing Yoda for Star Wars I, I wouldn't buy this album if my life depended on it. Do yourself a favor, get an original compilation of LOS PANCHOS and hear for yourself the ORIGINAL UNMANIPULATED to match J.L. Rodriguez's voice versions, you'll thank me later.... JR

Viva El Puma !.......2000-07-23

These are some of the most beautiful Latin songs ever written, and with the gorgeous sound of "El Puma" Jose Luis Rodriguez and the legendary Los Panchos performing them, this CD is a treasure. El Puma's voice, so smooth and manly, is perfect for this collection. These are songs I grew up with, and in all my life have never heard them so exquisitely done. Favorites are "Perdon", "Sin un Amor" and "Toda una Vida". If you like romantic Latin music, you'll love this CD. It's a classic, and I'm thrilled that after all these years of wonderful singing, El Puma has done his absolute best recording.

Wonderfully redone romantic latin classics........1999-04-30

This record features "Jose Luis Rodriguez" (El Puma) together with "Los Panchos", who are already famous for this type of music. This CD is basically a workover of many classic boleros written earlier this century. It is absolutely wonderful stuff, these songs are just so beautiful and here they are rerecorded with El Puma's great voice and the highest quality recording equipment.

If you like latin music, this CD should be part of your collection.
