To me,Joan Manuel Serrat is the best Spanish born songwriter of his generation. That premise may bias my review.Still,I wish to reflect on the emotions his work has provoked in me,throughout my life.LUCIA being my favorite track,it has provoked deep longing yet healthy lust.PENELOPE and MEDITERRANEO have become almost tantamount to national anthems. And yes, while SEÑORA is the undiscovered antiestablishment hymn,AQUELLAS PEQUEÑAS COSAS
basks in the sun as a psychoanalytical lizard.Forgiving the great song MANUEL was left out, this a classic album by the once
ENFANT TERRIBLE of Spain.

5 out of 5 stars Among the greatest.......2002-07-28

Dear Serrat fans,
I do love Serrat's art deeply. He has been one of my favourite singers and popular composers of all my lifetime, and perhaps the best. I have enjoyed immensely his music, his poetry (not always his), his Castillian diction when singing in Spanish, his consistent choice of good material. He has invariably been a most satisfying and even emotional experience.
HOWEVER, I think it is now time that his CDs come with a fair fill up. We are still being given as few as 9 titles per CD, where the current standard is close to 20. True, there is one Serrat CD in Catalonian that contains 34 titles, and this one contains 24, but we are talking here about very exceptional circumstances.
IT IS NOW TIME for someone in charge to organize Serrat's recordings in an inclusive, more or less complete anthology, close to chronological, so that we can at last have even better value for money when buying Serrat. No longer there is any justification whatsoever for 1/2 or 2/3 empty CDs.
As far as I am concerned, I am on strike. I am no longer buying any popular music CDs with less than 18 titles, preferably over 20, whatever the artist might be, and that includes my favourite Serrat!
Consider that a single CD can easily contain up to 79 minutes of music!
Please oblige.

To buy all Serrat albums is not a waste of money, but if you can not afford to buy more than one...... THIS IS THE ONE.

This product was never sent to me. It was sent to my old address eventhough I had purchased (quite a few) things from Amazon under a new address.

2 out of 5 stars Exquisite music.......2006-01-28

(Should be 5 stars -- can't seem to edit the stars.) I was first exposed to this recording in a high school Spanish class. I was blown away. Through some difficulty, I eventually came to own the LP. My comprehension of the lyrics has faded, but my appreciation for the music has not. Serious ear candy. It's amazing stuff to these very American ears. Some of it has a "get under skin" quality that is especially pleasing. I recommend this CD to everyone, even if you don't know a lick of Spanish.

At times lyrical or up-tempo but always refreshing to hear. Serrat has a great voice.

5 out of 5 stars Dusty Towns & Immortal Love........2005-08-04

Joan Manuel Serrat (1943) is one of the greatest Spanish folk singer. He is much more than that! He is a Poet, Musician & Troubadour, permanently touring around Spain & Latin America.
Fortunately, for me, Argentina is one of his favorite destinations, allowing me to see him "live" more than once.

Serrat's first compositions were done in Catalan as he was engaged in artistic-resistant movement opposing Franco's regimen & politics that include forbidding regional languages.
His first success sang in Spanish was the single "Poema de Amor" (1968) closely followed by "Tu Nombre me Sabe a Hierba" (1969). After those two hits Spanish speaking musical market was in turmoil demanding more from Joan Manuel.
"Mediterraneo" (1971) and "Miguel Hernandez" (1972) were two remarkable LPs springing from his heart and his political affiliation.
After those years he will deliver a continuous flow of LPs and CDs. We may mention "Cada Loco con su Tema" (1983), "Utopia" (1992), "Cansiones" (2000) and "Serrat Sinfónico" (2003) as a representative simple of his works.

The compositions contained in this CD emerge directly from Serrat's soul giving the audience a magic tour around Mediterranean landscapes, women, flavors, nostalgia and culture.
The first composition, the one that gives title to the whole CD, is a romantic overview of the region and finally the poet ask his friends that when he passes away they should bury him in a hill's side facing the sea.
"La Mujer Que Yo Quiero" is a brave love song describing his ideal love.
"Pueblo Blanco" is the song I love best. It describes a dusty lost town, being depopulated little by little; its melody envelopes the audience with melancholic tonalities.
"Que Va a Ser de Ti Lejos de Casa" contains a very similar subject to Beatles' "She's Leaving Home" with a wonderful musical composition.
The rest of the compositions are outstanding!

This is a CD to be treasured by anyone in love with folk music and soloist admirers.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is special.......2006-05-09

I absolutely love this CD. I first heard the music when a friend of mine played the (then) album just after we both returned from Spain on foreign study in the '70s. The words of Machado said so much to me about what I had seen and learned about Spain, and the music by Serrat couldn't be more appropriate. I managed to buy the album a number of years later on a trip to Mexico and then bought the CD many more years later when it was available from Amazon. In my mind, it's timeless. If you have a sense of the history of Spain and the Spanish people, you will love this music. My personal favorite is La Saeta.

5 out of 5 stars cd quality.......2003-11-20

I was heartbroken to find that the quality of the recording is this bad... lots of hissing and noise that could be easily removed with modern technology. It just goes to show that music companies like BMG prefer to put resources on junk than to pay attention to what people really buy, because even with the bad quality, Serrat's work shines. Joan Manuel, if you are reading this, get rid of BMG, go somewhere else. You are too good for that mafia.

5 out of 5 stars Excelente.......2000-12-23

5 out of 5 stars Poetry and music.......2000-08-25

Antonio Machado was one of Spain's 20th century's best poets. Raised in Andalucía, his poetry has become national common culture and this album greatly contributed to that. Serrat, himself a notable poet as well as the most important songwriter of Spain for the past thirty five years, wrote excellent music for a handful of Machado's poems. The result is incredibly beautiful, with an match between tempo and meaning so outstanding that for the not-so-well-read it might be difficult to digest the news that it was not Serrat's lyrics...

5 out of 5 stars Poetas necesarios.......2000-07-24

5 out of 5 stars Prosa social descriptiva excelente.......2003-10-19

5 out of 5 stars Por favor... Serrat no sólo es de 1981 para atrás..........2001-05-23

Excelente disco ! :)

5 out of 5 stars En Transito by Joan Manuel Serrat.......2000-11-04

I think this is one of the best disks ever recorded by this great singer from Catalunia. This is a great collection of songs where Serrat appears tender, poetic, romantic, inspiring and, at times, critic of unwritten social behavioral rules. I strongly recommend purchasing this CD to anybody that has ever heard and liked a song by Joan Manuel Serrat.

5 out of 5 stars El mejor momento de Serrat.......2000-10-09

Joan Manuel Serrat (1943) is one of the greatest Spanish folk singer. He is much more than that! He is a Poet, Musician & Troubadour, permanently touring around Spain & Latin America.
Serrat's first compositions were done & sang in Catalan as he was engaged in artistic-resistant movement opposing Franco's regimen & politics that include forbidding regional languages.

Miguel Hernandez (1910-1942) was a goat herder since boyhood till he was fifteen years old. He was an autodidact and fall in love with poetry. His first compositions were simple and pastoral. From there on he evolved to be a cultured "neogongorist" mastering language and metrics.
At Madrid he entered in touch with poets like Neruda, Alberti and Cernuda evolving his political stands and poetic style.
As Civil War erupted in Spain he fervently defended the Republic stressing himself in different posts and fronts.
When republicans were defeated by Franco's troops he was imprisoned and died in 1942 from tuberculosis without regaining freedom.

The compositions contained in this CD are Serrat's musicalization for Hernandez poetry. A rich mixture of musical sounds and significant texts flows from this excellent CD.
"Para la Libertad" is a dramatic composition written when Miguel was hospitalized during the war. It reflects the feeling of a freedom-fighter giving his own body bit by bit for his cause and knowing that those lost parts will fructify.
"Elegia" is composition mourning for the sudden death of his beloved friend Ramon Sije; Serrat's music and voice dress up the verses with deep melancholic tones.
"Umbrio por la Pena" transmits the deep pain of the poet in his last days before passing away.
"Nanas de la Cebolla" dedicated to his only child growing up with famine and deprived of his presence. Even if you do not understand the words, Serrat's artistry will convey the profound emotion contained in this heartbreaking poem.
The rest of the tracks in this CD are outstanding! Do not miss this gem!

5 out of 5 stars COMO EL BUEN VINO.......2004-04-21

I love this album. I am glad I found a CD. Mi vinyl copy is totally gone from so much playing. I believe Serrat interprets the Miguel Hernandez's poetry in such exquisite and touching way. My favorite is Nana de las Cebollas. Makes me appreciate the freedom and all that I have.

5 out of 5 stars Miguel Hernandez.......2001-09-25

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and haunting, even if have no Spanish!.......2001-09-17

I am delighted to find this album finally available on CD. I have loved this music for 25 years, but had only a much loved, scratched LP (that's vinyl, for young people) until now. The album is a tribute in music to the poetry of Miguel Hernandez. I personally speak no Spanish and understand perhaps 20 words out of context. However, I first heard this album when a college roommate, originally from Cuba, played it in our dormitory room in 1973. I was captivated by the music, and when I asked her to translate some of the lyrics, I was enchanted, especially by "Menos Tu Vientre" and hauntingly by "Umbrio por la Pena." I borrowed her LP and played it again and again--and finally Silvia said, "Here, keep it--you love it even more than I do!" I have never tired of it, and soon sought out other works by Serrat. But nothing compares, in my mind, with "Miguel Hernandez." Listening to this CD has also helped me to learn and appreciate the rhythms and music of the Spanish language itself. I hope others will discover Serrat, and especially this album. I'm sure it will affect others as it has done for me. Especially in this week of September 11, 2001, in the sad and shocked wake of the World Trade Center and Pentagon disasters, I have found "Umbrio por la Pena," as only Serrat could express it, a great comfort. --Ann Weber, Professor of Psychology, UNC at Asheville, Asheville NC

"What an inspired project! A host of Cuba's top musicians create their own Latin jazz, salsa, trova, timba, and son versions of the groundbreaking songs of Joan Manuel Serrat, the Catalan singer-songwriter." -- Songlines [*****]

"Catalan poet and singer Joan Manuel Serrat is the kind of pan-Latin cultural giant who can make the Anglo-American global mainstream feel a touch provincial. You and I may never have heard of him, but the mere mention of the Franco-defying veteran balladeer's name was enough to bring out the cream of the Cuban crop for this gorgeous tribute album." -- The Daily Telegraph

Some of the most legendary Cuban artists and Buena Vista stars bring you a fabulous 2-CD set featuring new versions of songs by Joan Manuel Serrat, the most famous Spanish songwriter! Nominated for a 2005 Latin Grammy for Best Contemporary Tropical Album. Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars el imprescindible.......2005-03-18

5 out of 5 stars SERRAT EN DIRECTO.......2004-09-22

5 out of 5 stars Serrat, the poet, live.......2004-07-18

Joan Manuel Serrat is more than just a singer and songwriter from Catalunia, Spain. He's one of the most brilliant voices and composers in the spectrum of the Spanish language. Since his early days, he's been creating some of the most beautiful pieces, touching on political and social matters every bit as much as love and relationships.

With 'Serrat En Directo' (something like 'Serrat Live') you are presented with a comprehensive sample of his best works up to 1984 (when it was originally released). It is a must reference for longtime Serrat followers and newcomers into his music alike, since it provides a peek into a very wide range of his early works and, for the "hardcore" fans, it also offers new arrangements of some of his classic songs, such as "Cantares" (the first Serrat song that I ever heard), "De vez en cuando la vida" and "Cada Loco Con Su Tema", which had come out not too long before this live album.

If you like what you hear here, I highly recommend his most recent albums, 'Cansiones' (with an 's', yes) and 'Sombras de la China' and beyond his own work, Silvio Rodriguez and Pablo Milanes.

4 out of 5 stars Un artista en directo.......2001-08-23

      Imprescindible.
