The word "fabulous" seems vulgar when applied to the Spanish diva whose delicately shaded voice encompassed music from the middle ages to the present. This four-disc compilation emphasizes her song repertoire, to which she brought warmth, intelligence, linguistic integrity and irresistible sincerity. Her dignity makes listeners want to come to her, and she rewards them with an intimate, personal experience, especially in this small-scale repertoire by Ravel, Debussy, Duparc, Fauré, lots of Spanish composers and German masters such as Schubert and Brahms. --David Patrick Stearns

5 out of 5 stars Awesome musicality.......2006-07-26

This 4-CD set is a tribute to the concert career of the great Victoria de Los Angeles. The first 3 CDs show her totally at home in the art song of France and of her native Spain. In the French art songs, her silvery, creamy tone, her legendary legato and her perfect French diction make for wonderful and unforgettable performances. These include a sensual Scheherazade, magnificient singing in the Duparc songs and a phenomenal Poeme de L'amour et de la mer of Chausson (try to keep your eyes dry by the end of La mort de l'amour). In the Chausson, while de Los Angeles does not opt for the intensely Wagnerian approach, her sensitive singing more than does justice to the poetry and the feelings of the character. The Spanish songs showcase de Los Angeles at her most natural, flamboyant and attractive singing. The tunes are catchy, full of bouncy rhythms and De Los Angeles's fabulous voice never ceases to amaze. The 4th CD shows the wonderful chemistry between de Los angeles and the great Gerald Moore. While she does not erase memories of Fischer-Dieskau and Schwarzkopf in the Schubert selections, the Brahms songs are excellent and her Faure songs here are earth shaking in their elegance and refinement. The Italian and the famous Handel aria helps to prove De Los Angeles's reputation as an excellent bel canto singer. Her duets with Fischer-Dieskau are absolutely memorable and gorgeous.
The set comes with booklet including full words plus translations, helpful notes on De Los Angeles's concert career and a dozen of beautiful and rare black and white photos. Victoria de Los Angeles's concert career was as prolific as her legendary operatic performances and continued well after her retirement from the operatic stage. This introspective and almost encycopledic release is a real treat and is absolutely recommended. I totally agree with the editor's review who states that the word "fabulous" fails in every respect to fully capture the artistry of the Spanish soprano. Victoria de Los Angeles is definitely one of the most wonderful lyric sopranos of the 20th century and is one of the most heavenly artists to have ever graced the concert scene. A must-have for any collection.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous? Yes!!!.......1999-09-13

The album is a marvelous sampling of this great singer's artistry. Her performances of the French and Spanish composers are something special. The De Falla "Seven Popular Folksongs" are powerful, passionate; the last song, "Jota," raised the hair on the back of my neck.

I was delighted to see Faure's "Claire de lune" on the album, and equally delighted with De Los Angeles' elegant rendition of this work. The only recording of the song I've liked better is from an LP featuring Frederika Von Stade.

As an added bonus, several duets with the great baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau are featured on Disk #4. These include some charming settings of Irish songs by Beethoven, and a gorgeous arrangement of "Let Us Wander" by Henry Purcell. I remember hearing these duets years ago on an LP recording, and it was a pleasure to hear them again.

Uruguayan pianist Polly Ferman has made a specialty of the piano music of South America. Her previous CDs of music by Ernesto Nazareth and Ernesto Lecuona were thoroughly delightful. Now she offers a wide-ranging program of mostly brief, dance-based piano music in forms from South America, although written by composers from many countries. You have to follow the track listing inside the booklet (the listing on the tray card is virtually illegible) to find out whether the delightful piece you are hearing was written by Gottschalk, Chabrier, Stravinsky, Weill, or Ginastera. But whatever the music, it's all entertaining and sometimes (as with Piazzolla) considerably more than that. Ferman's playing encompasses all these styles convincingly, and the recording conveys the piano sound with considerable realism. Romeo needs to clean up its presentation; aside from the badly-designed tray card, the pianist's biography comes right in the middle of the program notes on the music. But for its contents, this is the most entertaining piano collection since Gloria Cheng's Piano Dance and it's highly recommended. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars From Africa to Cuba and from Cuba to Argentina.......2006-03-16

I don't mean to be over zealous with my Cuban/Spanish Moorish heritage, and I agree with my Argentinean counterpart soldiers who are here in Eastern Europe with me serving as peace keepers with NATO, that certain things have to be clear and made public, so that people can be educated. This is the purpose of this review. This CD is an excellent recording of the different styles of Habaneras, Milongas and Tangos, they all are related. The roots are from Africa/Cuba brought to Argentina by Cuban sailors. The great German writer Rodolfo A. Windhausen states in one of his research report on the roots of the Tangos the following: "I learned about the Cuban roots of Tango. The Habanera rhythm was brought to Argentina by Cuban sailors in the nineteenth century. In fact, there is still one Milonga in Havana, once a week, for a small Tango community". If you want to hear Habaneras check the CD " Habaneras By Maria Teresa Vera" and Habaneras by Marco Rizo on both of these CD's you will hear the roots of Tangos played by one of the most respected Cuban guitar player(Maria Teresa Vera) of all times. I first heard of the Habaneras when I was young. My father would play them on his guitar while my mother would join him in singing the songs. My favorite was "twenty years" which is a classic! This is a good starting point for those who enjoy the Tangos, Milongas and the Habaneras interpreted here by this great pianist from Uruguay. Che, buy it, you will not regret it! It's part of your rich Argentinean culture.

5 out of 5 stars Habaneras, Milongas, Tangos.......2001-11-04

This is delightful! The pianist is superb in her interpretation of the pieces. The music takes you away to another world.

5 out of 5 stars Carole Farley and John Constable record Lecuona. Sensational........2006-08-13

Sensational rendition of these songs by Cuba's own Gerswhin, Ernesto Lecuona. Carole Farley and pianist John Constable have done a remarkable service in making these lovely ballads known to a world-wide audience. Recorded by the high-quality,
Stokholm-based classical label BIS with their usual great sound and superior balance, Carole Farley demonstrates once again that she is one of the top singers of the day. Her previous CD, with the songs by American composer William Bolcom (on Naxos), got her a Grammy nomination this year in the difficult and crowded category of "Best Vocal Album of the Year", alongside four of the top singers of the days, such as Cecilia Bartoli. Her previous album of Ned Rorem songs, with the composer at the piano, was a sensation. For an opera singer of such powerful voice to be able to do these simple, rather "popular" songs by Lecuona, which obviously reauires a very different vocal approach is a great accomplishment. She demonstrates full understanding of the character, style and language of these elusive songe. This is a very seductive recording; you'll want to hear it again and again, as I have. Most rewarding and revealing. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Sensational new Lecuona recording by Farley and Constable.......2006-08-13

This is a sentational recording in every sense. The recorded sound is spectacular and these two great artists make these simple songs into jewells. Carole Farley obviously loves these songs and she communicates the texts with conviction. Her beautiful soprano voice adapts perfectly to these popular songs, something few opera singers are able to accomplish.
Mr. Constable provides the most extraordinary piano accompaniment, improvising all along, as Lecuona himself used to do. Bravo to all involved in this spectacular rendition.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC NEW LECUONA CD.......2006-07-26

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary recording by Carole Farley & John Constable.......2006-07-25

This is a truly extraordinary recording in every sense. These two great artists can do anything they set their minds to do, from barroque music to the most advanced experimental music.
John Constable made a name for himself as the brilliant harpsichordist in many barroque and Mozart opera recordings,
and at the same time he apperas as the versatile pianist in
very successful avant-garde recordings by the London Sinfonietta. Carole Farley, who did the first MET production of Alban Berg's "Lulu", as well as the first UK and Canadian productions, made very beautiful recordings of Tchaikovsky opera arias, Grieg lieder, several albums of Kurt Weill works including several world premieres, at least two CD's of Prokofiev's lieder, quite a few French lieder CD's and countless others. Among her new triumphs is the DVD of operas by Poulenc and Menotti (GRAMOPHONE Magazine's DVD of the Month in August 2006), and the incredible Naxos CD of songs by William Bolcom, with the composer at the piano, which I believe received a GRAMMY nomination in 2006 for "Best Vocal Album of the Year". I have also enjoyed enormously her CD of Ned Rorem Songs, accompanied by the composer at the piano.
But the jewell in her discography is the BIS CD of Ernesto Lecuona Love Songs, with Constable as the brilliant pianist.
Her Spanish is perfect. These songs, many of them unknown until
now, sound fresh and sparkling. The performances are perfect gems, and Lecuona followers in particular will be delighted with the interpretation. Ms. Farley's beautiful voice
is made in heaven for these sultry songs, which are on a par with those of George Gershwin. Carole Farley's and John Constable's recording has become a legend in Cuba and other places. Let us hope BIS and these great artists are planning a second volume. After all, Lecuona composed hundreds of songs, and there still are many discoveries to be made.

1 out of 5 stars Pathetic... and this is stated with great regret.......2006-06-29

Thank heavens Gilberto (see "Horrible") doesn't have a tin ear. This is the most deceptively presented collection of unidiomatic interpretations imaginable. I have a profound respect for the works of Lecuona, be they vocal, orchestral or piano solo, and am proud to own 32 Lecuona CD's, many bought in Havana over six trips to that city. Madame Farley captures none of the magic that Esther Borja, Alina Sanchez, Rosita Fornes, Rita Montaner or Maria de los Angeles Santana display in their priceless renditions of Lecuona's treasures. Her Spanish pronunciation is off-base and I have the impression that she's sight-reading the music. She hits the notes square on, and yes, she does have a beautiful voice, but there's no feeling in between the notes. Madame Farley doesn't caress the music with her heart and soul. If she has been to Cuba, I'll be very surprised indeed, as I have no sense she's ever felt the gentle evening breeze flow over her shoulders on a Havana rooftop patio or a Miramar garden under a noche azul sky.

People who don't know Lecuona and rave about this initial purchase remind me of those who bought the soundtrack to the 1981 cult favorite "Diva" so they could hear Wilhelmenia Fernandez sing "Ebben ne andro lontana" and claim they were all of a sudden "into opera"... and never bought another operatic album again. You're having the wool pulled over your ears, folks. Stay away. Go on-line and order any vocal recordings with the above-mentioned singers (especially Borja's "Canta a dos, tres y cuatro voces") to hear Lecuona sung with more than just the sweet sounds of a melody muffin. I admire Madame Farley for her excellence in opera, but without some very intense language study and immersion in Cuban culture, she ought never to attempt Lecuona again. Similarly, Bing Crosby was one of the great singers of the 20th century when he stuck to his repertoire, but his recording of Lecuona's "Siboney" has to be one of the least Latina of incarnations of all time... "See Bone Nay-ay-ay".

I have the honour of knowing Esther Borja, who was Lecuona's singer of choice. He accompanied her countless times in the 30's and 40's. I was privileged to join friends in celebrating two consecutive birthdays of hers in recent years. Believe me, at 91 she could HUM the music better than Madame Farley sings it. I brought the Farley CD to Havana last March to play it for several musician friends and the common thread in their reactions was, "This is not what Lecuona would have wanted." Cubans are, for the most part, very polite.

It pains me not to be able to savor this recording as I think one cannot possibly have too much Lecuona. I really wanted to own "CD number 33". I was eager to hear what the lovely Farley voice would do with the music. Sadly, I'm still stuck at 32.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite voice - exquisite interpretations.......2003-03-31

Della Jones is a wonder! What a joyful discovery is this collection of songs! Ms. Jones has a wonderful, expressive, luminous voice and her interpretations are full of grace, wit, personality and attention to detail. The songs are gems of beauty and personality. As you can see, I simply cannot say enough about the wonderful Ms. Jones and her talented, sensitive accompanist -I'm sorry - I don't have the CD with me right now, and the name of the wonderful pianist escapes me. Buy this CD. You will be thrilled.

Album Description

This recording featuring Jose Serebrier conducting the SWR Sinfonieorchester is a virtual overview of 20th century Spanish Classical Music. The focus of the recording is a stirring rendition of Isaac Albeniz's IBERIA transcribed for orchestra. The renown soprano CAROLE FARLEY is featured in Xavier Montsalvatge's CINCO CANCIONES NEGRAS. Manuel deFalla is represented by two works: "The Interlude and Dance No.1" from LA VIDA BREVE and perhaps his most well known work "The Ritual Fire Dance" from EL AMOR BRUJO. The most recent composition is ARBOL DE ARCANGELES by Tomas Marco and though not of Spanish blood but certainly of Spanish instinct and style is the most famous BOLERO by Maurice Ravel.

5 out of 5 stars Real Spanish Flair.......2006-11-03

Several weeks ago I was listing to the radio and Iberia was playing. I did not know who was conducting but I could not tear myself away. It was unlike any Iberia I had ever heard. The performance oozed passion, sensuality, and color. I could not wait until it was over when the announcer would name the conductor. When he said Jose Serebrier I smiled to myself. Who else could conduct such a technicolor performance other than a Stokowski protege. I immediately ordered the disc from Amazon and was not disappointed. All the works on the disc are played with the same passion and flair, though for me the Iberia and Ritual Fire Dance with Carole Farley are the standouts. Serebrier has opened my ears anew to these pieces and I am grateful. Give yourself a treat - buy this disc.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting and Lovely.......2005-08-07

I've had this record for years and listened to it hundreds of times. I never get tired of it. Victoria De Los Angeles has it all. She is moving, mysterious and melencholic and then exciting and brassy. "Songs my Mother Taught Me" can move me almost to tears.
