The word "fabulous" seems vulgar when applied to the Spanish diva whose delicately shaded voice encompassed music from the middle ages to the present. This four-disc compilation emphasizes her song repertoire, to which she brought warmth, intelligence, linguistic integrity and irresistible sincerity. Her dignity makes listeners want to come to her, and she rewards them with an intimate, personal experience, especially in this small-scale repertoire by Ravel, Debussy, Duparc, Fauré, lots of Spanish composers and German masters such as Schubert and Brahms. --David Patrick StearnsCustomer Reviews:
Awesome musicality.......2006-07-26
The set comes with booklet including full words plus translations, helpful notes on De Los Angeles's concert career and a dozen of beautiful and rare black and white photos. Victoria de Los Angeles's concert career was as prolific as her legendary operatic performances and continued well after her retirement from the operatic stage. This introspective and almost encycopledic release is a real treat and is absolutely recommended. I totally agree with the editor's review who states that the word "fabulous" fails in every respect to fully capture the artistry of the Spanish soprano. Victoria de Los Angeles is definitely one of the most wonderful lyric sopranos of the 20th century and is one of the most heavenly artists to have ever graced the concert scene. A must-have for any collection.
Fabulous? Yes!!!.......1999-09-13
I was delighted to see Faure's "Claire de lune" on the album, and equally delighted with De Los Angeles' elegant rendition of this work. The only recording of the song I've liked better is from an LP featuring Frederika Von Stade.
As an added bonus, several duets with the great baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau are featured on Disk #4. These include some charming settings of Irish songs by Beethoven, and a gorgeous arrangement of "Let Us Wander" by Henry Purcell. I remember hearing these duets years ago on an LP recording, and it was a pleasure to hear them again.

Uruguayan pianist Polly Ferman has made a specialty of the piano music of South America. Her previous CDs of music by Ernesto Nazareth and Ernesto Lecuona were thoroughly delightful. Now she offers a wide-ranging program of mostly brief, dance-based piano music in forms from South America, although written by composers from many countries. You have to follow the track listing inside the booklet (the listing on the tray card is virtually illegible) to find out whether the delightful piece you are hearing was written by Gottschalk, Chabrier, Stravinsky, Weill, or Ginastera. But whatever the music, it's all entertaining and sometimes (as with Piazzolla) considerably more than that. Ferman's playing encompasses all these styles convincingly, and the recording conveys the piano sound with considerable realism. Romeo needs to clean up its presentation; aside from the badly-designed tray card, the pianist's biography comes right in the middle of the program notes on the music. But for its contents, this is the most entertaining piano collection since Gloria Cheng's Piano Dance and it's highly recommended. --Leslie GerberCustomer Reviews:

Carole Farley and John Constable record Lecuona. Sensational........2006-08-13
Stokholm-based classical label BIS with their usual great sound and superior balance, Carole Farley demonstrates once again that she is one of the top singers of the day. Her previous CD, with the songs by American composer William Bolcom (on Naxos), got her a Grammy nomination this year in the difficult and crowded category of "Best Vocal Album of the Year", alongside four of the top singers of the days, such as Cecilia Bartoli. Her previous album of Ned Rorem songs, with the composer at the piano, was a sensation. For an opera singer of such powerful voice to be able to do these simple, rather "popular" songs by Lecuona, which obviously reauires a very different vocal approach is a great accomplishment. She demonstrates full understanding of the character, style and language of these elusive songe. This is a very seductive recording; you'll want to hear it again and again, as I have. Most rewarding and revealing. Recommended.

Sensational new Lecuona recording by Farley and Constable.......2006-08-13
Mr. Constable provides the most extraordinary piano accompaniment, improvising all along, as Lecuona himself used to do. Bravo to all involved in this spectacular rendition.

Extraordinary recording by Carole Farley & John Constable.......2006-07-25
John Constable made a name for himself as the brilliant harpsichordist in many barroque and Mozart opera recordings,
and at the same time he apperas as the versatile pianist in
very successful avant-garde recordings by the London Sinfonietta. Carole Farley, who did the first MET production of Alban Berg's "Lulu", as well as the first UK and Canadian productions, made very beautiful recordings of Tchaikovsky opera arias, Grieg lieder, several albums of Kurt Weill works including several world premieres, at least two CD's of Prokofiev's lieder, quite a few French lieder CD's and countless others. Among her new triumphs is the DVD of operas by Poulenc and Menotti (GRAMOPHONE Magazine's DVD of the Month in August 2006), and the incredible Naxos CD of songs by William Bolcom, with the composer at the piano, which I believe received a GRAMMY nomination in 2006 for "Best Vocal Album of the Year". I have also enjoyed enormously her CD of Ned Rorem Songs, accompanied by the composer at the piano.
But the jewell in her discography is the BIS CD of Ernesto Lecuona Love Songs, with Constable as the brilliant pianist.
Her Spanish is perfect. These songs, many of them unknown until
now, sound fresh and sparkling. The performances are perfect gems, and Lecuona followers in particular will be delighted with the interpretation. Ms. Farley's beautiful voice
is made in heaven for these sultry songs, which are on a par with those of George Gershwin. Carole Farley's and John Constable's recording has become a legend in Cuba and other places. Let us hope BIS and these great artists are planning a second volume. After all, Lecuona composed hundreds of songs, and there still are many discoveries to be made.

Pathetic... and this is stated with great regret.......2006-06-29
People who don't know Lecuona and rave about this initial purchase remind me of those who bought the soundtrack to the 1981 cult favorite "Diva" so they could hear Wilhelmenia Fernandez sing "Ebben ne andro lontana" and claim they were all of a sudden "into opera"... and never bought another operatic album again. You're having the wool pulled over your ears, folks. Stay away. Go on-line and order any vocal recordings with the above-mentioned singers (especially Borja's "Canta a dos, tres y cuatro voces") to hear Lecuona sung with more than just the sweet sounds of a melody muffin. I admire Madame Farley for her excellence in opera, but without some very intense language study and immersion in Cuban culture, she ought never to attempt Lecuona again. Similarly, Bing Crosby was one of the great singers of the 20th century when he stuck to his repertoire, but his recording of Lecuona's "Siboney" has to be one of the least Latina of incarnations of all time... "See Bone Nay-ay-ay".
I have the honour of knowing Esther Borja, who was Lecuona's singer of choice. He accompanied her countless times in the 30's and 40's. I was privileged to join friends in celebrating two consecutive birthdays of hers in recent years. Believe me, at 91 she could HUM the music better than Madame Farley sings it. I brought the Farley CD to Havana last March to play it for several musician friends and the common thread in their reactions was, "This is not what Lecuona would have wanted." Cubans are, for the most part, very polite.
It pains me not to be able to savor this recording as I think one cannot possibly have too much Lecuona. I really wanted to own "CD number 33". I was eager to hear what the lovely Farley voice would do with the music. Sadly, I'm still stuck at 32.

Album Description
This recording featuring Jose Serebrier conducting the SWR Sinfonieorchester is a virtual overview of 20th century Spanish Classical Music. The focus of the recording is a stirring rendition of Isaac Albeniz's IBERIA transcribed for orchestra. The renown soprano CAROLE FARLEY is featured in Xavier Montsalvatge's CINCO CANCIONES NEGRAS. Manuel deFalla is represented by two works: "The Interlude and Dance No.1" from LA VIDA BREVE and perhaps his most well known work "The Ritual Fire Dance" from EL AMOR BRUJO. The most recent composition is ARBOL DE ARCANGELES by Tomas Marco and though not of Spanish blood but certainly of Spanish instinct and style is the most famous BOLERO by Maurice Ravel.Customer Reviews:
