Something happened to Spoon between records five and six--they got big. It's not as if these unprepossessing Texans were unpopular before, but after Gimme Fiction, their music was everywhere. There was Britt Daniel, who has since moved to Oregon, singing karaoke on cult favorite Veronica Mars, there was his soundtrack for deadpan Will Ferrell vehicle Stranger Than Fiction, and then there were the countless times their tunes, especially 2002's "The Way We Get By," appeared in other movies and TV shows. The irony is that they hadn't signed to a major label (they tried that in the 1990s; it didn't take). Nor had they given their sound a major overhaul. Maybe it was a change of publicist, or maybe the times had simply caught up with these "faux punks/gentlemen dudes." In any case, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is the mark of men confident enough to give their album one of the world's goofiest titles (at least it's an improvement over Queen's "Radio Ga Ga"). If Gimme Fiction was a transitional work, record number six moves even further away from the angularity of Wire and other early influences. "The Ghost of You Lingers," for instance, is downright dreamy, while "You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb" is brass-bedecked power-pop (with chimes!). Open-minded listeners will surely find this Beatlesque song cycle irresistible. Fans of the Spoon's darker, more dramatic material might want to check their expectations at the door. They'll be glad they did. --Kathleen C. FennessyAlbum Description
This record starts with "Don't Make Me A Target", a song that builds on Spoon's familiar minimal rhythmic piano/guitar vamp popularized on earlier hits like "Small Stakes" or "The Way We Get By". The album quickly moves into uncharted territory with the atmospheric "The Ghost Of You Lingers" and moves through several different stylistic changes from the explosive "You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb" to the wall-of-sound horns of radio single "The Underdog". Their most heartfelt batch of songs since 2001's "Girls Can Tell".Customer Reviews:
Well executed enjoyable album 4.25.......2007-07-31
In many ways this album is even more minimalist than their previous albums, but it is not lacking in hooks (unlike the last album). This album is lean, with no filler tracks- although there are songs that may not appeal to everyone. Many of the songs are pretty much Vocals, Drums, and Bass, with guitar often taking a back seat. If you miss 'Series of Sneaks' you may be disappointed in this.
"Don't make me a Target" starts the album out with a guitar based song with what appears to be statements to/about our executive branch. Politics are not typical of Spoon, but it works here, and although the song is very repetitive, it seems intentional and fitting.
"The Ghost of you lingers" is an oddball track that tries to create a mood and does so successfully. Not everyone will like the track, but its a grower and is good for certain moods.
"You got Yr Cherry Bomb" is a very good track that could fit on almost any Spoon album. Very upbeat sounding rock song about an ending relationship.
"Rhthm & Soul" is alright, but is a weaker track missing a strong hook.
"Eddie's Raga" is a pretty good and catchy song with lyrics that don't seem to be about anything profound. But it has a funny line 'And it'd been so long since I'd been suitably high... So we did an Airborne, settled in for the night.'
"The Underdog" is one of the 'singles' on the album. The music could be from a Belle and Sebastian song - with the simple acoustic guitar and horns, but is executed Spoon-style. The song is very good, and is another political statement. It seems directed at the Executive Branch as well- stating that if the people in power don't listen to the people (and points out that they don't and arent interested) - they will fail. I wasn't impressed at first, but it is a very good track.
"My Little Japanese Cigarette Case" stands out from the rest of this album... for its melody and repetitiveness. Pretty good track about cocaine use.
"Finer Feelings" might be the catchiest song on the album - with a great hook and hand claps (I'm a sucker for hand claps). I'm not sure exactly what its about, but appears to be an anology between creating/finding music and finding love?
"Black like me" is the ballad - very good song - the most emotional and sentimental. But is the only track that I think might be better if it didn't sound so sparce. Maybe I'm wrong there, but a very good choice of closing track.
If you liked the last 2 spoon albums you should like this as well. I still prefer "Series of Sneaks" or "Love ways," but this album is pretty good overall. I'm certainly looking forward to their next album.
The ghost of you lingers.......2007-07-29
That's because "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga" (a little dada homage) is Spoon trying out some new musical stypes. Their latest album is crammed crammed with more uptempo, energetic melodies, played on the bones of the band's tightly-wound, grimy rock'n'roll and darkly elusive lyrics. It's not a masterpiece, but it deserves a listen.
It kicks off with the tight, grimy riffs and thumping piano, with Britt Daniel murmuring, "Here come the man from the stars/we don't know why he go so far/and keep on marching along/beating his drum." It has a political vibe, without being too blatant about it ("When you reach back in his mind/feels like he's breaking the law...").
Okay. Now the experimentation begins, with percussive piano and Daniels' murmuring, echoing voice, like a ghost stuck inside a piano. And it's followed by the lush horn-and-piano rocker "You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb," which seems to be straddling the line between "fun and catchy" and "raw."
From there, they do some distinctly different spins on their usual raw rock'n'roll, which usually turn out pretty catchy -- tightly-wound guitar pop splashed with horns, rough-edged ballads, blazing dancey rock tunes, the grimy funky "Eddie's Ragga," a rattling acoustic rocker, and some raw powerpop flavoured with Hammond.
To be honest, the news that Spoon was trying out a "new" sound was enough to make me hop around in a panic. Well, I shouldn't have done that. While "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga" is not a rock masterpiece on the level of "Gimme Fiction," the Austin band does an excellent job of dressing up their trademark sound with some new flourishes.
At heart, not much has actually changed -- Daniel provides the music with tight, grimy, sinewy guitar riffs, which form the core of almost every song, and some subtle, solid bass and wonderfully sharp drums. They form intense, complex melodies that grow stronger and more complex as each song proceeds.
But the music is bouncier and more colourful. The spare rock tunes are flavoured with Spanish guitar, shimmering Hammond organ, distorted voices, harp, haunting synth and horns, but without drowning anything out. And Eric Harvey drapes a few of the songs in haunting, strong piano melodies -- particularly when he plays it like percussion.
Daniel's voice is rough and a bit scratchy, but it fits in with his guitar playing. And it's surprising that he's able to sound so peppy, considering that the songs hint at political strife, drug use, loneliness and heartache, and a girlfriend compared to a cherry bomb. Always hinted, never obvious ("The ghost of you lingers/Put on a clinic till we hit the wall... I had a nightmare nothing could be put back together").
Spoon take their sinewy rock'n'roll, and dress it up in colourful, rich clothing -- it's very different and more adventurous, but "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga" will grow on you.
SPOON RETURN WITH SOME NON FICTION FUN (3.7 stars).......2007-07-27
Over the years, Spoon have grown both in writing ability and commercial success (Jaguar commercial anyone), yet with Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (I'm not typing that again Mr. Daniels), they may have successfully shed any of those pesky "indie" labels, they had. This is partly is due to the band's ability to put out thier own brand of music in their own way, and partly due to their overall talent. The new record highlights this talent and makes the most band's incredible, and eclectic skill set. This is especially true when it comes to the anti-pop songwriting dynamic, something they do very well.
Songs start and stop through Ga effortlessly, yet, again, there isn't much flow from one track to the next. Each song definitely stands alone on their individual merit and direction. The album's production and mix are clean, yet not overdone, leading to a sound that sometimes feels like a night with Brett Daniels in his studio. There is a weird intimate jamming aspect to some of the songs (Don't Make Me A Target, Finer Feelings), but its all delivered in a quick manner. Nothing to get hung about.
There are a few potential big singles on Ga, but I don't think anything is showing up in a car commercial this time out. Even though the label of "grower" could be applied here, you can quickly find something on Ga to get excited about. Spoon doesn't shy away from a radio friendly, or sing-a-long friendly tune on Ga. You Got Your Cherry Bomb is about as straight-up hooky as a Spoon song can get, and between that and the bouncy nature of Underdog, the label heads were very pleased I'm sure. But it's the less obvious songs that are the real winners here. The Ghost of You Lingers is what I'm calling the indie version of chopsticks, and somehow, the insistent piano key pounding and droning pace, work like a charm. Don't Make Me a Target would have sounded right at home on Moonlight or Fiction, and it keeps things basic without losing any groovy-ness. Other highlights for me include: Cigarette Case, Ragga, and Don't You Evah, all of which are just stellar tracks that could stand out on any Spoon album, cohesive or not. This rings true for the band on much of this record, they keep things no-frills and take it one track at a time, without alienating their audience or a good album in the process.
Surprisingly Similar to the Best of Gimme Fiction.......2007-07-25
Apparently it payed off. Mr. Daniel's eerily simple vocals are still one of the most important features in the music. With simple single note guitar riffs mixed into quick keyboard chord play, all of the tunes are catchy and definite sing alongs.
But the songs that stand out are very much like some of the songs you hear on "Gimme Fiction". The band's sound hasn't changed. What made "Gimme Fiction" good is what makes this album good. It doesn't really feel like the band has moved forward, except perhaps in terms of popularity.
Of course this doesn't mean that it's not a good compilation. The catchy song titles match the catchy songs, but it feels like the band didn't achieve anything new. This album could have been a double disc with "Gimme Fiction" and it would have worked.
However, if you're new to Spoon, go check it out. This band is definitely worth your time. It's a sound you won't quickly forget, and might influence the rest of your musical listening career.
Showing a different side.......2007-07-18
**In my opinion, buy this album if you truly like Spoon's music, (not the OC soundtracks) and you will not be disappointed.

- Paul talks about the music of Memory Almost Full
Amazon.com
"Many years from now" must have seemed like an understatement to 16-year-old Paul McCartney, wondering if he'd still be needed or fed at the age of 64. As it turned out, all doubt as to the latter had ceased by his 22nd birthday (though few could have predicted he'd end up washing down those meals with the liquid pride of Seattle). As to the former? Now that McCartney, as of the date of this album's release, has reached that mythic age, his greatest work is 40 years behind him, his solo peak over 30 years gone. Does the world need a new Paul McCartney album? The answer is yes, at least as much as it needs anything else that passes for music these days. With Memory Almost Full, Macca is back. No, it's not Ram or Band on the Run. It might not even be Flowers in the Dirt--in 1989, he had a full band, the support of Linda, and Elvis Costello as a collaborator. Here, he's on his own. Literally: on the majority of the tracks, everything but the strings is multi-instrumentalist Paul. But the surprise is that it's one of his freest, loosest affairs in years, sonically reminiscent of the Tug of War/Pipes of Peace era with nods to Abbey Road in the album-closing medley, McCartney's gravelly tones on "Gratitude," and 2007's version of "Her Majesty," the palate-cleansing "Nod Your Head." It's a surprise because of the album's inescapable sense of retrospection ("Ever Present Past," "Vintage Clothes," "That Was Me") and even a bit of weariness. The next-to-last song is "The End of the End," after all, in which McCartney tells us about what he'd like to happen "on the day that I die." (He wants "songs that were sung/to be hung out like blankets/that lovers have played on/and laid on while listening to songs that were sung," and will likely get his wish.) But it never gets overwhelming, for McCartney mostly resists his tendency to get plodding and maudlin. In fact, Memory Almost Full must be the most sanguine album made during the dissolution of a marriage since...well, ever. "What went out is coming back," he sings in "Vintage Clothes," and from the sound of things, that may not be just wishful thinking. What's past is prologue; if we're lucky, what to come may be McCartney's late renaissance. --Benjamin LukoffAlbum Description
The 13 new songs on Memory Almost Full are performed entirely by Paul McCartney (excluding strings) and produced by Grammy Award-winner David Kahne (The Strokes, Sublime, Bruce Springsteen and more). This beautifully-packaged, deluxe limited edition also comes with a 2nd disc that contains 3 unreleased bonus tracks and audio commentary by Paul McCartney describing the music, 6 foldout color postcard-sized photos, and full lyrics.

I've been Very Critical..........2007-07-25
Here, after the better "Chaos" CD comes what has been to become known as "MAF!" I've really waited the month or so to listen to this one and I've decided this...
1.) Dance Tonight: Charming
2.) Ever Present Past: No...
3.) See Your Sunshine:...Errr...no
4.) Only Mama Knows: Nice rocker
5.) You Tell Me:....too draggy
6.) Mr. Bellamy: What's this? Great track!
7.) Gratitude: Ugh..didn't like it immediately...No.
8.) Vintage Clothes: Very Good.
9.) That Was Me: Like it...a lot.
10.) Feet in The clouds:...okay
11.) House Of Wax: What Is This?! I LOVE THIS SONG! Very different from anything I think I've ever heard Macca do. Very cool. My favorite track on this CD.
12.) The End of the End: Wow. Very thought provoking.
13.) Nod Yor Head: Rocking closer....it's alright.
The bonus tracks (In Private, Why So Blue & 222) could easily replace the songs I downed. I've always wondered if both this one and Chaos would have been much better if Macca GREAT touring band had played on all the tracks. i think by him doing everything it tends to loose flavor.
Just my opini-onion.
I like Dance Tonight, Mr Bellamy, Vintage Clothes, That Was Me and I love House of Wax.

Fans of Rickie Lee Jones and Jesus Christ can decide whether this devotional music is rapturously spiritual or deliriously strange. It sounds like nothing Jones has previously released, or anything characterizable as contemporary Christian. Instead, her voice soars and wobbles through repetitive, stream-of-consciousness incantations over rhythmic throbs and pulses. On "Where I Like It Best," Jones testifies to the power of private prayer (while seeming to cast churchgoers as hypocrites). The feral distortions of "Tried to Be a Man" recall some of the textures (if not the themes) of her former boyfriend Tom Waits, while the acoustic setting of "Donkey Ride" features guitar tunings that might make Sonic Youth wince and "Elvis Cadillac" conjures a singular vision of heaven. At close to eight and a half minutes, the closing "I Was There" seems to follow Van Morrison into the mystic. Some of this music is oddly affecting; much of it is merely odd. --Don McLeeseAlbum Description
THE SERMON ON EXPOSITION BOULEVARD, the new album by Rickie Lee Jones and her first for New West Records, is a beauty--soul-satisfying and sonically unique. RICKIE LEE sounds completely tapped in, alive and vital, heading down some mighty interesting roads and discovering new magical essences. Lots of creative sparks here--plenty of them. She sounds like she's going through a transformation throughout the album in a way that's reminiscent of Van Morrison's performances on his classic album Astral Weeks. This is the Special Edition of Rickie Lee Jones' new CD, Sermon On Exposition Boulevard. Originally I purchaed the censored version of this album, but realized I could not stand the censoring that was going on. The blanks in the singing just threw me off. Within two weeks of listening to the censored version, I ordered the uncensored one, and haven't gone back since.
All out fun power pop........2007-07-01
There are 4 or 5 tracks that could easily be singles on the CD and they probably will become just that. Her label will likely milk this for a few years.
Compared to her last two it's somewhat a mix of the styles. The more pop-oriented of her first and the harder-edged sounds of her second CD (which I didn't care much for).
It's kind of a nice mix. You don't get too much of either. :)
On the other hand, I much preferred her first CD so to me this is much like a return to that sound.
A few of the tracks are more "punk" than I like, but those same tracks will likely appeal to many of her fans.
If you like Avril, then you must buy this CD (however, you probably already have).
Get her new CD from Amazon, not TARGET.......2007-06-29
At least I was able to give the other CD to my step-daughter, now she can listen to it without all the bad words in.
However, Avril did a great job, I love all her CD's, can't wait for the next one.

sick re-issue but yet 1 flaw.......2007-07-28
Raw & eccentric Hip-Hop at its best.......2007-07-25
Flawless Doom ..........2007-07-24
The album begins with 'Beef Rapp', which is a half instrumental/sampled song until he finally decides to start rapping two minutes into it. In this particular song his scruffy voice compliments the heavy and loud superhero sounding beat. His lyrics are impressive: ""Heart attack, heart disease ... ain't no holding back once arteries start to squeeze." 'Hoe Cakes' uses a spit sounding beat with a female sample saying "Super" throughout the chorus - interesting mix. 'Potholderz,' featuring Count Bass D, is a decent song with an average beat ... however Doom really begins to shine in 'One Beer' and 'Deep Fried Frenz.' Both of these songs show his quick and witty delivery and interesting lyrics. Unfortunately, both of these songs have annoying beats that make it rather difficult to listen to. 'Poo Putt Platter' through 'Fig Leaf' are all instrumentals, however it's worth the waiting because Doom shows up in tip top form for the remainder of the album. 'Kon Kane' makes a departure from the annoying beats mentioned previously by introducing a quick piano melody with what sounds like Space Invaders taser blasts. 'Guinnesses' features Angelika and 4ize, and this song is one of the best tracks on the album. It's a unique and addicting Rockabilly beat, all delivered by Angelika. Doom is only present during the chorus where he relates "War wounds, morphine, and veterans" to marrying and trying to tame a female! "Some chicks are just too hard to wife!" In 'Kon Queso' Doom picks a perfect match of beat, melody, and lyrics. It is a really quick pulsating beat with exceptional lyrics. "When it rain it sure do thunderstorm / I got more rhymes in the summer than musty underarms." He really shines; and it continues to get better. After 'Rapp Snitch,' a cheesy filler song, Doom continues to blow the album up with 'Vomitspit.' Not only does this song sport a crazy beat, his lyrics don't get any better. "The mask is like Jason / They told the place not to let the basket type case in / He could be some kind of wacko / Waiting for the chance to heat the pipes like a crack hoe." And finally, the last song caps off a great album. 'Kookies' has a beat that you just want to row your windows down and cruise to. This song is an interesting one in which Doom refers to trying to track down females online to his cookie consumption habits over a brass sounding beat. "Catch sugar fits every time he sees a nice pair of / Chips ahoy double chocolate chunk / Something with the bubble and the junk in the trunk"
Overall, the album is great. It took me a few times through to really apprecaite how well thought the album is. It truly grows on you. I find it interesting how he relates different stuff to food. There are quite a few songs that are just samples on the album; in fact, almost every song has samples and cartoons mixed towards the end. This frustrates some people, however it mostly all tells a story - why he wears his mask. This doesn't take away from the album in any form or fashion.
"I elect Doom master of the Universe!"

At long last, Lindsay Lohan and Meryl Streep sing on the same CD. Okay, so they don't actually duet, but both do perform on the soundtrack to Robert Altman's take on Garrison Keillor's popular radio show. (Keillor fans will know exactly what to expect, as the film is scrupulously faithful to his universe, and Keillor and his Shoe Band wrote a good deal of the songs.) As anybody who's seen Postcards from the Edge knows, Streep can really sing, and she sounds great in the rootsy, old-style country vein that makes up most of this soundtrack. Her rollicking duets with her screen sister Lily Tomlin, "My Minnesota Home" and "Goodbye to My Mama," are priceless. Woody Harrelson and John C. Reilly are beyond crusty on "Whoop-I-Ti-Yi-Yo," which sounds like both an outtake from and a parody of O Brother, Where Art Thou?, while "Bad Jokes" is, well, just that. As for Lohan, who plays Streep's daughter, her version of "Frankie & Johnny" is a little shaky but heartfelt and kinda adorable. Purists, you can start hollering now. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Reilly, Kevin Kline, Lindsay Lohan, Virginia Madsen, Maya Rudolph, and Tommy Lee Jones. The story is a fictional one of what happens on and off stage during the last broadcast of the beloved radio show. The soundtrack showcases the spectacular onstage performances by the cast. Offered here is a regular audio-only version and a CD + DVD deluxe version packed with performance footage and film outtakes.Customer Reviews:

The Marvelous Meryl Streep.......2007-03-09
The highlight has to be, though, the beautiful voice of Meryl Streep. Not only is she the world's greatest living actress, but she is a profoundly talented and gifted vocalist. Her grace, warmth, depth, and beauty give a gorgeous elegance - and eloquence - to the songs she performs. I challenge anyone to listen to "Goodbye to My Mama" without becoming teary-eyed. Streep is, in every way, quite simply...extraordinary.
A highly recommended collection of entertaining and touching songs.
Great album!

Radiohead's American follow-up to OK Computer is essentially a glorified single for "Airbag," the song that also opens the album, with six new tracks appended (including an instrumental). They're mostly cut from the same cloth as the album, but briefer and flinchier--Thom Yorke's voice, gentle and clear as it is, seems like it can barely push past waves of horror into audibility. Once again, they plumb a few Pink Floydian tricks--the tapes of not-quite-clear voices that open "A Reminder," the pacing, descending riff of "Pearly"--and, though none of the new tracks is quite up to the level of OK Computer (they could well be outtakes), they fit together into a short, despairing suite. --Douglas WolkAlbum Description

back in print?.......2007-07-04
A few years ago this CD could not be found under $30 used.
And it is an essential companion to OK Computer.
A nice companion to "OK Computer.".......2007-04-29
I really love OK Computer and was looking forward to the B-side. People who own that album already know the first track, "Airbag," which is Radiohead greatness, and with some excellent Thom Yorke lyrics, guitar effects and playing, and such. It's actually the song that inspired me to buy said album.
As for the B-sides, they aren't as good as that album, but I think it's far above average, even for B-sides. I really liked the instrumental "Meeting in the Aisle," as well as the others. The songs here are actually pretty catchy, particularly in "Palo Alto," the last track on the record. It's back in print after a long time. So no longer is it "limited edition" as Amazon.com lists. And at some places it is sold at a very good price; you can get it for roughly eight bucks at your nearest Best Buy.
Overall, a casual Radiohead fan may not want this, but if you're into the group already, I recommend it. And in comparison to the actual studio albums, I'd actually put it ahead of the last two LP's, as well as of course Pablo Honey (has moments but is scattershot).
Dear Amazon: "OK Computer" is the title of that album, and taking it out of my title makes no sense at all. Also, I apologize for price comparisons, although I'd either be a lot poorer or would own way less music if I never did such a thing.
Save your money.......2007-04-25
Airbag, which incidentally happens to be the only track on OK Computer, happens to be the best song on this EP. Most of the others seem disorganized and disoriented... "Pearly" is a clear step down from the track that precedes it. "Polyethylene" is decent, but would still only make an average (at best) song on OK Computer.
If you already have all of Radiohead's material, go ahead and get this. But get the rest of it (with the obvious exception of Pablo Honey) first.
Cheaper alternative for the US to obtain some of OK's b-sides..........2006-10-13

Great album, with bonus stuff!.......2007-06-20
Enough about the limited edition and its superiority. AWWTM itself contains no bad songs except for "Haven't Got a Clue", which TOTALLY BITES. I s'pose you ought to read reviews of just the album to find out more about its content, but I thought I'd throw that in. So yeah, the album gets a 4.999999999999999999999999999999, rounded up to 5. And the limited edition? 5 all the way.
Great first DVD Audio disc for you.......2007-03-09
The Flaming Lips are on the forefront of surround sound tech and have produced several amazing discs. This is no exception and may be their best surround disc yet. Videos are included for many songs as well as some interesting video accompaniment to other tunes.
The original CD is also included, but the High res stuff is simply extraordinary. Listen with a 5.1 speaker set up and you will not be sorry you finally shook yourself out of the stereo-only crowd and came on up to DVD-A!
Worth it........2007-01-12
The sound is brilliant, the high quality surround sound really does affect the songs. Each listen you will find bits you didn't hear on the CD, in some cases because they've been 'brought forward' and in some cases because they didn't previously exist on the CD album. iI brings the whole album to life and gives all the tracks an extra depth. Tracks like "The W.A.N.D" and "Yeah Yeah Yeah Song" are, unbelievably perhaps, even more fun! I think a key track on this is "Pompeii am Gotterammerdung" (forgive my spelling if I've got that wrong), which is much more intense on this CD.
The booklet also makes this a wonderful package, it's got a lot of information in it, mostly written by lead singer Wayne Coyne. There is a breakdown of each of the tracks meanings, and also a description of what's different for each track on this album in comparison to the CD, which is a really interesting little read. For example, if I remember correctly, in "Pompeii...", actual recordings of a volcano are used!?
Also worth noting is the bonus tracks, including covers and 'remixes' (or at least strange versions of known songs) although sadly most of these are not in 5.1 sound, however they are of course still high quality. Thankfully their cover of Bohemian Rhapsody is in 5.1!!
If you like the album, I would definitely recommend buying this DVD, it will be a welcome addition to your collection.
If you're considering buying the album as a first you might as well go for this package as it has the CD included also.
A Great Thing Just Got Better.......2006-11-04
The answer is: Yes
The 5.1 mix is worth the price alone, but you also get a nice collection of bonus material. You get videos, alternate versions and even new radio sessions.
Not only do you get all of that, but you also get the album on CD. Now you can give your old copy to a friend and you not only give the gift of the Flaming Lips, but you also look like a super nice person. You can't lose!
