5 out of 5 stars The best of latin music through Domingo's voice.......1999-08-10

This CD goes wherever I go, it is with no doubt, the queen of my collection. Medleys are wonderfully orchestrated and arranged and every song makes you travel anywhere between Mexico and Buenos Aires. Here, Domingo's voice is more like a musical instrument than anything else and each song you'll discover a new instrument. Honestly, I would personally award it six stars.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Latin American tunes beautifully sung and produced,.......1998-12-11

Domingo's love for traditional Latin American music shines throughout this CD. A selection of great "standards", beautifully arranged and recorded by one of the world's great voices. "De Mexico a Buenos Aires," written by Domingo's son is the one original song on the recording and is one of many highlights here. I have listenned to this CD countless times over the past two years and it remains a delight.

5 out of 5 stars The most noble voice.......2004-05-28

Victoria de los Angeles' voice not only has a silken quality and fascinating glow to it but it is one of the most regal, noble sounds you'll ever hear. She illuminated those moments of quietness, gentleness and noble, feminine pride and elegance like no other soprano before and after her. This release of her "Spanish Songs" has never been surpassed. The songs of her homeland seem to have been written for her beautiful instrument alone, she fills every piece with special beauty and charm, religious flair and beautiful, noble simplicity. Buy this recording and see why Victoria is one of the best sopranos ever having come from Spain.

FOR A LONG TIME "SONGS OF SPAIN" HAS BEEN MY FAVORITE ALBUM OF CLASSICAL, POPULAR, SECULAR AND RELIGIOUS (CHRISTIAN AND SEPHARDIC) SPANISH SONGS. DE LOS ANGELES DEFIES A RIVAL IN THIS GENRE. DE LARROCHA, SORIANO AND ZANETTI PROVIDE UNEQUALED ACCOMPANIEMENTS. THE RECORDINGS ARE SECOND ONLY TO LIFE PERFORMANCES. I UNDERSTAND THAT EMI INTENDS TO TAKE THIS SET OUT OF PUBLICATION. PURCHASE THIS JEWEL WHILE YOU CAN! I JUST PURCHASED MY THIRD SET FROM AMAZON AND I TREASURE IT AS MUCH AS MY FIRST!

the vocal artist of vocal artistsdisplays her absolutely gorgeous voice and musical understanding of spanish feeling with a warmth that is unmatched anywhere.the only thing better was to hear her in person!

5 out of 5 stars A special Dignity and an Unfailing Beauty of Voice........2000-09-17

This set offers four generously-filled CDs comprising almost 140 Spanish songs from Victoria de los Angeles' repertoire. To all of them she brings a special dignity and an unfailing beauty of voice. The earliest recordings date from 1950 and the last is the items she sang at the opening of the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. Yes, you will find the ubiquitous "Clavelitos!" here, and a later version of "La maya el ruisenor" from "Goyescas". The enclosed booklet provides illuminating notes by Lionel Salter, who also translated many of the texts which are also included. Accompanists include Gerald Moore and Alicia de Larrocha, and Victoria de Los Angeles provides a guitar accompaniment herself in one song. The last track of all, a zapateado from a zarzuela, recorded live in New York, must almost have brought the house down.

Before their expulsion in 1492, the Jews of medieval Spain developed a rich and lively culture, including an exquisite repertory of songs called romanceros--and they kept that repertory alive as they settled in places as diverse as Morocco, Bosnia, Turkey, and Bulgaria. Lovely as the romanceros are, they would have languished as the objects of ethnomusicological studies and might have disappeared altogether, were it not for the efforts of gifted musicians like Hespèrion XX. Jordi Savall and his ensemble, fronted by the unique soprano Montserrat Figueras, just about single-handedly brought those songs to the attention of the modern public with this 1976 recording (now reissued at a bargain price). Disc 1 features a selection of secular music from "Christian" Spain--that is, the courts of Ferdinand and Isabella and the Catholic nobility. The music is elegant and occasionally austere, but Figueras, Savall, and colleagues give the livelier pieces a flavorful swing. Yet disc 2, which features the Sephardic songs, is the real drawing card here. It was in Moorish Spain that Jewish culture flourished, so Hespèrion XX performs the romanceros with Arabic instruments, such as the 'ud (the ancestor of the European lute) and hand drums. These musicians, rechristened Hespèrion XXI in honor of the new century, perform this repertory with more polish now than they did in 1976, but--just as A Feather on the Breath of God did for Hildegard von Bingen--this recording made its own little bit of musical history. --Matthew Westphal

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Like a religious experience.......2007-03-28

This disc is pure magic that transends and defies definition. It is time period music that has been rereleased to capture the magic of the original recording. Each song is amazing. The music creates a mood that is best enjoyed alone ,in private so that your thoughts can be elevated to the point of inspiration. Although I like both discs I prefer the one that features Sephardic Romances over the disc that is Court Music and Songs. Montserrat Figueras angelic voice lends itself to beautiful interpretations of these beautiful songs from the Age before the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. This ancient music is preserved and freshly interpreted under the masterful leadership of Jordi Savall for an authentic recreation. If you have never heard Hesperion XX check this one out, it is fantastic. Recommended for classical music fans who want to hear something different. Once you hear Montserrat Figuerras voice you will feel the inspiration and be hooked on her angelic voice.

3 out of 5 stars Dissappointing soprano.......2006-02-22

I was excitet buying this CD, expecting the quality of songs equal or better than
Begona Olavide and Carlos Paniagua on MA recodings. The music was fine but singing by soprano Montserrat Figueras was borderline annoying.

5 out of 5 stars A balm for any soul.......2001-01-02

Attempting to review a Savall/Figueras CD is a frustrating task. The arsenal of superlatives is so quickly depleted. Terms like 'matchless' and 'unique' might be used, but lack strict definition. After all, a 'matchless' voice needn't be a good one. Terms like 'divine' or 'angelic' tend to remove Montserrat's singing from the real and human. She's nothing if not human. Having been blessed with watching as well as hearing her perform, vouching for her vitality on a stage is easy. But the superior quality of her voice and presentation is so far above the mundane or common as to become nearly indescribable. Anything less than adulation for her seems to indicate shortcomings in the disk or performer. Neither performance nor disk quality falls short here. That she performs religious songs here simply adds to the power of her impact on the listener. You necessarily hesitate, cease other activity, and, if moved enough, drop to your knees in respect and admiration. Tough to do in a crowded concert hall, but the motivation is there. And this from someone who shunned listening to vocal performances for many years. Dame Kiri was one exception and Argenta another, but the discovery of Figueras was the discovery of a voice without flaw.

Anyone visiting this page must certainly know of Jordi Savall and Hesperion XX. You may, however, have missed the glory of Montserrat Figueras' voice. Make up for that lack right away. The selections available here are pitifully limited, but this CD is as good an introduction as any. Don't hesitate to sit and enjoy this music. The sounds received will be a reward to whatever spiritual sense you possess.

5 out of 5 stars Ten stars if possible..........2000-01-27

I agree completely with Stephan: outstanding performance. Montserrat at her best. If "Si d'amor pena sentis" doesn't bring tears to your eyes, what does?

3 out of 5 stars Historical re-release.......1999-07-20

Hesperion XX were pioneers in reviving this music, and collectors will value these recordings which first came out in 1976. However most listeners may prefer more recent recordings by Wimmer on Naxos, and Alia Musica on Harmonia Mundi which have digital sound and include Spanish, and occasionally Hebrew, texts and translations.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Delightful.......2004-05-24

"Song of David" is the CD that introduced me the vast world of Jewish music, taught me there is more to it than klezmer and "Hava Nagila," and served as the catalyst for my evergrowing collection of Jewish music from around the world. The music selections and recording quality are superb.

4 out of 5 stars A Song of David: Music to my heart.......2003-01-01

I own and enjoy several other CDs of Sephardic music, but this one is my favorite. The melodies are poignant, lively and celebratory. I don't speak Spanish, but to listen and suddenly hear familiar Hebrew phrases and words emerge makes me feel connected to the Jewish communities that flourished in Spain a thousand years ago.

My only complaint is that the lyrics as sung don't always match with the lyrics as printed. Syllables and letters seem to be missing from the printed version.

I prefer the merengue songs over anything else. I say maybe 8 out of 11 songs here are good.

2 out of 5 stars Big Change for Olga, with mixed results.......2005-03-05

Rating: *** (can't change the above)

With Yo Por Ti, Olga Tanon entered the new century by remaking her overall image, her appearance, her music and even to some extent, her vocal delivery. Gone is the senora persona of the 90s, the fur, heavy makeup, and Spanish clothes. Altered significantly is the unique merengue "Olga-style" that reached its apotheosis in Siente el Amor and Llevame Contigo. This trend began with Te Acordaras de Mi--and now a new hip modern Olga appears.

Clearly, the new Olga has a much broader appeal than the old. The songs on this album have a pop overlay to them that was absent from most of her earlier music. I would say that the result is variable in quality.

1. Mientame - a very appealing merengue/ballad, and Olga's singing is lovely.
2.Pegaito - At first I hated this song, but when I saw it was arranged by the great Cuco Pena, I figured there must be more to it, and indeed, there is. Olga's singing is quite amazing, and the song is pretty cute.
3. Como Olvidar - A low key merengue that has a bit of a disco sound to it. A nice enjoyable song, if not outstanding.
4. Me Gusta - This is just awful. Should not be here.
5. Tu te lo Pierdas - This is a good club dance type song, along the lines of Gloria's No me dejes de querer, or Oye. As such, very enjoyable, but not much depth here.
6. Quiero que tu me quieras - Speaking of Gloria Estefan, if I didn't know, I would swear it was she singing her. The song and Olga's delivery is ver much in her style. A nice song.
7. Yo Por Ti - The title song is another easy going merengue that is very nice, but not a truly great one.
8. I Wanna Have Fun - Another awful party song that detracts from the album.
9.Ahora Soy Mala. - The best song on the album, and the one that harks back most closely to Olga's old style. Yet it is different enough-- you would not expect to find this song on Llevame Contigo. Olga belts it out like never before. A few more songs like this would have greatly improved the album.
10. Prohibido el Paso - I am not a fan of Olga's ballades, but this one is very good. The song has an attractive melodic line, transforming to a very strong conclusion. Olga's singing is full and powerful.
11. The album ends with a ballad version of Como Olvidar. In my opinion, it adds nothing of interest to the song, and feels like filler here.

Overall, Yo Por Ti is a very enjoyable album, one which I like much more now than I did initially. Yet in no way does it supercede her best work of the 90s. LLevame Contigo is still her strongest album, if you are willing to open your mind to a more traditional style. It would have been greatly strengthened by eliminating the "party" songs and substituting a few more hard hitting merengues. Hence I do not find it quite the smash album it is widely regarded.

The best songs are Mientame and Ahora Soy Mala - these two, I hope, will form the inspiration of a new and modern style for Olga in upcoming albums.

4 out of 5 stars Olga leaves the dark ages........2005-02-09

Great deliverance from her 1990's CD's, this is a very good prelude to "Sobrevivir". She's in very good form and the music is more versatile and better sung, if a little more pop. This is to be expected in this day and age. She has so much nonsense to compete with and here she delivers. Best Cuts: Tu Te Lo Pierdes, Como Olvidar (Balada), Pegaito, Mienteme, and Quiero Que Tu Me Quieras. Vocally she is in very good form and the material here is stronger then on previous recordings . I rate this a 4 star of 5

5 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful........2003-04-07

Olga Tañon besides being the Queen of Merengue is known as "La mujer de fuego" (fire woman) because of her voice and strengh in her music and lyrics.
In 2001 she released this production which was a big hit in the U.S, Latin America and Spain. The first single "Como olvidar" (how can I forget) was a #1 hit and was released in merengue and ballad. That single was follwed by "Mienteme" (Lie to me), another big hit.
This album is basically a Merengue one, the only pop song is the ballad "Como olvidar". There are great songs to dance like "Tu te lo pierdes" (you miss it) that has 100% of rhythm, "Me gusta" (I like it) another great track, "I wanna have fun" which is in Spanish. There's one song that is softer but doesn't lose its Merengue style, the song is the one that gives little to the cd, "Yo por ti" (Me for you).
This cd won the 2002 Grammy for best Latin album and debuted at #4 in the American charts.
I would also recommend her 2002 cd "Sobrevivir" (Survive) which is amazing but doesn't have the rhythm that this one has. It has more ballads and also includes a duet with hit Latin singer Luis Fonsi and includes also the 2003 #1 hit "Asi es la vida" (That's the way life is) which is a Merengue song.
