Excellent Introduction to Spanish Classical Guitar Music.......2005-09-18

As a sampler, this CD is an excellent introduction both to Spanish classical guitar music and to guitarist John Williams.
The music ranges from Renaissance composers (Sanz, Mudarra) and harmonized folk melodies to standard 20th Century works (Rodrigo, Torroba etc).

John Williams is excellent throughout. The CD is also cheap, and can be used either just for enjoyment, or further to explore other recordings by Williams, the classical guitar repertoire, or other classical guitarists.

As a marketing ploy, it is very effective.

For the collector or classical guitar enthusiast, the chief disadvantages of the CD are duplication of other recordings, and that the way at least some of the works on this CD are listed isn't helpful in telling the listener the set(s) to which these pieces belong and how to find them (e.g. "from ______, Op # "). The font listing the titles and track numbers is small and somewhat hard to read.

However, this CD should attract many listeners and enthusiasts both to the classical guitar, the repertoire, and guitarist John Williams - and I'm all for that.

Over 70 minutes playing time.

This admirable concept belongs to Hector Berlioz and it must not be a surprise the best guitarrists in the story have in common this trademark.

John Williams has always known the delicate equilibrium between the expresiveness and the glamouer. His impresive technique however is not exposed as his prima edonna. He goes directly to the soul of the composer, melts in his spirit and let the music sharp the qith eloquent conviction the composer's demanded atmosphere.

From Granados to Albeniz, from Rodrigo to Agustin Barrios - El indio Mangore -, from Moreno Torroba to Ponce , you will find the warmth, the passion and the Midas touch of this golden guitarrist.

I originally bought this album three years ago, looking for a good introduction to Spanish guitar music. And this one fits that need perfectly. I still listen to and enjoy it today. I play this for guests at happy hour or dinner for a relaxed atmosphere. At Amazon's current price, this is a great value.

This album/cd is extraordinary. All the songs are gorgeous and exciting to listen to. John Williams' interpretation and technique are perfect. After 22 years of listening to it, I still enjoy and appreciate it more every time. I love giving it as a gift.

Not ultimate- but wonderful, none-the-less.......2007-04-14

As good a guitarist as Julian Bream is, one must begin by acknowledging that the title of this 2-CD set containing 32 admittedly seminal pieces written for hand-played strings ( primarily, the lute) is a tad hyperbolistic. An "Ultimate" collection of anything would have to be more complete, by definition, than any two CDs can be and, again, it almost goes without saying that no two people are apt to be in total agreement about what should or should not have been included in any such collection. All caveats considered and aside, this is, indeed, a thoughtfully selected and masterfully performed collection of what is, unarguably, some of the very best classical pieces ever written for the lute. Bream plays some of them on the guitar and others on a renaissance lute - the latter giving a somewhat truer indication of the stylings and musical nuances intended by the various composers. But, even the pieces he plays on the guitar - an instrument that, in it's current form, did not exist when many of the pieces were originally composed - are sensitive and lyrical interpretations that sound as if they MIGHT have been composed for the guitar.

Without spending space here reiterating the specific pieces, their titles and lengths, I will simply list the composers whose works Bream presents so nicely in this collection. They span a range of about five centuries beginning in the time of England's Elizabeth I and spanning the years through to the 20th Century's premier Spanish and Brazilian classical guitar composers. The list reads like a `Whose Who" of classical plucked-string instrument music and of composers whose keyboard compositions work particularly well on the strings of a lute or guitar, and includes;
- John Dowland
- Francis Cutting
- Antonio Vivaldi
- Gaspar Sanz (*)
- Mateo Albeniz (*)
- Manuel de Falla
- Enrique Granados (*)
- Hector Villa-Lobos, and
- Joaquin Rodrigo

Every classical guitarist has his own recognizable style and approach to the instrument and the material. An experience listener would not confuse Bream's work with that of Andres Segovia, for example: but it is not that one is better than the other. Each, in his own distinctive way, is simply superb. Though the Spanish influence is clearly audible with both musicians, Bream's stylings have a more contemporary lilt and inflection than do those of Segovia; he makes each piece his own. One suspects that each time he plays a piece it comes out differently according to the moment, his mood, the instrument and God knows what else. Segovia, on the other hand, was well known for his constancy once he had found a version of each piece that fully suited his own ear and temperament.
While I am admittedly a Segovia fan, I find Bream's renditions to be noticeably fresher and each infused with an aura of presence in the here-and-now which I find especially enjoyable.

The collection is neither complete not `ultimate', but it is VERY good and well worth having in any collection of classical guitar music. In fact, for audiophiles not familiar with this genre, it is a fair place to begin to develop an ear for and a listener's knowledge of and experience with the classical guitar.

Very Nice Bream Collection.......2005-03-03

I have volumes one and two, but I prefer volume two because it contains later recordings, which are of a better sound quality than the tin-can reverb that predominates in volume one. I really like the inclusion of about a half dozen lute pieces in addition to the guitar. I wasn't a lute fan before, but after hearing Bream playing lute on this CD, I am a convert. Ditto with what one reviewer said about Sor's Andantino Grazioso--purely delightful.

Overall, this CD consists of a good variety of masterfully played music. I only wish most of Bream's recordings were recorded using later technology, which would make his playing shine even more.

Not what I thought!.......2004-11-08

Well, a bit of a "anti-climax"! I was expecting something totally different. Not at all the kind of guitar music I like but will make out a great unexpected gift (hopefully). The delivery time from order to delivery was excellant, 19days - internationally!

A wonderful companion to the first set, this edition includes 20 beautifully recorded pieces by one of the master guitarists of the twentieth century. And Bream is at his best in these recordings, showing off his amazing technique, as well as his almost daunting emotional power. An amazing gift to guitarists and music lovers.

The brilliance of Breams guitar/lute shines through. If you love any of his work you will love this, I can never get tired of his work.Especially this one. Antantino grazioso is absolutely amazing.

This is an amazing CD. I recommend it highly for reading on a rainy day, relaxing, or just reading the paper on a Sunday morning. It's one of my top 10 relaxation CDs.

Great CD all around!.......2005-08-30

I got this CD because I am a massage therapist,and refuse to buy
those cheesey new agey relaxation CD's.I was finally getting a little tired of the bach cello concertos and a couple of other classical recordings that had been deemed "relaxing",and decided to try this one.It is great!I never seem to get tired of it!I have not had a client that didn't love it.Most even ask what it is because they like it so much.Based on the success of this CD,I am going to try the Cello For Relaxation CD in the same series.I hope that it is just as much of a hit!

This CD definitely lives up to it's name. Julian Bream's guitar playing is ethereal and leaves your mind in a state of blissful relaxation...A wonderful collection! Well worth the investment!

Very Relaxing, Highly Recommended!.......2005-05-03

I find myself choosing this CD whenever I want to unwind. It is absolutely exquisite. I have bought quite a few different "relaxation" CD's, and this is my favorite.

Has hard-to-find pieces by Bream.......2003-02-20

Despite a title sure to embarrass any self-respecting music snob, this is no less than a full disc of nicely mastered solo guitar recordings by the great Julian Bream (a string quartet joins Bream on one track). If these pieces could be easily found elsewhere, on albums with more continuity, then this disc wouldn't be worth buying. But probably 40% of the material on this cd can't be found in print, to my knowledge. In particular, the Mompou, Mozart, Llobet, Aguado, Henze, and Diabelli tracks aren't readily available elsewhere as of early 2003. Several of these tracks are nice hefty 6-7 minute pieces. In particular, the beautiful Andante from Diabelli's Sonata, arranged by Bream himself, is worth the purchase price by itself. If you're a Bream fan trying to get beyond his half-dozen easily available cds, add this to your collection.

A Classical guitarist and collector of the genre, I can only rave about this cd. I purchased several of these cd's for my close friends and family. The two Paganini pieces are awsome.
Hopefully, Denon will produce more of the same. This time they supply the names of their artists. Well Done! Bravo!

Liebert's no classical ace--as he'll gladly admit--but the same well-meaning audacity that turned his watered-down flamenco technique into music of nevertheless universal appeal serves him well here. Weak Orchestral Arrangements + Not Ottmar's Best.......2004-12-30

I am a fan of Ottmar's work so I did not hesitate when I found a copy of this album for sale. Though not a terrible record it is not what your average Ottmar fan has come to expect. The orchestral arrangements are clumsy or forgettable at best - inappropriate and dischordant at worst. Ottmar's guitar work is mostly relegated to plinking along - sometimes in a slightly dissonant fashion - on top of the orchestral arrangements. None of it is horrible, and a few cuts are even interesting, but my guess is that the typical Ottmat Leibert fan won't be listening to this CD more than once or twice. There are FAR better choices for anyone who likes Ottmar's work. Stick with his more popular stuff and save having to trade this in for somethign else (as I will be doing).

A must for any collection.......2002-04-30

This is simply one of the best CD's I have in my collection of approximately 2000. Incredibly beautiful, accessable, and seems to get better with every listen. Anyone who likes Jazz/New Age/Classical type guitar music cannot go wrong with this CD.

Surprisingly good.......2001-09-06

Ottmar Liebert is surprisingly graceful, restrained and subtle on this sincere and authentic ode to classical Spanish guitar. Liebert succeeds in exploring the subtly colored emotions of classical Spanish guitar music. There is a light flavouring of New Age in this CD, but in the very positive sense of authentically vulnerable tenderness rather than sappy sentimentality. It is clear that Liebert is treading new ground for himself here, and he does so with a refreshing and charming openness. A very pleasant CD that grows on you, and that can be played either in the foreground or the background.

Ottmar's finest work.......1998-09-02

I first found Ottmar when his Nouveau Flamingo CD was playing in a gift shop on the Cape Fear River in Wilmington, NC in 1993. Since then, I have found his music to be some of the best of New Age Jazz. But this album. WOW! No matter what style of music one prefers, this is simply one of the most beautiful albums I have ever heard. Incredibly powerful! Thank you, Ottmar!

An eminent display of guitar repertoire mastery.......1999-11-05

Norbert gives us a fine selection of favorites performed with consummate mastery of the instrument recorded here, in what must be close to acoustic heaven, the St. John Chrysostom Church, Newmarket, Canada.

For quality of tone and dynamic phrasing Kraft is undoubtedly in the top echelon of performers. From the lilting, romantic barcarole Julia Florida of Barrios, to the strident energy and passion of Danza Espanola No. 5 by Granados, Norbert treats us to a dynamic journey of sonorous emotions.

For the music lover, this recording offers a great introduction to the world of the Spanish guitar, but for the guitar enthusiast, an array of well-polished musical gems to be inspired by and finally, in the challenging preludes of Villa-Lobos, a level of mastery which few concert guitarists have attained and that mere mortals can only marvel at. Enjoy this fine recording, there is no better value available on CD today!

Great album.......2007-07-24

There have been at least three CD releases by Bream entitled "Romantic Guitar", and I believe this one from 1991 is identical to the first "Romantic Guitar" issue from 1988 which featured a butterfly on the cover (part of a budget series at the time called the "Papillon collection"). I would recommend this issue over the one described below.
Afterward this edition of "Romantic Guitar" came a 1994 release (search Amazon for B000003FFZ), which substituted some Ravel and Debussy for the Villa-Lobos, the traditional "El testament de Amèlia", and the Torroba piece here. While I don't own a copy of the 1994 cd, I can't see that it would be an improvement over the selection offered on this edition, which flows well from start to finish.
Bream's RCA recordings, particularly this one and "Popular Classics for Spanish Guitar" (1962), are fantastic, both in terms of the soulful playing and the warm and full sound. I can't determine whether there was an original Lp called "Romantic Guitar", and if so, if it was a compilation Lp or recorded as an integral collection. The 'net doesn't have any good Bream discographies as of July 2007. But whatever the history of these recordings, they are worth acquiring.

Cooking with gusto!.......2000-03-01

This is a terrific collection of pieces covering a variety of styles but all the songs have distinct melodies which Bream brings to the front. Plus there's plenty of fast, machine gun fire passages which Bream plays with amazing clarity. Bream's style is bright, aggressive, and confident. A terrific performance.

Clear Recording.......2005-01-07

I recieved this Deutcshe Grammaphon CD for Christmas, and let me say I was impressed as much by Segovia still in his prime as I was the quality of the recording. Most of the pieces were recorded in the 1950's, however the quality of the recording would lead you to beleive it was recorded twenty years later. Though I would not place the quality of the recording as high as a currently recorded digital CD, it is incredible. This holds true for both discs, though the German recordings are better than the New York recordings. This CD shows a side of Segovia quite different from the recordings and performances years later. Segovia's interpretations are much less embellished and considerably more nimble. Honestly, I feel this is the recording that backs up the reviews of those who listened to Segovia years ago and do not feel the later recordings capture just how great he was. This recording towers over other similarly dated Segovia compilations. I strongly suggest it.
