Within the song cycle of innocence and experience that is Childish Things, James McMurtry continues to explore musical territory between rock and a hard place. The social commentary of the relentlessly bleak "We Can't Make It Here" and "Six-Year Drought" is more pointed than ever, while the arrangements throughout are as taut, muscular and slap-in-the-face direct as the songs. While the opening "See the Elephant," the title cut, and "Memorial Day" evoke a younger person's sense of wonder, the mortal lessons have plainly taken their toll by the closing "Holiday." Along the way, highlights range from the accordion-laced yearning of "Charlemagne's Home Town" to the Chuck Berry-style, guitar-driven rock of "The Old Part of Town" to a stirring duet with Joe Ely on "Old Slew Foot." With his terse, cut-to-the-bone artistry, McMurtry never wastes a word or a note. --Don McLeese

I love this CD by McMurtry. I'm not knowledgable enough to write a long review, only to say I am mesmerized by him and have ordered several of his other works since enjoying this one so much.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece - quite impressive.......2007-06-04

This is a masterwork. James McMurtry, with Childish Things, has created an album that won the Esky award for 2006 (an award for music that goes beyond the expected) and he beat out Neil Young last September when Childish Things and "We Can't Make It Here" won the Americana Music Awards for album and song of the year, respectively. That win put Neil's Living With War and Let's Impeach the President into second place!

Neil is my favorite popular artist - but James' album is truly as fine an album as one could want. See the Elephant, Childish Things and We Can't Make it Here Anymore are outstanding and everything else is excellent. A fine addition to any serious music lover's collection.

5 out of 5 stars You Owe It To Yourself To Hear This CD!.......2007-03-20

James McMurtry seems to me to be one of those artists that you either like or don't like...not much middle ground here. If you're already familiar with his music, and you like it, then you'll love this one. If you've never heard any of his music, then this one would be a great place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Redneck Intellectual With His Loss of Innocence and Faith.......2007-02-25

"When someone with as much writing talent as McMurtry takes up his pen to speak out on the state of things today, you know it's going to carry a tremendous amount of weight, as well as passion. McMurtry delivers a brilliant new disc filled with compassionate, heartfelt lyrics and strong, deeply rich melodies, answering the question I've long been asking, "Where are today's voices of outrage?" Here they are."
Kathy Coleman

James McMurtry is known for his song 'We Can't Make It Here', a protest song from the 2004 elections that shows "compassionate conservatism as a smokescreen for adding to the coffers of the rich, despite the detrimental impact that it has upon those who are less fortunate". It is sung with the cadence of a man who scorns those people and knows their dirty secrets. James grew up with dad; author Larry McMurtry, after his parents divorced. He picked up a guitar at the age of seven and never put it down. He credits 'Little Feat' and 'The Band' as early influences. He says as well that the "revelatory concerts courtesy of Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson" opened his eyes to the social fabric of the United States of which he sings. He plays guitar and sings with his group 'The Heartless Bastards'. This album depicts a man who like many of us, has come to face disappointment with the reality of life in these United States. The twelve songs on this CD flow effortlessly from one to another. Yet, each has its own story to tell.

'See The Elephant'-'I Want To See The Elephants', which is about a circus or travelin' show where a young man will get his first sexual experience. Along with the circus comes prostitutes and others, and the young men who see others they know visiting 'The Elephants, "Please Daddy Let Me Go To See The Elephants In The Travelin' Show.

'Childish Things"- he talks about childhood and a lost way of life that probably weren't all that his memories bring back. How to know when to put away childish things.

'We Can't make It Here'-as stated a 2004 protest song to the election and conservatism. It also talks about the decline of the American heartland. This song won "Best Song of Americana". Bernie Sanders of Vermont used this song as his theme song, and he won his Senate seat.

'Slew Foot'-he sings a duet with Joe Ely on this old standard.

'Bad Enough'-"Where have ya been, when ya gonna learn, when are you gonna give anything in return, when ya gonna act like you should" A relationship that is going nowhere.

"Memorial Day'-Off to Gramma's house on this holiday to remember our heroes. An excuse for relatives getting' together. 'Whuppins' for swearing and maybe a pie. "Memorial Day in America, this is how it's supposed to be.

'Old Part of Town'-trying to relive a favorite part of life and revisit the good times.

'Six Year Drought'- vivid portrait of a run-down town from the perspective of a drifter. "I'm just a visitor here, drought won't hurt me none.'

'Charlemagne's Home Town'- "I can hear your voice across the water- that's not near enough'

'Pocatello'-choppy rhythm that signifies a woman who is about to become temptation. "Batten down your hatches, I c and hear my gramma say, you like to play with matches, boy you goin to burn yourself someday."

'Holiday'-this song sums up the force of this CD- a family Thanksgiving road trip leads to an image of a middle-aged National Guardsman, sitting in an airport waiting to ship out to Iraq. "There's something inside that won't let us be," McMurtry sings. "And it's damn near as deadly as Texans on ice."

"Like most music critics, I have a long list of pet artists who remain criminally underexposed to the general public. Most of them I'm happy to keep to myself and the other music nudniks, but the persistent obscurity of James McMurtry nags at me like a sore tooth. Why isn't this guy famous, or at least critically revered on the same level as fellow maverick country-rockers like John Hiatt and Steve Earle and younger upstarts like Ryan Adams? He's American popular music's best lyricist since Dylan, and his chugging, elemental brand of roots rock, at its best, frames his words and world-weary voice so perfectly as to sound effortless, as if he and his band just coined all the chords on the spot. He's the Raymond Carver of singer-songwriters, an absolute master at unveiling complex truths with deceptively simple technique and a rigorous lack of pretense. In other words, there's no else like him in American music." Andy Herman

We learn from James McMurtry that we can get mad at each other for awhile and then we need to learn to laugh at ourselves. He sings with a conversational narrative like a long lost friend. We listen to his carefully worded lyrics and the mastery of his guitar. James McMurtry is an American experience that loosens up our reserve, and we want to protest right along with him. Highly Recommended. prisrob 2-24-07

Johnny Cash once called him "my favorite songwriter," and Waylon Jennings recorded nearly an entire album (Honky Tonk Heroes) of his material in 1973--lots of folks insist that was the first true "outlaw" record. Billy Joe Shaver, whose "Old Chunk of Coal," "Georgia on a Fast Train," and "Old Five and Dimers" rank as standards of Texas singer-songwriter lore, is closer to his 70th birthday than his 60th, but he still burns it down on stage, and he still lives the soulful, close-to-the-bone life of his impoverished, raggedy-ass youth. These days, it would be easy for the five-time Grammy nominee to lean on his woeful personal story--growing up picking cotton and dropping out of school in the eighth grade, then losing his wife, mother, and guitarist son, Eddy, in a matter of months at the turn of the millennium. Instead, he continues to challenge himself in his writing. This collection of his best-loved songs (it's erroneous to call them "hits") contains a driving live rendition of "Georgia" and two new offerings (the remarkable love song "Light a Candle for Me" and the tongue-in-cheek "Melody") as well as some lubricated on-stage preaching and storytelling. (It also reprises his unfortunate duet with Big & Rich on "Live Forever"... but let's pretend that never happened.) Shaver's singing remains an acquired taste, rivaling a rusty barn-door latch rattling in the wind. Yet in the age of Pro-Tooled prettiness, authenticity never sounded more welcome. --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars Original Mind.......2007-05-25

I really am enjoying Billy Joe's Greatest Hits CD. His lyrics are so original and have stood the test of time. As a performer, he doesn't fit the cookie cutter mold and that is refreshing...

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest songwriters. Ever........2007-04-13

Along with Kris Kristofferson, Shel Silversteen, and a small handful of others, Billy Joe Shaver influenced country songwriting forever. His honest, true-to-the-bone lyrics and rough and rowdy lifestyle (he was just recently involved in a shooting down in Texas) have made him the Poet Laureate for the down-trodden and ne'er-do-wells. GREATEST HITS compiles some of this legend's most provocative work, as only he could perform it.

Shaver's songs range from the patriotic enthusiasm of "Good Ol USA," to the whistfulness of "Melody," to the raucous delight of "Honk Tonk Heroes," to the beautifully poignant of "When Fallen Angels Fly." On the rowdy "Georgia on a Fast Train," he proudly sings of his eighth grade education; he may be sending the wrong message to the youth of today, but let's face it, we don't give a good god-darn. He's an old chunk of coal, who will one day be a diamond; he praises the hottest girl in town, who used to hang around with Heaven 'til she learned too much; he's tempted by a rose of a different name; he's an old five and dimer and still dang-proud of it. But, truthfully, we can sum up Billy Joe Shaver with one simple paraphrase of one of his most elegant songs: like the greatest that humanity has to offer, Billy Joe Shaver is gonna live forever.

I can't wait for another album. She is a fusion between Bluegrass and Country.

5 out of 5 stars Sung from the heart with character and soul.......2005-03-02

Playing Time - 50:48 -- Julie Lee sings with a vengeance. Her pure sweet tone makes for an unmistakable sound. Her enticing vocals and high fidelity acoustic country instrumentation with drums (on over half of the tracks) are very warm, partially as a result of live recording to analog tape. As a poet, Julie's messages relate her faith and life's experiences on this album dedicated to her family. The title cut mentions rumors of her moonshine-brewing great -grandfather. And the family's recipe for cornmeal bread is disclosed in "Made from Scratch," the only cut with a little banjo in the mix. Her more serious and impressionistic songs are some of the best singer/songwriter I've heard in some time. "Beautiful Night" speaks to friendship and the joys of singing, laughing on the porch. "Many Waters" ardently states that love is priceless and as "strong as death." Julie arranged that song directly from scripture (the Song of Solomon, Chapter 8). A tale of abandonment and a failure to admit an inevitable truth is the theme of "Til the Cows Come Home." A spiritually-tinged gospel message is found "He's my Man." "James" references the story of Cain and Abel to convey her sadness after James Byrd, Jr. was brutally killed in Texas by white racists. "Sojourner Truth"was inspired by a photo of a 19th century abolitionist and the Underground Railroad which carried slaves to freedom. The CD jacket includes all lyrics, as well as family photos dating back to the 1930s.

Certainly not bluegrass, Julie Lee's format is a fusion of contemporary folk, country and Americana sounds that always keep her personal and reflective thoughts out front. Her previous self-produced demo recordings have helped her land the support of Nashville's Compadre Records. Produced by Andy West and Mike Porter, the supporting cast includes thirteen excellent artists such as Alison Krauss, Vince Gill, Rob Ickes, Colin Linden, Larry Franklin, Tammy Rodgers, Jonathan Yudkin and others.

Originally from Maryland, Julie Lee has opened for Alison Krauss on numerous occasions. Of Irish and German descent, she grew up developing a personal appreciation for a simple rural lifestyle, history, old family memories, convictions and Christian values. While neither of her parents were musicians, her mother had an impressive record collection. Her influences range from Ella Fitzgerald and Carole King to Gillian Welch and Dolly Parton. At age 20, she took up guitar. With a fine arts degree, she ended up in Budapest, Hungary teaching English for two years. After returning to Maryland and working in a youth ministry, her muse took her to Nashville. Despite working at various jobs, she always stayed focused on her music. Befriending and opening for Alison Krauss were major turning points in Julie Lee's career. Her creative songs, pleasant vocals and professionally-produced presentation will build her a multitude of fans among those who simply appreciate roots music. Her feelings and beliefs are sung from the heart with character and soul. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

5 out of 5 stars The Balm of Gilead.......2005-01-12

The first time I heard Julie sing, that's what I thought...she is like the Balm of Gilead. There is an almost tangible warmth blooming from her wise and truthful poetry and her lovely honest voice. Still, don't think it's all lullaby here, there's the whole wide experience of human emotion going on: the dance-happy memories of "Stilllhouse Road", the deeply peaceful "Beautiful Night", the righteous anger for "James", the hopeful, longing romance of "Til the Cows Come Home."

5 out of 5 stars What bluegrass ought to sound like .......2004-12-16

A refreshing change: Real songs, real musicians playing real instruments, not this blow-dried airbrushed "perfect noise" that bypasses real emotion in favor of Nashville.

    Thanks, Julie, for making it!

    5 out of 5 stars A Musical Delight.......2004-11-05

Having heard so many good things about this album, I was almost hesitant to listen to it, afraid that the album would not live up to its praise. In spite of that and despite my own lack of familiarity with bluegrass, I was immediately drawn into this album. Julie Lee has an uncanny ability to captivate her listener from the very first note.

With its upbeat rhythms and lilting harmonies, the title track is a perfect opener to this album. The third track, Many Waters, is so simple, yet so profound, a poem akin to the Song of Songs. The melody in Made from Scratch is full of life, and the chord progression is exactly what I hoped it would be. It's a great, fun song.

Listening to Beautiful Night, I felt as though if I turned to the window, I would surely see snowflakes falling. In a few short minutes, Julie Lee manages to capture the stillness, peace, and hope of a winter night.
Each song on this album is driven by a strong vocals, insightful lyrics, and unparalleled musicianship. Julie Lee's poetry is like that of Frost, evoking stirring images from nature to point to something beyond that nature.

This album is a treasure. I suppose it is the first official bluegrass album in my catalogue, but I have no doubt that it will fare splendidly in the company of Blue, Nashville Skyline and The Ghost of Tom Joad. I am thrilled that my musical tastes have been expanded yet again.

The truth is that Suzy Bogguss, whose early music reflected her love of Western tunes and yodeling, never really fit into assembly-line Nashville. Rarely did her major-label producers allow her to reveal her true self. This time, she reveals nothing but that. Masterfully produced by Asleep at the Wheel's Ray Benson, she's at home with every tune, be it time-honored jazz chestnuts like Billie Holiday's "Comes Love" and Duke Ellington's "Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me" or fresh, witty contemporary numbers by Nashville jazz chanteuse-writer April Barrows. Benson, who duets with Bogguss on Barrows's "Cupid Shot Us Both with One Arrow," wisely avoids using a big band. Instead, he surrounds her with a small band of Asleep at the Wheel alumni--including pianist Floyd Domino and driving, Stuff Smith-inspired fiddler Jason Roberts--that provides a sharper, more deft accompaniment than any bigger band could. Liberated from Music Row's relentless pursuit of radio-friendly mediocrity, Bogguss has at last nailed it to the wall with this smart, elegant, and joyous effort. --Rich Kienzle

    5 out of 5 stars SUZY BOGGUSS.......2007-02-04

This is a big departure from her usual, really great, catchy tunes, though! The kind of music that will keep your feet tapping. Definitely worth the money!

    5 out of 5 stars A Swing and a Hit!.......2005-07-23

Darn good collection of swing music from one of the clearest, most versatile voices around. Suzy starts with the old Nat Cole standard "Straighten Up and Fly Right" and moves along with lesser-known numbers and several originals. The country/western swing element that Suzy and producer Ray Benson (Asleep at the Wheel) bring to the album is present but not overpowering. It's completely different from anything else she's ever done, but probably the best thing she's done for quite a while (her Christmas album is also outstanding). Certainly worth the price for any fan of Suzy or any fan of good ol' swing music.

4 out of 5 stars Stepping outside her zone.......2005-01-19

Suzy takes a step outside her usual zone of mellow pop country with this appropriately titled Swing album. The results are solidly listenable and exceptionately pleasant. Lacking in some of the harder edged messages of her country work, this album exudes a great deal of charm.

    4 out of 5 stars A treat.......2004-08-05

Suzy Bogguss has produced some pretty forgettable Nashville product in the past, so this comes as something of a surprise. Unlike a lot of pop singers who suddenly do a standards album, she is not overly respectful or intimidated by the material. She wisely kept the band small and although the arrangements are excellent with a Texas swing feel, they do not overpower or overshadow her. The vocals are delivered with warmth and a light-on-her-feet swing. A delight.

4 out of 5 stars Include my vote.......2004-01-28

The haunting songs of the late Townes Van Zandt combined searing honesty and tender melancholy in equal parts. The tortured Texas troubadour contributed a series of classic compositions (such as "Pancho & Lefty" and "If I Needed You") to the modern country repertoire, but his live work often crossed over into folk blues, especially in his early days in Houston. The newly discovered In the Beginning, recorded in Nashville in 1966 two years before the release of his debut, makes his blues affinity obvious while showcasing the unusual emotional maturity of his first efforts. His youthful voice is pure and strong, but the lyrics, permeated with his signature streak of fatalistic acceptance, are already deep and dark, as songs such as "When Your Dream Lovers Die" and "Hunger Child Blues" amply illustrate. These stripped-down demos are lean and enlightened, and when Townes proclaims in "Black Widow Blues" that he's "got the blues sewn into my jacket sleeve" there's no reason to doubt him. In addition, his overlooked flat-picking guitar work, modeled after one of his musical heroes, Houston blues legend Lightnin' Hopkins, provides an additional attraction. --Michael Point

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant collection of TVZ's earliest studio work.......2003-12-06

This collection of Van Zandt's first professional studio recordings provides a bittersweet opportunity to peer early into the artist's evolution. These 1966 demos, recorded two years before his official debut album, find Van Zandt in superb voice, flush with youthful clarity and strength, and devoid of the burnished ravages that time would eventually add. At the same time, his lyrics - at the age of 26 - are already laced with the fatalism and restlessness that would characterize his life's work.

These ten previously unreleased tracks are a pristine look at the result of Van Zandt's mid-60s woodshedding in Houston's clubs, rife with his folk, blues and country influences. The segue from the Hank Williams' styled wail of "Waitin' For the Day" to the percussive blues of "Black Jack Mama" shows how early Van Zandt could masterfully handle a range of material and moods. Most of these tracks are recorded solo, with Van Zandt's flat-picked guitar providing truly impressive accompaniment. The few band tracks, such as the opener, are driven arrangements of guitar, harmonica, drums and bass - the sort of rumbling electric-folk made popular on the West Coast by Country Joe & The Fish.

This is a must-have for Van Zandt fans, and an interesting introduction for the uninitiated: chronologically faithful to Van Zandt's development, but out-of-time with respect to the public disclosure of his career. Recording quality is excellent throughout, providing a very intimate experience. The tapes, having disappeared for over 35 years, retained their original vitality, and are reproduced crisply on this CD. This is a masterful collection of songs from a songwriter, who, retrospect tells us, was only at the beginning of his brilliant arc.

5 out of 5 stars Townes kicks ... from the Beginning to end........2003-07-21

What a breath of fresh air! Ten new songs from the Late Great TVZ.! Amazing that the genius showed even at the tender age of 22.
Thanks to Jeanene Van Zandt for searching out and finally finding and putting these recordings together!

    4 out of 5 stars A real miracle!.......2003-06-04

What a surprise, I was completely unaware of this release or the intention of releasing a cd from 1966 by Townes Van zandt. I never even heard that these songs existed.
These are 10 unknown songs by Townes Van Zandt, and don't be afraid of the word demos on it, except for a place were the voice fades a bit, these are very good recordings from the 60's, as good as they come. Most songs are only played with guitars, a few have a band.
The songwriting is as good as Van Zandt always is, his voice is fuller than what we heard in his later recordings and in some cases he sounds a bit like Rodney Crowell (he was roaming with him at the time in Nashville) and you can hear that Townes is still searching for his "grove".
This cd is highly recommended for Van Zandt fans, aren't we a bit tired of new releases with old songs? only "new" songs here, but I doubt that even someone listening to him for the first time through this cd will be disappointed.

    Thanks Jeanene and thanks Townes.

5 out of 5 stars In the beginning. Not nearly the end........2003-05-02

`In The Beginning' is truly a great album; a definite must-have for any fan of Townes. The album is aptly named, introducing for the first time demos of his early career, 2 years prior to his first album. It's still filled with the same compassionate, complex lyricism, and his sound transcends categorization of any music from that period. `Black Widow Blues,' `Gypsy Friday,' and `Maryetta's Song' are among my favorite songs. The recording is surprisingly good, and the packaging itself is attractive, with paintings and photographs of Townes in the booklet. This is good stuff. And I highly recommend it.

    5 out of 5 stars Laid Down With A Prayer & A Song.......2003-04-27

For longtime fans, this is essential. They're all originals. Some tunes might sound faintly reminiscent of later material, but each has a life of it's own. For beginners, REARVIEW MIRROR is the place to start. But for those who felt some of his albums occasionally suffered from dated overproduction, this is sure to please. Here the foundations are exposed. That's not to say this is some glorified bootleg. Though we're spared the production frills, these tracks were recorded live in the studio. In some cases, probably in one take.

The uncharacteristically aggressive opener, "Black Widow Blues" might take many longtime listeners by pleasant surprise. There aren't many recordings of Townes accompanied by full Rock backing. Like much on here, it's a lost gem.

The likes of "Maryetta's Song" rank up there with some of his most fragile, heartbreaking work. "Hunger Child Blues" goes to show the shadows were there from the start, with lines like,"Your battle's built on doom".

His Hank Williams influence has never been more apparent than on high & lonesome tunes like, "Waitin' For The Day" & "When Your Dream Lover's Die". As the closer, "Black Crow Blues" it's a bleak dirge in the classic Van Zandt style, delivered with startling intensity.

Throughout, Van Zandt's oft praised finger picking skills can be heard like never before. More so than on any record he later produced. Obviously, the bottle a this point was half full as opposed to chronically empty.

The fact that the gems herein never saw the light of day till now only makes this collection more precious for longtime fans. This is the sound of a talent in it's prime, confident in the sound of it's own unique voice. A big hand to Jeanne VZ & Jack Clements for rummaging through the attic. What a gift.

Fellow songwriters shower their love on Billy Joe Shaver throughout this concert recording from his 65th birthday bash in Austin. Whereas tribute albums typically feature a variety of performers interpreting the honoree's material, here, many of the Texas troubadours choose to play their own songs influenced by Shaver or ones the rough-hewn renegade specifically requested for the occasion. The birthday boy proves his own best interpreter, opening the album with a hard-charging rendition of "Georgia on a Fast Train" and closing with the raucous resilience of "Try and Try Again" (in which he deals with the death of his wife and his son) and the soulful transcendence of "Tramp on Your Street." The between-song patter highlights the proceedings, with the respect Shaver receives from peers such as Guy Clark and Jimmie Dale Gilmore (who brings tremulous heartbreak to Shaver's "Hearts-a-Bustin'") equaling the awe he elicits from younger troubadours such as Todd Snider and Jack Ingram. As Joe Ely suggests, no one has found "a way of combining the spiritual and the honky-tonk" quite like Billy Joe. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Must have for Billy Joe Shaver fans........2006-11-05

This is an excellent collection of Billy Joe's wonderful musical work done by him and some of his fans who happen to be outstanding performers in their own right. If you are not a Billy Joe Shaver fan, just listen and you will be.

    5 out of 5 stars A fitting tribute.......2005-12-01

I was there that night. The love for the man permeated the theater. Billy Joe has seen his share of hard times, but his faith in Jesus (even in these times when that seems to be a politically incorrect thing to say)and the love of his admiring fellow songwriters has gotten him through. The night after his son, Eddie, died (as Todd Snider, dropping his usual ironic stance so eloquently sings about in Waco Moon), Billy Joe was scheduled to play New Years Eve at Poodie's, a honky-tonk in Spicewood, Texas. Billy Joe was, understandably, devastated. His friend, Willie Nelson, himself a Spicewood resident, got Billy Joe on stage and the two just played songs for each other until three in the morning. No dry eyes in the house.

I tell you all of that to give you a littel backgrond on Waco Moon and to give you an idea on how highly Billy Joe is held as a Texas institution.

At the birthday celebration, stars and soon-to-be stars stood in line to sing Billy Joe's praises. It was one of the great musical nights of my life, and for those who missed it, at least you can get a feel for it through this excellent CD.

Kinky Friedman, who is running for Governor of Texas (and might win like a wrestler from Minnesota did, surprising everyone) has said that the day after his inauguration, he will install Billy Joe as the poet laureate of Texas. Listen to this CD, and you'll get an idea why.

Billy Joe will, indeed, Live Forever.

    5 out of 5 stars 10 stars if I could.......2005-08-04

Great, such a tribute for such a poet. There are none better than Billy Joe.

5 out of 5 stars A Tribute to Billy Joe is one of the best CDs out there.......2005-06-02

I cannot take this CD out of my player. I love the stories that Todd Snider, Jack Ingram, Joe Ely, Robert Earl Keen and all the others tell about their songwriting hero, Billy Joe Shaver. And the songs are incredible! I highly recommend this album!

4 out of 5 stars Pleasing blend of country, rock and alternapop.......2006-01-23

This Austin-based band's first release for Compadre (their third studio effort overall) finds a sweet spot between alt.country and alt.pop. With both roots and rock influences drawn from outside the mainstream, one is hesitant to saddle this with a "country-rock" tag on the off-chance it would indicate made-palatable-for-mainstream-radio crossover. But highly palatable it is, with plenty of first-spin melodic ear-appeal that should garner a fair share of Americana and college radio spins. The band's country basics reside more in the songs' folksy-directness than overt twang, with electric guitars on the mid-tempo numbers that range into propulsive power-pop. The album's ballads are mixed with alternapop, netting out to equal parts Connells, Replacements, Delevantes, and REM -- a mix that's apparently what singer/songwriter/guitarist Fred Andrews has long had in mind. Andrews' songs exhibit a streak of spiritual faith, including the messianic images of "Something to Believe In" and belief of "I'm Here." Snapshots of roadside flower sellers ("8 Roses") and high school nights of summer abandon ("Never Forget You") are nice additions to more typical songs of relationships that have been torn-up, traded-in, and on occasion, revived. The protective "This Time" and "Tonight" close the album with the sort of optimism that rolls winningly throughout this album. [©2006 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]

5 out of 5 stars Flaco Jimenez holds his place as the "Squeeze Box King".......2003-09-26

Flaco Jimenez has always been a pioneer in the world of Conjunto and Tejano music with his incredible musicianship and unique stylings .He is famous for blending the traditional Tex-Mex and Tejano style music by adding flavors of country and Rock and Roll guitar. This, together with his talking accordion, creates a new sound of music. Flaco's newest album "Squeeze Box King" , which he produced himself, is no different. There are very traditional sounding songs such as "En El Cielo No Hay Cervaza" which has a polka-like beat and a very strong accordion sound. Other tracks such as "La Rosa Negra" and "Soy Romantico" mix in more of a country flavored guitar sound with Flaco's traditional accordion sound. With such ingenious musical stylings it is no wonder that Flaco Jimenez has established himself as an icon in the world of Tex-Mex and Tejano music. I highly recommend this album to any Flaco fans or any one who is a fan of Tex-Mex and Tejano music.

5 out of 5 stars True Texas Flavor.......2005-02-27

We discovered Hayes Carll's music on XM Radio's "X Country" channel--it was his song "Highway 87." Had to get the CD! This album will not disappoint. Carll is a Houston native who spent several years living at Crystal Beach on the Bolivar peninsula in Galveston County. Lifelong residents of SE TX ourselves, we have traveled Highway 87 numerous times on the way to ride the Galveston ferry. Every song on here is good. This is true, genuine Southeast Texas music flavor. Big things are ahead for Hayes Carll.

5 out of 5 stars Great up and coming singer-songwriter.......2004-12-23

A little bit country, a little bit folk, a little bit rock'n'roll. If you're any bit familiar with the Texas singer-songwriter tradition, you'll find a fresh new voice in Hayes Carll. With hints of TownesVZ, Guy Clark, and Ray Wylie Hubbard, Hayes brings a youthful exhuberance while remaining matured beyond his years. In this CD you'll find a range of songs from introspective ballads to fun country rockers, all of them solid throughout. The sky's the limit with Hayes, and it all starts here.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant and Humorous Songwriter.......2002-10-22

Hayes Carll is a great new talent! His songs are unique, entertaining and thought-provoking. Hayes' lyrics will take you through a gamet of emotions about the serious side of life that he tempers liberally with his incredible sense of humor. I first heard him at Wunsche Bros. Cafe where he opened for Jimmy LaFave. I added his CD to my collection as have many of my friends. He is one of my favorite singer-songwriters.
