5 out of 5 stars Joaquin Rodrigo complete concertos sfor guitar & harp.......2007-01-22

If you like classical music, enjoy spanish guitar, you will love this. It is lighthearted, uplifting, & joyful to listen to.

4 out of 5 stars Marriner and Romeros unbeatable.......2003-02-11

These are probably the best recordings of the Rodrigo guitar concertos available. There is noticeable analog tape hiss in the background but this is a small price to pay for these excellent, classic recordings. The technical precision of Pepe Romero on the guitar along with the excellent performance of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and the equally good sound engineering is a rare treat. Rodrigo and the Romeros seem meant to go together so this CD set is a must have. It's unfortunate that an equally good recording of the Concierto Serenata is not included. The performance on the harp is disappointing. I am puzzled why Catherine Michel breaks into chords where Rodrigo wrote arpeggios. If this is artistic license it is a poor choice. The sound of the harp often fades behind the sound of the orchestra too. The entire recording seems poorly engineered. The orchestra sounds distant, as if it is poorly mixed or too few microphones were used. In the absence of a better performance, the Concierto Serenata would have best been left off the disc.

5 out of 5 stars 2'fer bargain.......2001-11-27

Wow!! Fantastic stuff that is highly recommended for classical music listeners old and new. Hats off to Phillips for collecting these songs by Spanish maestro Rodrigo and presenting them on two discs. Besides the more familiar fare like "Fantasia para un gentilhombre" and "Concierto de Arunjuez," which I never get tired of, there are various other conciertos that are so soothing and extremely relaxing. This is music to park your mind in tranquility bay with, a blissfull audio experience, orchestral nirvana for the classical music neophyte. The "Madrigal Concierto" is especially note worthy, the two guitars and orchestra are magical as they play in unison, elevating the listener to heights unknown and back. There are various performers on this disc and all are outstanding. The performance of Los Romeros on guitars and Catherine Michel plucking her heavenly harp are exceptional and simply perfect to my ears. These are all recordings from the 70's and early 80's but have been digitally remastered for a crystal clear sound. If you like the music of Joaquin Rodrigo you will love this compilation of 155 min+ of his best compositions at an incredibly low price.

5 out of 5 stars Inroduction to Rodrigo.......2001-07-28

I cannot compare these works with others by this composer because this was my first experience of him, but for the information of anyone else who is not familiar with Joaquin Rodrigo, I would describe him as a Spanish Aaron Copland in that they were contemporaries and they both incorporated national folk music into their compositions. It's difficult for me to imagine anyone of any age not enjoying these works.

5 out of 5 stars the best interpretation by the romeros.......2000-08-18

this cd are the best works for guitar by rodrigo, and the best interpretation by the romeros, especially Pepe Romero. His friendship with rodrigo was very important for the interpretation of the concierto de aranjuez and the concierto madrigal with his brother Angel. A great work and i am excited with this cd.

3 out of 5 stars Fine CD ,Lame DVD.......2007-01-28

I thought the sound quality on the cd was fine. But if you're buying this for the Concerto on the DVD you should know that half the time you won't be seeing the concerto. Yes, while the musicians play you will frequently be shown statues, fountains, gardens and other pretty images that have nothing to do with the music and take up way too much time on screen. That kind of thing might fine on a tourism video which you might or might not watch once, but watching the concerto performance would have been far more interesting.

3 out of 5 stars Great playing but recording is a bit weak.......2006-08-18

The Rodrigo Collection is a compilation of Rodrigo guitar concerti recordings from 1975 to 1979. The guitar playing is robust, aggressive and macho, but not nearly as sensitive and deep as efforts by Pepe and Angel during the last decade. Twenty some years of practice and performing makes a big difference!

Although the recording quality is decent, it is not nearly as full bodied as modern digital recordings by the Romero brothers. The midrange is thin and slightly bright and stereo imaging flat. It's not a great digitalization and remix of an analog recording. Lastly, the "Shadows and Light DVD" transfer from analog tape to DVD is terrible. If I didn't know I had put a DVD in the player I'd swear it was an old low rez video tape. Despite these warts, it's a must have for any diehard Rodrigo or Romero fan.

Here is a delightful combination CD and DVD with some of Rodrigo's most famous and lovely music. The DVD is especially touching and I got a new perspective on this unique composer and his music.

5 out of 5 stars Great multimedia.......2005-09-13

The first CD is very good, the sound of the concerts is great, but the DVD is another thing, it's great to see Pepe Romero in the Aranjuez Concert and the documentary about the late great master Joaquín Rodrigo touch me very deeply.
My only regret it's that you can only hear the Aranjuez Concert if you play the DVD and not in a CD player (car for example)

I listened to this disk twice before deciding to discard it due to extremely dull sound engineering.

5 out of 5 stars The Romeros are remarkable!.......2000-01-18

Rodrigo is probably best know for his Concerto de Aranjuez for solo guitar (which Pepe Romero has provided the definitive recording of), but he also wrote the magnificent Concerto Andaluz for four guitars and Concerto Madrigal for two guitars. The Madrigal is performed wonderfully by Pepe and Celin Romero. They share a strong musical bond and seem to feed musically off of each other throughout the concerto. The Andaluz is here in its definitive recording. It was recorded and premiered by the Romeros in the late 60's but Rodrigo later added a wonderful cadenza section to the second movement which adds to its great emotional and musical impact. All in all, a great CD that I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Batiz dirige obras de Rodrigo.......2005-11-15

expresa. En esta grabaccion el maestro Batiz dirige
tres orquestas:la Royal Philharmonic, London Symphony;
y Orquesta Sinfonica del Estado de Mexico. Los
unicos conciertos que aqui no aparecen son: Concierto
para una Fiesta, y Concierto como un Divertimento.
Una grabaccion de recomendaccion maxima...

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to Rodrigo!.......2004-02-11

I had much of this material on vinyl, and it's great to have these packaged on 4 full budget-priced CDs. The sound is quite acceptable, although a little bright, which was common for early digital recordings from the 80's. But, they're otherwise clear and full. There are better recordings of the guitar concertos (which is a crowded field), but they hold up fairly well - and are better than Batiz' rerecordings of the some of the guitar concertos he did some 10 years ago on ASV.
The other concertos are quite nice as well. Distinctively Rodrigo-esque!
Anyone interested in this set will want to invest in Batiz' more recent survey with his Mexican State Orchestra of Rodrigo works.
Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Blind Can Hear..........2003-02-13

This is an album dedicated to the works of one of the most prominent Spanish composers of the 20th Century. His music is luscious, melodic, with uncompromised energy and excitement. Rodrigo was blind and had a love affair with the Concerto form, and this is Batiz's dedication to the man and his many works in that form.

I too disagree with the reviewer who said the recording was muddy. I think it captures the music well, and all of the soloists come out as intended in the score. I think the balance and tone are wonderful. I hope that helps!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Rodrigo compendium........1999-09-20

This is great music, with great performances, on a very good recording. (I disagree with the other online reviewer--to me the soloists sound crisp and rich.)

2 out of 5 stars Rodrigo and Batiz deserve better than this,.......1998-10-30

As a long-time fan of Joaquin Rodrigo and a more recent fan of Enrique Batiz I eagerly looked forward to getting acquainted with some of Rodrigo's rarely heard pieces. Unfortunately thoses pieces will remain rarely heard due to the poor production quality of the CD. The sound was muddy and indistinct. Most of the tracks sound as if the microphone was under the stage. I had to strain to hear the guitar, harp, and flute soloists.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bravo!.......2005-09-12

For well over an hour(68:37), you can just get lost in this gorgeous, mesmerizing music. Three definitive works of Joaquín Rodrigo are included.

Narciso Yepes featured on guitar, with the Orquesta Sinfonica R.T.V. Espanola, conducted by Odon Alsono, perform the first two concertos. "Concierto de Aranjuez"(for Guitar and Orchestra) in three movements is joyous and wonderful. Allegro con spirito, is just that; a spirited and uplifting. The adagio of Aranjuez is probably the most familiar(also heard in an all brass rendition in the film "Brassed Off"), and is very pleasing to the ear, followed by the soft and caressing allegro gentile.

"Fantasía Para Un Gentilhombre" is done in 4 movements. It's an
intricate blend of Rodrigo's Spanish flavor with the Baroque sound of the 17th century composer, Gasper Sanz. This piece was, according to the pamphlet that accompanies this CD, commissioned by Andrés Segovia. The entire piece had me under it's spell.

And, perhaps the most beautiful of the three, is "Concierto Andaluz"(for Four Guitars) The three movements are Tiempo de Bolero, the adiagio, and Allegretto. The Academy of St Martin - in-the-Fields, conducted by Sir Neville Marrriner, perform, and as always make you feel the music to the depths of your soul.

The CD is a good quality and sounds great. The 10 tracks, are all a good length to lose yourself in. One short one( third movement of "Fantasía"), at 2:06 and the rest range from 5:00 to a hypnotizing 11:28(adagio for Aranjuez). Also included is a booklet that has some good biographical info on Rodrigo. I thought the entire album was very well done.

Recently, I had a chance to drive through part of this beautiful country of ours. This album took me through the gorgeous mountains of Nevada and Utah. It was the icing on the cake that added to the beauty of it all. On the way home, I couldnt help but replay it, as I watched the sun setting over the Colorado mountains. It is still one I still listen to often in the car and at home, and just let it cast it's spell.

Bravo!

enjoy.....Laurie

3 out of 5 stars Far from the best.......2005-09-06

Buying this album is not in your best interest. This is probably the worst recording of Aranjuez I've heard and I've heard many different versions. Narcisco Yepes's interpretation is amature. He especially butchers the cadenza in the second movement of Aranjuez. His performance of Fantasia para un Gentilhombre is uninspired. His technique is lame and the entire recording is just going through the motions. The only gem on this CD is Los Romeros' performance of Concierto Andaluz. It is very well done and the St. Martin in the Fields orchestra is much better than the Orquestra Simphonique that Yepes is playing with. I give this album three stars because it is simply not special at all. Buy a recording of Aranjuez by Isbin, P. Romero, Williams or Tennant. They are much better players and musicians. If you want Andaluz you can get another recording of the Romero's without having to hear Yepes' half-hearted interpretation.

5 out of 5 stars Rodrigo is magnificent!.......2005-08-31

I first discovered Rodrigo while living in New Orleans and hearing his Concerto Andalusia performed by the Louisiana Philharmonic. The guitar parts were performed by the famous Romeros, who also perform the guitar parts on this recording. Rodrigo's music has an uncanny ability to evoke feelings, sensations, and visualizations of rural Spain, as well as its romantic, and at times even medieval, past. Truly breathtaking. It is evident that this extraordinarily talented 20th century composer deeply loved his homeland.

5 out of 5 stars Grandes Grabaciones Historicas.......2003-04-21

Esta recopilacion de grabaciones
historicas de obras del compositor
espanol Joaquin Rodrigo(1901-1999),
Don Joaquin. Las Orquesta que aqui interpretan
estan entre las mejores del mundo.

5 out of 5 stars Concierto de Arajuez........2001-04-18

No creo que haya mucho que decir sobre esta magnifica obra, quien ame la guitarra y en especial la guitarra clasica esta obligado a tener este Concierto en su coleccion.

    4 out of 5 stars Flamenco!.......2004-05-21

First things first. Pepe Romero, of the famed "First Family of the Guitar," the Romeros, is an astoundingly good guitarist, and on this album he tackles the traditional flamenco repertoire with winning results. His guitar playing is superhuman in its fluidity and speed, yet he never sounds forced or mechanical. For the most part, he plays with the intense ragged intricacy required of this music, though in a few places his interpretations feel more classical than flamenco. However, I believe he recorded this in his teens, so some lapses in interpretation can be forgiven. He also proves himself very fluent in the classical guitar literature. Normally, these minor flaws would not warrant a full rating point deduction, and if I had never heard flamenco before I would be completely blown away by Romero, but I own a record by a guitarist (?) named Jose Greco, entitled "Tanzas Flamencas," which completely surpasses this recording. Greco seems to possess a more intuitive understanding of flamenco, and his music is certainly more emotionally expressive than Romero's, as well as exhibiting a much wider dynamic range. Either way, Romero does not disappoint, though Greco's LP is well worth seeking out.

    5 out of 5 stars Beyond entertaining!!.......2003-06-16

I play Flamenco guitar, and for anyone who knows flamenco - this IS flamenco! Fantastic! A MUST have! Anyone who doesn't know that, doesn't know music and passion - and specifically - flamenco.

    1 out of 5 stars Boring.......2001-09-02

Unfortuntely, this was one of my first encounters with the "flamenco guitar" and I have to say that it made me look away from flamenco for many years. I found it no more interesting than listening to a machine gun. Not until I heard Paco Peña several years later did I realize that not all flamenco had to be as boring as this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Pepe never ceases to astound!.......2000-03-23

Every time I put this cd in my machine I have to brace myself for the unbelievable energy that comes from the speakers. The control Pepe has over his rasgueados (flourish-like effect produced by the fingers of the right hand)and tremelos is by far the best I have ever heard. His flamenco playing makes you want to get out and learn the steps yourself just to see what he's projecting. The only place where the recording is "iffy" is his duet with his father. It's a little shaky but hardly noticeable, could even be the arrangement itself. The very last piece, a duet with his brother Angel, is my very favorite. Played with some kind of double-stinged instrument (like a twelve sting guitar but different somehow) is had a very thick, beautiful quality to it.
