The Sound But Not The Soul.......2001-06-04

I am a hard-core tango fan but have to say I find very little to like about this CD. I bought it on the strength of the line-up of musicians in El Quinteto Buenos Aires who are joined by the Royal Philatelic Orchestra conducted but the illustrious Ettore Stratta. With accomplished tango artists like Antonio Agri, Leopoldo Federico, Pablo Ziegler, Osvaldo Berlingieri and Hector Console at the nucleus, how could I go wrong? After all, Ziegler's Tango Romance with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra was a winner! Sadly, this isn't. The tango presented here is of the type one would expect to hear in an elevator. There is almost no passion and play is lackluster on nearly all cuts. The one exception is a fine rendition of the Ziegler composition Milonga En El Viento. They destroyed Cafetin de Buenos Aires! While this CD would be fine as background music in a corporate office, I can't see myself listening very often. Symphonic Tango may have the sound of tango, but it lacks the soul of tango.

Sweet & Warm..........1999-03-13

I love all the "Symphonic" series by Mr. Stratta who is ingenious in arranging music. I heard his music by some chance at a CD shop for the first time. The melody was so sweet and I asked a shopboy what the song was. The CD was "Symphonic Bolero" with nice cover art. Since then I've been a big fan of him. This CD is also one of my favorite. This always lets me be in a warm and happy mood. I'd like to recommend you to try his other albums. Good buy!

Excellent Tango Compilation.......1999-01-08

Will attract both hard-core tango fans and newcomers. It includes both classic pieces as well as a couple of Piazolla's best.

There is a nice mix of old and new "standards." The accompanying booklet has a brief, but authoritative history of the tango and the composers and performers on the cd. It really makes you want to dance but listening is OK too. Energizing and inspirational in its lushness.

Phillippe Cohen Solal clearly enjoys pushing boundaries, having already shown the dance music universe just how flexible a tango rhythm can be on Gotan Project's 2001 release La Revancha Del Tango. Inspiracion-Espiracion doesn't do anything new, exactly, but this sprawling mix of new tracks, remixes, guest DJs, Astor Piazzolla, and poetry readings doesn't lack for audaciousness. With a soulful mixer like Solal at the wheel, it's a pretty smooth ride; a reinterpretation of Chet Baker's "Round About Midnight" segues into the beat-driven "Confianzas" like a darkening sky giving way to moonlight. Downtempo master Peter Kruder shows up as well, to weave a little football commentary into his remix of "Triptico," while Solal returns the favor (but without the football) on "The Man" (from Kruder's Peace Orchestra release). Last but not least, check out the bonus CD, featuring a previously unreleased GP track and a video from longtime visual collaborator Prisca Lobjoy. -Matthew Cooke

The follow-up to their critically and commercially successful "La Revancha Del Tango" release of 2003 is a double CD remix featuring Chet Baker and Astor Piazzolla, along with Peter Kruder, Anti-Pop Consortium, and Calexico remixing Gotan Project songs. The second disc contains a brand new track and ten minute enhanced video. Gotan Project draws on the African roots of tango and takes inspiration from Argentinian folk and the urban intensity of Buenos Aires, with its melancholy, women, cocaine, and indestructible, immortal tango.

Not what I expected.......2006-06-02

I bought this CD because of La Revancha Del Tango and was disappointed. While I appreciate their desire to not make all their CD's sound the same, most of it was too different for my liking. I have never liked music that begins with talking and interviews, it sounds like someone held a tape player to the radio and walked away. I will give them one more chance though.

Unlistenable in places ..........2006-04-11

Following their superb album "Revancha Del Tango," I purchased this CD without listenenig to it. This one is a disappointment in several places, not the least of which is the ridiculous rap remix, "M.A.T.H." by Al-Shid (the quality of that one rhymes with his name). Why would these excellent musicians persume that someone who likes their tango remixes would necessarily like to listen to a rap remix? In any case, whereas the remainder of the CD is certainly not up to the quality of "Revancha Del Tango," it does shine in places, expecially their take on Chet Baker and "Triptico." Even their (yet again) re-remix of "Santa Maria" is an excellent addition to this collection. Nonetheless, if you're a fan of Gotan because of "Revancha Del Tango," take a pass on this one and have a listen instead to their follow up, "Lunatico." It's bound to be better.

Misinterpreted by most.......2005-05-11

"La Revancha Del Tango" is the blueprint to some of these tracks and I suggest you get them both. However, to truly appreciate this CD and the Gotan Project you must have some background in the early South American bohemian music derived from Europe and Africa (Tango, Milonga, Chacarera, etc).

It's amazing that they picked Chet Baker's version of "Round About Midnight" over it's original, but it's brilliant because it would not be as fitting otherwise. Mixing hardcore rap lyrics with classical tango has not been done by anyone else and to add some more creativity.. The bonus CD will have you moving.

I love this CD because I grew up lisening to Tango, I appreciate mastered rap and love Miles.

This album is absolutly out of this world; the mix of trip hop, jazz (the Chet Baker cover is beatiful), hip hop and, the main character, tango is just amazing. Imagine Astor, Anibal, the voices of the outskirts of Manhattan (were I've told the hip-hop was born) and Peter Kruder having a joyfull, solid, ethereal, fruitful conversation.
Just give it a listen...

Very disappointed.......2007-08-01

Cuco sings on only 3 tracks. We are fond of the music but bought the disc because it appeared to contain songs sung by him. We are still looking for recordings of Rancheras that are sung from the heart like Cuco does so well.

With the guitar of Antonio Bribiesca !! .......2007-06-17

What is missing on this CD cover is that the instrumentals here are done by the guitarist Antonio Bribiesca. Listen to the Cuco songs that Bribiesca does, such as the beautiful Anillo De Compromiso, No Soy Monedita De Oro, Anoche Estuve Llorando, Nuestro Gran Amor, etc. etc.

Cuco does sing a few songs here, Fallaste Corazon, Arrieros Somos, Si No Te Vas, and Que Si Te Quiero Juralo, but some other songs are performed by Chavela Vargas, and Alejandro Rivera.

If you have not heard of Antonio Bribiesca, locate him! The music of Cuco Sanchez by Bribiesca is just soothing and so pleasing to hear the guitar solos to these wonderful Cuco songs.

Again, Sony music did a great job. The sound is beautiful.

In this CD Cuco Sanchez manages to give musical form to that most difficult, sublime and often most painful of human emotions...love.

The music and the words on this recording will touch your heart. If you need to relax after a hard day's work, then this CD is for you. If you have ever known love, even if this love was not returned to you, then this CD is definitely for you. The CD is reasonably priced. The quality of the recording is very good. The songs are numerous and varied.

I listen to this CD very often, frequently with my entire family, struggling to translate to them the beautiful words I hear from Spanish to English.

If you are fond of Mexico and love its culture; if you understand Mexico's painful history and respect and admire the dignity of Mexico's people, then this recording is for you as well. Music is often the best ambassador a people have, and the most clear portrayal of the purity and nobility of its soul. Cuco Sanchez is among the very best of musical ambassadors for Mexico.

It will make you cry of joy.......2000-07-20

Jose Alfredo Jimenez might be the best composer from Mexico in general, but if what you want is music with true feeling, Cuco Sanchez is your best bet. He made a lot of classic rancheras, but his specialty is writting songs for those of us who have loved, have been loved, and/or have lost a loved one in this life. His music will make you cry, and laugh of joy. He is a master in bringing all those memories back. I truly recommend this album. My favorites are: Anillo de compromiso,Nuestro gran amor, Que si te quiero juralo, Fallaste corazon...Siempre hace....Just get it! you won't regret it. This is the type of CD that you won't shelf away.

Argentine Tango-European Style.......2003-04-17

After perusing the songlist, I bought this CD thinking it was a Piazzolla CD I had not heard because it is listed under Piazzolla and no other information is supplied about it. When I received it, I felt annoyance that the CD was not Piazzolla but merely contained some Piazzolla compositions interpreted by others.
No matter, El Tango En Mis Recuerdos is an excellent CD for either listening or dancing. There are no virtuoso performances here, just some smooth, solid, steady interpretations of popular tangos ranging from the days of the Guardia Vieja all the way up to Piazzolla. Alberto Negri-Divorne and his quintet offer a full hour of enjoyment to the tango enthusiast.
I've been playing this in my office for several days now. Particularly enjoyable are Negri-Divorne's renditions of 9 de Julio, Imperial, Sur, A Media Luz, and Lo Que Vendra.
I had not heard of this quintet before, but like its European styling of tango classics and certainly look forward to future releases. If you are looking for tango with a little bit different sound, then give this CD a shot. You won't be disappointed.

ORQUESTA "ARAGON"- Mambo Inspiracion.......2005-10-13

This is a priceless CD by Barcelona's "Tumbao Cuban Classics". It contains none other than Orquesta Aragon's very first, original recordings in Cuba for RCA Victor during the years 1953 through 1955. Orquesta Aragon's was led by lead violinist, composer, arranger and chorus singer, the late Rafael Lay,Sr.
Hard to find Orquesta Aragon early hits, like, Miguel Angel Pozo's "El Agua de Clavito", "Mambo Inspiracion", the early and original version of "Tres Lindas Cubanas" (1953) with a totally different musical arrangement than its later (1957) recorded version, also Felix Chappottin's "Mentiras Criollas", you will likely find yourself getting up from your chair to dance, Felix Molina's contagious "Mambo Sensacional", Rafael Lay's "Que Bien Estamos", "Vida Te Adoro" and blockbuster hits like Jose Fajardo's "Los Tamalitos de Olga", "Cero Codazos, Cero Cabezazos", "Lo Se Bien","Pare Cochero", "Baila Vicente", "Cuatro Vidas","Noche Azul", "Picando de Vicio", etc. make this compilation a must have for all Orquesta Aragon fans and Cuban music collectors. Singers Jose Chino Olmo from the Hermanos Palau Jazz Band and Fernando Alvarez then a chorus singer with the Beny More Jazz Band, were featured on chorus, starting in 1954. This album also features two flutists, Orquesta Aragon's original Rolando Lozano and Richard Egues who is featured on several tunes. Most of the tunes featured Aragon's original flutist, Rolando Lozano, although he is erroneously credited in this CD liners with only 6 of the album's recordings.
These recordings were remarkably well preserved. This classic CD also features a picture of this great orchestra at a time when it was starting to become popular in Cuba.
As I said this is an absolutely must have compilation for Aragon and Cuban music fans.
