Lo mejor del barroco latinoamericano.......2000-09-18

In this Dorian recording we hear music by Latin-American composers from South America(Colombia,Venezuela,Peru,and Bolivia) and one Portuguesse composer who worked in Puebla,Mexico....All music after track #10 are christmas carols of the period, two of these carols are anonymous... track #13 was composed by Juan Perez de Bocanegra in Peru, is a hymn in Quechua (The language of the Incas)....Tracks nos. 16,17 and 18 are by Gaspar Fernandes, the manuscript for most of this music were found in Puebla,Mexico...Track #16 is in one of many dialects found in the new world. Tracks nos. 17 and 18 are of a form of popular music at the time, known as 'negrito', this is music that was written for performance by African slaves, because they are in a "broken-down" Spanish, as it was spoken by the african slaves, all three of this villancicos are christmas carols, and I think that this practice was done to make easier the conversions of natives and Africans to christianity....So here in this recording we have a little of the very best of the baroque music in a new world.....The Camerata Renacentista de Caracas do a very good job and the instrumentation is wonderful... I still ask my self this quiestion at times:How much music is still hidden in monasteries an cathedrals in Latin-America???? How many composers might be there be that we still know nothing about them, or their music???????

Usually regarded as the Belgian ZAO, COS develops an European type of chamber-rock, built on onomatopeic vocals or sung in French or German. The band displays beautiful themes interwined with complex orchestrated rhythms. Its music evokes the Canterbury School (CARAVAN, HATFIELD AND THE NORTH...), the anguished and dark music of KING CRIMSON or QUIET SUN and Terje RYPDAL's atmospheric jazz-rock. Pascale SON uses her high-pitched voice, able to perform the most incredible modulations, and this allows her to become one of the best singers in that style. The leader Daniel SCHELL is a guitarist extraordinaire, and proves to develop ideas as original as Robert FRIPP's. The Musea CD reissues of "Postaeolian Train Robbery" (1974) and "Viva Boma" (1976) include several unreleased tracks. The bandÂ’s fourth album, "Pasiones" (1983), is a mini-opera based on the story of three soldiers during the Spanish Civil War. The lyrics are made of a mix between Spanish, French, English, German and Dutch. The music is a fine fusion of jazz, classic, rock and folk music, with top-notch instrumental work all around. The band uses complex arrangements and subtle instrumental combinations, with a great sense of humour and originality. This reissue includes more than 35 minutes of bonus music: a performance in Toulouse (France) in 1984, a rehearsal from 1981, and two tracks from the maxi-LP "Hôtel Atlantic" dated back from 1984. A great album !

Great performances, but not really the Toledo Summit..........2005-05-31

This recording presents a selection of late 15th and early 16th century music from the Habsburg courts, and also that of Ferdinand and Isabella in Spain. The programme is both well-contrasted - featuring works by La Rue, Penalosa and Josquin alongside lesser known composers - and expertly performed by the four vocal soloists of the Orlando Consort. The Cancionero pieces are amongst the best a cappella renditions of this repertory available.

Whether this recording accurately reflects the music heard during the Toledo Summit (Philip the Fair's ceremonial visit to Toledo, 1502) is a different matter altogether. Certainly, the performances of sacred music here seem unduly minimalist, particularly given Antoine de Lalaing's eyewitness account of 60-80 Spanish singers participating in the Mass sung in Toledo Cathedral on May 8th 1502. Furthermore, it is known that they were joined by (amongst others, eg Hans Nagel?) the distinguished German cornettist Augustin Schubinger; a comparable occasion in 1503 at Innsbruck (in the presence of Maximilian) described how the Mass was performed by the two chapels and 'the sackbuts of the King [of the Romans]' who 'played the Deo gratias and the Ite missa est, and the singers of monseigneur [Philip] sang the Offertory' (Martin Picker, 'The Chanson Albums of Marguerite of Austria', Berkeley, 1965, pp. 23-5). The music heard during the Toledo Summit must surely be seen in the context of such accounts. Similarly, the secular music presented on this recording was not always performed by just voices alone: other possibilities included an ensemble of 'bas' instruments, or 1 singer accompanied by lute and/or harp, and it seems reasonable to assume that a number of these performance practice traditions were exploited during an event as important as the Toledo Summit (for more on performance of Cancionero songs, see literature by Tess Knighton; also briefly discussed in my review of Gothic Voices, 'The Voice in the Garden').

In short, this recording can be highly recommended, both for the variety and beauty of the music and also for the superb performances, even if it is probably not representative of the original event.
