It would be very easy to dismiss the bilingual debut album from Olympic gold-medal winner and world-champion boxer Oscar De La Hoya as just another pretty-boy vanity project. After just a few spins, however, De La Hoya's sweet vocal stylings have you down for the count. From the beginning, the Los Angeles-born athlete (whose mother was a professional singer) bombards listeners with an irresistible love TKO. It helps that De La Hoya has recruited a team of pros to back him up, including producer Rudy Perez (Luis Miguel, Christina Aguilera) and ubiquitous love scribe Diane Warren, whose rousing "With These Hands" is a clever highlight. De La Hoya picks up the pace on "Para Amarte," which is anchored by Santana-esque guitar licks; and "Mi Amor" is a fiery effort straight out of Marc Anthony's catalog. The mostly Spanish album also features two English-language translations, including "Run to Me," the dewy-eyed first single that was originally recorded by the pre-disco Bee Gees. --Joey Guerra
And remember Just because he's a great boxer does not mean he can carry a tune
