What the hell IS that?!?!.......2007-07-16
Once I pressed play I knew this was a Maiden album. It sounded good but there was something off in the production. No worries. It was growing on me already. Then, something despicable occured. I immediatley thought that the guy I borrowed this disc from dubbed in some other vocal from who knows where. This could not be the new front man to Maiden. I looked over at my roomate and we started laughing. LAUGHING...AT MAIDEN. Becasue yes this is an Iron Maiden album because it clearly says that it is. WHAT THE HELL IS THAT COMING FROM MY SPEAKERS!!! This guy sucks. How could they have come to the decision of allowing this guy to be the new front man. Anybody could sing this bad. I SING THIS BAD!!! I quickly moved on to song after song and COULDN'T finish the album. But, I will say this...everytime one of these songs comes up on a live album where Bruce is singing them, THEY ROCK!!!
I fully respect the artists integrity to stand behind their work but for once can we get this re-issued with just the music...or better yet, bring Bruce in to lay down the vocals like they were meant to be. Iron Maiden is by far my favorite band and it hurts everytime I walk by their section in a music store and see this and 'Virtual XI'. By the way never even went as far as to borrow 'Virtual XI' from that said same guy. I will not put my ears through that again. The only reason my ears made it through is, like I said before, the music IS Maiden and IS good. Thank you to all involved in getting Bruce back. I got around to seeing 'A Matter of Life and Death' at Irvine Meadows and couldn't have been happier. IRON MAIDEN ROCKS!!! Can't wait for what's next.
Thankfully, their catalouge is so rich you can throw darts and hit on a better album everytime...because my catalogue of Maiden will not include these two empty headed animal food trough wipers.
Maiden continues legacy to the music world.......2007-06-26
11 years later, it's finally growing on me.......2007-04-26
Last month I re-purchased it on CD (I originally had it on cassette) mainly because my tape broke and I believe I had treated the album unfairly. A few more listens and Blaze Bayley's voice has grown on me a little better. I still do not believe he was a good choice to replace Bruce, and it's hard to believe that after auditioning hundreds of people that this was the best Maiden could do.
But I have enough distance now that I can evaluate the album without comparing Blaze to Bruce and hear the strengths and weaknesses more clearly. My dislikes of Blaze's voice (without comparing him to Bruce): he has a small, tight vibrato that comes and goes. His tone on longer notes sometimes has a nice clarity, and sometimes sounds forced and strained--and I'm not talking about when he purposely roughs up his voice, those parts sound just fine and work well. There's just not much consistency to his tone on his clean vocals. And the big issue: the man doesn't sing in tune. When he dips down in the melody he's often sharp, when he goes up he's often flat, and sometimes he'll sit on a pitch and lose the center of it. Sometimes when a singer does this it becomes part of the charm of a particular song, but this happens over a whole lot of the album and for Maiden is inexcusable.
The album also suffers from bloat and weak songwriting. One of the dislikes I had from Seventh Son that is carrying on is Maiden's habit of repeating sections of songs too much--for example bringing the introduction of a song back at the end for "closure" that does nothing to add to what the song has to say, and repeating melodic phrases and choruses verbatim too often. These things prolong the songs needlessly and cause boredom to set in. There are also some rather uninspired guitar riffs and bland melodies. The biggest offenders are the songs based on books/movies, which is a Maiden staple and is usually OK, but here the songs are quite poor--Lord of the Flies, Man on the Edge (Falling Down), and the worst--The Edge of Darkness (Apocalypse Now)--awful, awful attempt at putting the narrative from the movie verbatim to music.
Good songs: Sign of the Cross, The Aftermath, 2 A.M., The Unbeliever. The remainders are enjoyable enough to sit through.
I really like the overall darker tone the CD sets and it's a nice departure from the usual Maiden sound in that sense. Someday when I round out my collection and do a complete listen through from beginning to end, I'll still be able to listen to this one and find good things in it, but I'll never really like Blaze's voice, primarily for the intonation and tone issues he has.
great album, unfairly graded.......2007-04-06
It's a Solid Album, and Quite Enjoyable!.......2007-04-03
I didn't give it 5 stars because I think Bruce works better with the band, but it's not a bad album, not by a long shot. It's Maiden-worthy material.

7.5 hours of superb music at a most reasonable price........1999-12-24
You will get an idea of the different kinds of medieval music as well as the top groups and soloists working currently in the field.
When I got this set, my mother and I listened to all 7+ hours straight through. We then started buying CDs from the different performers we had to hear more from.
At twice the price, this would still be an excellent addition to any classical or medieval music collection, as well as the best introduction to medieval music around.

4.5, but it doesn't hurt to round.......2004-01-31
When you first put the cd in, you'll almost immediately notice that 80's flair that really makes this album the special album it is. Music should be fun, but also refreshing. This cd does both of those. Here's a selected breakdown:
"Being Nobody" - who can really hate this track? it has some great vocals from the across-the-pond group Liberty X and really sets the tone for the rest of the album. (4.5/5)
"You Used to Hold Me" - mellow, funky, winner (4.5/5)
"Walk on By" - okay here's where it gets kind of shady, song with a great beat but really REALLY lousy vocals (1/5)
"Lemon/Lime" - same vocalist from "walk on by" but the funky breakbeat groove of this track really makes the vocals tolerable (3.5/5)
"Finest Dream" - Definite party starter!! (5/5)
"You (better let me love you)" - Party continues with a guest spot from Tiga (this track is much better than tiga's much overated 'hot in herre') (5/5)
"Freak Like Me" - taking it back to the older school with a nice rework with the Sugababes (5/5)
MASH-UP, BOOTLEG, WHATEVER YOU CALL IT - GENIUS!.......2003-09-10

It is not the case. If you can get passed the fact that bruce is not there, this is a good album. not great or fantastic, but good. Wouldn't compare it to the big 5 but definately better than efforts from No prayer and fear of the dark. the sound is different and a lot darker than most maiden albums. Blaze's voice fits in with the dark mood set out on this album.
Best recommendation, keep an open mind, don't think it's seventh son part two, give it a chance and you'll appreciate the album.
fave songs, sign of the cross, man on the edge, judgement of heaven, fortunes of war, lord of the flies.

you are all fools (p.s. buy CD's by elegeion, they rule!).......2004-04-18
Give it a chance, people!.......2004-02-21
In the early nineties, Iron Maiden was faced with a huge problem. Their ever-so-great lead vocalist Bruce Dickinson had left the band to pursue his solo career. This left the once-great metal band without a vocalist. They needed to find a new vocalist, and fast - or risk disbanding. They recruited ex-Wolfsbane vocalist Blaze Bayley to record their next album. This would be their tenth album, so appropriately enough they called it The X Factor (X is the Roman Numeral for ten.) Is this album the piece of junk Maiden loyalists say it is, or is it an underrated masterpiece, like members of a small minority say? Read on for my review.
The first thing I should state about this album is that it sounds NOTHING like the Dickinson-era material that you've come to know and love the band for, nor does it sound anything like the band's early days with Paul Di'Anno. This is very "dark" metal, more of a black/death metal sound than the epic power rock-oriented material the band is best known for. Also, this album is NOT as bad as people say. Many Maiden fans couldn't accept the fact that the band was undergoing a change. IT'S CALLED TRYING SOME NEW, PEOPLE! The band starts this album with the extremely lengthy epic, Sign Of The Cross. Even people who aren't very big fans of the Blaze Bayley era praise this track, and why not? It's excellent. Another excellent track is Man On The Edge. The simplistic-yet-catchy chorus makes this an instant Maiden classic. The Aftermath is a song about soldiers and how they feel useless after the conflicts they have fought in have reached their end - a song many people can relate to. The slow-yet-heavy stylings of 2AM make it another one of the album's good tracks. Unfortunately, many of the tracks on the album end up sounding alike, and, of course, this sounds NOTHING like the Maiden fans love so very much. Overall this is probably the band's weakest album to date, but it is NOT nearly as bad as people say it is. To restate one of the most important points I am stressing in this review - GIVE THE ALBUM A CHANCE.
My final verdict is simple. Only buy this album if you're an Iron Maiden die-hard who can't live without owning every album., or if you're a fan of Wolfsbane or Blaze's recent solo efforts. As good as some songs are, many of them will fall flat by the standards of fans. Blaze's second and final album with Maiden, Virtual XI, is quite a bit better. If you only buy ONE of the Blaze-Maiden albums, get Virtual XI instead.
Dickenson is by far better.......2004-02-01

X Factor Outstanding Album !.......2003-08-20
go a step foward with this excellent album, musically superior
than all past albums, added some progresive and gloomy keyboards
Nikko saw that some of the difficult drumms that he been played
is Sign of the Cross, when I discover this album years ago I loved until this day. Some friends that are more involved into
another kind of music like prog. rock, jazz, etc. where amazed
when i show them "Blood on the World's Hand" the intro with
acoustic bass, and the treatment of rythms and drumms are some
of the best i ever hear from Maiden. And if you like the classic
Maiden Line you have excellent tunes like Lord of the flies and
Man on the edge.
This is withou doubt some of the best Maiden Albums, Blaze Bayley is an excellent vocal, different than Bruce, but he really kick's bum!.
Don't lisent the unfair and fool bad reviews of some people that
don't know about Music, all bands need to experiment different ways, need to explore other possibilities, even if a member don't
want to continue it doesn't mean that a band it's Over, Dickinson
is not Maiden!, as a matter of fact some tunes of Blaze's albums
are still played by Bruce in the Actual Line Up.
So do a favor for you're self and buy this album to start
this excellent dark and apocaliptic travel through the
excellent songs packed fully of advanced and outstanding music
skills.

Product Description
factor(x) combines pop, new wave, electronica, and metamorphic rock with a pinch of guerilla warefare. With a mixture of Kraftwerk and Brian Eno-influenced tracks, and sounds that have never before been heard, operation paperclip could only fit into one completely new genre: Metamorphic Rock."This is the age of artificial life form dreams," exclaims Kein in a robotic tone on "Push My Buttons." It is clear that something new has set foot on the musical world, something you may not be ready for.
Pi, Pythagoras, obtuse angles, remote controls and Alexander Graham Bell may not be typical topics in music today. But factor(x) is no typical band. Relying mostly on synthesizers, percussion and analog drum machines, factor(x) brings excitement to a music industry that desperately needs originality.
NNMaddox's wonderful production brings together the raw power of the band. He polishes a diamond in the rough to create the newest sensation in the 14mercy army, factor(x).
