5 out of 5 stars Point of Information.......2007-07-06

Folks, please read the recording data! This album does not present merely the "older Sills" of 1975. Tracks 10 to 13 were recorded in February 1961, when Sills was about three months shy of 32 years old. To hear her any younger on disc, you have to go to her splendid recording of *The Ballad of Baby Doe*, released in 1959. (If anyone knows of still earlier recordings, please holler!) So these 1961 tracks alone make the album priceless, especially since it offers vastly better sound than the slightly boomy acoustic of *Baby Doe*.

For me, the initial main attraction here was the Granados, and it was a hallelujah moment when I spotted this CD in the bins almost 10 years ago. While this disc represents the commercial first release of the *Goyescas* selections, they received limited issue around December 1963 on a holiday-bonus LP ("The Sound of Genius 1963") from the Columbia Record Club.

That LP was my introduction to Sills, and it made me fall in love with her voice. It was always a special treat to play her vocal track for those who had no idea it existed and watch their astonishment as Beverly's voice floated through sonic space like the very nightingale she sings about. It is simply some of the loveliest, most haunting singing I've ever heard. To get two additional tracks from the same recordings sessions -- especially "Estrellita" -- was an unexpected blessing.

So get this CD for the last three tracks, if nothing else (track 10 is purely orchestral). They capture Sills at a magical moment. Even if you like nothing else on the disc (and I think you'll like much more), you can claim these three special treasures for a mere pittance. How much more precious are they, now that she has gone on to sing, we pray, in other realms.

5 out of 5 stars Estrellita.......2006-12-07

The incomparable Beverly Sills beautifuly sings here a true bouquet of songs in French and Spanish. A pleasure to the ear.

Estrellita is not a Spanish song as claimed by some commentators, but a Mexican one, whose author is the late Manuel M. Ponce.

1 out of 5 stars Ugly.......2004-05-20

Sills screeching a mezzo-role? She already ruined belcanto with her puny, fake screeching!

5 out of 5 stars Carmen.......2004-04-26

She DID sing Michaela. And it's said that she also did Carmen. But if she did, she was completely miscast. She also did Aida, live-recording of her Aida is...interesting. Anyway, Sills rules in the French rep, esp. as Manon.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent disc.......2004-03-21

This is a fantastic disc and shows Beverly Sills at her interpretive best with zesty, go-for-broke vocalism that is truly wonderful to hear.

Sills DID sing Carmen. She sang it on tour in the 1950s.

5 out of 5 stars great performances of enjoyable pieces.......2006-03-11

David Russell is arguably the finest classical guitarist in the world, along with Manuel Barrueco and Paul Galbraith, and a few others. I have almost all Russell's CDs, and I enjoy them tremendously. Aire Latino is a collection of many of the best and most popular modern short pieces from Latin composers. Hearing his interpretation and flawless execution has rekindled my love for many of those pieces I once also played. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars It should have been earlier........2006-01-10

I mean the prize, of course. It's no doubt that David Russell is the best(not one of) when referring to 19th century(or style) music on classical guitar. In this album, every small piece is so attractive because of the romantic aspect in guitar, in
David. I own all the albums of David Russell. Although this one is not the best,it definitely deserve the prize, price and praize from guitar lovers from all over the world.

5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful, Sensitive, and Skillful.......2005-08-08

This is a great performance for the very versatile David Russell. His playing is thoughtful and expressive, but also sensitive and not overly extraverted. His use of rubato is excellent on most tracks, and his constant contrast of dynamics, as well as vibrato, give the pieces on this album real life and emotion.

I had been performing 5 of the tracks on this album when it came out, so I can attest to the difficulty of many of these pieces, especially all three movements of the Morel "Sonatina." I can also say that his performances of these is very true; I could hear no incorrect notes , with the exception of some added notes in the first movement of "Sonatina," which I have since adopted myself for my own performance. His expressive interpretation is likewise impeccable on these tracks.

This record would be a great purchase for anyone interested in classical guitar, whether they are just getting into the genre or already have a large collection, or anyone interested in Latin American art music.

5 out of 5 stars Transcendent Pleasure.......2005-04-26

Perfect! One will very rarely discover an album as finely constructed as this. The performer stands at the pinnacle of his profession, one who demonstrates mastery of the instrument and intimate understanding of the music. The selections are interesting, fresh and never boring. There is delight in the listening from beginning to end. Mr. Russell is quite simply astonishing as he unerringly takes the listener on a journey of unalloyed beauty. This is a disc you will relish again and again. If you love the guitar, you must have it.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful CD!.......2005-02-17

A wonderful, beautiful CD. The fact that the music is all inter-related creates a beautiful atmosphere while listening. I know enough to know that this type of artistic endeavor is a collaboration; so kudos to David Russell, producer Rosalind Ilett and engineer Thomas Knab! I understand that this team has worked on many of David Russell's amazing recordings.

This is Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Florez's first non-classical CD. He brings to the popular music of Latin America and Spain the same scrupulous musicianship, bright tone, and charm with which he approaches Donizetti and Rossini. Some of these songs are accompanied by full orchestra and some (such as "Ella" and "Mexico lindo y querido," for example) are with a shiny mariachi band, while a couple ("Fina stampa," "Bello Durmiente") have solo guitar as their backup. Florez has plenty of opportunity to show off his high notes--there are brilliant high Cs here and there--and his perfect vocal placement and portamento are most welcome. "Jurame," a sensual tango, is a fine example. While he can sing softly at times, Florez doesn't do quite enough with dynamics. A bit more variation would have been welcome, but he's very much in the spirit of this music. His "Granada" is stunning, and he gets the idiom of the "lounge music" numbers as well. His fans, and fans of music with this Latino tinge, will not be disappointed. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Done.......2006-06-05

I bought this CD on a whim while on a road trip this weekend and boy wasn't it a pleasant surprise. Juan Diego Florez brings an elegance and beauty of timbre that I have not really heard in this genre. His phrasing is impeccable and he avoids the histrionics that most tenor CD's of this type are littered with. Technically, he has always been a marvel, but this CD seems to have more heart, soul and an excellent sense of timing than any of his prior CD's (and I'm a Rossini and bel canto nut).Hope he makes more like this! Bravo!

4 out of 5 stars Unexpected and Old-Fashioned Latin Pop with a Gifted Florez in His Element.......2006-05-24

This is a splendid recording that represents blessed synchronicity between voice and material. The singer is Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Florez, and the repertoire here consists of popular early-to-mid-20th century Latin American and Spanish songs. Barely in his thirties, he produces a sweet, warm sound that combines effortlessly with a youthful vigor. Florez can also conquer impressive coloratura passages with superb breath control. All these attributes have served him well in bel canto roles, and now he uses the same technique in these romantic ballads and ranchero songs.

Pedro Elias Gutierrez's "Alma llanera" opens the disc with a flavorful, syncopated arrangement that would not sound out of place at the Tropicana nightclub in Havana, while the melancholy mariachi-style horns of Jose Alfredo Jimenez's "Ella" provides a nice Mexican atmosphere. There is a trio of songs by Maria Isabel Granda Larco from his native Peru all arranged impeccably by the singer himself - the openly romantic "La flor de la canela", the more somber "Bello durmiente" and best of all, the intimate-sounding "Fina estampa" with impressive fretwork by David Galvez. Florez dares to tackle the warhorses that are Agustin Lara's "Granada" and Ernesto Lecouna's "Siboney", and while he puts out the necessary stops, the songs are a bit too familiar to have full dramatic impact. The arrangement on "Siboney" especially gets a bit too bombastic with syrupy strings and pounding jungle drums.

Better are the decidedly old-fashioned "Princesita" with Daniel Binelli's tango-infused bandoneon (an accordion-like instrument) and Maria Grever's "Jurame", which sounds almost like a Mario Lanza operetta-style number from an MGM musical. My personal favorites come near the end of the recording - the tropically tinged ballad, Nilo Menendez and Adolfo Utrera's "Acquellos ojos verdes" and Chuco Monge's "Mexico lindo" with its dramatic tempo changes. With his stunning voice, Florez has such an affinity for this music that it is easy to overlook some of the overdone arrangements. This is a solid example of how a crossover recording can be done with the right blend of talent and music regardless of what genre we expect from a prodigious singer.

3 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing.......2006-05-22

I read the reviews on your site and hearing this album was just a bit disappointing. I exected much more. His rendition of this type of song doesn't hold a candle to Domingo's. Many of the songs seems lifeless and rather amateurish. He should stick to what he does best and leave stuff like this to Domingo. He is however much better than other opera singers who try to sing this repetoire.

5 out of 5 stars EXQUISITE.......2006-05-05

This recording is wonderfully exquisite. As an opera singer, I have sung these songs in recitals many times and listening to Juan has been like a master class. His technique is superb. His "En mi viejo San Juan" brought me great memories and got my eyes wet. This tenor has brought so much hope to belcanto and fine singing. Thank you very much, Juan. Best wishes and thousands of blessings.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2006-04-04

What a great album! Yes, this is how you do crossover!
This collection blows any other tenor's effort out of the water. I did not think that fully fledged operatic tenor could sing such swinging Latin music and sound so good. Domingo and his often tacky Broadway collections, and Carreras misguided attempts, it's all forgotten now. Florez is the new Mambo King.
I love all the songs, what incredible finds they are. There is only one rehashed song, the famous Granada, but Florez version is fantastic. I have to admit I do not love all of his opera singing, his quick vibratto works only intermittedly, and certainly he is very good in Rossini, but his Verdi is disappointing... not that it matters on this album. I did not know he started singing in the popular music field, but it certainly shows. Muchas gracias, Sr Florez for this fabulous gift, this Sentimiento Latino. Very cool and highly recommended.

This recording brings the music of great composers from Mexico,Brazil, and Argentina. The Huapango by Moncayo is played beautiful and a well performed solo for trumpet and trombone.Sensemaya is played with virtuosity."Estrllita" is the best known of all Mexican song here arrenged for strings is very charming. The "Trezinho do Caipira" by Villa-Lobos is performed here to great effect by the orchestra and its percussion section. The Obertura Festiva by Halfter is performed with grace.Galindo's "Sones Macriachi" is also a piece where a mariachi gorup is immitated also to great effect by the orchestra and I think that Mr.Galindo captured the spirit of Mexico very well here. Its a great recording.Thank you Naxos... Well done Mr. Batiz

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite Performance.......1999-08-03

Batiz does a magnificent job, especially with respect to Huapango. The orchestra is full and vibrant. As a brass player (trumpet), I listen especially close to this section of the orchestra. I must say that the brass met my expectations: they have great volume and lose neither control nor focus on fortissimo passages. All instruments with solo parts do an excellent job of finding a balance between projecting their sound and maintaining musicality. The trumpets in particular possess that "sizzling" or vibrating quality which characterizes the better players.

5 out of 5 stars A good showcase for Carlos.......2001-05-06

Carlos Ponce's self-titled album is an excellent example of contemporary Latin pop. The songs on this CD are an effective mix of different styles, and Carlos gives a fine performance on each selection. His voice is particularly appealing: masculine, but gentle, with a slightly rough edge. And I really liked his enunciation of the CD's Spanish lyrics.

The songs are a mix of fast-tempo songs and emotional ballads. Many of the songs have strong Latin flavorings. The first song, "Rezo," is a good pop song that makes effective use of female backup singers. "Recuerdo" has a sly, funky sound. The energetic "Morena" features prominent percussion and Latin guitar accents. Carlos performs the mellow ballad "Sera" with a gentle passion, and gets more dramatic on the next ballad, "Decir Adios." "Todo Por Tu Amor" is a fast-paced song with more of a rock sound. "Rezo Club Remix" is an interesting variation on the first song. Each of the other songs is also worth listening to.

Carlos Ponce demonstrates both versatility and enthusiasm on this CD. Fans of Latin music won't want to miss this one.

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER MULTI-TALENTED ARTIST FROM PUERTO RICO.......2001-04-18

Former model, actor and now, singer. Like Ricky Martin and Chayanne, this guy has it all going! (What are they feeding them over there?...:-)

This, his first CD had gone platinum in a matter of weeks and deservedly so. Terrific diversity in music. In it you'll find ballads like the sad "Decir Adios" (which, by the way, the video was beautiful to) and dance music such as "Morena" (Rumba), "Todo Por tu Amor" (Rock) and a salsafied-reggae killer track called "Busca Una Mujer" which is my favorite! The lyrics are charmingly funny and you will be dancing around the room when you crank this one up I promise you!

Note: Saw him perform at Madison Square Garden. Caray.

    5 out of 5 stars TRUELY UNBELIEVABE!.......2000-03-16

I have become a fan of Carlos Ponce. He has his own style. Good looks, but his voice even better. Good pop music, with a human touch. His songs/lyrics are moving and inspiring. Good rhythm and Latin energy. I'm happy that I bought this CD (actually, by chance). It's become my favorite along with his newer album "Todo lo que soy". Not recommended for dancer-lovers. But if you like romantic songs this one is definitely worth trying and I strongly recommend it.

    5 out of 5 stars Buenisimo!.......2000-01-07

I love this CD, he is a great singer, and good actor (not to mention HOT! ) My favorite songs Busco una Mujer and Rezo.

Puerto Rico-born, Miami-based actor-singer Carlos Ponce is the full multimedia package. Since 1997 he's been a show-stopping entertainer who packs them in on the road, and he's also appeared on the American TV show Beverly Hills 90210 and on several Spanish-language telenovas, or soap operas. This self-titled CD is Ponce's third recording as a leader. It features his torrid tenor backed by the award-winning production team of the Miami Sound Machine kingpins Emilio Estefan and Joel Someillan. With the techo-tropic sounds, Ponce soothes and grooves through songs of love and life, from "Canela," the zesty "Mujer con Pantalones" (which roughly translates as "Woman with Trousers"), and "Concebido sin Pecado," which also happens to be the title of popular Mexican soap opera he stars in. In audio or video, Carlos Ponce is the real deal. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

I agree, Carlos voice is not as harsh as his first cd. I do have to say though that I seemed to enjoy his older songs. Mujer con pantalones is a fun song on this cd. I'm trying to catch on to the other songs.

    5 out of 5 stars whew!.......2003-05-09

It has been interesting to follow the progression of the works of Carlos Ponce. I have to admit that I bought my first CD years ago because he looked so good on the cover, but the music turned out to thoroughly enjoyable fun music. They say that a man improves with age, and Carlos Ponce has. On Ponce, his third CD, his voice has gained nuance and depth. It ranges from a gravelly growl to an impassioned cry, and conveys emotions from intimate to angry, despair to playful. Chord progressions and arrangements have become more innovative than on his first CD's, perhaps under the influence of Emilio Estevan Jr. Songs have gone from Busco Una Mujer (Looking for a woman/Carlos Ponce 1998), to Mujer con Pantalones (Woman in Pants/Ponce 2002), and from Sigues Conmigo (Follow Me/Todo Lo Que Soy 1999) to Llevame Contigo (Take Me with You/Ponce 2002). Now understand that my Spanish is elementary at best (corrections welcome). Most of the lyrics go right over my head. But to my ear, he has gone from being a cute party boy in his first CD to more mature and thoughtful. That doesn't mean that there aren't fun songs (check out Pantalones again). My favorite song on the CD is the eighth, Quiero, romantic and playful. This doesn't mean that the earlier CD's aren't worth listening to. There's nothing on this CD like dance mix of Rezo. As an aside: interesting that he's named his third CD with his name (Ponce), as he did his first (Carlos Ponce). Could he be saying that he has reinvented himself?

    4 out of 5 stars Good job........2003-04-04

Carlos Ponce has only 3 albums but and each one of them have a good production. He works with one of the best producers in latin music industry (E. Estefan Jr.).
What is curious is that this album went actually nowhere, eventhough had a strong background with the series that Carlos was acting in and the theme was very good.
The first official single was a big hit in Latin America ("Mujer con pantalones"/"Woman with pants"). In the U.s reached #15. The song has good lyrics and the rhythm makes you feel like dancing.
I know very much about music and I collect cd's and I think that Carlos is one of the best male latin singers, he has a very good voice also. He's first 2 albums were very successful reaching Gold and Platinum status, he also had several #1 hits.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely an investment.......2002-06-07

I also agree that album is his best so far. He keeps working on his craft and keeps getting better with time. My favorite track is Concebido Sin Pecado, but all the songs are good. Since I got the album I haven't stopped listening to it.

5 out of 5 stars His best album........2003-04-10

I think that Carlos is one of the best latin singers and he's tree albums are very good (this is the second one). If you don't know about he's music, it's pop with some tropical ifluences. If you've heard from him and want to buy one of he's cd's I'd recommed this tittle.
The biggest hit of this album was the #3 "Escuchame" (listen to me) and has other hits like "Amiga sombra" (Shadow, my friend) and "Todo lo que soy" (all I am).
The career of Carlos in music has been very good. He's first album from 1998 won a Billboard award, topped the Latin Charts and had 2 #1 hits ("Rezo" and "Y recurdo"). In 1999 he released "Todo lo que soy" that was once again a hit reached #4 in the Latin Charts and had the hits that I've named.
He's latest album "Ponce" which was released in 2002 had only one official single "Mujer con pantalones" (Woman with pants).
Carlos has a good voice and he's rhythms are very good. I really recommed this singer.

4 out of 5 stars Melt Away with a Heartthrob.......2002-04-05

Fans of pure latin pop won;t be disappointed with Carlos Ponce's music, vocals or song selections. This is Latin pop at its best - a sterling collection of tracks that inspire the listener to dance, reflect and just - LISTEN. "Escuchame" is a tremendous song, where the singer begs to be heard. And "Me Muero" is another plea for love. In between, there are soft magical melodies and unadulterated songs of pure joy. A terrific addition to any Spanish (or english) language collection. Just listen and you'll see why.

4 out of 5 stars The Sexiness of Carlos Ponce.......2002-01-04

This Cd thrives on the sexiness of his voice and the melodies that follow in his songs. They may range from ballads to pop songs, but, all in all, it as a good CD to share with a special someone!

    5 out of 5 stars THE BEST!!!.......2001-11-22

This cd is great. I love all the songs in this album. Carlos Ponce is the best. It must be great to have a duet with my favorite singer Jessica Cristina is Carlos Ponce's next CD.

This is an exciting mixture of composers and orchestras. On the one hand, a rather wide selection of the most significant contemporary Mexican works, involving the traditional, the classical (notice the celebrated Chavez transcription of the Buxtehude Chaconne in E) and the more abstract. On the other hand, an interesting combination of two excellent British and Mexican orchestras, under the wise baton of Maestro Enrique Batiz.

    5 out of 5 stars superb playing.......2003-06-10

Naxos's "Guitar Laureate Series" is something special that all guitar enthusiasts should look into. My favorites in the series are Jason Vieaux's and Ana Vidovic's recitals, but Azabagic's runs a close third. What I like most about Azagabic's playing is the sense of command that he has over his guitar which allows him to place his personal stamp on these Spanish/Latin-flavored compositions. I think one would be hard pressed to find someone more technically capable than Denis, but at the same time he uses his spare energies and thoughts to add passion and feeling to all the pieces. I have a few other recordings of Torroba's "Sonatina", and prefer Azagabic's because of his passionate that is felt throughout. For me that is the difference between a recitalist and an artist in the true sense who claims ownership of whatever he or she is playing, yet still maintains the integrity and identity of the piece.
