One of the best collections of Torroba.......2007-06-27

I think this recording is very relaxed for the most part. He kind of breezes through these with speed and doesn't take enough time on some pieces but David Russell is the cleanest guitar player around and these recordings are flawless. He lets you hear every note. Burgalesa is an amazingly beautiful, melancholy piece which Sevogia loved. Montemayor is haunting and tremelo is exquisite. Alba de Tormes is a popular and beautiful piece which sounds great. Fandango is probably the most popular piece here which overwhelmingly captures the Spanish feeling and which Segovia recorded extremely well (probably the most famous recording of Fandango) on his "Favorite Spanish Encore" LP and Russell sounds great in this piece, too. I'd rather listen to Russell play these than Yepes, Segovia or the Romeros.

David Russell is one of the finest interpreter of Spanish guitar music. His interpretation of Torroba's music is one of the finest. David's performance of The sonatina in A major is very expressible, He plays the guitar with a lot of Heart and emotion, the recording he made of great Paraguayan composer Agustin Barrios Mangore is the best.

Good recording overall, a few issues.......2006-11-07

Probably one of the best things about this recording is that its a great collection of most of Torroba's great solo guitar music. Russell hits all the important pieces and plays them all with flair and accuracy. Russell's playing is very expressive and he tends to capture the esssence of the music. The playing is clean, beautiful and precise. Good tone, dynamic contrast, all the basics that guitar students spend years perfecting. However, Russell does play a little too heavy sometimes. I like to think that if Torroba were playing electric guitar today he would sound a lot like Pat Metheny with a little Spanish flavor. His music should never be too bombastic or heavy. Not to say that Russell never lightens up, but he doesn't always back off when he needs to. Some of the slower, more lyrical Castles of Spain especially aren't as effective as they could be. The other issue about this recording is that the track listing is WRONG! It should go like this:

Because of this glich in the track listing, all of the Castles of Spain tracks are off by one track as they are listed on the CD liner. It isn't even correct on David Russell's website.

The only other thing that I don't like about this CD is that some of the notes are a little weird. I know that there were differences between Torroba's original manuscript and Segovia's editions of the pieces, but some of the notes are either wrong or different from anything I've ever played from (and from what I remember that Segovia originally recorded). It's only a very minor detail as there may be some note decisions where Russell decided to preserve some original notations by Torroba, and I am always in favor of preserving the composer's original intentions over Segovia's rewrites if possible. It's not overly important, it's merely just a yellow flag to the guitarists out there saying that your edition may be slightly different from what Russell plays.

This is a great recording providing interesting contrast to Segovia's original Torroba recordings. While Segovia is the original "performance practice" version of these pieces, Russell's interpretations are for the most part very good. I would recommend listening to Segovia's recordings of Torroba as you would be cheating yourself to only listen to this recording.

Very good but not great.......2004-05-14

The reviewer "ivorx" has hit the essence of this performance right on. David needs to relax when the music calls for it. Torroba is not an intense composer and needs to flow in a more relaxed state. However, this is a very good CD of great guitar music by one of the guitar's greatest composers. I really wish more of Torroba's guitar concertos would be recorded by quality musicians.

A Guitar Lesson.......2003-10-28

Any serious student of classical guitar who wants to learn the music of Torroba and has unanswered questions about how to play these pieces needs this CD.

Merengue y un poco de bachata con sabor excelente.......2005-06-22

Lo que me cogio la atencion de este album fue el oir el timbal en una cancion de merengue. Al comprar el album encontre mucho que me gusto. Las voces de los diferentes integrantes del grupo suenan muy bien juntas y le dan una harmonia a las canciones. Ademas del mencionado timbal me di cuenta que varios de los merengues tenian un estilo de bajo y percusion que yo normalmente he asociado con musica colombiana, y unas guitarras que fueron integradas con mucha destreza.
Las dos bachatas, que mas se estan tocando por grupos merengueros, tienen un estilo que clasificaria parecido al de monchy y alexandra cuando canta monchy solo.
Todo eso crea un disco muy fresco y original, que han hecho de mi un fanatico.

Good Merengue Album.......2001-12-27

It is one of their best albums but it only has 5 songs. Two of those are remakes from the previous album. This album marks the return of Ronny Soler to the group after he left five years ago and made two solo albums. In all the songs the lead vocals are by him. The first three songs are the best in the album. Should of had at least 8 songs in this album.

Zafra Does it Again!.......2001-11-30

The leatest single release (included in this CD) of Zafra Negra "Que Bonito" is a definite bomba jam. Zafra Negra is one of the premier bomba (merengue) groups. They did it again the hole CD makes you feel good and shake your a.. off. If you are a bomba/merengue afficionado or dancer you will love this release.

First Album After a 3-Year Hiatus.......2002-01-11

This is Zafra Negra's first cd since 1997 with "Con El Machete En La Mano". The group sounds refreshed under July Heredia who has been in the group the longest. After going with the departure of Ronny Soler and other members and the death of another it seems that we would never hear from them again. The disc contains 11 songs, 10 merengues and 1 bachata. Some songs are upbeat but there are some sleepy songs too; 3 and 5, which are also included in the later album "Juntos De Nuevo" and album were Ronny Soler returns and takes the lead vocals for 5 songs. The best songs for this album are 1 and 10.

¡Con más que el machete en la mano!.......2001-03-22

Este disco de Zafra Negra es el mejor que he escuchado de este grupo en lo que va de ahora. Creo que el merengue de esta producción es golpeíto de punta a punta y va a poner a la gente a bailar sin lugar a dudas. No me sorprende porque su carrera ha sido muy exitosa y creo que ahora tiene pie firme en el mundo musical. Su producción de '98 es rica también y otros hits de Zafra Negra son: "lo que no conviene se deja" y "coqueta y sabrosa". ¡Que siga la Zafra con el machete en la mano!

La verdad que muy buen trabajo de zafra negra que siguen por el mismo camino como siempre excelentes!. Temas como : Tu fotografia,Ladrona de Amor Que no pare la Fiesta son ejemplos de como se debe hacer el merengue! no como otros que se venden y se pasan para el pop!. Con el machete en la mano! y te dije que tranquilo loco!

All of the music on this CD was composed while Mozart was in France in 1778. The city was bustling with good musicians and Mozart's hopes were high. In fact, not only did he have trouble finding steady work, it was at this time that his mother, who accompanied him, died from drinking tainted water. But the works recorded here, composed before her death, express nothing but beauty and enthusiasm, and each is unique. The elegant, dance filled Flute and Harp concerto, composed for a father and daughter, receives a vivid, highly graceful reading by Mara Galassi, harpist, and Susanne Kaiser, flautist. The Sinfonia Concertante for strings and four solo wind instruments is a piece with many textures and some very difficult horn passages, all of which are stunningly presented. The "Paris" Symphony (No. 31) is scored for a very large orchestra and has a type of grandeur associated with Haydn's late symphonies. It features trumpets and kettledrums to give it a festive feel. The performances under Gottfried van der Goltz, are crisp, clean, and filled with ear-opening surprises. The Freiburger Barockorchester is a truly superb period instrument ensemble and their attention to orchestral colors must have been just what Mozart wanted in Paris. --Robert Levine
