Customer Reviews:
A rarity..........2004-05-08
This one is a rarity in today's music world... a blues album that is diverse, creative, completely true to the music & is loaded with smokin' guitar work that somehow escapes the cliches. If you want the next Stevie Ray you are in the wrong place, but this one has feel to spare, even when reworking classic blues tunes. I sure dig it...
A New Voice for Old Music.......2004-04-07
I hadn't listened to James Blood Ulmer's music in a while, so I wasn't really sure what to expect. I was used to his freer, jazzier recordings such as Tales of Captain Black and No Wave. I was very pleasantly surprised by No Escape. This is Chicago blues at its finest, without the requisite B.B. King-style solos. Instead, Ulmer and his band bring their own voices to the music, without fundamentally changing the structure of the blues style. It shows that a creative artist can continue to be creative even with an old format.
Cosmic Roadhouse Blues.......2003-11-17
This is far and away James Blood Ulmer's best blues record to date, and it only further solidifies his 21st century re-invention as one of the blues most authentic voices. He's joined by a stellar cast of New York City players, including Vernon Reid, Charlie Burnham, David Barnes and Olu Dara. The first thing that comes to my mind is that this is what the band would sound like at a cosmic roadhouse (and you know there is such a thing). Saddled-up and belly to the bar on a Friday night would be Jack Kerouac, Ken Kesey, Jerry Garcia, Sun Ra, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Robert Johnson, Ernest Hemmingway, Billie Holiday, Janis Joplin, Rosetta Tharpe...and they'd all be hollerin', shouting out amens, tipping big and diggin' Ulmer's blues. Check out Jimmy Reed's "Goin' To New York," interpreted in 2003 jug band style or how about "Bright Lights, Big City," as a 'round midnight blues complete with a tap dancer and Olu Dara blowing that slow drawl Mississippi trumpet. You can envision the smoke hanging heavy in the air. Ulmer's own tunes "Are You Glad To Be In America" and "Satisfy" are brilliant, performed completely solo. Put these next to any other classic acoustic blues and tell me his approach isn't as authentic in its singular identity. What I'm trying to say is that he doesn't sound like Leadbelly, Son House or Lightnin' Hopkins, but he sounds like James Blood Ulmer. His sound is as pure and completely unique as any of the masters. It wasn't influenced by any of the aformentioned because Blood is one of those aformentioned. From the same land, the same headspace, the same values, the same struggle, but on his own individual journey and path. Other tunes like "Come On," "You Know, I Know" and "The Hustle Is On," swing in a loose, heady rockin' style that will get the room jumping. The two highlights that make this disc an absolutely essential recording for 2003 are "Ghetto Child" and "Trouble In Mind." Any description would fall short from doing them justice. All I'll say is buy the disc and dig for yourself. That there is the real deal. As deep, as soulful and as blue as the blues get! No Escape From the Blues for sure...
Christagau's review informs us.......2003-09-10
Vernon Reid's bid to turn Ulmer into the ranking 21st-century bluesman phase two... New York. .. Reid's banjo cakewalking away with "Goin' to New York".... the tap solo and Olu Dara cameo that break up the famed "Bright Lights, Big City," ...Jimmy Reed songs. Ulmer solos.

Blues extraordinary!.......2000-09-07
Anyone who has had the opportunity to see Bryan perform live will appreciate this studio album for it's incredible sound quality. The licks are the same, the commitment to the blues is the same, the showmanship is the same as his live performances. The mellow soulfulness of the Hammond B-3 sound combined with Bryan's guitar and vocals makes me shiver with his "preachin"! This CD is a must to complete any blues collection. Like New Orleans? Like Gumbo? You're gonna love this collection of Blues Gumbo! Especially the 3rd cut...."Can't Get Enough".
More straight-up blues.......2000-07-03
Most people you talk to have never heard of Bryan Lee, and it's a pity, as he's one of the true blues musicians out there today. His home base in New Orleans is the source for two great live recordings, and although his studio albums, including this one, are great, there really is nothing like seeing him live. It's a wonder he's going to be in my hometown this coming Friday, and I'm definitely going to check him out. I recommend everyone else do the same - chances to see authentic bluesmen like this don't come often. The CD itself is basically a continuum of his traditional blues performances, mixing in blues staples with new material

This girl has got a voice and a half!.......1999-09-22
First off, I feel kind of bad for giving this album only three stars..I gave it 3, instead of 5 because of my personal taste in musical style and lyrics. (Some of the songs were kind of tired like: "How Do I Tell My Little Sister?"..and "The Captain And The Lady". They were a little too back-woods-country-potunk for me.) But other selections like "His Love..,Talkin..,Find Your Baby Gone, and Boogie In The Middle" are some of the best complex blues vocals that I have heard in a long time. This woman has one of the greatest strongest voices that I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. I'de say good management is the only thing that's keeping this songbird from the big time. This CD is definately worth buying!

Good early-70s album with a handful of interesting live cuts.......2005-05-22
This Disques Black and Blue-album is the only one Koko Taylor recorded between leaving Chess and joining Bruce Iglauer's Alligator Records.
It contains a couple of re-recordings of old Chess singles, like "I Got What It Takes", "I'm A Little Mixed Up", and "Twenty-Nine Ways", five live recordings, and a number of songs not previously associated with Koko Taylor. Taylor's own "What Kind Of Man Is This" makes it debut on this album, a grinding mid-tempo blues and one of her best original songs, and she does well by Lillian Offitt's "Wonder Why" and the classic boogie "Big Boss Man", usually associated with Jimmy Reed.
This studio rendition of "Twenty-Nine Ways" doesn't quite match Taylor's Willie Dixon-produced Chess version, mostly because of a more "ordinary" and less charming arrangement, but the live version is very nice, and Taylor also interprets Preston Foster's "Got My Mojo Working" during the live portion of the disc, and performs a six-minute rendition of her R&B hit single "Wang Dang Doodle".
The band is top-notch, featuring Little Walter's 50s backing group The Aces (brothers Louis and Dave Myers on guitar and bass, and drummer extraordinaire Fred Below), in addition to guitarist Jimmy Rogers and pianist Willie Mabon, whose presence is a bonus all the way through.
This is not an absolutely necessary purchase...not as necessary as Taylor's classic Chess sides or the best of her Alligator sides, anyway. But there is a lot of good stuff here nevertheless, and fans will certainly want a listen. Just because some of this material is out there in even better versions doesn't mean that these 1973 recordings aren't head and shoulders above most other female blues singers' best efforts. And besides, this is the only place (other than the "various artists" box set "Chess Blues") to get the irresistable "What Kind Of Man Is This?".
3 3/4 stars. Definitely worth a listen.
A Blues Reviewer.......2005-01-18
This is a collectors item. This is when Koko wasn't with Chess or alligator records. she recorded this on Black and Blue. She really is a good team withJimmy Rogers Louis Myers Willie Mabon Dave Myers and Fred below.I would say if you want to jump and shout then pop this in your cd player. she isn't playing in this record and even does a live version of Wang Dang Doodle and a few other hits. all of her live music on this album was recorded in amstelveen, netherlands.
i'm a little mixed up..........2000-11-01
great time blues, and one f the best voices for it you'll find. hear her growl, and feel your knees give way to the beast of the blues...

Great Cd with a great sound.......2006-11-06
I first heard his cover of "House of the Rising Sun" on a blues station and loved it! So of course I had to hear the rest of the CD (so I bought it). He has some great somgs on this album with a fun sound. I definitely recommend it for people that like blues with a "perky" beat and sound.
Good Listening . . . Great Musician!.......2006-09-11
This is an amazing first-time CD by a very talented artist. Good voice; fastastic guitar; original music and arrangements; wonderful selections. I can't get enough of it and am buying two more CDs for relatives. I'd recommend this to anyone.
Phenomenal CD by an amazing musician.......2006-07-24
Where has this guy been? Tasteful guitar playing, great voice, great tunes. I can't wait to see this guy with his band live...hopefully he'll be at some of the major festivals soon.
I give this CD my absolute highest rating.
