1 out of 5 stars Where's all the Spanish Music?.......2007-01-04

Are you guys kidding me? Half of the movie's soundtrack is missing! "Mi Gente" by Hector Lavoe, "Che Che Cole" by Willie Colon, "Muneca" by Eddie Palmieri, "Vieja Luna" by Celia Cruz & Johnny Pacheco, "Abuelita" by Willie Colon & Hector Lavoe, "Alma con Alma" by Ray Barretto & Adalberto Santiago, "El Todopoderoso" by Hector Lavoe and the best song of the whole freaking movie: "Para los Rumberos" by Tito Puente. What happened? Whose pockets were not lined, who wasn't paid off? This soundtrack offering is a joke! Get the Mambo Kings soundtrack, if you want good latin stuff. They are lucky I gave them 1 star. I couldn't give this less.

5 out of 5 stars CORRECTIONS.......2006-09-17

I just want to be sure I let everyone interested in this soundtrack know that there are two corrections that need to be made. Pillow Talk is by Sylvia not Sinoa. Secondly, George McRae did Rock Your Baby-not Ed Terry. I'll be 28 tomorrow.

3 out of 5 stars Eurodance? I Wish!.......2007-06-29

At age 43, and with two politically-incorrect dance albums behind him ("Rice & Curry" and "Under The Kilt"), ex-country singer Jonny Jakobsen drops the guise of the nutty Dr. Bombay and Dr. MacDoo in trend of the equally-insane "Mexican Hero", "Carlito."

Jakobsen's trademark of parodying the ethnic characteristics of a nation in the guise of a dance artist has been more succesful than one might dare to think, with his Dr. Bombay-persona, in particular, receiving much air-time and publicity in Europe and countries eastward (even in India, where his antics reportedly had Indian officials threatening to sue him). Working his way to the western front, Jakobsen appeals to the exaggerated aspects of the Mexican people, donning a massive sombrero and a drooping mustache to present himself, ludicrously, as a partying, Latin lady-magnet.

All fine and good, concerning the image - but what with the music?

I'll admit that my scoring of this album was largely affected by my unfulfilled expectations regarding the musical content of the CD...then again, can you blame me for expecting more of the same style of music, considering that Dr. MacDoo's "Under The Kilt" was nearly identical to Dr. Bombay's "Rice & Curry"? - that brand of catchy, summer-based eurodance buffoonery that made you want to move your feet and sing along?

Dare I say it, Jakobsen actually takes a step back from his previous formula to create the songs of "Fiesta" (aka "Mexican Hero" in Japan): the up-tempo remains, but supplementing the electronic-based sequencing and percussion are honest-to-goodness guitars, playing stereotypical Latin 'riffs' and harmonies to Carlito's intentionally-silly vocal work and lyrics. If that formula isn't enough, add the voices of five accompanying ladies to sing his songs - they are featured on every single song on the album (in the interest of honesty, the entire album should've been credited as "Carlito feat. the Sunshine Girls", as was the first single off of "Fiesta"). Not that these ladies are bad (dance-based) singers, and not that they don't do their job well, but...are folks buying this album because they want Carlito, or because they want Carlito to share his songs with a femto of other singers?

Well, it worked well enough to get him over in Japan with his first "Fiesta" single, "Carlito (Who's That Boy?)" - why not for an entire album?

If Carlito's unique mixture of dance-pop and Latin guitarwork (played by dance-regular Anderz Wrethov) is your cup of tea, then no problem...but for fans of Jakobsen's Bombay and MacDoo personas, there simply isn't enough similarity between "Rice & Curry" and "Fiesta" - from musical composition to lyrics - to placate the usual sensation Jakobsen is able to create.

Simply summarized, "Fiesta" features too much participation from the Sunshine Girls and not enough catchiness of bridges to touch Jakobsen's previous work; the music itself is composed with a bit more creative detail, but hardly enough to feed the entire album on. Focal tracks (ones which Bombay and MacDoo fans should lean towards checking out) include "Carlito", "Alarma Caramba", "Vacaciones", and "Fiesta Night" (the last one only being available on the Japanese version of the album...which, luckily, is the only version Amazon.com lists at the moment) - the rest is arguably filler which, if played on any night in a dance club, nobody would remember.

Oh, but care to hear an actual Jakobsen ballad? (yes, you read correctly - a ballad) - check out "Adios Amigo (My Endless Love)."

      4 out of 5 stars awesome.......2000-08-02

The score begins and ends with a powerful elegy that encompasses the tragic aspect of this film. It's a string piece, very sad, reminds me of Barber's Adagio for Strings. Up until track 7, the score consists mostly of jazzy lounge music that evokes the seamy nightlife atmosphere that Carlito inhabits. There are also some very lyrical, romantic parts that underscore his love for Gayle. Starting with track 7, the tension builds, leading to a quote from the elegy. Track 8 is a very suspenseful, tight cue that underscores Sean Penn's character getting it between the ribs. Track 9 introduces an exciting ostinato as Penn's character is assassinated, and this ostinato is given a full blown treatment in the very explosive and thrilling cue, track 10, "Grand Central." It's an awesome, 10 minute long, action extravaganza that closely follows the momentum and shifts in tension as Carlito is chased through the subways into Chicago's Grand Central. The ostinato from track 9 is excitingly performed on low brass, while we are treated to a driving French horn triplet lick. The cue resolves with an outburst of brass-punctuated violence and a romantic flourish as Carlito nears his goal, before leading into tragedy and the accompanying elegy.

      5 out of 5 stars Patrick's Way.......2000-07-21

I was surprised when I read these two credits on the same poster: 'Music By Patrick Doyle' and 'Directed By Brian De Palma'. It's strange that a composer who worked on scores for movies based on Shakespeare's plays works with one of the most interesting -if not the best -directors of the latter half of the 20th century.

Yet the result is one of the most overwhelming and fantastic scores of the 90s. Patrick Doyle begins his composition with an elegy that conveys the tragic life of Carlito Brigante(Al Pacino). The romantic cues 'Carlito and Gail' and 'Where's My Cheesecake?' are truly a great treat from Doyle. Surprisingly, I wasn't expecting the spectacular chase music on 'Grand Central', a track that demonstrates the wide range of music that this British composer can produce. Of course he has written some action notes, but nothing like this one.

This is a remarkable piece of music. One of Patrick Doyle's best.

5 out of 5 stars Best Music Score.......1999-12-08

I think this is one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard. It almost makes you cry! A definate on the essential CD list.

5 out of 5 stars Great film. Great Soundtrack. Buy it. Love it!.......1999-10-06

If you have seen the film then you will know that its music speaks for its self. If you havent seen the film, well then your eyes & ears have missed a real treat! If there is a more powerfully moving sountrack availible, I've yet to hear it... (Platoon & Jaccobs ladder included)

5 out of 5 stars One of the most heartwrenching scores ever........1998-07-29

Patrick Doyle's score to the 1993 film Calito's Way is easily one of the most emotional scores composed. From the sweeping violins of the main theme to the ten-minute long "Grand Central" finale, this score toys with your emotions in the way only music can.

If you enjoy film scores, or are a fan of orchestral music, I cannot recommend this score enough. Like the film that it accompanies, and the book on which the film is based, this score has been cruelly over looked.

An undiscovered masterpiece - treat yourself.
