There's nothing new under the son on Autentico, Puerto Rican salsero Gilberto Santa Rosa's latest collection of hip-swiveling music. That's a good thing for fans of his graceful salsa style, which has made Santa Rosa a superstar throughout the Spanish-speaking world. He glides effortlessly through standouts "Sombra Loca," "Lo Que Arraso" and "Ensename a Vivir Sin Ti." Equally commendable is Autentico's first-rate instrumentation, a cool blend of trumpets and congas that nicely frame Santa Rosa's supple vocal work. As a bonus, Santa Rosa chose three traditional tracks--"El Son de la Madrugada, Sigue Ella Boba" and "Juan Manuel"--to close the album and honor his influences. Autentico isn't as innovative as Salsa Sinfonica, the singer's live symphonic disc recorded at Carnegie Hall, but it doesn't need to be. For once I agree with the Amazon reviewer - Gilberto Santa Rosa's new album is outstanding, and must be a shoe-in for a Grammy (but then I thought that about Marc Anthony's Libre.)

The whole album is a smoking hot Latin Jam, with some great salsa romantica for contrast. The arrangements are innovative, complex and exciting. The plena - Lo Que Arraso is my favorite, and things really let loose on the last three tracks.

I have always enjoyed Santa Rosa's singing, tho as is usually the case, some salsas are just more interesting than others. But Autentico is a coherent consistent piece of work of very high quality musicianship.

Autentico is a must-have for just about anyone into Latin Music. You should buy it now!

Great album.......2005-01-23

Gilberto says that this is his best album and one where he had the most influence. In it, he has his normal salsa romantica (which i'm not a big fan of) but also throws in a bolero and A PLENA !! Then at the end of the album the last three tracks are three old school hard hitting classic style Salsas that are amazing, especially #12 - excellent to dance to. This album is much better than his last and definitely worth purchasing. Highly recommended.

A must have. As a timba fan I'm glad to see Gilberto flirting on the timba edge. Throwing in some Giraldo Piloto,and Isaac Delgado songs does not hurt either.

Manny's Best album - absolutely wonderful.......2002-07-05

Manny Manuel is one of the best merengue singers ever, and this is his best album. It is the album that shows his greatest vocal range and style, the most irresistible songs, and perfecty polished arrangements and background vocals. There are 12 songs in all, including 2 salsas.

Manny has a voice you never tire of. He is alternatately mellow (Parece Mentira), bluesy (Payaso), playful (Y Lloras pro mi), naive (Mi Primier Beso), exuberant (quien vas a eganer), suave (Amor en el olvido), and on and on. Se va, Se va is a tour de force of vocal style. The two salsas are very noteworthy, proving he is not just a merengue singer. His expression and style are just amazing, he has one of the most naturally perfect voices I have ever heard, ideal for this kind of music.

The arrangements are just about letter perfect, the background vocals excellent and integral part of each song. Merengue is often consdired more "light weight" than salsa; but when you have material and perfomances like this, there is no need for the music to take a back seat to any other form.

Those who are familiar with Lleno de Vida already, but not this one, should really take a listen to this older CD. You will love this album.

Very good CD, one of Manny's best........1999-07-21

This album is great. A lot of people really slept on this album but this is a great piece of work. I've got to admit that it took me a little time to catch on with this cd but eventually I caught on and enjoyed the good music and beautiful lyrics this album offers. The two salsa that are in this album are very good. The lyrics are great and the production was on point. Most of the merengues are very good. Once again Ramon Orlando and Manny Manuel teamed up and came up with a very good song in "Lloras por mi", this song is very good to dance and the lyrics have meaning. This song is typical Ramon Orlando Through Manny's wonderful voice. Other songs which are very good are: "Mi Primer Beso", "Se Va Se Va", "Parece Mentira", "Si No Fui Yo", "Loba Feroz", "Payaso" and "A Quien VAs a Enganar". Overall this album is a must and believe me people if you haven't caught on with this album, don't waste anymore time and go out and get it, and if you have it and don't listen to it, get it out and play it and you'll see what I mean.

One of the best.......2002-09-26

One of the best recordings of Son Jalisciences ever made. In my opinion, it rivals the two Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan sones jaliscienses recordings made in th 1950s and 1960s("Sones de Jalisco" and "Mejor del Mundo"). Ausuncion Casillas' ("La Becerrra") vihuela can be heard very strongly in this recording. The guitarron player, Leon Espinoza is fantastic. He and Casillas make a great pair. Here Espinoza on "Los Arrieros." Miguel "El Trompetas" Martinez plays the trumpet solo on many of the recordings but also plays with the second trumpet on some. I think the second trumpet is "El Churpias" Jesus Cordoba. This shows how Mariachi Mexico established the two trumpet playing style. Check out Martinez on Camino Real de Colima. Pepe Gutierrez sings most of the songs. It a little different from the two-part harmonies we usually hear in this genre, but Gutierrez sings these songs so good that you'll with for a return of solo singing in this genre. The harmonies of the chorus are excellent. Take not some of the three-part harmonies in "Las Olas" and the harmonies of "Camino Real de Colima." The string are some of the strongest I've ever heard, much stronger than the Mariachi Vargas sones recording of the 1950s. You can hear Mariachi Mexico emphisis on the accents. Every mariachi violinist should listen to this recording to get a feel on what a third-part violin should sound like. Also, listen to "Los Arrieros" where Memo Quintero sings. Arrangement of this version have recently been recorded by Mariachi Cobre and Los Camperos de Nati Cano. I'm not sure who exactly is playing on this recording, but stemming from mariachi historian Jonathan D. Clark's interview with Leon Espinoza, I they are probably: Pepe Villa, Ernesto Villa, Eliseo Camarena (guitar), Rafael Quintero (violin), Miguel Martinez (trumpet), Asuncion Casillas (vihuela), Jesus Cordoba (trumpet), Leon Espinoza (Guitarron), Emilio Galvez (violin), Juan Cordoba (guitar), Rafael Cardenas (violin), Bonifacio Collazo (violin), and Jose Ramos (violin). Bonifacio Collazo was first violin, arranger, and the musical director.

The trouble with Mariachi Mexico is that there are few recording available today of their recordings they made in the 1950s. This one was done on Orfeon and their polkas and pasodobles album was on Musart. They also have another sones jalisienses album on Musart. n Clark's interview, Espinoza says the mariachi made many recordings on Columbia and today many of Columbia's recordings, in general, have not been re-released.

This cd captures the festive mood of mariachi music. A good varied selection of songs. Engineering is a little uneven, but just for pure entertainment this cd fills the bill.

Ibiza Bliss.......2001-04-19

Xtravaganza Recordings provides a very solid soundtrack of 1999 summer Ibiza. Alex Gold is a veteran DJ, who is also the main guy at Xtravaganza, and his talents for mixing warm tropical funk, with balearic trance anthems shines through beautifully here. Alex mixes CD1 with blissful hooks and makes it look easy. This is my favorite CD out of the two. Standout tracks are "Sing It Back", "Makes Me Love You", which are followed by some more smooth tracks. But the set begins to climax around track eight "Waiting for the Sun", then goes into ATB's "9PM Till I Come", then hits it's peak with Airscape's "L'esperanza", and Balearic Bill's "Destination Sunshine". The set ends nicely with ocean waves serving as the perfect background for the intro to Chicane's "Saltwater", which ends the set blissfully. CD2 is mixed by fellow Xtravaganza Artist Robbie Nelson, of Agnelli and Nelson. Robbie Nelson is the best, underrated DJ in the world. This guy is just as good as any superstar DJ you've ever heard. This CD is purely trance and is mixed perfectly. The track selection could be a bit better, but the mix is great, so this CD loses no points in my book. This CD starts out great with another Xtravaganza artist, Liquid, and their Ibiza smash "Orlando Dawn" in the Agnelli and Nelson Remix. This song, in this mix is unbelievable. It then goes into a very good trance mix that can only be described as smooth. You can't even tell where the songs mix into one another. Other standout tracks are "Let Me Be", "Not Over Yet"(Breeder Mix), "Everday"(Agnelli and Nelson), "Cream"(Blank and Jones), and "Xpander" by Sasha. All and all this is a fantastic mix, mixed superbly. If you like this, then I strongly recommend other Xtravaganza artist releases, and mixes. Definitely check out Ibiza Euphoria Vol. 2 (Xtravaganza). This was released summer of 2000, and in some ways serves as the follow up volume to this. It is mixed by the same two DJ's and is even better. But you should get both.
