The exclamation point is gone from the band's name and so too is much of the dizzy innocence that made this Melbourne quartet's Marvin the Album debut one of 1994's special finds. --Jeff Bateman

Like reliving a childhood!.......2007-07-19
That being said, there is a short piece in the CD's accompanying booklet by band member Nate Mendel, in which he writes, "This is I think the album we'll always be judged against. But, why?"
His answer is that the album is the most "lived in." I agree with that sentiment, and I'll elaborate my theories. Of all the Foo Fighter's works, TCATS has the most depth and range--it tackles issues like loss, relationship struggles, and feeling oppressed--in short, all the topics any angsty teen (as I most certainly was) has no trouble identifying with. Yet, at the same time, the album runs the gamut of emotions. There's the quiet angst of the opening track, 'Doll,' the dramatic reverence contained in 'My Hero,' the whimsical lightheartedness of 'See You,' and the full-out edge of rock tracks like 'Enough Space,' and 'Hey, Johnny Park!' It's as much a roller coaster ride as an album, and while no single song can stand on its own as well as later Foo works such as 'All My Life' or 'Learn to Fly,' every track is an integral part of the whole experience.
The addition of the six bonus tracks on this rerelease only adds to the experience--the four covers are all b-sides from the original album's singles, and the two additional tracks are planned tracks for the album that were left on the mixing room floor, so to speak. The title track, in particular is of note--it's the closest you'll hear Foo Fighters to sounding like Grohl's previous band, Nirvana, with all its fuzz, distortion, and beautiful disharmony.
All in all, it's a highly recommended purchase, whether you own the original or not--in addition to bonus tracks, the entire original album is remastered, and it sounds crisper and more energetic than ever.

Great album - Exta tracks just a bonus.......2007-07-14
This edition with bonus tracks doesn't really offer anything new, but only enhances an already excellent cd by conveniently gathering together the b-sides from this era. I wouldn't describe the b-sides as necessary for anyone other than the hardcore fans (though, if you don't already own this album, you might as well get this edition.)
For those new to the Foo Fighters, this is a great place to start, but don't let the "special edition" stuff fool you: the real greatness of this cd is the main album itself.
So glad I bought this!.......2007-07-13
Now I will be 100% honest. There Is Nothing Left To Lose is still my personal favorite cd. The Colour And The Shape is a very, very close second. Don't get me wrong. I love Colour, and some people like this album the best.
This cd however is still one of my favorite cd's of all time. My hero and everlong are just so perfect, not to mention see you and new way home.
The extra tracks are awesome. I don't like requiem and drive me wild. Never have. But the rest I love! Very great b side tracks.
If you are a border line fan and don't really have one of their cd's, get this one first. You will be blown away. And even if you have the original, this is definetly worth the buy.

Amazon.com essential recording
On this highly influential 1959 album, Ornette Coleman's unique writing style and idiosyncratic solo language forever changed the jazz landscape. On classics such as "Lonely Woman," "Congeniality," and "Focus on Sanity," Coleman used the tunes' moods and melodic contours, rather than their chords, as a basis for his improvisations. In so doing, he opened up jazz soloing immensely and ushered in new freedoms--both individually and collectively. Lest these innovations sound too dry or abstract, it must be noted that both Coleman and trumpeter Don Cherry play with a deep-felt emotion and joy that is as infectious today as it was then. This is truly an essential jazz recording, marking the end of one era, providing the blueprint for the next. --Wally ShoupCustomer Reviews:
Tremendous.......2007-08-01
The interesting thing about this album, other than the fact that the songs are so GOOD, is that it abandons traditional harmonic structure: no piano, for instance, which was downright revolutionary for the time. Not even John Coltrane, my favorite free jazz artist, dropped the piano. This isn't my favorite Ornette album (that's Free Jazz), but I really like it just the same. It's an essential jazz classic. Even Rolling Stone admits it in their woefully incomplete "500 greatest albums" book. Highly recommended.
A defining moment.......2007-02-22
The sound quality on this disc is superb. Coleman uses silence in a haunting way, shaping his music around its backdrop and occasionally using it as a centerpiece. This album is fresh and new every time you listen to it, the emotional effect being a soothing and calming one. Sure to become an instant favorite in anyone's collection, Ornette Coleman's "The Shape of Jazz to Come" will seldom find itself outside of your turntables.
Personnel: Ornette Coleman (alto saxophone), Don Cherry (cornet), Charlie Haden (bass) and Billy Higgins (drums).
Lonely Woman.......2006-05-20
Plastic Axe Attacks.......2006-04-18
In the late `50s, sporting a plastic alto sax and some wild new ideas, Coleman blew onto the scene and was quickly fed into the teeth of a whirring buzz saw. Jazz insiders disagreed about Ornette Coleman; some saw him as a deranged savage with no grounding in jazz traditions, others saw him as a grandstanding opportunist attempting to pass off bizarre behavior for avante garde music, and frightening the dogs in the process. Both groups agreed he should be burned at the stake. A smattering of advocates knew better than to speak up.
What's so funny is that 40 plus years later, everyone admits he's a giant of jazz and hugely influential, but nobody listens to him. (He's like PBS in this respect). Two things jump out. When he kicked the piano out of the ensemble, the chords, the musical foundation, went too. Heresy. Next, as good as Don Cherry is, Coleman put all the musical pressure on himself, his alto carries everything. This might be thought of as chutzpah or recklessness except that he really is that good.
The Shape Of Jazz To Come proves this beyond all debate. Though Coleman is considered "way out," this CD is thoroughly listenable and exquisitely beautiful. Coleman's abilities as a solo artist are absolutely stunning, in a class with giants like Coltrane, Parker, and Young. In later efforts, like the Stockholm recordings, he would venture even further off of Main Street, and at times the results are not mellifluous. It doesn't matter. Coleman is the real thing, a fearless originator, a prodigy, and a national treasure. He is like the film director Terry Gilliam in that even his failures are better than the successes of almost all his colleagues. With The Shape Of Jazz To Come, Ornette Coleman succeeds unequivocally.

A major criticism of the Foo Fighters' self-titled debut was its supposed lack of, you know, passion among the well-crafted songs and well-crafted rock. This time out, if it's wreckage you want, it's wreckage you get. The Colour & the Shape grows deeper the more it's played, with the band's ripping power more than matched by Dave Grohl's fascinating examinations of pain and divorce. There's even a convincing long slow ballad, "November Stars," whose intensity should win over doubters. If that doesn't work, then the screaming "My Hero" will. --Rickey WrightAlbum Description

The second best alternative band ever.......2004-09-18
This album is much more powerful and melodic than Daves first, now he has a band! Dave Grohl has now decided to be lead vocalist and rythem guitarist with Pat Smear, a person who used to tour with Nirvana on lead guitar and some other great musicians on rhythem. A songs that really stands out is 'November Stars' which in my opinion is the albums best song, mainly because its a ballad! I've really never heard a ballad from an alternative band before. Dave is one of the most talented musicians ever, like Alice Cooper said before me, quote "Dave... What a drummer and then he puts down the drum sticks and decides to be lead singer" unquote, that alone makes him great. This is probably the second best Foo album next to 'Theres nothing left to lose'. Buy it if you like Nirvana, grunge, late eighties\early ninties music, alternative or just rock in general.

Amazon.com's Best of 1998
If not the album of the year, it's at least the punk-rock album of the year, fiercely representing a musical ethos that has suffered the ignominious shame of commercial popularity. "We want the airwaves back!" shrieks singer (if you can use that word) Dennis, and over the course of The Shape of Punk to Come's 12 sonically stunning tracks, they reclaim the right to rage, rant, and innovate. The Refused broke up soon after recording this album, but they've left behind an invigorating manifesto. --Tod NelsonAmazon.com
It's a ballsy move to claim you're reinventing a musical genre that has been slogging along quite happily for more than two decades, but the Refused back up their chutzpah with an absolutely awe-inspiring and fearless slab of musical mayhem. The Shape of Punk to Come is nothing short of a punk-rock manifesto. Hardcore pathos is merely the foundation for their architecture: upon that they build an edifice of political expression with a take-no-prisoners approach to the search for artistic meaning and a musical liberation that includes elements of speedcore, free jazz, electronica, lo-fi, and absolutely no pop. Politics, art, and music merge into one monolithic whole. The disc starts with the spoken epigraph, "They told me that the classics never go out of style, but they do, they do," followed by a swirling mess of noise that finally jells into the last undiscovered thunderous riff of "Worms of the Senses/Faculties of the Skull." The song stutters, then speeds along, skips, pauses, then rolls. They follow that with the groovy Gang of Four metronomic punch of "Liberation Frequency." When vocalist Dennis sings, "We want the airwaves back" in a sweet falsetto that belies his ability to deliver a screech not unlike a bull alligator clearing its throat, you believe this band isn't going to gently rise up the Billboard charts; they'd rather storm the ramparts. Unfortunately, when the band writes a song called "The Refused Are Fuckin' Dead," they aren't kidding around: the band broke up before the release of Shape. Let's hope enough people hear this album to kick-start the revolution. --Tod NelsonCustomer Reviews:

Refused: Expressing themselves in loud and fashionable ways........2006-11-04
That being said, I am impressed. The album title is 100% apt, and it's rare for this to happen in punk. While many artists may sing about anti-conformity, several of the bands in the ilk sound similar, and then adding a guitar solo will sometimes be used to make the songs actually stand out. But Refused are a totally different kind of breed. They are kind of like Fugazi, they are punk rockers but they've got all the integrity and creativity that's beyond what some may predict it to be.
Out of all 12 of these songs, not one of these is weak. The awesome electronic instrumental "Brutist Pome #5" is even a highlight on here. The tracks flow in amazingly well and the whole thing was well-written. There is mostly yelling on the album, however, this is not too much of a bad thing, as Dennis also speaks and at times actually will sing, like on the excellent "Summerholidays vs. Punkroutine," a track about the idea of maybe going big. It contains the album's greatest line: "rather be forgotten than remembered for giving in," which in itself should've been seen as a kind of anthem.
Things kick off with speaking, and while it says how classics go out of style, I don't think this will ever be "out of style" for the underground. The lyrics on that track, "Worms of the Senses/Faculties of the Skull," are clearly anti-capitalist, and even though I am not really the most politically-minded, the lyrics are intellegent and that's what drives me to it. NOFX are boring compared to these guys, even if these guys aren't as humorous or anything. At the end of the track there is a "radio station" coming in with this "futuristic" electronic music in the background. That fades out and then you get into "Liberation Frequency," a track that is addictive on here. And throughout, there are ohter interesting moments, like the awesome rhythm section highlighted on the jazzy "Deadly Rhythm," the marching drums of "Protest Song '69," and better yet, the killer riff and memorable tune of my personal favorite, "Refused Are F***ing Dead." Later in the album there's even a bit of orchestral instruments, which is interesting to hear in this sort of album. It is musically interesting, and I wonder what took me so long to get this.
This chimerical bombination is something I confidentally call a favorite of mine, even though I haven't even owned it that long. It inspired me recently to buy "The EP Compilation" which I saw at a store (!) and I loved that one, too. I may even try out some (International) Noise Conspiracy. This is an album in which the greatness is the least questionable thing.
Better With Age.......2006-10-26
I bought this album when it was released, I was a bit hesitant... I was not a huge fan of the hardcore scene at the time (Earth Crisis, Strife). This album, was like a revelation.
So many people deride it claiming that better music is made today: I don't agree with that, but some people don't like Fugazi either.
Radical politics aside, the album takes many ideas of the 60s protest movement and pushed the limits of hardcore (at the time). Incorporating electronic beats, varied time signatures (jazz interludes, even), and technical guitar work to create something new. It really was new eight years ago, this band touched off thousands of imitators. It is sort of a Sandinsta/London Calling for a new generation Granted, there were other great hardcore bands (Snapcase and Converge come to mind), but Refused not only created a truly brilliant album, but they broke up and went on. Reminds me of ideas Legs McNeil talks about in "Please Kill Me" (mainly the notion that all the good bands break up at their peak). Real punk is futile and angry and basically Refused embodied it better than many of their imitators.
In or out of the context of history, the format of the album closely mirrors several 60s era jazz albums and the Nation of Ulysees political chanting is pretty consistent with the Dischord/DC style of hardcore: politics over prancing. This is something that is sorely lacking in the current generation of bands (eyeliner!). Denis Lyxzen continued that same meme in The International Noise Conspiracy (which eschewed technicality for garage rock ala the Stooges).
This is one of those albums that you really have to listen to and focus on the music (headphones).
In the same way that Jawbreaker touched off the hordes of psuedo-poppy screamers, you can hear the echos of The Shape of Punk to Come in everyone from DEP to Thursday. If you don't have this album, you should.
A Lesson in Punk...........2006-09-03
I think The Shape of Punk to come is one of the most creative albums I've ever heard. This is punk done perfect. Catchy lyrics, rife with what you would probably expect from a punk band. Its unfortuante that these guys broke up shortly after this album, because I would love to have heard what they might have come with next. Even tho the lead singer went onto the band, International Noise Conspiracy, while good, they don't match the intensity or have quite the same magic that made Refused so special. If your a fan of punk music, go get this now if you don't already have it. Its that good.

Production a bit too polished but a worthy release by the master..........2006-08-09
Not even the Beatles or the Stones or whoever have been able to go from relatively non-commercial hard rock (ie-Rainbow Rising) appealing to fans of heavy metal only, to appealing to a completely different segment of the American Adult Oriented (AOR) pop market, while at the same time adding bits and pieces of classical music along with it, to the tune of Beethoven. This is what Ritchie did with the band Rainbow. This was the last of the Turner era studio releases, and while it's not quite as good as "Straight Between the Eyes", it's still very good.
It is a bit too polished and poppy at times (very 80's sounding), which makes the songs seem a bit generic now. It is quite evident that Ritchie's guitar playing was taking a sideline to a certain degree, to the favoring of a strong melody and the smooth high voice of Joe Lynn Turner. This is typical of Ritchie's contrasting personality, while on the one hand he wants a top ten hit, of which he had several in the UK (and close to it in the U.S. with "Stone Cold" and "Street of Dreams") and then on the other hand, he doesn't want the spotlight for himself. His unwillingness to do interviews and his disappearances and constant line-up changes have made Rainbow one of the biggest "sleepers" of all time. How many times have I played a Rainbow song and someone says "that's awesome; who is it"? I say it's Rainbow and they reply "Who"? Unfortunate, but Ritchie is still laughing because he did what he set out to do. He found enough success, but effectively kept himself away from the media hounds and the trappings of personal limelight. The stellar tracks on this CD are: Stranded, Can't Let You Go, Street of Dreams (not really a rock song, but like a Michael Bolton song), and Fire Dance. Overall a bit overproduced with the guitar kind of buried in the mix, but a four star record, for sure.
What Rainbow management should do is re-release Japan Live 84, which is now an out-of-print VHS release. It should be released on CD. This is the last and likely the best concert that Rainbow played with Joe Lynn Turner on vocals. This epitomized what Ritchie had set out to do with the band

Rainbow's best Turner era album!.......2005-12-03
1.Stranded- 10/10 An excellent fast paced song with a great subtle riff at the beginning. This song has an excellent chorus where Joe Lynn Turner shows off his vocal power. The yells of "Stranded" are awesome too. A great solo by Blackmore who throws in some whammy bar dives and some cool fast lines. The ending of the song sounds great with the yells of "Stranded" and Blackmore's great riff. A great hard rocking classic.
2.Can't Let You Go- 10/10 This song starts out with a great scary organ intro similar to the Ozzy song Mr. Crowley. The riff is great too. The song is very melodic and Joe Lynn Turner's vocal performance is incredible. This is a very commercial song but it's still great. Blackmore's solo is excellent and has a lot of feeling. This song kind of reminds me of Journey actually.
3.Fool For The Night- 9/10 A great melodic rocker. This song has a catchy riff and great soaring vocals. The song has a nice fast tempo to it and excellent drum and bass work. Blackmore's solo is brilliant again and very lyrical.
4.Fire Dance- 9/10 A great fast paced melodic rocker with a great riff. The drumming is amazing too. The keyboard solo is incredible too and Blackmore's solo is as amazing. The trade off works very well in this song and Turner's vocals soar. Turner's amazing high pitched screams att he end remind me of classic Deep Purple. Another classic!
5.Anybody There- 10/10 A beautiful instrumental with some of Ritchie Blackmore's best playing ever. Blackmore plays some of the emotional guitar playing I've ever heard. The backround music is great too.
6.Desperate Heart- 9/10 A great melodic song with an excellent vocal performance from Joe Lynn Turner. The melodic riff is excellent and the drums are great. Blackmore's solo is brilliant again too.
7.Street of Dreams- 10/10 Another Rainbow classic. This starts off with a great melodic intro which a lot of keyboards. Joe Lynn Turner's vocals and lyrics are excellent too. The chorus is very strong and the drum and bass sound is great. Blackmore's solo has a lot of feeling and is very lyrical. This was one of Rainbow's biggest hits too. Blackmore's second solo has a lot of feeling too. This is one of the best songs on the album.
8.Drinking With the Devil- 9/10 A great fast paced rocker with an excellent riff. Turner's vocals are excellent and Blackmore's blazing solo is amazing. Very solid drum and bass work on this fast song.
9.Snowman- 9/10 A great instrumental with an excellent keyboard arrangement and great playing by Blackmore. Blackmore's playing is both emotional and technical. A great instrumental but maybe a little too long.
10.Make Your Move- 9/10 A good fast paced song with excellent drumming. More great high pitched screams by Joe Lynn Turner too. Turner's vocals soar and Blackmore's riff is great again. Blackmore's solo is excellent too.
If you like melodic rock, 80's music, great guitar playing or great singing than this album is for you. The band is
Joe Lynn Turner- Vocals
Ritchie Blackmore- Guitar
Chuck Burgi- Drums
Roger Glover- Bass, Percussion
David Rosenthal- Keyboards

Unbridled spiritual energy.......2005-01-01
Otherwise, it is pure joy to listen to. The singing is full of that same raw passion that makes it sound so primitive. I've heard other albums where the sound is polished, concert-hall like, and as a result very dead. This is not that way; it moves and stirs as good spiritual music ought to.
This is a new field of music for me, even though I've sung in church choirs for years and listened to all kinds of classical music. Hearing this album makes me want to go find the sheet music and start singing it myself, it is so infectious.

Album Description
Spirited new sounds from across the sea to the shores of the New Land. From the first colonists to the American Revolution and the birth of our republic Hesperus Early Music Ensemble's music reflects a time of new ideas, freedom and vitality. In town and village, parlor and ballroom, from the Appalachians to the great concert halls hear the musical pulse of early American music performed on a wide variety of folk and early music instruments. Includes: lively country-dance tunes, evocative Shape Note Hymns, old time Appalachian fiddle tunes, graceful European parlor music, French cotillions, divisions and improvisations. Introduction -The English Colonies in America were a patchwork-not just of territories whose boundaries became state lines, but of people from different places and classes with widely different values and experiences. This recording presents music from that patchwork; from England, the Colonial homeland; Scotland and Ireland, the homes of the largest groups of immigrants outside England; and France, the ally of the Patriots, and music written in the United States. More recordings by HESPERUS from Maggie's Music are Celtic Roots featuring Scottish fiddler, Bonnie Rideout and Early American Roots. Hesperus Ensemble is THE sought after musical group for period music that is both authentic, and most important fun, lively and spirited. They are frequent performers at the Smithsonian's Institute of American Music and can be heard on the soundtrack or the Paramount film with Johnny Depp entitled Sleepy Hollow! Excerpts from liner notes:2.A Set of English Country Dance Tunes: Maiden Lane, Jack O'Lent, Chestnut, Bonny Broom - The visionary London music publisher John Playford first published his English Dancing Master in 1651. It was reprinted 18 times over the next 77 years and is still popular today. 3. Parting Friends/Primrose - These tunes have come down to us in choral arrangements called shape-note hymns .Customer Reviews:

It was an incredible journey from the past that has stayed with me since, and every day I drive that one hour back and forth to work. This music has changed everything about the trips, and I can't wait for more.
Thanks to Amazon.com I was able to buy all three CD's, including "Early American Roots," "Colonial America" and the incredible "Celtic Roots" with the most beautiful violas imaginable.
Thank you Hesperus! Please play more!

There best work.......2007-02-26
Monkey Wrench is the best song Dave Grohl has ever written if you not heard it check out Daves scream at the end it's wild, great song really catchy chorus.
Hey Johnny Park, My hero, Everlong and Walking after you are also high points of the album.
There some neat guitar playing between Dave and then guitar player Pat Smear, some smart bass from Nate Mendall and of course Dave's drumming is always great althought William Goldsmith plays on a couple of tracks here.
Although not every song is great, this is still a damm good record they were defitnatly at their peak when they made this record. Give it a listen!

Now, a couple of years later, I know better. All those albums are not of that same quality I thought they were. Yet, after listening to TCATS again, it IS a wonderful piece of work. It's the only album of FF I would rate above 3.5 stars, and for a reason.
Try comparing all the albums. All of them miss the close to inteligent vibe which surrounds this album. Take "My Hero". Take "Everlong". Take "Monkey Wrench". Ok, I've picked the pure rocksongs. Take "My Poor Brain". I'll never forget the giant feeling of satisfaction I felt the first time the raw guitar noise at the start turned into the melodic riff supported by the air-like vocals of Grohl. As with most great albums, TCATS outclasses many others by having each song complement another. It's a whole, with variaty that lets you breathe for a second before going into the atmosphere of another class rock song.
This record stands far above anything FF made, it's like it's from a complete different band, a band who can make more out of a couple of notes. It's that intelligence that let the songs rise above a certain level. It's that bit that make the songs more than your average riff followed by a hook. It's that aspect that is lost in the other albums, it's that tiny thing that makes the big difference between 'ok' and 'wow, let me listen again'. If you were to own one FF album, you know what to do.
