Editorial Reviews

A cross between Alanis Morissette and Kylie Minogue, you couldn't engineer a more likely late '90s pop star than Natalie Imbrugila if you tried. Blessed with a stunning bone structure and a passable voice, Australian soap star Imbruglia and producer Phil Thornally turned Ednaswap's gritty "Torn" into a swirling pop confection. Nothing else on her debut quite matches it, in part because Left of the Middle hews closer to the center than it cares to admit. Imbruglia manages to touch on a wide range of female styles--angry ("One More Addiction"), electronica ("Big Mistake"), and yearning ("Smoke")--without leaving her fingerprints on any of them. --Steven Mirkin

4 out of 5 stars Classic? Perhaps........2007-01-14

While it is a good album, none of the songs are as great as Torn. But maybe it's because when I listen to Torn, it still feels the same as the first time I listened to it when I was 7 years old. I'm 17 now. Natalie's other albums are much better. I'd recommend White Lilies Island over this.

2 out of 5 stars Passable cover.......2006-08-12

Natalie's very pretty, and has a voice that doesn't grate. The problem is that the only compelling song on the album is a prettified pop version of Anne Preven's "Torn." As recorded by Anne with Ednaswap, Torn is a gut-wrenching masterpiece - and not even Natalie's handlers could remove all of the emotion from the song. Listen to Left of the Middle five or six times some night, call me in the morning, and I'll defy you to sing or hum any other piece on it. I'll stick with the original, thank you.

4 out of 5 stars Moody, but not annoying. Good stuff........2005-12-15

Natalie Imbruglia is one of those artists that invariably "requires repeated plays". I'll admit to never being a big fan of this kind of music, and it's to her credit that admist all the messages, she manages to get some pretty fine tracks in here.

If you're a fan of downtempo and fairly deep subject matter with a dash of poppiness, you're going to love this. Me, I was able to find enough positives to give it 4 stars.

Favorite tracks: Wishing I Was There, Intuition, One More Addiction, Smoke, City
Good tracks: Big Mistake, Leave Me Alone, Don't You Think, Impressed, Left of the Middle
Least favorite track: Pigeons and Crumbs

(Not touching Torn...the number of times it's been overplayed, there's no way in hell I can objectively judge it.)

5 out of 5 stars Better than some of the other reviews say,.......2005-12-13

Natalie Imbruglia released Left Of The Middle back 1998. It's 8 years now, but this album never lost it's touch. When I read the review that states that Torn is hopelessly outdated, that made me sad, because it is not. How else is it played on radio daily, today, 2005 (almost 2006 I might add)? And it's still selling good (both the single and the album)? Of course everybody is entitled to their opinion. I just felt like I needed to clear that out of the way.

Torn is a magicial song and it's worth buying the album for [or the single]. After hearing this one on the radio for many years, I still love it's dreamy tune , with the guitar making the same sad sound on the background over and over again. Natalie's soft voice leads you through the verses, and it's powered up at the chorus. The ending of the song is also very nicely done, makes you wanna listen to it all over again.

This album has it's highlights, besides torn, which is probably the catchiest and to some the best track on the album (and one of the best songs in the history of music).

At first listen, Torn, Big Mistake, Wishing I was there and Leave me alone will probably appeal most.
After a few more listens, you will find Smoke, Pigeons and crumbs, Left Of The Middle and city are equally good.

Some of these songs just never ever lose their touch. Sometimes I get tired of tracks such as Smoke, and I think: what was so great about it? But when I haven't heard it for a while and I hear it I remember what was so great about it [same goes for a lot of other tracks].

This truly is a great album that deserves to be heard by those who haven't. I own a lot of CD's, but I played this one most out of all of them.

3 out of 5 stars I loved Natalie..........2005-11-02

...I really did, yet after still listening to this CD for years now, I accept that she really didn't have anything any greater then anyone else. She's good, yes, and she's got the sweet "Girl-next-door" sort of feel to her lyrics and tone of her songs, but she's definately not the best out there.

Some songs, though, will never leave my heart. Aside from Torn, it was always "Smoke" and "Impressed" that left me in awe.

Impressed was a blunt hit over the head. With a fun bass beat and plenty of interesting lyrics, ("Changing your body like you change your jeans, nothing's ever as it seems", "Stealing your look from a magazine, playing the part from a movie scene"), it'll make you want to listen to it over and over again until you know the words and can sing to them with the same conviction as Natalie.

Smoke was probably the most moody track on the album, but certainly not overboard. Imbruglia sings some of her more heart-wrenching lines, ("Try - bleeding is believing, I used to", "You're hiding underneath the smoke in the room"), and somewhere along the way, everyone finds they can relate.

Like I said, Natalie is good and I loved her, but she's not the best you can find. Maybe borrow the album from a friend and see if you care for it, but it's not in my top favorites.

5 out of 5 stars One to listen to over and over again.......2007-05-30

Recomended 100%!!!
Bought this in cassette form when it was recently released - now have it on cd and on my compter to listen to at all times. A pop style mix, this is the type of music you want to listen to when you are in almost any mood! "Torn" is perfect for breakups, "smoke" for relaxing, etc. You just can`t help but memorize the lyrics and sing along out loud!
One of the very few cd`s I have been holding onto and listening to over and over again for years...!!! (another great cd is milla jovovich`s "the divine comedy")

4 out of 5 stars Wishing I Was There..........2006-07-27

"I want you to love me
but you don't want to love me
I'm losing patience now
Oh leave me alone
Stop asking for more"
~Leave Me Alone

"Torn" is the song you hear on the radio constantly and is only a brief introduction to the musical talents of Natalie Imbruglia. In fact, her White Lilies Island album songs should be on the radio more. The rest of her songs seem much more edgy and beautiful than the hit playing daily.

Leave Me Alone has interesting nostalgic and electronic moments. It seems to skip through time periods and countries. Wishing I Was There moves from sweet and sensual to sexy and sometimes mischievous and then cold and independent. All her emotions are on display.

Natalie Imbruglia's music seems like the music
you listen to when you want to be alone and dip into
contemplation.

"Don't say you love me
Don't say you need me
I really don't think that's fair."

          Album Description

Natalie Imbruglia stormed across the globe late in the 1990s with her amazing pop single Torn. And then came the album! Left of the Middle was not only hugely popular (and still is!) but was greeted with critical acclaim, too. Not bad for a lass from New South Wales' Central Coast ..... and talk about shedding that soap-star image?! Slick production and a gritty edge help this album stand out from the usual pop pack. This version of the album includes five bonus tracks, 'Tomorrow Morning', 'Something Better', 'Frightened Child', 'Diving In The Deep End' and 'City' (Live In Barcelona). BMG. 1999

            4 out of 5 stars breathe taking.......2001-01-10

Natalie Imbruglia is quite simply one of the most amazing artists ever to grace this earth. The album left of the middle is an exceptionally good one. The excellent music combined with mesmerising lyrics never fail to take your breathe away. No matter what style of music you like, left of the middle will satisfy your every hunger. Natalie Imbruglia is a star in her own right and the recent news of her long awaited second album (Scheduled for release mid 2001)will be quite literally music to the ears of millions. Even now Left of the middle is my favorite album, Infact i am listening to it as i type this. BUY IT NOW....INFACT BUY TWO!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Natalie is Exceptional........1999-11-20

When I first saw Natalie Imbruglia in the torn video, I knew she had incredible star potential. A songstress with as much talent and beauty makes for a potent force in album sales. The first single, torn is what hooked me. Before I even saw the video, the pop radio stations were hard at work gaining my attention with Natalie's powerful lyrics about disillusions in love. Track two, which is my favorite song on the album equates a person who I will assume to be an ex boyfriend of Natalie's to an addiction. The album continues to shine the rest of the way through with songs such as "Wishing I was There", "Leave Me Alone", and others.

Also, see the soundtrack from the movie, "GO". Natalie has an incredible song on that album.

When I first heard Torn on MTV I was blown away. Natalie's voice is spectacular. I went out and bought the album almost immediatly. Every song on the album is great. I reccomend getting this album and listening to every song careful. Natalie is a very talented person. Keep it going Nat!

I find this album to be a real discovery.Hearing "Torn" in a music store,I picked it up and went home to play it.Wow! There are surprises now and then in music that are monumental, and this is certainly one for me.I have grown to really "get into" every song on this album. Her voice, variety of music and the arrangements keep you on the edge of your musical chair the whole way through. It's fantastic!
