Another Great Rock n' Roll Classic from the '80s!.......2007-07-19
FORE! is another fantastic Huey Lewis & the News album. In this album you will get a bit more of the blues affect. Now I'm not a blues fan but when I hear this it's hard to turn it off. "Stuck with You" is one of my favorites from this album. It reminds me of when I was four and five years old again! "Jacobs Ladder" is fantastic, as well as "I know what I Like", "I Never Walk Alone", "Forest for the Trees", and "Simple as That". The rest of the album, along with the songs I've mentioned, is very catchy and fun to listen to. "Doing It All for my Baby" is another fantastic song from the album. "Hip to be Square" is fantastic as well. If you're a Huey Lewis & the News fan, or if you just like good music, then you need to pick this one up. It's a keeper!
Another Grammy-winner!.......2007-07-10
The title was ideal for Huey Lewis & The News' fourth overall album despite the golf term. This album was preceded by the band's 1980 self-titled debut,1982's PICTURE THIS and the Grammy-winning SPORTS,released in late '83 or early '84. The band garnered more Grammys with the hits JACOB'S LADDER(written or co-written by Bruce Hornsby),STUCK WITH YOU,DOING IT ALL FOR MY BABY,HIP TO BE SQUARE and I KNOW WHAT I LIKE. The success of this album lasted for a year, from its summer 1986 release thru the following summer! In the photo, one of the "Newsmen" holds a miniature golf club. Unfortunately, the 1988 follow-up SMALL WORLD didn't win any Grammys but spawned two Top 20 hits. The band was then dropped from the Chrysalis label, which was extinct since 1990 and they moved to EMI-Manhattan.
Great CD! I have owned copies of this album since its debut in 1986........2007-01-09
This is by far one of the absolute best releases by Huey Lewis & the News. Powerful, hard-hitting, and quite emotional. Now, I bought my own copy of this CD back in the spring of 1993, and I've had it ever since. The CD I purchased here was a Christmas present for a special lady friend of mine, named Emily. And a sweet girl SHE is, I can tell you. Anyway, I also got my first ever copy of this album on cassette, back during Christmas 1986. During the summer of that year, "Stuck With You" was my then top favorite. But if you read below, you will see that I have since switched to a different and much better song. I also dedicated this song to Emily recently, and I am not referring to "Stuck With You".
Anyway, my all-time favorite song on this album is not even one of the groups hits. I am referring to "Forest For the Trees". When I first got to hear this song on Christmas Day of 1986, I was hooked!! I also enjoy pretty much the rest of the entire album, aside from "Whole Lot of Lovin'". My mom's favorite on this album is "Naturally", because it also sounds like a barber shop quartet. Emily's favorite on this CD is "Doing It All For My Baby", and it is somewhat of a favorite of mine as well. Another one of my favorites on this album is "Hip to be Square", because I have always considered myself a 'square'. And this song is somewhat of a war cry for those folks out there who are just like me. It all has to do with the way I was raised, and there's nothing wrong with that!
Anyway, for those of you who like hard-hitting, powerful rock music from the '80s era -- but without all the nonsense and profanity -- then I definitely would suggest that this album is for you. Don't get me wrong, for there are other bands out there who are just as popular as Huey Lewis & the News, if not even more popular, such as Journey and Rush -- whom I also love to this day, but Huey Lewis's band is one of the groups I began listening to early on in my teenage years. Besides, they are still pretty much "The Heart of Rock & Roll".
Anyway, folks, y'all might wanna pick this one up for your collection. Enjoy. The same goes for you, Emily, babe.
Be-FORE & after.......2006-10-12
I grew up in the 80's and this was a hip band. I originally bought this on cassette and recently looked to get it on CD. Amazon had a great price and I decided to go "Back in time". The music was as I remembered, great! I like the non-hits alot on this CD. I know radio wouldnt play them so they sit unless you are a fan. "Whole lotta lovin", "Simple as that", and "I know what I like" are just a few. I really enjoy "Naturally" which is accapella. I wish HLN would put out a CD of all accapella music. I guess you could say that "FORE'S" hits were played out in the 80's. They feel fresh again, though. GO BACK!
Huey Lewis & the News at their best.......2006-07-11
There are some very quality songs on this album, from the hit Jacob's Ladder to the a capella Naturally to Hip to be Square. The gamut is covered here. It's a more mature collection than Sports and as such it wasn't the commercial success that the aforementioned album was. That shouldn't diminish its value as to the listener. Unlike many recordings of that era, this one isn't filled with trite bubble-gum ditties or overly-dramatic anthems. It strikes a good balance. It's one of my favorite albums of the period and my all-time favorite of the band's.

Welcome Back, Axe!.......2006-07-03
V is (you guessed it) the fifth album by 80's hard rockers Axe, and the band's first album since the untimely death of guitarist Michael Osbourne in 1984. Thirteen years may have passed between albums, but Axe is still rocking like it's 1984. Never really a metal band in the first place, V finds the band toning down whatever hard edges it may have had and opting for a more AOR/melodic rock approach. They didn't become Journey or REO Speedwagon during their absence, but have a sound similar to later Demon and Uriah Heep albums. Axe always had a flair for that type of music, and V is no exception. The songs are well-written, and the band sounds as good as ever. The album is a welcome return by a truly underrated rock band.
Axe Five.......2000-11-16
This was a long waited suprise .The album holds its' own in the Axe collection. It is a mature sounding band. The song writing was well thought out .The new singer fits in very well . He gets what the band is about. The music has the same edge to it,but with a nice, wouldn't say polished, but professinal & solid sound to it.Even the new recording of Battles fits in great. It also shows the music is timeless. I rated it a four because nothing is perfect. Music isn't about being perfect it's a feeling. I recomend this highly for anyone who likes rock & roll with a little bit of depth.

Surprisingly Good.......2006-08-05
I bought this CD without the benefit an initial preview due to the fact that Amazon didn't have any music samples available. One of the great things about Amazon, however, is that there are so many used CD's out there that even if you make a "mistake" purchase, the damage is only $4-5 bucks.
The reason that I decided to roll the dice on this CD was based largely on the strength of Grammatrain's "Flying" album. If you're reading this, then you are most likely aware that Pete was the lead singer for Grammatrain before going it alone as a solo artist. If you don't own "Flying," it's worth the purchase price for the leadoff track, "Jonah," alone.
Which brings me back to this CD. It is a much stronger album than either of Grammatrain's efforts. The music is simply more consistent and satisfying. None of the tracks quite reach the pinnacle of "Jonah," but there are no throwaway tracks either, and "Flying" definitely has a few mediocre songs.
What sets Pete Stewart's solo album apart and makes it such a worthy purchase are the consistent melodies, meaningful lyrics and the variety of tempos. There are pop tunes, rockers and ballads here - all delivered capably and earnestly. No need to skip any tracks on this album.
Is Pete Stewart a 5? Not quite. Is this album worth purchasing? Absolutely.
One of Christian Rock's top 10 all-time.......2005-08-30
This album is absolutely fantastic. Glorious guitar playing, great lyrics/strong vocals, a few moments of slower/prayer-like great vocals blend into easily one of the top 10 Christian rock albums. Pete is the real deal, and he loves the Lord. It shows here. A MUCH under-appreciate CD.

Album Description
Wonbere, meaning "With Joy", celebrates the rich diversity and spirit of the major ethnic groups of the traditional core djembe playing culture in and around Guinea, West Africa. In these societies there are traditional rhythms and dances for virtually every event in a person's life - from naming ceremonies to rite-of-passage ceremonies; rhythms for work, for celebration, marriage, welcome, etc. - and it is for these aspects of daily life that the djembe and its music exist and from this that the music of Fore-Fote begins. Applied to these ancient rhythms is the imaginativeness of Master Drummer M. Lamine "Dibo" Camara, whose heart-pounding new arrangements of these rhythms he learned as a child bring the traditional a brilliant and contemporary twist.
Customer Reviews:
Traditional West African drums 'uncorrupted' by electrics.......2004-09-02
Decades of playing and teaching have helped 'Dibo' and Miguel find the creme de la creme of students: the proof is in the listening, as good or better a group as we have ever heard.
An extra delight is the sense of swing found in some tunes which begs the question "is swing actually of African origin?"
Fore-Fote is only a four-member group, but you'll swear there just has to be more of them.
Heart energy pouring joyously, generously.......2003-12-15
I am, in my early sixties, learning how to drum. Have really just begun a few months ago. I took a live class with Fore-Fote before I even had struck this kind of hand drum -- and I was flummoxed, couldn't do much at all. BUT, the quality of the sound there in that room, and the very special deeply loving and happy energy that was there in abundance came into me and somehow changed me. I have been taking lessons from local people in the interim and just yesterday had the opportunity to take a second lesson with Fore-Fote. I did better at drumming, for sure -- but the more important thing was the confirmation of my first impression of this music. I bought their CD (Wonbere) and listened to it today at home, and that love and special energy came through. This is soul-stirring stuff, that somehow reminds me of my potential for being happy in an all-connected kind of way that I vaugely remember from somewhere, sometime -- maybe from my childhood, or, maybe from a genetic memory. It really has a special shine, and I feel blessed to have it now to listen to and to drum with.
Share the Joy.......2000-10-19
When the musicians of Fore-Fote and guest artists from Guinea, West Africa got together to create this CD, the booklet tells us, the experience was so uplifting and exhilarating they decided to name it "Wonbere" which means "with joy" in the Susu language. That joy is passed on to the listener in this energizing CD. As an ethnomusicologist and a student of traditional djembe music who has traveled to Guinea to study, I highly recommend "Wonbere" as a 'must-have' for every djembe enthusiast's collection. Not only is the drum work truly representative of the living culture in Guinea today, but the high production quality sets this CD apart from many others that are currently available. Check out M. Lamine "Dibo" Camara's virtuosic drumming on tracks such as "Yole," "Ligueba," and "Soko." For kora (african harp) aficionados, Prince Diabate is awesome on "Sabar," "Sunu," and "Yankadi." Additionally, the booklet, written by Fore-Fote member and Dibo's adopted son Ryan M. Camara, gives valuable information about the instruments used and the history and meaning of the traditional rhythms comprising this inspiring collection.

FORE! deserves a place among the Masters!.......2002-02-16
FORE! was one of the first rock tapes I ever owned, and I played it so much that after 7 years it was worn out, and even today on CD, it ranks among my favorites. It's very rare that I can let an album play start to finish without finding a song I'm not crazy about, but FORE! is an honest-to-goodness pop-in, crank-up, and sing-along collection of songs.
"Jacob's Ladder" is a deserving kick-off song with its even blend of drums, keys, and guitar, followed by the mellow, engaging love song "Stuck With You". "Whole Lotta Lovin'" speeds up the pace by Huey's funny lyrics punctuated in the middle by his reminder "I'm the one with the harmonica!" One of Huey's most unforgettable ballads is presented in signature style with "Doin'It All For My Baby", though it's made even more appealing by its hysterical video. The same must be said of "Hip To Be Square", another simple rock tune (a la "Workin' For A Livin') driven by lyrics, particularly the catchy title.
The second side, while lesser known, has more than its share of musical gems. "I Know What I Like" is another up-tempo number that isn't easy not to sing with, while "I Never Walk Alone", is driven by danceable guitar and piano work. "Forest For The Trees" is almost an undiscovered single (along the lines of "If This Is It") the lyrics and music equally memorable. "Naturally" is a fun, doo-wopping acapella number, and the album closes out on the heavy horn-sectioned "Simple As That", which the listener won't want to end.
All in all, There isn't a bad song to be found on FORE!, which is hard to say about any album released back then, and next to impossible with the albums coming out today. This is truly Huey & the News's best album, and any fan who doesn't have it in their collection is missing out. Seriously, all those who love straight-ahead, just-for-fun Rock N'Roll, this one is FORE you!
Absolutely fantastic and probably the best Huey Lewis album.......1998-07-31
Though a lot of people in the United States might think that Huey Lewis and his band - The News - (named so because he likes to read newspapers!!!) are dated, I still have to come across a band that's got no attitudes, no airs, and plays good old American rock - without any of that new age or heavymetal tint that characterizes most other contemporary bands I've heard to recently. These are the good guys, they play good music and it's absolutely pleasing and soothing to the senses.... what more can i say... This is the best HLN album.. Get it if you don't already have it...
Is it me, or did this critic say nothing?.......1998-07-30
This is such a fantastic album. It was by far the most played album in my stereo in 1986 & 87. How could you go wrong with the two #1 hits "Stuck with You" & "Jacob's Ladder"? "Hip to be Square" is such a great song, and who could forget the "haunting" video for "Doing It All For My Baby"? These four songs all cracked the Billboard Top 5, and "I Know What I Like" was just under the Top 10. Just to let you know some little known tidbits about "Fore!": "Jacob's Ladder" was written by Bruce Hornsby and was redone by Bruce on his "Scenes from the Southside" album, "Naturally" is a real sweet acapella number, the horns section from Tower of Power show their stuff on "Simple as That" & "Doing It...", and a bunch of 49ers, including Joe Montana, provide some backup vocals for 2 songs. A well deserved 5 stars.
A great 1986 flash back........1998-07-29
I got this album back in 1986 when it first came out. In the age of CD I quickly picked this one up. I think it is so underated in Huey Lewis's collection. This music is simply and honest. The thing that makes this cd work is that Huey doesn't over do it!!

This dashing and intelligent tribute to Walt Whitman's poetry as art song puts commitment to artistry at center stage. With uncommon sensitivity and magnificent voice, Thomas Hampson lovingly interprets 22 songs by various composers, successfully capturing the emotional range of the American bard's verse by delicately caressing the poetry and, alternately, igniting its every nuance. These song settings enhance the innate music in Whitman's poems, giving them passionate expression in another dimension. Craig Rutenberg's stellar accompaniment is a lesson in effective collaboration. Hampson's interspersing of four poetry readings is below this recording's interpretive caliber, but it's a nice touch. Non-Whitman-heads may find the entire recording a bore, though. - -Barbara Eisner Bayer
Customer Reviews:
A labor of love, but the songs aren't first rate.......2006-12-31
As a concept album, Hampson's 1997 tribute to Walt Whitman earned critical praise for its sensitivity and musicality. There's no doubt that the singer is in rare form here--it would be hard to imagine any of this repertoire better sung. He isn't a good reciter of poetry in the four spoken tracks. The major drawback, however, is that none of these songs are close to being masterpieces, and quite a few are decidedly minor. The avid listener can cncentrate on the poetry instead of the music, I suppose--Hampson's enunciation is crystal clear--but after six or seven items couched in the same rather timid Anglo-American art song form, this lavor of love becomes rather taxing as a listening experience. Taken a few at a time, however, these are intriguing choices that combine into a unqiue recital.
Couldn't find another place to ask, thus this line........1999-02-03
Am looking for the bugle calls commonly used when raising the flag and lowering it. Specifically, I am looking for "To the Colors" and "Retreat" in bugle calls. Do you have it?

This is a based on the works of one of history's greatest composers. Grainger is my personal favorite, as he writes many melodies for saxophone. "Molly on the Shore" is probably my favorite track on the album. If ou find that you enjoy this, search out a recording of Grainger's "Lincolnshire Posy", it is quite possibly the greatest piece ever written.

This is one of those discs that sneak up on you and grow in delight with each playing. The ensemble playing is crisp and spirited and the melodic intervention rich. The adaptation of the Franck Chorale for band is priceless. I look forward to exploring Mr. Grainger's opus as a result of this disc.
