Excellent Collection, Even Better Price.......2005-10-14

I picked this CD up as an afterthought while searching for some background music for a play I was putting together, and while it cost less than half of the other swashbuckler soundtrack CDs, it has more tracks than most, more variety than any(dramatic to romantic to action), and solid sound quality. If you're after a whole collection of the Korngold era tunes in one CD, this is it.

An Oldie Re-Issue, But Still A Goodie!.......2005-04-03

A re-issue of tracks from Marco Polo 8.223607, 1995. Practically perfect in every way. But the brass could be a bit more crisp and defined. Primarily an early work from master restoration magicians Messrs. John Morgan and William Stromberg. And now at "popular prices." Don't delay on this one!

These performances appeared in 1995 on Naxos's full-price sister label, Marco Polo, and are among a spate of movie music scores making their appearances now at budget price. Some are wonderful - like Honegger's score for 'Les Misérables,' Georges Auric's 'Beauty and the Beast,' and Wojciech Kilar's 'Dracula.' Some don't stand up too well on their own, like Steiner's 'King Kong' or Waxman's 'Objective: Burma!'. But this one definitely has the best of the best, all in that late-romantic, richly scored music we associate with the genre. The producers have put together some of the best cues from four swashbucklers and from beginning to end this is music to enjoy, with no dead wood anywhere along the way.

The Main Title of Miklós Rosza's 'The King's Thief' is a heckuva lot better than the 1955 Edmund Purdom movie for which it was written. Victor Young's 'Scaramouche' is represented by nine cues, among them the delightful 'Main Title' and the faux-baroque 'Pavane.' The inventor of this sort of movie music, Erich Maria Korngold, is here represented by six cues from the 1935 Errol Flynn blockbuster, 'Captain Blood.' All five cues are terrific and sweep you along, but I particularly like 'Slaves--Arabella and Blood,' a seven-minute tone poem of great beauty and ingenuity. Max Steiner, a transplanted Viennese like Korngold, contributes six cues from 'The Three Musketeers,' also from 1935. The love theme is really gorgeous.

These scores were reconstructed by the late Christopher Palmer ('The King's Thief'), William Stromberg ('Scaramouche') and John Morgan ('Captain Blood' and 'The Three Musketeers') from conductor's piano scores; the full scores, like many of their era, were lost. In one case the score had only a violin line. The three arrangers attempted, then, to reproduce the orchestrations from the movie sound track itself, a difficult task at best, but it sounds to me like they did a marvelous job collectively. These orchestrations have the sweep and grandeur of the originals.

The Brandenburg Philharmonic Orchestra (Potsdam, Germany) is conducted by Richard Kaufman. They are beautifully played and recorded.

This one is worth having if you love the flamboyant style favored in adventure films; this is the crème de la crème.

Hugh Le Caine, early electronic music pioneer, demonstrates his Electronic Sackbut in 1948 by playing the opening clarinet solo from Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue'. Working at his Toronto laboratory, supported by the Canadian National Research Council, he went on to engineer and prototype the touch sensitive organ, variable speed recorder, multi-track recorder, and numerous other magnificent electronic instruments. And he demonstrated his inventions by composing his own music and by arranging well known tunes, demonstrating at the same time that he was a talented musician and that he had a great sense of humor. This CD, produced by Gayle Young, Le Caine's biographer, is a comprehensive compilation of his music, much of it not available before. The CD also includes many of Le Caine's spoken explanations of his demonstrations which make the CD come alive with human interest. In its commemoration of a remarkable personality and in the historical importance of its content, this is an essential CD. In the extent to which it is also enjoyable, it is a stunning accomplishment.

For any student of electronic music, this cd is a must. The cd works on so many levels: as an historical archive, a textbook of tape and control voltage manipulation, and as an interesting listening experience. You really feel as if you are connecting with the man himself. interesting note: he died shortly before John Chowning introduced FM synthesis to the world. Coincidence?

Album Description

THE DEMONSTRATION hail from the now legendary North Carolina hardcore/metal scene, which has spawned numerous greats acts such as BETWEEN THE BURIED & ME, GLASS CASKET, BELOVED, PRAYER FOR CLEANSING, HE IS LEGEND and CATHARSIS so you can imagine the difficult task ahead of them as they try to become the next named added to that prestigious list. Despite their youthfulness they have already been paying their dues playing countless shows across the south east and following an impressive demo release in 2005 they enlisted producer, Jamie King (BTBAM, BELOVED, KILLWHITNEYDEAD, GLASS CASKET, etc) to record their debut for Tribunal Records. After several months of rag-tag sessions the band emerged with Existence, which for the band's debut is a stunning collection of progressive metal infused hardcore. THE DEMONSTRATION is technically proficient and melodically fueled but able to deliver a crushing breakdown now and again (more often then not!). Unlike many of today's! young bands THE DEMONSTRATION haven't lost or abandoned the art of songwriting and ability to deliver a striking metal "riff" for the sake of faux complexity or bland commercial appeal. Building upon the established strength of their songs THE DEMONSTRATION also enlisted a few guest vocalists to help enhance the already engaging material. Shawn Pelata (of LINE OF FIRE) was brought in to deliver the melodically charged chorus found in "Anecdote." While M KWD (of KILLWHITNEYDEAD) and Josh Albright (of QUELL/ MALEBOLGIA) were there to add some variation and depth to the death metal assault already found through out Existence's nine tracks. THE DEMONSTRATION is here to prove that North Carolina's hardcore/metal scene is still vibrant, creative and ready to conquer all. Awesome 3rd EP.......2005-12-10

This is actually mellowdrone's 3rd ep and it was recorded in a bedroom by one man. mellowdrone is a full band now and they have a full length album titled "Box" coming out January 24th, 2006. If you can find this EP or "Go Get 'Em Tiger", then you should get them. If you search well, you can find them for $5 or so. Comparisons made by other reviewers are way off.

Cool.......2005-07-07

This is probably the first time I've come across a band whose name better represents the music rather than the album title, but there it is. There is a very mellow, laid back feel to this album. The music is mostly good, with the exception being 'No More Options' which uses crappy chuggah-chuggah guitars rhythms. The main problem I find with the album would be the lyrics, most notably with passages like "Excuse me is my rant taking too long/is it getting in the way of this lovely song". Yes the words do need some fixing up.

The best moment on the album comes on 'Beautiful Day', which is great not just because of the music, but because of the irony of the most optimistic song on the album being sung and played in such a disinterested, laid back tone.

The highlights of this album are 'Tinylittle', 'Fashionably Uninvited', 'Beautiful Day', and 'Bitelip', though 'Bitelip' is kinda ruined by the lyrics in the last half. The other two songs on the album just aren't very good.

mellowdrone is coming out with a full length album later this year (October 4th so says the website), but if you can't wait, then this isn't a bad EP to get.

An excellent EP: beautiful, cohesive, and with an endless replay value. Johnathan Bates accurately self-describes his music as feminine, with sexual undertones. Brooding and subtle, but not requiring any effort to enjoy. It elegantly manages to be depressed, intellectual music without ever sliding into the disgusting realm of whiny self-pity. It can be pretentious at times, but never unbearably or unjustifiably so.

Take note, Phantom Planet lovers: This is one of Phantom Planet's all-time favorite bands.

This cd is a very good cd. All of the songs sound different. Its not like those horrible bands were all songs sound the same like Korn. Mellowdrone can play there instruments. You should get other songs and hear for yourself how good mellowdrone really is. 5 songs just isnt engough. It doesnt do justice to the band. They went to berkley so you know they are talented. They are alot better than the crap thats out there today. They are def not emo. They have a very unique sound almost like radiohead and muse. This band is awesome. zzzzzz...comparisons of mellowdrone to jeff buckley, smashing pumpkins, and jeremy enigk miss one key aspect of all those bands' music: actual emotion, passion, inspiration...call it what you will. this music is a sanitized streamlining of those artists, with recycled coldplay lyrics. why waste your time.

This is a good collection of sound effects. Some of the items sound a little dated but most things can be combine together with a little imagination.

My friend got this CD (note it's a CD) so if you want to accurately set up a Dolby Digital/DTS system this is not the way to go. If your a beginner or don't really care how your set up sounds then go for it. Everyone else should get Avia Guide To Hometheater or better yet Digital Video Essentials, both sold right here on amazon.com.

Nightmare !!!.......2003-08-03

Careful!!! IF you are looking for a pure music and video clips to check your latest dolby HT - this will be a nightmare for you. This CD is simply gives wizzzing sound through which you can check all the channels. It wont be helpful if you are using dolby digital. It is good only for old dolby pro logic systems. If you are having DTS decoded etc... this CD will be an expensive toy.

Give another thought beofore you buy... Best suggestion would be DTS / Dolby Digital Demo CDs

From "Spoken Channel Identification" through "1 kHz, 0 dB", it doesn't get much better than this! One of the best CDs in my collection. My favorite track is #15 (Cows Moooing) which should have been released as a single (what was WEA thinking?) and possibly given a Puff Daddy or Junior Vasquez remix. If this CD is any indication then "Dolby Surround Test" is going to rule the airwaves with their next release. I can't wait.

My only complaint is that the otherwise informative book doesn't have any pictures of the band. What gives? They can't be THAT ugly!

By the way, does anyone know when they'll be touring?

Dolby Surround Test CD.......2000-01-09

Not in comparative terms, the 5-star rating assigned to this one is subjective, only reflecting my satifaction with it. Perhaps I should give it a 4-star because it certainly could be better.

This CD is very well made, and all in English (i.e. the 30-page instruction/explanation booklet and the "Left Channel, Right Channel, ..." spoken in the first track. It obviously has more than what's needed to set up and test a DPL system. The tracks are good for testing and adjusting any speaker systems and revealing the problems with the speakers and the room accoustic conditions (e.g. speaker frequecy response, speaker and/or room resonance, speaker build quality, etc.) It can be a powerful tool for speaker auditioning and speaker specs debunking.

The Noise Panning tracks easily reveal how well or poor the speakers are sonically matched and/or placed. The Base-frequency Adjustments tracks reveals the problems with subwoofers (placement and build quality), some of which may be remedied easily. The frequency sequence and sweep clearly show the dips in the frequency response of the woofer and subwoofer.

The musical samples themselves are worth part of the cost. They show you how good even DPL can sound, hence what one should expect of DD or DTS CDs and music DVDs.

The booklet contains illustrations of speakers vs. effects, and photos of the performing artists and where the sound was recorded (churches, etc.).
